How the Maggette trade affects our draft and free agency hopes

Obviously, this trade revamped our roster a bit. We traded our starting small forward for a couple of expiring contracts who will be on the team more for their veteran leadership than their ability to go out and play. So this is our new roster as of now:

Point guards: Stephen Curry / CJ Watson

Shooting Guards: Monta Ellis / Anthony Morrow / Reggie Williams / Charlie Bell

Small Forwards: Kelenna Azubuike / Devean George

Power Forwards: Brandan Wright / Anthony Randolph / Anthony Tolliver / Vladimir Radmanovic

Centers: Andris Biedrins / Ronny Turiaf / Chris Hunter / Dan Gadzuric

This roster has 16 players which means that one would have to go anyways (sorry Hunter), but the main point is that our biggest weakness now becomes the small forward spot. Azubuike showed us at the beginning of last year that he was capable of taking on a bigger role with the team, but anyone coming off a serious injury like he has needs to be watched carefully to make sure that he doesn't re-injure it. Plus, at 6-5, 220, Azubuike is undersized for a small forward which means that his body could easily wear down from guarding bigger players over too many minutes.

So, this leaves us with our options:

we can draft a small forward

or

we can draft a big man and try our luck in the free agency of signing a small forward

The small forwards that may be available when it's our turn to draft are:

Al Farouq Aminu:

(sorry, but it seems impossible that Wes Johnson would be available)

Of these 3 players though, I would take Aminu in a heartbeat. He is the best rebounder, which is our biggest need as a team, he's committed to playing defense, and he also has the most potential. I know that his shooting isn't the greatest, but is that what we really need as a team? Our team is filled with shooters and we need a player that can help fill our other needs and I think Aminu is that player.

As for drafting a big man, likely either Monroe or Cousins,  I think that in doing so there won't be enough minutes to go around at the center spot. Biedrins and Turiaf are already going to get playing time and I can already picture Cousins demanding a trade because of a lack of PT. So, if we were to draft a big man I would lean to drafting Monroe.

Now it's down to two players. Aminu and Monroe. I'm not sure which one will become the better player, but only because of the need of the position I would take Aminu. I brought up earlier the idea of drafting a big and signing a SF in the free agency, but the chances of us getting a big name SF like Joe Johnson or Rudy Gay aren't too high so I wouldn't think it's worth taking the risk of trying that. So, maybe another trade will happen before the draft, but as of now I am hoping that in two days Austin Powers... erm, I mean David Stern will be saying "With the 6th pick of the 2010 NBA Draft, the Golden State Warriors select Al-Farouq Aminu."
