Voting Time: Should Nelson and Riley be retained?

There has been a lot of heated, and sometimes bitter debate on GSoM over the last few months for quite some, but I'd like to get a collective GSoM opinion on this through an actual poll. Should we retain Nelson and Riley when the new ownership comes in?

I recall a public opinion poll a few months ago on Nellie that was split down the middle, something like 51-49%. I'm interested in seeing whether this has changed, and what Warriors fans' views are on Larry Riley after his year as general manager.

GSoM's popularity appears to have some media pull. It might not be too big of a stretch to imagine that we may be heard, to some degree. It's time to vote and duke it out with well thought out arguments. Cohan is out and the new owner, whether it is Ellison or Lacob, is in. What should we do now?

For the sake of the poll, consider that if we were to replace either Nelson or Riley, we would replace them with an average coach or general manager, respectively. Should we extend them, replace one of them, or fire both of them? If we put an average coach in Nelson's place, would he do better than Nelson? If we put an average GM in Riley's place, would he do better?

Let the voting begin.

Fire Riley and keep Nellie but not as coach

Move him into the FO as an advisory scout type of guy

This is my sig, what do I do with it?

Pretty sure he wants to retire in Hawaii after this…

Yeah thats exactly what I was about to say.

Nelson is absolutely fantastic at finding great players. He got all those D league steals. He was great for Dallas as well. I completely trust Nelson when scouting players. I would fire Ellison for Kevin Pritchard a much better gm while he is still available. I guess I wouldn’t fire him, demote him to assistant gm.

Fire Ellison?

I’m not sure that would be a popular option. Heh heh…

I think...

…there’s a problem with how we attribute success and failure relative to Nelson vs. Mullin/Riley. By which I mean, did Nelson get those D-Leaguers, or did the GMs?

by Zack Vank on Jul 14, 2010 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions

it’s probably more Nellie giving those guys chances. it’s not like Barnes (philly & sac), Azubuike (Cavs & Rockets), Morrow (Heat) & CJ (Spurs & Bobcats) didn’t have chances with some good coaches (JVG, Pat Riley, Pop, etc)… other GMs saw the talent & invited them to camp, but Nellie’s the only coach that gave them a real chance.

its time

for us to move on and look to the future. We have a young team that needs to develop together and compete for years to come. We dont want to wait another year for the inevitable coaching change. Nellie has stated that if he coaches this year, it will be his last. He is 70, or nearing it, and does not have a future with his team. We should thank him for coming back and being an improvement to Monty, Muss etc. However, its time to move on. imo

by tom88gsw on Jul 15, 2010 5:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Curry + Lee very similar to Nash + Dirk in Dallas.....

Other than that, the whole make up of this team is fit perfectly to Nellie’s style.

Nellie stuck through the horrible tragedy that was last year, his reward?

Coach this season with this team. This is the most talented team we’ve had since the Run TMC days. Let Nellie do his thing. Cut him loose if it goes bad, but it won’t. I remember being so impressed with Nellie after we aquired Jack and Al.

Seriously, what coach can win a playoff series with this lineup?

Davis
Richardson
Barnes
Jackson
Harrington

As far as Larry Riley goes, he has done nothing but earn an A for his job as GM. Getting David Lee and Dorell Wright are great moves. Moving Maggette’s money, brilliant.
If he goes and gets a veteran backup PF/C, resigns CJ, and picks up Barnes, Mason Jr, or Bogans, he get’s an A+

Keep ’em both!!!

Biedrins

was the starting center that year. Also, Baron was playing like a top 5 player in the nba and jackson was playing out of his mind too. That was a more talented team than what we have now. I like our guys and very much look forward to the future, but i think that team could have been something had we kept them together. Lets remember we won 26 games and added D Lee and D Wright.

Nelly+Riley

All Nelly cares about is smoking weed on a beach with Willy Nelson, all Riley cares about is being a freak. Nelson FINALLY gave some slack to a rookie and it turned out great, but we need to start building for the FUTURE, not for the next season. Assuming we are able to hold onto Curry and he doesn’t decide he wants to go home to New York or meet up with other really good players somewhere better…he will start to be a star quality player (imo) within the next 3 years. Get a new coach and gm now, and KEEP them. Changing coaches all the time messes with growth.

As long as we fire ROWELL first and foremost, everything else can wait.

I see Ellison keeping both Riley and Nelson on for the entire season and then evaluate their performance in the next off season. After that, Nelson will be retiring and he can decide what to do with Riley and who he’ll bring in to replace Nelson and/or Riley. A new president can be acquired right after the purchase of the team, since there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Rowell’s days are numbered anyways.

