Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Fun: Compile your wishlist

Listening to Larry Riley speak mostly on KNBR, he's mentioned several times that he and his colleagues have ranked every player on every team in the league from 1 to the bottom. Within this list, they target ranked players who would be suitable to play on our team. Many of you have been throwing names out there like Rudy Fernandez and Shannon Brown, and all with good reason. Logically excluding players like LeBron James, I'm very curious to see your TOP 10 lists of guys who would fit well on the roster.

Keep in mind that there is little to be known about the intentions teams have behind the scenes concerning their rosters. It will be difficult to distinguish who is available on your list and who is not unless they are being publicly shopped as commodities. Ideally, your list would deal within these commodities exclusively, but in turn we would lose the diversity in opinion that would make this interesting in the first place.

1. Shane Battier - The greatest defender of our era. Represents exactly what this team needs.

2. Andrei Kirilenko - Mobile wing who passes well, can guard 3 positions, hits the elbow J, and helps weak side.

3. Luis Scola - A legitimate threat inside, rebounds well, tough, plays smart basketball, no ego, team player.

4. Brandon Bass - Still young, incredibly strong, great on the pick and pop with Steph, may still improve considerably.

5. Rudy Fernandez - Instant offense, high energy, handles well for his size, strong desire to be part of a team.

6.Anderson Varejao - Fills the void left by Turiaf and Udoh, can come in and spell AB or Lee's effort on the glass.

7. Glen Davis - Plays the pick n pop, soft hands, big body we can use, would collect many off rebounds in our offense.

8. Jared Jeffries - Very versatile defender, brings size to the team, underrated.

9. Shannon Brown - A young, polished backcourt player with potential, very dangerous in the open court, strong.

10. Anthony Johnson - Very tough, competitive, not the most skilled, but a tremendous practice player to push Curry and teach Lin the ropes and physicality of the league.

I think he’s PERFECT compliment to Curry and for our system

agreed

I would take Andre Iggy over any of those choices. It could happen – if sixers struggle and it is clear the Turner and AI are not the best duo – we might trade Monta and a future pick for AI

by tjmax on Jul 23, 2010 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I also like AK47 and Varejao if

we had both those guys on our team we would be set. I think if we could trade for Varejao that would be great, he would be excellent as both a backup center and pf. He could be a great 6th man… But can he run the floor well? I know I liked what I saw of him when he played against the Warriors last year.

Kirilenko has always been someone I have wanted the Warriors to pursue, I just love his defense.

I even like Battier I think he would do well in Golden State.

by brutusbrutus on Jul 24, 2010 4:07 AM PDT up reply actions

We would be "set", which means what exactly?

We would contend for the 8th seed? We would probably make the playoffs? We would compete for the championship (which is what being “set” really implies)?
I think if we had AK47 and Varejao we would be in competition for a playoff spot but I’m still not sure if we’d be good enough to get one.

by freerandolph on Jul 24, 2010 9:57 AM PDT up reply actions

We should be set

in terms of “the now”. I would personally be happy to make the playoffs this year. Of course, I’d like to see steady improvement, next year 6th seed, the year after division titles etc. etc.

I don’t think he meant set for the next 5-10 years. I’d be very happy with that roster coming into this year alone. Obviously once AK’s enormous contact is off the books, there’s a lot more directions we could take. Perhaps that detail should have been enough of a suggestion to indicate what he meant by being “set.”

by lilboots on Jul 24, 2010 7:41 PM PDT up reply actions

This is all hypothetical

“set” is a term that I used to describe a real competitive NBA team that could make the playoffs consistently. We’d really still be a dominant defensive center away from the 1 or 2 seed, but we could compete for sure, maybe the 4th or 5th seed.

They’ll dish off Iggy for expirings cos Turner can grow. This will mean Vladman & Bell for Iguodala. IMAGINE!

Biedrins | Boone(?)
Lee | Wright | Udoh
Iggy | Wright
Ellis | Reggie
Curry | Lin

Yes please, this will happen before trade deadline and we’ll make another amazing playoff run, then get BEAT LA!

Cool idea

I’m only going to use players available to trade for, so this doesn’t count players like Mike Miller. I’m also doing this assuming that we’re keeping our main 4 (Curry, Monta, Lee and Biedrins), so I’m not going to include players like Igoudala, whom we would have to give up one of our stars to get. not saying these are players we could actually trade for, just dont want to get into TOO many hypotheticals, so….

1) Shane Battier. As you said, greatest perimeter defender of this decade, as well as the most diverse defender (can guard 1-4, equally good on or off the ball). Selfless, does all the dirty work and intangibles, and is a SF, which is the only position we don’t have a solidified starter at.

2) Anderson Varejao. starter talent but used to coming off the bench. much needed energy boost. does what turiaf did, except that he rebounds as well. one of the best defenders in the league.

3) Shawn Marion. He’s had a falling out, and could probably be taken away pretty easily. Fantastic defender. great rebounder. very athletic. competant scorer who is more than happy not scoring. fits in as our 3 perfectly.

4) Shaq. I know, this is a really weird choice. But few teams have shown interest in shaq, and if that continues, he’s going to have to accept a role as a 6th man if he wants to continue in this league. I think he would make a great guy to split minutes with Biedrins. He’s still a very good rebounder (especially on the offensive end), defender, and gives us great size. He could take the grunt of the minutes when we play a team like the Magic or the Lakers, and Beans could take more when we play the Hawks or Blazers. Most importantly, Shaq would give us A) attitude, B) style and flair, C) leadership 4) experience winning. No one on our roster has anything close to a winning record for their careers.
plus, combined with beans, we’d have the greatest ft shooting center combination to ever play.

