Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Grace Period Please!

Listening to our new team ownership on KNBR got me hyped.  We have a new owner!  He actually has a plan! He won't be content with winning 40 games and packing the arena!

However, I have seen numerous comments on various blogs whine and worry as if Cohan still was running the show.  Some fret over Lee, some for Pargo (inconsequential), and some for the loss of CJ and Morrow.

It is fine to be critical, but let's not talk about the warriors as doing the "same old thing" as the Cohan days.  This team has been bad for a long time, and heads will roll (some innocent ones too) because that is how rebuilding happens.  Like many, I am tired of rebuilding but I feel much better having new owners leading the effort.  Sure, they will make some mistakes along the way but hopefully these mill be minor. I suggest a moratorium on comments about the Warriors moves as being the "same old Warriors" moves because it suggests that the new ownership is the same as Cohan.

Give the new owners a chance, let's see who the new coach and GM is, let's see the starting lineup we have get to know each other, let's see if we make a splash mid season or in the next off season before we overreact to any moves they make at the moment (people tripping about pargo? really?)

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

It was a very good interview

I liked the part where he mentioned that he was in total agreement with the Lee trade.
He really sounds like a smart and knowledgeable owner, says he talks to Riley every day, all good signs. It is time to get a little excited about the direction and not worry about Lin, Pargo or any of the other guys. It will all get played our on the court anyway.

Definitely different.

How different is it to have ownership that can say “I have a ring, and I want one here?” He clearly knows how hot it can get here for an owner, and rather than backing out of the kitchen he’s saying “I’m here to cook”.

Potential is what you pitch when you have low current value.

"I believe"

I believe that we are on our way to a new change, a change for the better. Everything takes time and patience. People can’t expect for our franchise to become championship contenders; however, we are taking pretty good strides in that direction. First going into the playoffs, and once we’re situated there, we can set our eyes for the championship. Sounds good to everybody?

by Noobi on Jul 27, 2010 10:41 PM PDT reply actions

Why would you say that?

Last year from about the half way point or even before the Warriors were playing with 3 or 4 pickups from the D league. How many games did they play with the minimum of 8 players and even in those only 7 could play? The team was decimated with injuries to almost all the key players.
It is more remarkable that they even won as many games as they did.
Obviously injuries can play a part this year but if they are not decimated again it is certainly reasonable to expect them to win more than last year. Are they a playoff team, not likely, but that is more because they play in the West and not the East.

by Laoren on Jul 28, 2010 7:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes, that is correct

and I kind of remember they beat Dallas playing only 6 players. My point was that I thought they won more games than they should have.

Is jannero pargo a good reason to fawn all over them?

New ownership isn’t yet ownership. That one’s still on Cohan’s people.

Don’t you think they consult with lacob out of courtesy?

Lights please, lights please, turn off the lights.

by Skeptic con Urquell on Jul 28, 2010 9:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I have no idea what they do and how they’re making deals and decisions. I do know that while it’s likely that Lacob will be the new boss, there have been sales that have been rescinded. I don’t think that it’s the case that Lacob is completely calling the shots at this point. My best guess would be that there’s a “don’t do anything major without calling the boss-to-be” but signing Pargo at the vet min is unlikely to fit that bill.

by jae on Jul 29, 2010 9:15 AM PDT up reply actions

Marcus Thompson tweeted earlier this week that Lacob has been talking to Riley pretty much everyday, with Cohan’s permission.

Grace Period Please!

This is a fan forum. Haggling over the team’s tiniest decisions is what fan-atics do. Sins of past front offices aside, signing a player who sucks to a two-year contract is a dumb move. Sure, it’s trivial and inconsequential. Basketball is trivial and inconsequential.

If you really want a grace period, how ’bout taking some time off from the site?

There will be no extra point!

by Sleepy Freud on Jul 28, 2010 9:53 AM PDT reply actions

huh?

why the personal attack?
I am just suggesting that many people on this site have been so negative for so long (for good reason) that they don’t know how to just be happy and patient when things are getting better. Nitpicking seems to be a poor way to welcome the new era. As for Pargo – he is a good defensive player who has a good bball IQ and will be a voice of experience on our young team. Hopefully he plays only five minutes a game, with Lin playing 5-10 and Curry getting the rest of the minutes. Not a sexy move, but not a dumb one (like getting Iverson would have been) – just kind of ho-hum.
As for taking time from the site – my wife agrees with you. But like many of us here I am just too excited about the new direction to stay away and I love to hear any and all updates and usually enjoy people’s comments. Despite the debbie downers!

by tjmax on Jul 28, 2010 10:17 AM PDT up reply actions

why the personal attack?

Haha. Not a personal attack, just personal advice. An occasional break is a good thing for all GSoMers.

What you consider picking nits a lot of people would consider standard-issue sportstalk. The fact that you’re defending the move suggests you deem it worthy of discussion. And if you think it’s worth defending, don’t be surprised if others find it worth criticizing. (To me, no amount of “BBall IQ” justifies signing a declining 31 year-old 6-1 combo guard with a career TS% of .471).

Obviously, the new brass shouldn’t have to answer for sins of the old, but neither should they be given a pass simply because they’re new. Ideally, fans should assess each move on the merits.