Exactly

I am wondering why no one has mentioned Rowell. The little weasel that’s been in hiding. This is Cohan’s biggest failure as owner. Mullin was the one that brought back Don Nelson but Rowell was the one who extended him. But, now I feel the Warriors are in a place to make another run WITH Don Nelson. Just one more year.

I say we give them both the chance

This team is built for Nellie, and Riley did an excellent job this summer. If it isn’t going well, let them go mid season. That way we have appropriate transition time. Think about it. Who can we get to coach now? Who can we get at GM and what will they do?

I especially think Riley particularly has warranted the opportunity to see how team plays out for a couple months. He got an all star power forward, a good SF on the cheap (considering what other free agents got) ad drafted Curry.

by tafkasam on Jul 14, 2010 8:20 PM PDT reply actions

This team is built for Nellie? How do you figure?

This team is well-build for uptempo basketball, but there are lots of coaches who like uptempo basketball.

Beyond that, this team lacks 3-pt shooting at the 4, which Nellie likes. Actually, Nellie likes 2 non-ball-handling 3-pt shooters on the floor, which this team doesn’t have.

This team will be at its best running two legitimate big men out there. That’s not what Nellie’s done in quite some time. This team is NOT built for Nellie.

by Rated-R Superstar on Jul 14, 2010 9:36 PM PDT reply actions

Riley

has made some pretty good moves this off season. For once we’ve finally got some deals happening that make some slight senes. I think he’s more than earned a right to come back to be GM.

Nellie however….
Small ball is certainly fun to watch, but let’s be realistic. The Warriors will never have a deep playoff run with an undersized roster that gives no emphasis defense.

I like how the roster is finally looking more like the league norm size wise. With the new owner, I’d hope we move away from the small ball to an uptempo style that allows for fast breaks, but also is able to function out of the half court.

This being said, Nelson should be gone. We can put a more reasonable basketball philosophy in place while also ridding the team of a coach who causes rifts with his players. Remember Jamal Crawford and Al Harrington? I certainly don’t want to risk Nellie ruining DLee before we even get a chance to see how he meshes with the team.

by SnakesOnAPlane on Jul 14, 2010 11:42 PM PDT reply actions

My thing is

yes, Riley has had himself quite a solid offseason. However, Ellison will probably want his own guys and, if Pritchard is available, I say go for it. He has proven he can build a perennial playoff team. Its just an uprgrade. If Riley would take a demotion to assistant GM (though that would be hard for anyone to do) than I’d love having them together.

by tom88gsw on Jul 15, 2010 5:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Nellie clearly has to go — anybody who thinks otherwise has forgotten what an actual NBA coach looks like. Riley… eh. I voted to keep him, but upon further reflection, I probably wouldn’t. The Maggette dump was good, but the Lee trade undid that good and then some… while I’m not as down on Udoh as some, it certainly wasn’t a great pick. I like the Dorell Wright signing a lot, but one good signing doesn’t a good GM make. Dump ’em both.

You will find

a LOT of people disagree on your thoughts on the Lee trade. We would be sitting through a few more 20 something maybe low 30 win seasons before the move. You know how many teams have players full of “potential” that are the supposed future of the franchise? AR can turn into a very very good player. However, I do think we were overly optimistic (myself included) with him at first.

Fire both

I guess Riley has done alright in both his GM role and also in showing that he’s not just Nelson’s puppet. However, in the interests of a clean start, you really do have to clean house and get the old regime out.

Nellie brought us our only playoff appearance in the last 17 years, but I think it’s time to change the philosophy and play a more traditional style of basketball.

One thing to keep an eye on is the development of AR. Maybe he had his warts, but it was clear that he wasn’t a Nellie favorite, which made it easy to trade him despite all the potential. If Nellie gets fired this year, it could end up like the CWebb situation all over again. Nellie ran CWebb out of town, yet he fired the year after. What would W’s history look like if they fired Nellie and just kept CWebb?

lets look at the history here

lets see…off the top of my head

gave stephen jackson a ridiculous extension then traded him for raja bell and vladimir radmonovic?
let the core of our we believe team go, the one great season weve had in the past 16 years
gave corey maggette 50 million (he made our team worse) then traded him for charlie bell and dan gadzuric
they drafted Brandon Wright, Diogu, OBryant all with early picks…all busts
they traded belinelli for DEVEAN GEORGE
they traded J Rich for a huge trade exception and let it expire
let the best shooter in the league go
we have lost the most games over the past 10 years of any franchise except the clippers

and you wanna keep these guys?
cmon

david lee is not going to get us a championship and maybe not even the playoffs’
meanwhile we trade away randolph WHO IS 7 YEARS YOUNGER, give David Lee Lebron money until he is 33 and trade away our our 3 best defensive players (Buike, Turiaf, Randolph)
AND YOU WANNA KEEP THESE GUYS?
CMON NOW GUYS LETS BE A BIT SMARTER THAN THIS
