Around SBN: Shaq As Orlando Magic General Manager? Don't Bet On It

Free Agent Frenzy

Multiple teams are bidding for LeBron, most hope to land LeBron and another big name.  This means some teams are going to be left in the lurch.  Obviously, some will be happy to "settle" with Wade, or Stoudamire.  How will it all play out?  Most importantly, how do the Warriors benefit?

Predictions:

LeBron in Chitown with Bosh - and soon after, a title.

Wade stays in Miami and Stoudamire joins the nontaxable income too - Beasley somehow ends up with Warriors as a SF? hmmmm.

NYC gets Joe Johnson and try to convince NY fans he will be the savior  (somehow, they don't buy this)

Boozer is a mystery - I think he'll resign for the Jazz though - but maybe Nets get him. I get a feeling the other top agents don't want to play with him - he may not be one of the cool kids. If Nets get Boozer and Rudy Gay - watch out.

Dallas keeps hope alive and resigns Dirk Diggler - they lose in first round again.

Warriors will benefit if somehow Boozer and Dirk end up back East.  If Joe Johnson stays in ATL then we have a shot at Childress being open to returning to the Bay. any other ways they might benefit?

your thoughts?

No Beasley, please. I think you’re right about LeBron and Bosh in Chicago, though.

Le Bron goes to Chicago.
Bosh to NY
Boozer to Miami
Wade stays
Dirk stays
Johnson goes to Mavs but shoulda gone to Chicago
Beasley goes somewhere but not here

As a warriors fan my first question is how much cap room we have and 2nd, are the owners willing to pay for the luxury tax.?

I don’t think Lebron with go to chicago. He wants to be himself. not jordan.
I wish we could attract Wade here. Sign and trade some picks and PF’s.
Does Rudy Gay need to be onthe ball? like iguadala?
I think we have enough offense without maggette. I was rooting for aminu in the draft for the lockdown perimeter help.

I could see boozer running to miami. maybe even amare. sign and trade beasely away.
Wade is a beast and people want to play with him. Monta should pay attention.
Never to impressed with bosh. But i could see him trying to work with Lebron.
I think Johnson stays. And i think childress would run well in GS.

Last question. Lebron gets more money if he signs and gets traded. What does chicago/NY markets do for his income? Does he want to WIN? this season or in a couple?

by DrDave on Jun 28, 2010 2:16 PM PDT reply actions

Beasley is not an SF. And he is the wrong fit. He needs to go somewhere where he is the 1st option on offense.

Is there an opening somewhere there for us to grab up Noah? That would be awesome.

If they get a PF (which they will) Noah is the Center. No way they get rid of him still on his rookie deal.

this was actually before the draft

and since then really important trades have gone on, so Chicago’s actually on top with about 30mil with Miami close behind

The graphic on the screen on ESPN a few minutes ago said that the Heat lead the way with $44 million to spend. After that, it’s the Knicks at $35 million and the Bulls at $30 million. The Nets are at $27 million.

Nice starting 5, huh?

Rose
LeBron

+ Taj, Miller, Warrick, any and all savvy vets who might jump aboard for the ring(s). (Ray Allen, for example, seems like a nice fit…)

Man, was dumping Hinrich a genius move for the Bulls. If this comes through (and an NBA exec quoted in the NYT seems to think it’s a done deal) they can book their tix to the finals now. Kind of scary to see so much talent in one place, but f it has to happen, I demand nothing short of total humiliation for Kobe and the Lakers…

That team is super stacked, but man are they gonna be bad at shooting 3’s. But with a team like that, you don’t even need to shoot 3’s. You think they might go after Morrow?

You think Ray Allen would take the minimum? Because unless LeBron and Bosh take sub-max contracts, that’s all the Bulls would have available this offseason.

actually, Hinrich’s trade left them room for the Bulls to sign THREE big time free agents, so Allen would be able to get a fine amount

What’s the attraction of chicago? Why would Lebron wanna go there over NewYork or Clippers or even good old GoldenState? Seems like an Ellison/James collaboration would be right up Larry’s alley? Why mess around with obscure sailing boats when you can own the best basketball player in the world?

What’s the attraction of chicago?

