My take on the Warriors' new logo/jersey

The Golden State Warriors received mixed reaction when the unveiled their new logo and a picture of the new jersey was leaked a couple of days ago. While the logo was received with more open arms, the leaked jersey received just about the same amount of criticism as when the Warriors announced their draft pick last Thursday. A lot of people have already tried to make some tweaks and changes to the jersey putting their own spin on it to try and make it look better. I thought I'd put my own spin on how I think the new jersey should've been. What started as an attempt to make a quick tweak turned into hours or research and designing.

So I decided to use the Warriors' new logo as the base and keep in mind the direction they are going: An updated look of "The City" era. With this in mind, I decided to look through the all nba jerseys as well as other timeless jerseys like the Bulls and Celtics. I came away with two things: Keep the colors simple. Keep the look simple.

As you can see below, the Warriors' jerseys before the 90's has been pretty simple and all of them arguably tops those last two. Which brings me to my first big design decision: Round collar, no stripe on the side.

Next in line for me was color layout. First of all, pardon if the colors are a bit off. Still rusty with my photoshop skills and kinda slack off on some parts like the collar and getting the color absolutely right. I just figured, the general idea of which color goes where is more important.

I still think that if we were to pay homage to "The City" jerseys, having a yellow home jersey was essential. But if the league won't allow such thing, I decided to make a white version as well. I wasn't overly too happy with the white jersey which led me to creating 3 versions of the jersey. And without further ado, here's what I came up with:

VERSION 1: UPDATED CITY JERSEYS

via i50.tinypic.com

VERSION 2:  1966-1997 MASHUP JERSEY

15cj3av_medium

via i50.tinypic.com

VERSION 3:  BLUE-WHITE JERSEY

152ic9f_medium

via i50.tinypic.com

About the FONT: Just like the Warriors most likely did, went down my font list and chose one I like. I went with a simple font and one that resembles the font from the 1986-1988 jerseys. I can probably design better but decided to leave that to a paying gig.

Decided to have some fun at the end. Here's some alternate colors...

1. Based this on the San Francisco jersey but came out looking more like the Cavs throwback

2. Just really love the black/yellow combo so had to do it

3. Another possible option with the original colorways.

Anyone who votes for the take-a-leaked jerseys over these beauties needs to have their eyes and head examined.

I ‘m not feeling them, they look too cheap to me,
I haven’t seen anything I like as well at the recent white with blue and gold Warriors across the chest and dark blue and gold away unis, they have a understated classy look.

Lights please, lights please, turn off the lights.

Curious why you think it’s “cheaper” than the leaked version. The logo is the same. Lightzout added the disclaimer that he’s not proposing a specific typeface. Does the trendy curvy V-neck and gratuitous yellow side paneling make it look more expensive to you? Is it “cheap” to set the TEAM NAME in a size appropriate for a sports uniform, rather than a size better suited to legalese?

Heck, if they’re going to set “Golden State” in that fine print, we might as well change the team name to the “Some Restrictions Apply Warriors”…

There will be no extra point!

Curious why you think it’s "cheaper" than the leaked version.

Just the simplicity of it. I think the retro warriors unis with the City and cable car look cheap too. I grew up with these old styles so they are tied to that lower standard of living era in my mind. The 08 style with the blue and gold slanted WARRIORS lettering just looks richer in texture to me.

Lights please, lights please, turn off the lights.

Fair enough, but we’re not talking about the last generation unis: we’re comparing the leaked new unis to Lightzout’s improved version of them. I personally don’t see any greater degree of “texture” or “richness” on the leaked unis: I just see a bunch of careless and/or arbitrary decisions. What about the leaked unis do you like better than Lightzout’s versions?

There will be no extra point!

