I agree
Seriously, the mathematical chances of Jeremy Lin becoming a GSW just went up a tiny bit.

Warriors exchange second-round draft picks with Portland. Warriors get No. 44 and cash more money in Cohan’s pockets for No. 34.

They supposedly got a cool $1M for the swap.
It’s all good though, the 2nd rounder will be cut before training camp so we’re all good.

IS THIS A JOKE?
we had a pick right after the first round. WOW.
LARRY BUY THE TEAM ALREADY. COHAN AND HIS DUM MOVES.
no need to overreact. in all likelihood, the 34th pick is no more likely to make the team than the 44th pick.

Exactly. Almost entirely irrelevant, but yes, it does put us in a slightly worse position from a basketball standpoint.

If there were any year for this move to be relevant, it would be this year, considering the depth of the draft.

but they add up. Boy, do they add up. For a Warriors fan its been death by a thousand cuts these last few years. Cohan can’t sell fast enough for us.
Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
Or that Portland sees someone they like in in the early 2nd round. My guess is that Portland probably knows what they’re doing and the W’s FO are slaves to Cohans pinchers.
"Or that Portland sees someone they like in in the early 2nd round. "
look at their 2nd round pick draft history since Pritchard joined the team in 2003 as the director of player personnel. it sucks.
2009
2 Dante Cunningham
2 Jon Brockman
2 Patrick Mills
2008
2 Joey Dorsey
2 Omer Asik
2 Mike Taylor
2007
2 Josh McRoberts
2 Derrick Byars
2 Taurean Green
2 Demetris Nichols
in 06 they got another 1st which turned into Joel Freeland… yeah… & in the 2nd round they picked up James White.
in 05 they also got an extra 1st, Linas Kleiza (who was not picked by the team he was traded to) & in the 2nd they got Ricky Sanchez
in 04 they had an extra 1st & got Sergei Monia & picked up Ha Seung Jin in the 2nd.
in 03 they got Nedzad Sinanovic in the 2nd.
by homer simpson on Jun 21, 2010 4:59 PM PDT up reply actions
Several of those picks were packaged to get other players
For instance, Dorsey was traded along with POR’s pick for HOU’s pick and POP picked Nic Batum before the Spurs could nab him. Brockman became Pendergraph, Asik and Taylor were traded for futures, McRoberts was a throw in on the Jerryd Bayless trade, Byars became Peterri Kopnen and Nichols was traded for a future 2nd. Green played one season and was traded for Von Wafer.

true but that's loser mentality
In any case, picking 10 spots above still gives you a better chance of lucking out on a better prospect.
Meanwhile, the cash doesn’t really help you in a basketball standpoint nor, I imagine, will help expedite the sale. It’s just the owner trying to cut some corners.
They believe (and Nellie said it himself) they can get a player of equal value through the D-League. But guess what, the D-League option remains the same picking 34 or 44. And if I’m not mistaken, 2nd round picks doesn’t get guaranteed contracts so why not stay at 34, if someone slips then great if not then don’t sign him and look into the the D-League.
Like you said, it’s not an influential deal, but it’s very telling of how clueless this franchise is in terms of building a winning franchise. Not that it comes as a surprise to any of us.
Second round pick can really help building a franchise!
Why so much rage we will pick even better player from d-league.
I'm sorry rage is too strong of a word I just don't get the panic.
Of course it’s sarcastic because it’s overreacting compareing selling down from 34 to 44 with building a franchise.
lol. you went from rage to panic
I’m simply implying that while history suggests that this will likely not impact the franchise at all, we’re taking out the very slight chance we do luck out and get somebody that defy the odds for nothing that benefits this team basketball wise
also, I retracted my statement about that (see below).
"but it’s very telling of how clueless this franchise is in terms of building a winning franchise."
it is?
it’s very telling of how this franchise’s owner puts money 1st, but building a winning franchise has nothing to do with buying or selling 2nd round picks.
it has everything to do with getting superstars.

i stand corrected. it was a strong accusation on my part and this ^^ is more along the lines of what I intended to say.
I bet what happens is a pretty good player will drop from the first round and the blazers will snatch’em up.
Also means that the warriors feel that a player they are eyeing will still be there in the mid second. I.E. Ryan Richards, Artsiom Parakhouski, Derrick Caracter.