Talent

Bulls have more legit players in place to surround FAs than any other of the franchises with significant cap space

Don’t know enough about LJ & whether he would recoil or relish playing in MJ’s shaddow – he’s still young and could possibly even surpass MJ in his own building (admittedly, there’s a lot of ground to cover – as in getting the first ring – before heading down that path) just hard to know what’s going to motivate him more between rings and staying in Cleveland.

by hardcore on Jun 28, 2010 4:41 PM PDT up reply actions

What’s the attraction of chicago? Talent??

Well the talent will follow Lebron. LAClippers for instance would be a better place to live than the windy city and Lebron and Kobe would be a big rivalry in the same town and worth lots of endorsement bucks to the king? and think how sweet it would be for him to be teamed up with one of the richest men in the world at a progressive location like Golden State.

You mean because it’s warmer? I’m pretty sure they have central heating in Chicago.

Haha, I think you’ve been listening to too much Beach Boys, Skep. Wherever he is, I’m sure LeBron will have no problem espying attractive women in scanty attire.

Being a kid from the midwest, he’s unlikely to share your eagerness to make SoCal the center of the basketball universe.

I dunno, somehow I imagine he wouldn’t mind joining hands with Oprah and the POTUS to form a Chicago/midwest axis of power. Call me crazy, but that seems somewhat more alluring to me than shaking the old, slimy hand of Donald Sterling.

There will be no extra point!

by Sleepy Freud on Jun 29, 2010 10:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Clipper issues ...

Donald Sterling is a problem. He recently had to pony up some fines, IIRC, for discriminatory practices in his housing buildings.

The other issue is being the second fiddle in LA. It’s hard to imagine that the Clips, even with him, could achieve the mindshare in this city where they’re clearly the second team.

The positives for the Clippers are the Southern California climate and the proximity to the entertainment industry, which does hold some appeal for him. LeBron is frequently doing shoots, etc, when the team is in town and that would make life a lot easier.

The Clippers also have a potentially really solid foundation to surround him with. Chicago’s is better – particularly if they can add Bosh, too – but compares to the Nets, Knicks, Cavs, and Heat-not-named-Wade, the Clips probably have the best roster.

Last I read was that Chicago could not offer two players the max. It’s be the max for Lebron and 13m for the #2 guy. Will Bosh leave 4m a year on the table to play with Lebron?

by Ronaldinho on Jun 29, 2010 12:21 PM PDT up reply actions

proximity to the entertainment industry, which does hold some appeal for him

I wonder if the globality of LeBron and the NBA in general doesn’t obviate this kind of proximity. To the extent that geography matters, I’d guess LA would be down LeBron’s list after NY/NJ (Jay-Z, Madison Ave., ESPN, EST, etc.), CLE/CHI (midwestern roots), and possibly even Portland (the Swoosh). Throw in the Sterling and the second-banana factors and it’s hard to believe the Clips have any kind of realistic shot. Even the basketball fit seems off, as Baron’s ball-dominance and wretched outside shooting would be a poor complement to LeBron’s game (though LeBron and Griffin could be one of the most fearsome forward combos of all time).

Last I read was that Chicago could not offer two players the max. It’s be the max for Lebron and 13m for the #2 guy.

Hmm … everything I’ve read seems to indicate that with the Hinrich trade they now have enough room to sign two max guys. At the same time, the figure I keep hearing is that they’re $30M under the cap, which doesn’t quite seem to add up to two max deals. Any capologists want to weigh in?

There will be no extra point!

I don’t know anything about sterling’s problems or ownership record but I know Lebron would not be second banana to Kobe if he came to LA. There would be an interesting tug -o-war between the Clips and the Lakers for SoCal and thus NBA dominance and I think Lebron would win it. If I was him I’d enjoy competing with the lakers and kobe for the city keys more than going to a city with no such dynamic.
I don’t think Boom would have any problems working with Lebron, he’s a pretty intelligent guy and knows a good thing when he sees it.
Lebron to the Warriors working with Ellison’s deep pockets would be even better but I don’t know if we could pull off the trades to make it possible? So I’d rather put my hopes on the Clips as it seems more do-able.

Lights please, lights please, turn off the lights.

I know Lebron would not be second banana to Kobe

It’s not about LeBron v. Kobe; it’s about the Lakers’ storied history v. the Clippers’ laughable one. Yeah, I’m sure the presence of LeBron on the Clips would attract a ton of bandwagoners, but I doubt it could come close to erasing he fundamentally gaping divide between the Lakers’ and Clippers’ brands.