I like the stripes on the side, but I like them better the way someone posted with blue stripes lining the yellow stripes. I’d prefer a plain V or a round collar to that scalloped bottom V I think, it looks too much like a girls top.
I actually don’t like the new logo as much as the 08 Warriors logo, the new one looks like a seahorse head peeking in a porthole to me, all it needs is a big inquisitive eye.

Lights please, lights please, turn off the lights.

I agree. The leaked jersey might not look that cool in the photo but may possibly look really fresh on the court. I think the leaked photo also might be a replica jersey. And those of you who rock swingmen and authentics know the huge difference between those and replicas.

Updating The City jerseys was the way to go for the organization. Those were the best throwbacks in the league besides the Sixers’. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it if you’re trying to make an “old-school” jersey.

R&D = A bunch of clueless idiots compromising on some amalgam of bad ideas, the result of which no one is pleased with.

This jersey is clearly an attempt to force a “modern spin” onto a retro design. The font looks forced and cheap, the bridge’s skewed look is is cliche and tacky, and those collars were out of style before they even made it onto the jersey. The whole thing screams “cheap product”.

Successful franchises use jersey’s that engender a sense of history, not packaging. That means a round collar, like a real basketball jersey, and a font and design that the consumer is familiar with, like “version 2”.

Curious what you prefer about the leaked ones, Doc. Is it the color? The side paneling? The filled-in logo? The minuscule type?

I can totally live with the trendy collar and yellow side paneling. I prefer classic, but I can see an argument for doing something a bit more contemporary and designy. What I really can’t see how any one can think the size of the team name — and the inclusion of the full team and place name — is anything but completely amateurish (or “Rec League”). It just makes us look clueless and weak.

In its defense, since under Cohan we have been clueless and weak, you could say it’s honest about the product…

Well, Sleepy, I’m just not as type-A as most people are, I guess. I think the new design is fine the way it is and I’m not going to nit-pick about the font or the size or the paneling.

It’s just not a big deal to me. The players will look great in the new design and HD cameras will be able to pick up the small font.

I “prefer” the leaked ones because that’s what we’ll be seeing and I’m not going to get antsy over what it could be or should be. It is what it is and I like it just fine.

agree and disagree

I think font carries a lot of weight when it comes to the jerseys. The very basic font I went with makes it look very old school. But, like I said in the original post, I decided to pick basic ones from my list. I wanted to showcase more that way the logo should have been handled on the jersey. I wish I’d taken more time on it but basically imagine this:

With that my version of logo instead, Warriors instead of the city (maybe a little edgier font), and perhaps a simpler name and number in the back (no BART please!). I think that’s a jersey that will stand the test of time.

If you look at teams like the Celtics, Bulls, Lakers, Blazers Their jerseys has pretty much stayed the same yet you don’t see them as something that needs to be replaced. Some my balk at it being t0o plain/boring but most people agree those are still some of the better/best jerseys in the league. Trims and little changes are applied but the base has remain the same. This leaked jersey just doesn’t have that lasting effect.

If anything, it resembles more of the dreaded logo slapped jerseys of the 90’s

Hope Lightz0ut dosen’t mind if i throw my idea for the unis around here instead of opening a new thread

This is a version i’ve worked with having in mind the design that it’s suppossed that the organization have choose. I will really like to have give the whole concept a new turn.
Anyway as Lightz=ut has mentioned the Bridge symbol it’s more than ok, but there’s a hard problem with font choosing and using, as he has said if we take a look at the classic unis like Chicago or Boston it’s the clean and bold “naming” statement the one that rules. The use of a logo with text in the front of the uni it’s not a bad concept as we all love the “the City” designs, maybe one of the brilliants designs in the whole nba history. So if we’re going to combine logo + text, this one shouldn’t be used as a complementary piece of the logo, instead it has to come with a bold identity, strong enough to work without the logo and consistent enough to work in it’s own.

As i said just anothe thought from an Barcelonian point of view! Just let me know what your thoughts are.

BTW: yes, the AMMO name and number it’s on purpose, keep him in the bay!
