Golden State Warriors to sport Alternate Golden State D-League Jerseys in 2010-2011

UPDATE 4/2 8:15am: Happy April Fool's!

--------------------------------------------------------

As we all know change is in store for the Golden State Warriors... and I'm not talking about dollars and cents.

After 16 years of complete ineptitude (see 16 Years of Chris Cohan Owning the Golden State Warriors: 10 of the Dumbest Moves) Chris Cohan has (finally) put the beloved Bay Area hoops squad on the market with the most likely suitor being a very, very, very rich man who has a basketball court on his yatch (see Polling GSoM: Who do you want to be the next owner of the Golden State Warriors?- Larry Ellison, Mark Mastrov, Group from China, Ice Cube).

Also after 8 years of sporting the thunderbolt version 2.0 uniforms :: home + away (much, much better than the hideous 1.0 :: home + away I'll add), the team will be unveiling new jerseys soon. Longtime GSoM community member BritWarriorsGSW heard about the forthcoming uniform change way back in September in a small season ticket holder meeting and spread the good word in The San Quentin Jailbreak with Robert and Larry!, which went on to be one of the most popular and cited FanPosts of all-time in this community.

Simply put a new era of Golden State Warriors basketball is upon us.

But back to the jerseys. The final home and away jersey colors and design schemes won't be finalized and ready  to go (though you can get a good idea of how they'll look by the blue and yellow side stripes and season ticket renewal lettering on Warriors.com)  till the Warriors draft party in late June (if you're a season ticket holder you should have received the invite as part of your renewal mailing; here's the flyer in case you missed it), but the design for the Warriors 2010-2011 alternative jerseys has already been set in place. Tony.psd and I got a sneak peak at the alternative jersey design at a small season ticket holder event yesterday late afternoon at the team's headquarters on 1011 Broadway in Oakland.

I know you're all dying to know what the new alternate jerseys look like. Unfortunately we weren't allowed to take pictures at the event, but with our collective photographic memory and Tony's Adobe Photoshop/ Illustrator mastery we were able to recreate the design for you.

JUMP for an exclusive first look at the 2010-2011 Golden State Warriors Alternate Jerseys!

I personally think they're pretty fly. They have that neo-retro feel similar to the last Seattle SuperSonics jerseys :: home + away (S.O.S. RIP). I'm curious what you all think of course, so post your thoughts in the comments and make sure to vote in the hot-ness poll. My fashion sense is honestly stuck in 1995- not that that's not a good thing.

It was fun to get a sneak peak of the jerseys before they're released to the public, but it was also cool that the Warriors set up a meet and greet with Nellie and management. Here's a couple snippets that I can recall off the top of my head. I'll update this post with anything else I can remember, but I just wanted to get this out there while it's fresh in my head:

Golden State Warriors head coach Don Nelson:

I came up with a new name for the team back in January, The Golden State D-Leaguers, and we decided to run with it.

Golden State Warriors owner Chris Cohan:

As you might have heard the Warriors are for sale and for the first time in 16 years I most likely won't be the owner of this team at the start of the 2010-2011 season. I know we've had our struggles over the years, but I just wanted to leave everyone with something to remember me by.

Golden State Warriors President Robert Rowell:

We've had our fair share of criticism for our commitment to cutting costs and "salary protection", but I think it's important that we also express and celebrate our commitment to the NBA D-League.

Now love them or hate them (okay, no one loves them), I have to give Cohan and Rowell credit for at least stopping by. We've called them clowns in the past, but I'll give credit where credit is due.

One of our best blog buddies was also there for the private release party...

Ru_tiny_medium Ridiculous Upside's NBA D-League resident expert Scott Schroeder:

This is just ridiculous.

Keep it locked on GSoM for pictures of the Golden State Warriors brand new home and away jerseys when they're finalized!

I actually like this

Something very contemporary yet retro. A bit more tweaking and you’re onto something! The bridge is the best one yet.

Actually, the one in the gag image above is pretty cool too.

I’m not a fan of the Simple Jack Neo Bay Bridge one that people have been posting.

Awesome! REC.

These would look especially handsome with super short John Stockton-style shorts. Actually check that … instead of shorts, Speedos™. Speedos with flames and a thunderbolt logo. And instead of sneakers, orange Tevas™.

