Cohan officially puts GSW up for sale
Might as well move this to the front page, as its more important than anything else going on in Warrior land.
Information from a recent article on www.sportsbusinessjournal.com, states that Chris Cohan has officially put the golden state warriors up for sale.
The article, which you can find here (http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/article/65126) says that Cohan "retained Galatioto Sports Partners to help sell the franchise." "Cohan bought the Warriors in 1995 for $119 million..." while just recently, the Bobcats just sold for $275 million." "“It has the potential to go over $400 million if there is a bidding war,” Ganis said"
Its happening. Its really happening. "Warriors- Its a great Timeout!"
(Pray for Ellison)

Cohan officially puts GSW up for sale
Let’s hope that this is true. “A Change Is Coming”. Now let’s just hope Ellison makes the necessary moves & quickly.
+1
I think someone on this said that even if Ellison (or anyone else) buys the dubz it will take them 2 or 3 years before they officially take over?
Either way works for me as long as the team sells soon or even NOW. i just dont want a continued crappy running ownership by the same FO. its been too damn long.
If ellison does buy now, i hope he can convince the current FO knuckleheads to resign Raja Bell because i still feel like he is the stepping stone to rebuild this young team.
2 year contract? 3 contract? just do it.
bring back Raja Bell!

Stern would love having a guy as rich as him as full time owner as soon as possible and so would the rest of NBA.

yeah
It’s weird how one of the most richest men in the world would want to buy such a crappy franchise like the Warriors. I heard somewhere that Ellison would be the richest owner in sports if he bought a team.
The good thing about this team, though, is that there’s a ton of potential. Not only with the players, but we’re also the 5th largest market in the NBA; so it’s kind of like, “we suck, but we’re supposed to be good since we’re such a big market”.
Maybe Stern can see this potential and lend us a hand by rigging the lottery and giving us the first pick. haha. That would set us up for dominance for at least the next decade. We have an underachieving team but we have the craziest fans, so imagine how much more crazy we’d be if we had a championship team to root for.

The Warriors aren't a crappy franchise
There’s more business potential there than just about any other NBA franchise not in L.A. Especially if the new owner can get a new arena built in either Oakland or San Francisco (I read somewhere that Ellison would prefer trying to build an arena in the City by SBC). Rabid fan base, the franchise has been making money even without a good product. And they are probably going to be sold low. From a business perspective, everything makes sense. The ONLY thing to do from a business perspective will be to improve the main product, the team. Which will take a while but is definitely doable.
resign Raja Bell because i still feel like he is the stepping stone to rebuild this young team.
This doesn’t make sense. He’s old, an average NBA player at best, and didn’t really seem to want to be here when he showed up. Unless there’s some real documented evidence that suggests otherwise, I strongly suspect money was the driving force behind his recent “I want to stay with the Dubs” comments.

Money is always a driving force right?
But I also think Raja foresees a great future for the Warriors and feels like he can be a great contributor or big impact to this team.
All I needed to see was Raja Bell being an inspiration to Anthony Randolph on Nov. 17th against the Cav’s. (i think that was the game)
The dubz are filled with a bunch of potential superstar talents and I think Raja could be an inspiration to this team next season. We lost Baron Davis’s veteran leadership and swagger. And then we lost having Stack Jack as a veteran on this team.
Sure, maybe Raja Bell is an average NBA player at this moment, but he still understands the game well, would bring that defensive swagger to this potential team, and re-enforce a committment to defense. He knows the Warriors can be a very explosive offensive team and can outrun any team out the gym, so I’m sure he can get this team with a defensive mind set because it seems like the young cats respect him.
I wouldn’t expect Raja Bell to be our savior or superstar stud. I know what he is capable of and what he can do for this team. We need a veteran that the young cats can look up to, listen to, and respect.
I really feel this characteristic to any team is an important element to having good chemistry and what makes a good team… a good team.
Just my take on it, but go warriors still even if im dead wrong.

Until we change the ownership and coaching philosophy, having some mediocre old NBAer with “defensive swagger” is just putting lipstick on the pig while rearranging the deck chair on the titanic.
I know what he is capable of and what he can do for this team. We need a veteran that the young cats can look up to, listen to, and respect.
Please explain how you “know” Raja Bell can command respect from these guys. What’s he done before to suggest that he can be a leader?