Meantime, though the Pargo signing was likely approved by GuberLacob, it was still officially authored by the old regime. Presumably you don’t think the “grace period” need apply to Cohan / Rowell?

There will be no extra point!

by Sleepy Freud on Jul 28, 2010 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions

Matt Steinmetz CSN: I like the Pargo signing. I think the way he will help the Warriors most is his on the ball defense. That’s one thing he does well: keep guys in front of him. And that’s something the Warriors don’t really have. Offensively, Pargo is aggressive. Very aggressive. He’s a scorer more than a point guard. He’s going to have nights when he’s not very good but I think there will be nights when he really helps you win because he can score in bunches.

by KinderandGentler on Jul 28, 2010 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Haha. Is that you Stinkyfingers? (Banned again? What was it this time?)

I think there will be nights when he really helps you win because he can score in bunches.

With all due respect to Steinmetz, this is basically nonsense. I’m pretty sure he has no idea how, why, or if Pargo “bunches” his shots. I suspect Pargo, like every other shooter in the world, bunches them pretty randomly. In any case, how his shots happen to cluster is irrelevant in the face of a .429 TS%.

I’m not too worried about how aggressive he is, or how well he keeps his player in front of him, when he should never see meaningful NBA minutes.

There will be no extra point!

OK, whatevs. As long as you stay “kinder and gentler” I’ll cut you some slack.

The real Sleepy...

Is all-seeing and all-knowing. Maybe it’s the crutch of the mighty SBN back-end technology that’s dulled my powers of perception, but I must say you are as fast at identifying previously banned members as I am, and as far as I know you don’t have the luxury of the fun tool box I get to use.

Nothing gets by you around here.

For the record, I’m also hoping that KinderandGentler stays kinder and gentler.

Haha. I have to admit, one of the appealing things about one day joining the GSoM writing staff would be access to that “fun tool box.” But then, why do I need the tool box when I’ve got my “Thing 2” on the inside?… ;-)

As for my our friend Stinky … well, the “Kinder and Gentler” (part of Stinky’s sigline, IIRC) was kind of a giveaway. You don’t have to be the real Freud to see that human beings, as a general rule, like to be recognized. If I got banned here, I’d probably come back as “Thing 1” or “NoExtraPoint…” or “;-)” …

Part of what you say is true. At the same time,

there are a few posters that spew negative comments regardless of the news. They seem to thrive on being contrarians and ruffling feathers more than keeping it real.

by KinderandGentler on Jul 28, 2010 10:56 AM PDT up reply actions

The only thing that makes any sense to me

regarding Pargo and Bell is that they’re both past-their-prime good defenders with relatively poor (or downright poor) offense. Which means come training camp, the other guards go against tougher than average camp D, and have guys they can improve their confidence on defensively.

Anyone know if either Bell or Pargo has coaching aspirations?

Potential is what you pitch when you have low current value.

I want a grace period for Monta

I’m hoping he can return to his more efficient form, but the way this new owner is talking, he’s ready to ship out Monta today.

It saddens me how the entire We Believe team has been quickly and methodically dismantled. I want to give him a chance with a real team around him this year before trading him. He is extremely talented, and with improved decision making is an amazing weapon.

by Billy Frijoles on Jul 28, 2010 10:29 AM PDT reply actions

I heard the same interview but had a different opinion

He singled out Curry and Lee but then added that Monta and Biedrins were really good players.
He never suggested shipping either out. His point was that a team had to have 3 great players and Curry and Lee have that potential and he needs one more. The fact that he didn’t single out Monta was just his opinion that he is not that guy with the same growth potential has Curry and Lee. I didn’t hear that as a negative, just his opinion.

by Laoren on Jul 28, 2010 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions

If that's the case, makes total sense

That’s exactly what I would favor – a wait and see approach. With better teammates and a real PG in place, will Monta be more efficient of a player? If so, then we are pretty set at the guard position.

by Billy Frijoles on Jul 28, 2010 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

strange how we all hear something a little differently

My take was Curry and Lee are excellent complimentary pieces, I felt like I heard we needed 3 all stars, and had none currently. I took his Ellis comments as he was a great player who could play better, and Biedrins isn’t being given away but is not overvalued either.

I hear you.

It really does seem like there are a lot of people willing to rip comments out of context, or ignore even an attempt to understand what something means (see the luxury tax comment, or the debt complaints) in order to bitch about Lacob.

I was very impressed with his interview on KNBR as well as Chronicle live. The dude knows business and basketball. Already invested in the team as a fan before this opportunity, really wants it. One of my favorite quotes that gave me confidence aside from having an actual plan and making sure they are making the right moves and bringing in the right people before pulling the trigger on those decisions was the “I don’t want to come down on Cohan, but look. This is a team with one of the best fanbases in the league, and one of the biggest markets and for what they have had to go through the past 16 years? Only 2 winning seasons? You pretty much have to go out of your way to achieve that sort of mark. We want to first and foremost win and give these fans hope that they very much deserve” not word for word, but the general jist.

haha right? he of course followed up saying he just feels that Cohan just didn’t get the right people hired to get things done. I’m really stoked off this ownership group and can’t wait to see what comes of it over the coming years.