I’d photoshop it, but all the images that turn up under “speedo” are vaguely NSFW…

There will be no extra point!

Where is Taco Bell? I used to love those nights when Warriors would score 100 and they would announce free chalupas for everyone. Good ol’ days, lol.

I realize the name change is a joke

But the wording off to the left is a nice touch, and the bridge looks sick!

Get rid of that silly collar and make the side stripes go straight down and we have a winner!

my 2¢

I thought maybe I should elaborate on my comment (and funny thing) I noticed a reply to my comment asking for such specifics. Well here’s my thought.

I like how in the olden days a basketball was incorporated into the logos of each team (maybe there were a couple that didn’t). Not saying I’m a big fan of the GSW California map and ball, but you get the picture. I don’t see how a bridge speaks “Warriors.” Change the team name to the Golden State Bridges and it makes more sense. I personally would like to see something less docile and children friendly as the current logos have been. The team needs a new attitude and new persona. To maybe use a Star Wars analogy, less Jar Jar Binks (Thunder character) and more Jedi Master (some type of Warrior image or character) would be a direction I would try. Like I said, the bridge art looks like clip art and very generic (kinda like hangman or stick figurish) and no personality. You might say the same with the cable car design (which I personally like) but that screams old school and vintage character to me. Also the font choice looks too slight for me. Something that exemplifies “WARRIORS” and not “warriors.” The number in the back looks cool, but along with the color scheme it sorta reminds me of the Warriors East (Wizards).

BTW, no offense if you actually designed the logo and not just recreating what you saw at the unveiling. it’s just IMHO is all.

Geezy, are you talking about Tony’s “D-League Warriors” spoof, or Brit’s prototype design? I’m guessing the latter, as Tony’s numbers aren’t anything like the Wizards’. Tony, I’m loving your bridge icon.

by ivanbe on Apr 1, 2010 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I’m referring to the prototype design. I kinda figured out the DLW’s was a joke cuz I’ve actually referred to them as that myself. Haha. As for the helmet design, I think it’s hard to make out. First I didn’t notice it…and when I did, I couldn’t make out it was a helmet. When I read the description did I only realize it was a helmet. I think the logo should have an element that relates to the location and history. That’s why the cable car I feel works, or even the tomahawk in both hardwood classics designs. The old school had it right in utilizing local or native elements. For me it makes more sense then a Helmet that looks like something from Greece or Rome (with sunglasses at that). Perhaps inspired by SJ state, but they’re Spartans that’s why their logo is that of a Greek soldier. When I think Warrior, and being in California, my thought is some Native American symbolism. I’m pretty ignorant what the types of Native Americans populated the area so maybe they weren’t warrior-like such as Iroquois or Aztecs. But maybe a more generic type of weapon or action that shows what a Warrior is about. I get it with the bridge cuz it’s a Bay symbol. But if the W’s are really changing owners, they need to change their losing culture as well, and I think a more aggressive design that exhibits strength, determination, and confidence should be considered.

by geezy on Apr 1, 2010 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions

That was my original thinking for a Warrior Helmet based design...

But agree that ‘Warriors’ the word probably needs to be more prominant..

by BritWarriorGSW on Apr 1, 2010 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I was given this assignment 2 weeks ago...

For months if not years I took little notes on a scratch paper and wrote down little things people loved… and hated. Everyone hated todays current logo… but a majority of folks kept asking for “bring the bridge back” in a current way, etc. It seems anything that was a Hardwood classic was more popular than a current Logo…

So I revamped the idea with a close up bridge shot. Brought back an oldie and set it to my specs and thoughts. It’s just an idea, I could care less what the front office designs. I thought outside the box, refusing to photoshop something people have already seen.

As I see the polls split between more folks not feeling the design its all good! Thats a plus for feedback… unfortunately I don’t know what folks want with it being split. These are just ideas I put together for the joke.

Its challenging to design something that’s split in the publics eyes. But saying its dope or sucks… takes a few seconds for the reader and takes me however long it takes to get it right. Put yourself in my shoes. Ive taken this criticism for over 10 years as a designer. This is just a rough draft, I’m not even considering doing multiple drafts to an April fools prank.

If they were real, then these would not be the alternate jerseys becuase the alternates are supposedly gold, and the regular aways are blue. Looks pretty cool though.