Good points.
I brought up "defensive swagger" because we didnt have the best defense with the We Believe team, but I liked how we had Stack Jack, Matt Barnes, Pietrus etc. to play scrappy on defense. How we had Baron as a big point guard to defend the 1 and 2’s.
We don’t have this right now, and I think having Raja could inspire them to play defense. What veteran do you suggest would bring this type of defensive leadership?
Sorry to sound like a pompous “act like i know everything” jack arse, but NO…i don’t know if Raja can command that kind of respect from these guys. Just like YOU don’t know if RAJA CAN’T. How about sign him for a one year contract and let it ride for a whole year on what Raja could accomplish or not with this team.
I’m willing to be moded about what I project with this team. It’s happened to me 37 gazillion times and I’m never chicken crap to be proven wrong.
The correct term I should have used is: i “believe” Raja Bell can command respect from these guys.
I chose not to use that word because i didnt feel like it.

Just like YOU don’t know if RAJA CAN’T.
I never said if I knew or didn’t. You did. I, for one, do not believe that Raja Bell can command enough respect from the youngsters to make this team even a passable defensive team. Especially without any support from the coaching staff (which he won’t get as long as Nellie is here). There are just too many individual limitations, not to mention a ton of turnover that kills any “team defense” chemistry that could have been built upon.
Hope all you want. Raja Bell is not the answer. He’d help if there was an answer and a driving force in the right direction (e.g. coaching emphasis on defense). He’s not going to solve any problems, and he’s not a part of the long term plan.
Trust me, learning english isn’t a waste of time. It is actually sort of useful.

The article from sbj

Published March 22, 2010 : Page 01
Golden State Warriors owner Chris Cohan has retained Galatioto Sports Partners to sell the franchise.
With Jordan approved as Bobcats owner, Nets come next
While the offering memorandum won’t be completed for a few weeks, experts said the Warriors, playing in one of the NBA’s largest and most demographically attractive markets, may attract enough bidders to drive up the price despite the lingering recession and the team’s poor on-court performance.
Recent NBA team sales cannot be considered robust deals. The Charlotte Bobcats just sold for roughly $275 million, less than the $300 million Bob Johnson paid for the expansion team in 2003. But the Warriors’ price could surpass the NBA-record $401 million sale of the Phoenix Suns to Robert Sarver in 2004, said Marc Ganis, president of SportsCorp Ltd.
The club has
struggled on the
court, making the
playoffs once
under Cohan’s
ownership.
"It has the potential to go over $400 million if there is a bidding war," Ganis said. "There are enough people in the local market who can put down serious equity. This is not the Bobcats."
The strength of the region’s economy also makes the team desirable to potential investors.
"The market has the Silicon Valley belt of wealth, and there will also be some people from the Los Angeles area that want to own a basketball team," said Rob Tilliss, a former sports banker who now runs advisory firm Inner Circle Sports. "It also has a very strong middle market corporate base, which is the lifeblood of some of these teams."
Cohan does not own the 19,596-seat Oracle Arena. He leases the facility, which was renovated in 1997, from Oakland-Alameda County. The lease was signed in 1997-98 in exchange for arena upgrades, and the Warriors are committed to playing in the arena through the 2016-17 season. Terms of the lease call for the Warriors to pay a base rent of $1.5 million and about $700,000 a year from the team’s $30 million, 10-year naming rights deal with Oracle Corp. that expires in 2016. In addition, the Warriors pay a share of parking, premium seat and concessions revenue to the county, up to a maximum of $7.4 million a year. SMG manages the facility.
The Warriors would not comment for this story.
Sal Galatioto, president of Galatioto Sports Partners, confirmed that the company has been retained by the team, but would not comment further. Galatioto Sports most recently represented Johnson in his deal to sell the Bobcats to Michael Jordan. The company also represented the Ricketts family in its recent purchase of the Chicago Cubs for $845 million and is representing Tom Hicks in his sale of the NHL’s Dallas Stars.
Cohan bought the Warriors in 1995 for $119 million. In 2004, he sold a 20 percent stake in the franchise to a group of four investors for an undisclosed sum.
Cohan bought the Warriors in 1995 for
$119M, and sold a 20% stake in 2004.
The franchise has just one playoff appearance under Cohan’s ownership and this year has one of the NBA’s worst records at 19-48 through March 17. Two seasons ago, the Warriors led the NBA in new full-season-ticket sales and ranked among the league’s top 10 in season-ticket holders, with sales exceeding 10,000 full-season-ticket plans.
But this year’s on-court struggles have begun to show up at the gate, with the team’s average attendance down 5 percent to 17,930 fans a game through March 16, the 13th-best gate in the 30-team NBA. The drop in ticket sales is reflected in the team’s decision to slash prices for current season-ticket holders next season, with some lower bowl prices dropping by 24 percent.
Speculation that the team will be sold has been swirling, with published reports of interest from Oracle Corp. CEO Larry Ellison, who in a late January public appearance reportedly said that he wanted to buy the team but couldn’t because it wasn’t available.
Now that Cohan has made the decision to sell, Ellison will have his chance, along with other suitors.
"There is upside into bringing new life into the franchise," Tilliss said. "It will get a fair amount of interest, but people are taking less risk these days, so the price will depend on the number of bidders."

