Barnes turned down $2.6M from Orlando; it sounds like he’s more concerned with a payday than signing with a contender. I don’t think Riley would offer him much more than that, though.

wouldn’t say he’s a bad coach, but be real…Dwight Howard is why they are contenders every year.

by SuperStarAR on Jul 12, 2010 2:35 PM PDT up reply actions

have you seen the Magic roster? Also, Howard has been recorded many times imitating the coach. SVG’s contant yelling creates a situation that when he is serious with the yelling and trying to get the team’s attention they do not take him seriously. The Magic will never win a championship with SVG coaching.

by Hundredthousanddollarpluswhipmaster on Jul 12, 2010 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah but there's other contending teams that want him.

Maybe he’s just being picky with which championship team to sign with. There’s 6 teams that contacted him, excluding the Warriors. The Lakers want him, too.

We might be able to make a move for a legit player some time this year with the trade exception, the expiring contracts, and a piece.

by SuperStarAR on Jul 12, 2010 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Correct

A TPE must be used by itself.

It can be a part of a bigger deal, but it has to be broken up with part of the deal being TPE for something by itself.

It could help a big move

By taking in someone the other team needs to lose in order for the cash to work.

Basically gives more flexibility to any big moves we want to make. (at least that’s how I look at it)

Riley has really surprised me this season

I was very worried about the Lee trade, but now I see he is thinking many steps ahead. With the signing of D.Wright along with Lee, we have solidified a starting lineup at least and left a ton of room for additional moves.

The only move this year I’ve had problems with is the draft choice, otherwise all the trades have been very very nice.

It looks like even with these ‘big’ moves, we still leave room for new management to make even bigger moves.

With: the trade exception, C.Bell, Ellis, Gaz and Vlad rad expirings we will have a lot of options before the trade deadline. We might even be able to make a move for a teir 2 star SF/SG (Iggy, Granger)

On a bad team first priority is making the starting lineup good. The two moves we have done so far have significantly improved or projected starting lineup…

Stop having a knee jerk reaction and see how things play out…there are more moves that will happen, guaranteed.

I never said he'd be a star

And having the best shooter in the NBA as your 2nd string 2 is pretty good. Look at our playoff team, great starting lineup. But our bench was just okay with Barnes, Pietrus and Harrington/Ellis (Ellis actually started the majority of his games that year). If we had a stronger bench we might have beaten Utah

Barring injury, where is Morrow going to play?

Monta is going to get 40 mins a night, bank on it. That leaves 8 minutes at SG.

At SF, unless we pick up another SF, DWright is going to get minutes at SF, and Reggie is a much better SF than Morrow is.

by Balance on Jul 12, 2010 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Most teams have 9 rotation players that can expect regular playing time. The remaining 3-6 players are typically young bucks or old vets. Here are the Warriors as it currently stands:

Starters
PG: Curry
SG: Monta
SF: DWright
PF: Lee
C: Biedrins

Primary reserves
G: Bell
G/F: Reggie
F/C: BWright
C: Gadzuric

Third string
F: Udoh
F: Radman

I think this is what Riley was looking at when he decided to let Morrow go. If we signed him, Nellie (if he’s coaching) would be tempted to play him over Gadzuric, or move Lee to center, or some other business that might be detrimental to the team defensively. Either that, or he’d be the 10th man, and you don’t wanna pay your 10th man $4M/year, unless maybe he’s an expiring deal (Radman).

I hope CJ is resigned and moved into that primary reserve G slot, pushing Bell down the depth chart. Fill that out with Tolliver, Hunter, or some other D-Leaguers that show themselves as viable and versatile.

All that said, I wanted Morrow retained as well, simply because $4M for the league’s best shooter seems like a steal. Either he’d make his way into the rotation due to injury or poor play by Reggie, or he’d be trade bait for some team that realized too late that they needed outside shooting.

by ivanbe on Jul 12, 2010 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Gaz is awful

If he’s in the lineup I’m worried, Bell is okay but not the greatest answer at the backup 2. And since were losing Udoh for half the year we will need extra deph.

