I think the Warriors are going to rue the day they passed up on Joakim Noah for Brandan Wright too.

-- Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress in an interview with GSoM way back on October 8th, 2007

Noah thinks Cleveland sucks? Wait till he gets a load of Chris Mullin's draft history.

What if the Warriors had Noah instead of Wright?

Don Nelson would have never played him since he can’t run and not much of an offensive game and today, he’d be a shell of what he is in Chicago.

I like Noah a lot, he’s a double double machine. But we haven’t had Wright playing for a full season with 20+ minutes per game so I’d have to wait and see. Not necessarily saying that Wright is better than Noah, but just waiting for Wright to get some minutes to show us what he can do (we had glimpse of his potential before and he’s good).

by DubsFan408 on Apr 19, 2010 8:34 PM PDT reply actions

Eh, if we just had a healthy Biedrins, we already have an incredibly similar player to Noah.

by Missing Barry on Apr 19, 2010 8:45 PM PDT reply actions

I Like Noah's game

But I think Wright will still be the better player as long as he stays healthy. Wright can rebound, run, and has a little more polished offensive game than Noah. He just needs time to be on the court.

Wright has more offensive potential but in the end I think Noah ends up being the better player. His motor is not normal.

His college team was pretty good, I recall looking at tape of them cause they had a first pick potential guy and it turned out Noah was the sleeper on those tapes, always in the right spot at the right time .

Remember Wright WILL be better than Noah

He might not have the on-court passion and motor, but Wright has talent and he is a dedicated basketball player. He has the soft touch that other bigs don’t and that is what makes a difference in bigs. He has the height and athleticism, he can run the floor, he can rebound and box out, even offensive rebounding is there. Wright needs to improve his mid-range jumper and he will be unstoppable. He already established his goto move.

Next season, Curry to Wright is going to be a deadly and extremely effective combination, unless one of them is traded of course.

Noah is pretty dedicated no?

People seem to forget

How much of a head case Noah was coming out of college. His own team mates asked for him to be suspended. Now imagine him on this squad where he would have been the man, getting “veteran leadership” from one Mr. Jackson and butting heads with Nelson on a daily biases.

Think this team has problems now? It would have been much, much worse.

He's still a head case...

What are you thinking talkin smack to the King? Stupid. Has this guy never seen a highlight video? Don’t get a guy that can do anything he wants on the court fired up. Noah lost this series for the bulls. Not really, but i think he lost last nights game for them. He’s the reason Lebron just faced up and started dropping shots.

Wright is only 22

And had unfortunate luck with injuries. I still maintain he would have seen over 30 minutes per game last year (then again with the amount of healthy bodies the Warriors had, not saying much)

My biggest hope for 2010-11 is a healthy BWright. I just hate the idea of writing him off and trading him after he was such a high pick, showed some real potential then just got hurt. It just exemplifies the Warriors short comings during the Cohan years, lack of patience, trigger happy, mistake.

On that note, am I the only person who noticed Brandan looking bigger (again, not saying ALOT) compared to years past?

by tafkasam on Apr 20, 2010 7:48 AM PDT reply actions

Other people have noticed it, and mentioned it. And Nellie, who occasionally speaks the truth, and can be rather critical of his players when they’re not performing up to snuff (viz. Biedrins this season) totally raved about his condition and game in camp.

Totally agree with you about not selling low on him. Whenever he’s played, he’s played well. I wouldn’t expect him to step right in as a starting PF, but I’m cautiously optimistic he can surprise the doubters. I still think Wright and Randolph can be a pretty awesome 4-5 combo as they refine their games and grow into their man-bodies.

As for passing on Noah … yeah, 20:20 hindsight. As Barry points out, Noah is basically the same player as a healthy Biedrins. Awkward-looking, no “post game” to speak of, pretty easy to push around (he’s probably 15-20 pounds skinnier than AB), but a super-active and fantastic rebounder who can run the floor, block shots, catch with soft hands, and finish a little. Type of guy who just makes life easier for all his teammates.

Wright’s not in their class as a rebounder, but he’s at least as as good as them at running the floor and finishing, and has a much smoother, more refined post game than either of them. He’s also a pretty active defender at the rim. Injuries aside, I think Wright/Noah is probably close to even. If you factor in durability, it’s Noah hands-down, but that would have been hard to predict when they were coming out of college.

And then, as others mentioned, there’s the ugly mug issue. How does the son of Yannick Noah (a handsome enough dude) and Miss Sweden up looking like Joakim Noah?

There will be no extra point!

Yes for Wright next year I’d be content with him starting slow and growing into a 20-ish minute per game guy. Year+ off, and it’s not like he was Garnett or Webber to start with it will take some time. but thats okay. For all the hype certain players are getting he is not much older or in Wesley Johnsons case, he’s same age.

See I’m just not as sold on Randolph ever being a competent PF. He just makes too many errors and quite frankly, he doesn’t seem to have the work ethic required to overcome it. I realize thats harsh, but ‘cmon, look at what he’s done and more so displayed in terms of work ethic, and then look at what players like Garnett, Lebron and others with great natural gifts did at his age. People want to blast Nellie for Randolph, but I can’t. Nellie is a lot of things, but I don’t think his expectations of working hard are unrealistic. I wonder if Randolph would even see the floor for a tougher coach like Sloan? In reality, if tacking on Randolph with someone like Monta can bring us a high quality player, I won’t lose sleep.

by tafkasam on Apr 20, 2010 8:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Pretty harsh on Randolph, he’s already productive, and if I remember right, all the hype this preseason was about how great his work ethic was and how much time he put into his game…..