From TrueHoop
Will he actually get them? Until someone who can outbid Ellison surfaces — and there are no such known entities — he’s the heavy favorite.
But Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News reported via his Twitter feed Monday afternoon that Ellison is one of just five or six groups interested in buying the club and that those groups had been told to withhold their bids until the "gun goes off."
One can presume, then, that opening up the bidding so publicly is at least partially aimed at getting Ellison to kick in more money than he’s been willing to discuss so far.
As one top Western Conference executive told ESPN.com on Monday: "This means that the Warriors are serious about selling. But it also means they want top dollar."
http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/14451/warriors-for-sale-what-we-know
Randy Hahn: "I’ve been referred to as a playa…"
It means that they're going to be sold
And that’s really all I care about. What I don’t want is Cohan to feel like he’s being lowballed and decide not to sell the team. I don’t care if Ellison or somebody else has to pay $400M because that’s what it’s apparently worth on the open market. I just want Cohan out.

Am I the Only Person that dont want them to move?
Why move them to San Fran? The Coliseum Complex is very convienent. People can get there from Anywhere in the Bay via the Bart.
whoo - hoo!
But I’d also rather they stay in Oakland.
Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
The only way I see them moving is if
the Shark Tank/HP Pavilion is a suitable venue come 2016/2017. Given the difficulties for the Raiders, 49ers and A’s all finding new digs in the area, I don’t see the Warriors being able to build/move anywhere unless the arena is to be totally privately financed (even then, I don’t know the ins and outs of commercial property/ zoning, etc), add to that the fact that Oracle is a perfectly good venue, and yes it’s connected by Bart.
Personally, I live in SF, muni is far more convenient for me than Bart, so I wouldn’t mind them building south of market/ near the ballpark/ cal-train station… but that’s me being selfish.
In the end, it’s a good day. a GREAT day. On a separate note, I’m curious to see what Bob ‘Homer- toes the company line’ Fitzgerald and Jim Barnett have to say about it (or if they say anything).
Chris Cohan- YOU'RE FIRED!
I'll believe it when it happens
the only thing the Warrior front office is marketing. I truely believe this is BS and another ploy to get STH’s to re-up. Good luck (not really). I’ll have my Warrior rep call me when it really happens and Nelson is fired. Let Cohan eat an extra $6M off the purchase price to get him back to Maui.

New ownership FTW
This is awesome news, but my guess is that we’re looking at several more months before anything substantial happens. Galatioto still needs produce the offering memorandum that will be sent out to interested investors (this can take a long time depending on the quality of the team assigned to the sale and how organized Cohan is with his financial information, projections, etc). Once that is out, I’m guessing there will be 90 days or so for parties to submit an indication of interest, and another 30-60 days for due diligence and for the auction process to play itself out. We’re looking at 6-9 months minimum, not including the approval process with the Association. I hope it is quicker…
Hopefully there won’t be too many bidders—that will definitely contribute to a drawn out process. If I were a potential buyer, I’d have serious reservations going into an auction process with Larry Ellison. The guy is loaded, doesn’t like to lose, and will surely make it very expensive for me to win the auction.
Overall, this is an interesting move by Cohan. Hiring a banker and starting an auction process (that will take a very long time) is not consistent with someone who is near financial ruin and needs money quickly—its much more consistent with someone who wants to maximize the proceeds from a sale and doesn’t care about how long it will take. So either Cohan is doing just fine, or he is making a very ballsy bluff.
Yup, people think once you buy the team, it'll be an instant transfer.
After all the paperwork and negotiations I expect to see the time waited for a complete transfer to be several months. Then there will be the roster and personnel moves which will also take some time.

I once said that we should trade Ellis and try to restart from there. Now I would like to apologize for ever thinking that and I understand that the real restart comes this August/September when Cohan is gone for good. Curry and Ellis can coexist especially when we have an owner who is a world renowned winner. His Yacht team won it all and he knows what it takes to make things happen to turn teams into to winners.
Curry (And Wall too)
Ellis (Morrow)
Maggette (or someone else through trade or draft eg Turner)
Randolph (Wright)
Biedrins (Derrick Favors or Cousins)
Any of those (positions) would help our team out so much. I would love to see them all lead back to winning by Ellison with new uniforms, new mascot, new everything.
Thank you Cohan for finally leaving this place. Don’t worry about ever coming back we will be fine thanks.

How many members do we have on this site?
If the club sells for $300M, and we can get 800 interested people, that is only $375,000 each. Sounds like a bargain to me!
