Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

That is a distinct possibility depending on LeBron James’ decision tomorrow. Multiple sources told me the Warriors have an offer on the table that sends forward Anthony Randolph and other pieces to New York in a sign-and-trade deal for Lee.

If LeBron announces he is going to New York, in order to make room for his max contract, the Knicks would have to renounce Lee to free up the cap space. That would end the sign-and-trade possibility and the Warriors’ chances at Lee. But if LeBron doesn’t say the Knicks when he announces his decision …

Seems to be pretty big decision for the outgoing FO to make. Not sure I like this. On one hand, Randolph has much more potential than Lee, but on the other hand, there’s no guarantee he can reach it. At least with Lee, he’s proven. I’d love to see the new FO and coaching staff with this young core. I guess I’m 50:50 on this one.

Lee is better than Randolph now, and there’s no gurantee that Randolph will ever be on Lee’s level, and Monta’s overpaid. If we’re going to pay someone that much (probably 5 yrs/60 mil) why not have it be someone who helps a team win?

I think you watch too many highlights

Iguodala is an absolute shut down wing defender, something Monta will never be, and even by your own graph he scores more efficiently than Monta. He’s also a much better and much more willing passer.
Westbrook is similar to Iquodala. He kills opposing guards with his D and drops dimes, and he’s still on his rookie contract.
I don’t really like Rose too much, and he’s going to be horribly over paid on his next contract, so I’ll agree with you there.

You don't get this, do you?

There’s a limited number of possessions in a basketball game. On average, the Warriors (who play the most) played about 100.4 per game, so if Monta uses 25.8 (FGA + TOV is a quick shorthand for possessions used), and only gets 25.5 points. Is is any wonder that the Warriors offense played MUCH better when he wasn’t on the floor?

Monta Ellis's #1 Fan!!!

by philthiest on Jul 7, 2010 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions   2 recs

No, no wonder because he played retarded minutes and the 3 minutes he was off the floor, the opposing team was either getting blown out or were blowing us out.

by Montaytotherim on Jul 7, 2010 4:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Please re-read what I said.

Has nothing to do with on/off times (though that’s a real problem too…), it has to do with him taking waaaay too many shots, turning the ball over waaaay too many times, and not sharing the ball enough. Monta’s KILLED the Warriors last year. However, he scored a lot of points, so that means a lot of dumb front office people might still value him and we should trade him while his value is high.

The only part about this trade that I don't like is the money that is going to be involved.

Talent wise, I think it is very fair. AR could be great, but we don’t know if he will be and Lee is pretty good right now. He’d be a perfect compliment to our other lanky bigs and already has played in a similar system. I don’t like giving up AR but you got to give something up to get something back.

the cash though is a huge concern. I don’t know if I would want to commit that kind of money to Lee for 5 or 6 years when we don’t know if this is going to be a good team next year. This would really limit our flexibility going forward.

by won't stop on Jul 7, 2010 3:34 PM PDT reply actions

agree

Lee > Randolph right now. Randolph > Lee based on potential. But I would rather save on Randolph for the next two years than pay $10mill+ for Lee starting this year. We’ve already got Beans and Ellis on big time contracts (although those deals aren’t looking so bad now) and just got rid of Maggette’s. Why add another big one now? It’s not like Lee is the missing piece on this team.

by barrance on Jul 7, 2010 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Totally.

On the other side though, if this team is healthy, and Beans comes back to form and we can find someone to play the 3, then this all of the sudden becomes a very deep team with an incredibly dynamic back court and a guy who can rebound and score down low. Could be scary.

Lee is a worse defender...

…than Randolph, and at his current age it’s not impossible that Randolph could improve at that end. He has the body, length and athleticism for it. You already know what David Lee will be, and defensively it’s bottom of the barrel.

Something that also bears mentioning- if Don Nelson is still our coach next year, does anybody seriously believe Lee will play exclusively power forward? He’ll sop up minutes at center while every big man in the league leaps over his head.

Can...