5) Marcin Gortat. decent defender and rebounder. bigger than biedrins. surprisingly good on offense. plays like he has something to prove.

6) Dahntay Jones. Great athleticism and defensive abilities. a little small to be our 3, but we could have him our 3 in a small ball line-up, or an SG of the bench. Reminds me of shannon brown, except that he’s better than Brown in every category (minus age and dunking).

7) Darko Milicic. I know, this is absolutely ridiculous, but hear me out. Darko has talent in him. He was drafted second in a deep draft for a reason (and don’t pull the “Kwame Brown” card on me…Kwame was drafted because he was huge and athletic. darko was drafted on his talent alone). For all his suckiness, the man has incredible footwork, and great outlet passes. I read an interview with him, and he wanted to go back to Europe because the teams he had played for in the NBA were mean and made the game less fun. As someone who struggled in HS bball when the coach would get too mad at me, I really think that if Darko gets a chance somewhere where he can play balls-to-the-walls basketball, he will erupt like Harrington, Monta and Azubuike did with Nelly. If we could make the game fun for Darko, I think he could be a 10, 5 and 3 6th man, and only go up from there.

8) Allen Iverson. Maybe it’s how late it is (it’s really not that late, actually). maybe it’s the fact that i’m sick. but for some reason, my list is getting really crazy. but again, hear me out. AI is getting no bites in FA. while he didn’t accept a 6th man role this year because he thought he was going to be a starter, he should know, if he chooses to join a team this year, that he will be coming off the bench. If he can accept that, he can obviously still contribute. what better way than to back up monta and curry with an explosive, fiery, balls-to-the-walls (sorry for using that expression twice in one post. tool!), fearless maniac? feel like going small ball? throw him in there WITH monta and curry. it would be fun. I strongly believe that every good teams needs to have 2 out of these 3 on their bench: energy guy, great defender, and capable of scoring 25 on any given night guy. the celtics had all 3 (davis, trick-or-treat tony, nate rob, respectively). if you give me a scorer like iverson, and an energy guy like varejao, i don’t care who else is on our bench.

9) Tony Allen. defense, can play SF, has a ring. enough said.

10) me. for obvious reasons. I probably wouldn’t contribute that much. but I would really love it if they signed me.

Another question is he had rep of being headcase in pheonix. Read “7 seconds of less” and you’ll see all the things d’antoni and co had to do to appease him. Always felt under appreciated and didn’t get spotlight and jealous of nash and amare.

by tafkasam on Jul 24, 2010 11:52 AM PDT up reply actions

I won’t deny that he’s a headcase.

the falling out was he had a four year span (02-06) in which he was an all-star every year, and averaged 19+ppg each season. the last four seasons he’s averaged 14.3 ppg twice, and 12 ppg twice. the rebounding, steals, and blocks numbers have lowered significantly as well.

by bradyk2 on Jul 31, 2010 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions

best case, and most likely scenario is

D Wright makes the need to pursue a lot of those names unnecessary. I’d love to see an up and coming player on another team come to the warriors to blossom – just to flip the script for a change.
If this happens, and Reggie is a serviceable backup to Monta at the 2 spot, we can get a cheaper three mid season (another buike from the D league?) and save our money trade exception to make a move for another big down the road

by tjmax on Jul 24, 2010 8:03 AM PDT reply actions

Without giving up on Beans, Monta or Udoh before playing 1 season with us....

Iggy, Verajao, Marion, Gortat, AK47, and Scola should be out of the equation for salary/age reasons. We need to make sure not to handcuff ourselves financially going into the 2011-2012 season because if we have a solid year this season we will be a desired destination come 2011 offseason.

Players that we should be considering to add depth now are as follows….
Chuck Hayes
Wilson Chandler
Corey Brewer
Ersan Ilyasova
JJ Hickson
Aaron Afflalo
Jordan Hill
Luc Mbah a Moute
Easch player in that group is under 4mill this upcoming season with only 1 or 2 years left on contracts and would provide useful/cheap bench help for this season.

A bit more expensive but still useful….
Marvin Williams
Birdman
Battier
J. Jeffries
B. Bass
M. Gortat
R. Sessions
This group is all over 4 mill next season and some have longer contracts but would be very useful if able to get as part of a Radman or Gadzuric trade.

Let me know if i missed any other legit options.

Nah

He’s only 31 years old. He’s a guy that’s in the mold of a Cliff Robinson. He’s not going to lose his game with age as much as most players do. He was never a freak athlete, and never imposed that kind of prowess on the game. He’s a guy who plays with his mind first. He’s been relatively healthy for his career and this will also help his longevity. I say he can be a productive player and top defender for another 4 years.

by bradyk2 on Jul 31, 2010 7:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Battier, Hayes, and Fernandez

I think trading Monta to Houston for Battier and Hayes, while trading a second round pick for Fernandez would be great. It allows us to get an experienced back up for Wright at the three and allows Rudy and Reggie to fight it out for the two spot. If there is any way to get Battier and Hayes without giving up Monta I would prefer that, I just couldn’t think of it because both Chuck Hayes and Shane Battier are expiring contracts. Also with Portland just signing Matthews we could probably get Rudy for a second round pick.

Predictably so

I think the thing about players like Varejao, Turiaf, R. Lopez, and Amundson is that they help your team win. While individually they don’t do things to “impress” you, they do the stuff other players hate to do or are incapable of doing on a nightly basis. So much so, that sometimes these kind of players end up earning 7mil a year. While I value your opinion about players, I sway towards popular opinion a bit more. I was hoping you would provide me with a brief analysis of exactly why you weren’t impressed, but I guess that was wishful thinking no my part.