This is my sig, what do I do with it?

by dubzfan on Jul 12, 2010 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Gadzuric is a decent rebounder and defender, poor offensive player. My point, though, is that signing Morrow doesn’t solve the backup C problem. If Morrow is put into the game instead of Gadzuric or the injured Udoh, that means Lee would be moving to C and Morrow comes in at SF, which would be a defensive disaster that would negate the benefit of having a 3-pt marksman on the court. We’ve already been down that road.

I predict that Reggie will be the 6th man, coming in to replace whichever guard or DWright comes out first. If Monta sits, Reggie would be the backup 2, not Bell; Bell would only come in if two out of three starting G/SFs sit.

We need depth insofar as we need players that are capable of playing a few minutes in a pinch. But you don’t need to pay those guys $4M/year.

by ivanbe on Jul 12, 2010 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Better than nothing

but I sincerely doubt the team uses it (at least in the near future) since they aren’t willing to use that same money on Morrow.

by dprodigy19 on Jul 12, 2010 1:29 PM PDT reply actions

I love Morrow but...

And watching his 37 point performance in his first start was so magical that I almost got teary eyed, BUT, he is so limited as a player and his development in other areas is so slow. He looks like the Statue of Liberty on defense, doesn’t move his feet and always swipes at the ball to commit the foul. For someone that supposedly has a lot of hops, he never dunks (okay, he dunked once) and is too reluctant to drive it to the hole. Once he gets the ball, if he doesnt have an open shot (and sometimes even when he has an open shot), he’s too tentative, dribbles around a bit and passes back out to someone else. Once he gets the ball, it’s either shoot, or waste 5 seconds. He is not proficient at creating on offense. He’s got horrible handles. He runs so slow he looks like he’s got the speed of someone 50-80 lbs heavier than he.

Obviously, his 3-point shooting and mid-range game are excellent, but the rest of his game has not developed fast enough yet. His strengths represent everything that the Warriors are good at (shooting, scoring) and his deficiencies represent everything that the Warriors are bad at (no defense, poor ball movement). I don’t think he’s worth $4m/yr.

We were the worst rebounding team with the worst rebounding differential. With Lee, we now have 2 of the best rebounders in the league. As far as defense goes, I think we are arguably the same (as in as bad) with Lee at the 4 instead of Maggs, Radman, Tolly, or any of our other 4’s. So we have improved there simply by getting more rebounds. We certainly haven’t lost anything on the offensive side (possibly getting better).

Hopefully D. Wright addresses our defensive issues on the wing.

We’ve been complaining this whole time about rebounding and defense and I feel like it’s really being addressed now.

by m3dynam on Jul 12, 2010 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions

The Warriors are not good enough to have Morrow in the lineup. Meaning the other players each have so many of their own shortcomings to overcome they cannot be expected to cover Anthony’s as well. He is going to struggle in Jersey too. The kid belongs in Miami. Stand in whichever corner has better eye candy and put up 30 a night on 15 shots. I respect that Riley is showing a clear vision for the roster that involves at least acknowledging the existence of the defensive end of the court, favoring bankable skills over pie in the sky projects, and recognizing the importance of having complementary players who all play different positions. Still, not resigning Morrow was a big mistake. You find a way to make it work with that kind of shooting talent. You build offensive sets around him. Flexibility is always supposed to be good, but honestly I kind of liked the idea that they were committing to a way forward. Clearly the Monta situation is far from resolved and his status is up in the air. I think not matching is as much about that, from a roster and financial standpoint, as it is about Morrow himself.

"He needs to figure out why he is having stomach problems and he's got to watch how LeBron (James), Kobe (Bryant) and D-Wade (Dwyane Wade) work. He needs to mimic that if he wants his teammates to speak volumes about him." -Keith Smart on Motna Ellis

are you sure?

read this thread first: http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2010/7/9/1561465/playoffs-very-likely-to-happen

cuz I really don’t want to start the statistical argument all over again. If you still want to talk after understanding where I stand on efficiency statistics, then ok

I'm not talking stats

Nor was 408, we’re talking if we’re done with roster moves and I believe there’s still more to come.

well i believe we're not done

because why would we give up a good value contract in monta ellis if he’s also good player for us? (that’s where the stats come in)

I don’t think there’s any “momentum” of trades. I think we’re pretty much done. Riley had a vision and he seems to have reached its summation.

i hope not. i hope we can convert our expiring contracts into Iggy and plug him in at SF and bump Dorell to coming off the bench.