Not worthless
If a team like the Blazers is willing to pay a million bucks to move up, clearly there is value in the pick. Just another example of a basketball team making another non basketball related move that doesn’t the team in anyway.

see Blazers above track record on additional picks.
the Blazers are good b/c of how they used their top 10 picks. namely Roy (though they technically didn’t draft him, they drafted Randy Foye. for all intent & purposes, they were the ones who told Minny who to pick) & to a lesser extent Oden & Lamarcus Aldridge. not the extra picks they’ve been blowing money on to get.

? that’s a lot of money to spend over the years on a couple of role players that statistically don’t distinguish themselves from D-League players like Lou Amundsen, Chris “Birdman” Anderson, Matt Barnes, Ramon Sessions, Kelenna Azubuike, CJ Watson & Reggie Williams among others.
though i’m not sure playing those 2 instead of Bayless or Miller/Webster or Blake/Outlaw (the year before) added any more wins to the last 2 seasons totals, but if you want to count them, fine. either way the track record is poor, especially when it comes to 2nd rounders where they’ve hit on nobody.
even if Allen never spent any of that money, Portland would still be good b/c of who they drafted at the top of the draft. dub fans shouldn’t lose sight of that. as long as Cohan doesn’t do anything outrageous with their best pieces, i’m not going to have a heart attack over something which isn’t likely to be a big deal & that i already knew about him.

As a Blazer fan I mostly agree with you.
Second round picks usually don’t pan out. However…
Batum is a truly amazing defender and probably the third most important player on the team. He was basically traded for Dorsey. The Blazers also turned down a Gerald Wallace for Batum trade last Summer. The guy is a baller and was terrific this year (4th best TS% in the NBA) despite having a bum shoulder.
Still… in the end this trade probably won’t matter and there are far worse things than trading down in the second round.

They really turned down Crash for Batum?
As an outsider I’d do that in a heartbeat. I’m not sure Batum will ever be as unique as Crash is.

And I bet the Warriors want to trade their pick with Maggs. Someone suggested their recent moves look like a smokescreen to entice Detroit to trade up for Cousins if he’s there. Maggette + 6 for Prince + 7.

Moving down ten spots in this draft could be a pretty big mistake.
Relative to mistakes in the second round, but still, completely unnecessary move.

This has to be a joke, right?
Portland always knows how to work the draft, they just have to find a sucker to fleece. Somebody step in and do an intervention before the guy sells the first rounder, too!
The 34th pick will land a rotation player. Now, FOR PORTLAND!
Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, the guys I want them to pick with that 2nd rounder, Paulo Prestes or Nemanja Bjelica will probably still be available even at 44. But this move does not inspire confidence.
The 34th pick will land a rotation player.
Doubtful. That’s not generally the norm….
2006 – Solomon Jones, Paul Davis, PJ Tucker
2007 – Marcus Williams, Nick Fazekas, Glen Davis
2008 – Joey Dorsey, Mario Chalmers, DeAndre Jordan
2009 – Dante Cunningham, Sergio Llull, DaJuan Summers
Those are the 33, 34 and 35 picks the last few years. So what, Chalmers, Baby Davis and Jordan are the only rotation players in there? I guess maybe Cunningham qualifies? I’d take Jordan, but the other two/three? Meh. We seem to find better talent than them in the D-League. I’m not too worried. I mean, I don’t like this move, but eh, it probably won’t make any sort of meaningful difference to the future of this franchise.

Dleague talent
Our options to find that D-League talent doesn’t change if we pick 34 instead of 44. And if I’m not mistaken 2nd round contracts are not guaranteed. So while it is not a game changer it STILL is a stupid move.
While it’s true we mostly likely will end up with a non-rotation player, based on that list and the players you named as rotation players, there’s a 25% we luck out on one. It’s not a bad percentage.
Yes, a rotation player.
This isn’t an ordinary draft with the lockout looming and a LOT of players declaring this year. Next year will suck, this year will probably be the best ever for 2nd rounders.