I don’t think Boom would have any problems working with Lebron, he’s a pretty intelligent guy and knows a good thing when he sees it.

Er, where did I question BD’s intelligence? I agree that he’s a very smart guy. Obviously he’d love to play with LeBron. My point was purely about skills: he’s always been a poor perimeter shooter, and seems to be getting worse. His strength is in dominating the ball, setting up his teammates, and taking it to the rim. He’s basically a homeless man’s LeBron. Just seems like a poor hoops fit; plus his game has declined to the point where, setting aside questions of “fit,” he doesn’t do a whole lot to help a team win.

I’d rather put my hopes on the Clips as it seems more do-able.

Yeah, the Clips are more “doable” than the Ws because of their salary situation, but the Warriors seem like a much better hoops fit to me (LeBron + his Akron BFF Steph = money). Alas, on planet earth, both seem like total pipe dreams.

There will be no extra point!

by Sleepy Freud on Jun 29, 2010 3:17 PM PDT up reply actions

LeBron is not going to get the number of rings achieved by Jordon and it would be strange walking past that jordon stature every day.

If LeBron can get past all that and the constant Jordon comparisons especially if he doesnt achieve two or three championships for Chicago…well Chicago would be a good fit..large market/great town/they really really want him and same region as Clevland. This will be interesting to see if he goes there.

by Only In Fairfax on Jun 29, 2010 10:21 AM PDT up reply actions

it’s really fascinating – never before have so many top tier free agents been on the market – imagine for a minute that not two, but three major FA took less than max $ to team up with together with an already strong roster – either in Chi or joining Wade in Miami – in order to make history as a team for the ages? Doubtful, but now is one of the few times when it’s even possible. I would have liked LJ to have held his “summit” regardless of NBA brass saying they shouldn’t (what happened to freedom of assembly?) just to see what they could do, who’d be in the inner circle, etc.

as for the Jordan effect, imagine LJ has the confidence and stones (and hand-picked FA) to go for it and claim the mantle to the throne on Michael’s own turf – that’d be the challenge for the ages.

What about Monta for Lamar Odom?

There’s some chatter over at ESPN that the Lakers may be willing to move Odom for another scorer to support Kobe. Sure, Odom is beyond his prime, but he could provide some veteran leadership and maybe help AR develop. Not sure if the Lakers go for this, but it’s a though.

Man I cant remember a Free Agency off season like this one...

so many possibilities on what could happen. Of course for the Warriors benefit you hope Dirk, Boozer and Amare all go east. That would be a bigger blow to Dallas and the Suns more than Utah but its a blow none the less. It would make life a little easier here but not too much. We are still going to be at the bottom of the conference.

I see all the top dogs going first and then those guys trying to recruit the role players from there. Guys like Ray Allen, Reddick and Morrow could gain a lot of interest for their shooting ability and may not require a lot of cash.

I think it kinda goes down like this…. LBJ and Bosh go to the Bulls. Wade stays in Miami and they also get Boozer or Amare. Nets strike out with the big guys but sign Boozer or Lee and possibly Gay to an offer sheet. New York is the biggest loser out of all the teams but may pry Johnson from ATL and sign Lee. It wont happen but I’d love to see a Wade, James and Bosh team. Thats definitely a reason for me to buy NBA League Pass. It wont go down that way but if the Chicago scenario happens I’d love to see another team load up also. Maybe Miami with Wade, Johnson and Boozer/Dirk/Amare ?

by CSalMJS on Jun 28, 2010 4:39 PM PDT reply actions

don’t forget that one of the teams under the cap is LAC, who figure to pick up whoever is left without a chair when the music stops – they have enough coin, and enough talent that if Baron gets right they could easily vault into the middle of the WC playoff picture

by hardcore on Jun 28, 2010 4:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah definitely

They could definitely head in the right direction if they landed a SF with impact. LBJ would never go there because L.A. is kobe’s city but a “right” Baron with Gordon, James, Griffin and Kaman. One hope for the dubs is that some big name player doesn’t get the deal he wants and resigns with his old team for a one year deal to test waters next season (Joe Johnson, Dirk, Boozer maybe) and then the warriors – with new owners snatch him up.