Also, young guys make errors. Maybe he doesn’t have a great BBIQ out there and just makes dumb decisions, but he does a lot of things to make up for it, and I’d expect something like decision making to improve with experience, and things like ballhandling, an outside shot, and general playmaking skills to improve with hard work….

Really? I recall Nellie saying he was excited when Camp started because of growth in summer league, then claiming he reverted back to the ‘old AR’ who thought he was too bigtime to rebound.

I don’t know, he leaves Warriors games early to go fight at Spin (just going to Spin in WC is enough for me to want to trade you). He’s constantly battled these work ethic issues over his first two years and a player who is supposedly the warriors “future” should not be that lazy.

I just simply think, right now his value as ‘potential’ is way higher than his actual ability.

Set up to fail

Nellie has never really developed a big man PF. Dirk is a SF in a 7ft body. If both Wright and Randolph are PFs they should be played at the PF and developed there. Instead, just because they can run and dribble alittle, Nellie has them staying outside too much, infatuated with their jump shot; eg. Troy Murphy. By doing so, their development as low post threats was retarded. Not to mention when you draft 190lbs PFs they are going to get out muscled. Play them there consistently, commit to them, toughen them up and let them build chemistry with Beidrins and Curry. Ad a consistent outside shooting SG and SF and you have the makings of a good inside out game that can run with speed from the wings.

Random question

Why do most front page posts randomly have to daft Mullin out of nowhere?

The person who writes for fools is always sure of a large audience.

by dubzfan on Apr 20, 2010 8:35 AM PDT reply actions

Let's be fair

Mullin’s GM reputation among Warriors fans fair exceeds what he ACTUALLY did. It seems like 90% of GSOM says “Let’s ignore Diogu, POB and a myriad of worst contracts in NBA and praise him because he’s a warrior legend!” Does anyone want to add up Fisher, Adonal, Dunleavey and Murphy’s contracts for me?

Any other GM did that they’d have been gone years earlier. So I don’t mind Atma presenting other POV on Mullin.

Brandon Wright has shown almost nothing

He is just a frustrating player to watch. He has so much “potential” like so many of our other guys but he is as uncoordinated as I’ve seen a player in the NBA and seriously undersized and underweight for his height. I’ll believe that he’s gaining weight when I see it and I want to see him get a chance to play some good minutes in the league but saying that Wright “WILL” be better than Noah at this point is nothing short of BS. Not only does Noah have a solid stat line and is consistent night in and night out, the intangibles that he has over Wright can’t be underestimated. He is a hustle player that has shown more fight in the series against Boston last year and so far this series against the Cavs than I’ve seen Wright show in his whole career.

“You like him? You think Brandon Wright is cool? I mean I never heard somebody say I’m going on vacation with Brandon Wright. What’s so good about Brandon Wright?”

but he is as uncoordinated as I’ve seen a player in the NBA

A career 53.6% shooter who averages 2 blocks per 36 is ‘uncoordinated’. I actually think his timing is one of his best assets. I can agree with him being passive or floating out of games, but uncoordinated? Not at all. Wright has shown to be an efficient scorer at a solid rate of 16 points per 36 minutes, an average rebounder (8.7 per 36… before you criticize go look at supposedly “top teir PFs” like David West and Lamarcus Aldridge.

Wright has just had bad luck. He was drafted into a team who could not afford to lose a single minute because they were in an extreme playoff race. His second year he was starting to see more and more time before he has his shoulder completely ruined by Gasol. It’s just unfortunate because this year could have been huge for him to get all the growing pains out of the way.

Except for the whole, you know, playing pretty well at a young age in the NBA when he’s on the court….

seriously undersized and underweight for his height

Underweight, sure? Undersized….if it’s not the same thing as “underweight”, then I’m not sure what you’re getting at. He’s tall enough, he’s really, really long….so his only problem is bulk – in other areas, he’s pretty well built.

the intangibles that he has over Wright can’t be underestimated

What are these intangibles, exactly? How do you know he has them, and how do you know he has them over Wright? What do they do, exactly, to help his team win? Evidence supporting answers to these questions is good.

Man,

You know if we drafted Noah we’d have TWO Biedrins.

I’m still not disappointed that we traded for Wright and not Noah. Although I was a fan of Wright’s game at UNC. Still, to early to write him off. And just cause Givony thought Noah would be better for us, doesn’t make him right.

If Noah = Biedrins, I'll take 2 Biedrins vs 1 Biedrins and 1 Wright

We could trade one of the Biedrins for some talent (Amare, Bosh, etc). We can’t even trade Wright for a bag of balls.

One way to look at it

Dubs have Wright through next year, and a qualifying offer of 4.5 mil the following year. Randolph can be had for roughly the same price, (a little less) through the 2012-13 season. Both of their actual player values have yet to be determined as neither has shown an undeniable asset to a good team.

Noah may be in the East, but is one of the passion players on the Bulls. Randolph has the jumper that Noah covets, and Wright has the post moves and length to be larger than most 6’9" PF’s. However Noah’s value will increase solely on the basis that he is a starter on a playoff team. I am happy that the Warrior’s record has put a damper on both Wright and Randolph’s value because it becomes plausible to keep them both for the next 4-5 years while they develop. Losing either of them for a superstar and getting rid of Maggette’s contract wouldn’t anger me as much as a crappy trade, but otherwise I don’t see any reason to trade.

It will be interesting to see if Tolliver comes back and they both have to compete with him for minutes. In many ways Tolliver is similar to Noah, more so than Wright anyways.