The most offensive thing about this is the amount of times we’ve heard Riley swear up and down that he’s never been told to make a money-saving move. What the hell is this? strategic? He traded out of the early second round in one of the very few drafts where legitimate value could still be available there.
First we lose the 3rd pick odds to Nellie’s record, then we lose the 4th pick to the lottery, now this. Oh and don’t forget Cousins’ “isn’t coming here”. Things just keep getting better this off-season…

We are the masters of D-league we will get much better player from there.
and I say it again
It doesn’t matter if we pick 34 or 44. The same players will be available to us to scout in the D-League so why sacrifice a chance, albeit minimal, to draft a possible steal.
One thing is clear is that while our top 5 players are
middle of the pack talent level. Lacking the true superstar. Our 6-12 players are pretty deep. With our team healthy who is our worst player? Tolliver? Thats pretty darn good, so I guess the likelihood of a 2nd rounder making an impact on this team was very slim.

Draft is way too unpredictable
Yeah, there ar bunch of draft boards, but some team always screws them and causes other teams to make different picks and all estimates and assumptions are out the window by the 10th pick. If you really think a guy would be available at 44, you wait until 30 are off the board and see what players are left and what teams are looking for the pick, and what teams are calling you to trade up. This I think is a clear sign they have no clue and really don’t care who is available in the second round. Then again, if I was on my way out, I don’t think that I would care that much about a second round pick.

Man...
I really wanted Jarvis Vernado, Greivis Vasquez, or Quincy Pondexter.
Theres still some guys at the bottom of the second that would at least be interesting.. Dexter Pittman, Sherron Collins, John Scheyer, Da’Sean Butler, or Devin Ebanks.. basically id just like to see a big name college guy try to make the team and suprise us, better then picking a guy no ones heard of and then cutting him.. more exciting at least
We might still be able to get Varnado or Vasquez.
I’m in love with Varnado in particular – a shot blocking forward who protects the rim? Sign me up.
Bad move
All you people defending this move, I don’t get where you are coming from. Clearly, the Warriors will have fewer players to choose from when they pick, and thus less chance of getting a good player. Second rounders don’t have value? What about Gilbert Arenas and Monta Ellis? Or Carlos Boozer? Not saying there is anybody of that quality that will be available at 34, but there might be. And if he’s still available at 44, he would have been at 34 too. Selling the pick makes no sense, unless Cohan is totally out of cash and needs to stay afloat until he makes his hundreds of millions of profit from the sale. Just a stupid loser move.
I think teams have alot more money now to do better research in late picks

you’re reading into things that people aren’t saying.
everyone agrees this is a bad move. people are just saying that it’s unlikely to matter, so it’s not worth throwing a hissy fit over. basically, i’m not happy, but it’s not like it’s like we lost out on Cousins or Johnson or whatnot.
throwing out the exceptions to the rule don’t help your argument. just b/c you hit the lottery once doesn’t mean it’s likely to happen again.
Selling the pick makes no sense, unless Cohan is totally out of cash and needs to stay afloat…..isn’t this why he’s selling the team in the 1st place? money troubles spurred by tax evasion? anyway ESPN is reporting it cost $2 million to move up 10 spots in the 2nd round. i would take that deal in a heartbeat if i owned the Warriors, and i’m guessing most of would too if we were in the same position. hell, i don’t think Larry Ellison turns that down. link
plus we all know Cohan is a money first owner, whining over 10 draft spots in the 2nd round just strikes me as going overboard. in reality, i was hoping to get you guys to see it’s not that big of a deal, but if you guys want to throw a tantrum about it, i don’t blame you.

How do you know he will be a good player? How can you predict 34 will be better then 44?
Like Homer said 2 mil. $ is a lot of money to move from 44 to 34. I’m not happy that we traded picks but I’m not losing my mind either. Does anyone remember some people being happy that Warriors won meaningless games at the end of the season which lead(not directly but still) to us pick at 6 instead 5. Now this is something to be pissed about since this is(common opinion) five players draft.
Seriously, if I was in charge and had the option of pocketing $1M and moving down 10 spots or staying put….sorry to say guys, I’d sell you out in a heartbeat. ;)

If guys like James, Robinson, Pondexter, Stephenson, or Ebanks don’t slip to us, then they should take Darington Hobson. He’s a smooth lefty who could end up being a steal. If he’s not around, then maybe take a guy like Sherron Collins if he’s there, but I’d rather they get a 3 with that pick and get an undrafted point guard to back up Curry. Preferably Jeremy Lin.