I am interested to see what Riley does next

If anything, it has been….a busy offseason so far

I woulda loved Courtney Lee too

But he was the key piece in the Vince Carter trade. Highly doubt they would give Lee up for Morrow. Would probably laugh, then spit in Riley’s face.

PG Curry/Williams
SG Monta/Williams/Bell
SF DWright/Williams/VRad
PF Lee/Udoh/BWright
C Biedrins/Gadzurich

As of right now I have Reggie Williams being the primary reserve for PG, SG and SF. There should be at least one more big move in store for the Warriors fans this offseason. I would prefer that the Warriors trade BWright, VRad and Gadzurich for a decent back-up center and sign another small forward so Reggie can play PG and SG only. I really like Reggie Williams playing PG and SG over SF. He played really well at the end of last season at PG and was very smart with the ball.

Unless CJ gets a crazy offer

Riley basically said on KNBR he is getting him back. CJ will backup Curry, not Reggie

I agree...mostly

I think it will play out like this if our roster doesn’t dramatically change.

Williams will sub for Ellis or Curry. If he subs for Curry, Ellis will move to point or…Reggie can run.

Watson will be used in case of injury or cold shooting by any of the above.

Brandan should back up Lee and Udoh will back up Biedrins.

Hopefully, Gad and Vrad aren’t needed and we land bonafided SF and to start over D. Wright with our expiring money.

You mean D-League or undrafted guys whose hard work and perseverance earned them the right (and money) to play in the NBA? I count Morrow and Buike as the only ones of that group who’ve left, so I think you’re going a bit overboard with the hyperbole. But I liked them, too.

can't lose CJ now.

we should re-sign tolliver and hunter too. Unfortunately for them, it looks like we’re gonna drag out the signing process until we can sign them for the lowest price possible, but they’ll be good deals for us and provide the depth we need.

Goal: 8 seed!

by dso on Jul 12, 2010 2:59 PM PDT reply actions

i hope we sign CJ and Hunter. I could do without tolliver.

by Balance on Jul 12, 2010 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions

they're all flawed players

but it looks like we can sign them for dirt cheap, and if we can I say we get them all. Tollier had his faults; he was also awesome at times. Respective to the contract we appear we’re going to offer him, he’s worth it.

Goal: 8 seed!

by dso on Jul 12, 2010 3:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Tolliver & Hunter are both stopgaps

Neither belongs on a real NBA roster and were sadly the best options we had at the time. Now? It’d be sad to think they are the best options we have but it may be a reality.

Curry, Ellis, Wright, Lee, Biedrins
Bell, Williams, Radmanovic, Wright, Gadzuric
Udoh

That’s 11 guys. That’s our entire roster (once the Wright and Udoh signings go through). We need 4 more to fill out the roster.

Trust me, learning english isn’t a waste of time. It is actually sort of useful.

well, there's a huge difference

between starting them every day and having them as your third/fourth option off the bench. The former is kinda sad. The latter? Having players who have proven they can produce in the NBA and can be had for cheap? I think that’s a great option

Goal: 8 seed!

by dso on Jul 12, 2010 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the minimum roster is 12

You can have up to 15, but you don’t need to.

by m3dynam on Jul 12, 2010 5:18 PM PDT up reply actions

and man

morrow you’ll be missed, you were an awkward player with feet too big for you and no lateral quickness, but your shot was a thing of beauty and your interviews were hilarious. You seemed like a really cool guy; not the most intimidating guy, in fact, maybe one of the most harmless looking basketball players in the NBA, but also with one of the deadliest 3 point strokes. Hope you keep improving and you’re happy in NJ

Goal: 8 seed!

dang

I’m bummed.. I really liked Morrow. I’m glad he got some money, I just hoped he would go to a good team that just needed a sharpshooter, a team like Miami, San Antonio or one of them. Oh well, at least with the New York media, now he might get some recognition for having the best looking shooting stroke in the league..