…one be both a gritty player and an abysmal defender? Those two usually don’t mix. He’s a dominant rebounder, and that’s a phenomenal asset. His offense paired with Curry would be exhilarating as well, but he’s sooooo terrible on D. I’m a bit leery with giving up a combination of Randolph, Wright, and Turiaf or Azubuike just for David Lee. It weakens our 3 and 4 positions considerably and pretty much leaves us with no bench. This is clearly a “win now!” move with no guarantee that the final result will get us into the playoffs, much less contend for a championship.

But, it’s better than trading Randolph for Al Jefferson I suppose. If we can send them Monta and Vlad Rad instead of Wright and Buike, sign me up.

If Lee comes to GS, I’ll be shocked. Not a lot of players want to play for us, just putting it out there. I’m sure NJ knows they ain’t getting LeBron, so hopefully NJ signs Lee. It’s close to NY too.

LISTEN UP!

If any one can say they love randolph and wouldnt want him to leave, its me, But open up your damn eyes and see what in front of us right now, if the Knicks put this deal on the table, we take it. Look, Randolph is a very exceiting player, but thats about it..he hasnt done much, hes is too skinny, and i dont think he can hold it down as a starting PF. Im tired of watching the exceiting Warriors running up and down hittn three’s and still losing. i want to win, and i dont think randolph can do that for us, well he hasnt proved it yet. Now if we gave up Ellis, who would we have at SG? Morrow might not even re-sign, Azu is injured..so RW is gunna play SF…does that mean Bell would be our starting SG? If that was the case we would have 4 SF’s, now if we give up Randolph..as hard as it may be.. We now have 4 locked spots, Curry, Ellis, Lee, and Beans..who WILL be himself again, so what if he cant shot free throws. I hope we give up Radman with the deal..wouldnt mind Azu on top of it. Think about it, the Dubs wont be a team that all reportd talk shit about anymore..also it allows free agents to be more open to comming to play here, one of these free agents SF’s would be honored to have the starting role on our team.

Mmmm I wouldn’t say he’s as bad as Murphy. Lee is a very good player, just not on the defensive end. I’d be happy to have him as long as Curry or Randolph isn’t involved. But in this situation, Randolph is involved, so I’d pass on this trade.

by DubsFan408 on Jul 7, 2010 4:45 PM PDT up reply actions

this is tough

First off, Randolph is one of my favorite Warriors. He has huge potential, and when he wants to be,has been pretty special here. Injuries haven’t helped. With more weight/muscle and work on his post game, this guy could be scary soon. However, I would give him up for David Lee. I live in the New York area, and have a brother in law who is a die hard Knicks fan. David Lee is a beast. The guy runs the floor extremely well, has some range and has a uncanny knack for finding the ball.I personally witnessed him crush the Warriors a couple years back. Plus the guy never had a bad attitude and was a NY fan favorite. I always hoped we would be able to pick him up somehow… this is our chance.

Can anyone name me one thing AR does better than Lee?

And if you say defend, you haven’t watched AR defend enough…

Block shots is acceptable, but you’ll have to prove to me that 2 extra blocked shots per game is worth the better scoring and rebounding Lee brings.

The only other two things are he’s younger and cheaper. But, you will have to tell me what are the odds that Randolph reaches Lee’s level of production by the time we have to give him an extension.

I’m all ears to be talked into why this is a bad move, but I’m having a hard time seeing it just yet…

Career points/36 is slightly disengenuous

Or, at the very least, only telling half of the story. You left off two numbers:
FGA/36:
DL 11.3
AR 14.9

TS%
DL: .600
AR: .512
You can’t tell me that AR is a more efficient scorer than Lee.

by philthiest on Jul 7, 2010 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Werd, i forgot FG%'s which I left out as well as FGA's.

Efficiency, goes to Lee, there’s no arguing that. He takes 3.6 shots less and shoots roughly 9% better than AR. Digging deeper I also find that:

FT’s Taken/36:

AR: 5.3
DL: 3.9

PER:

AR: 18.71
DL: 22.28

Lee is ranked 14th in PER, while AR is ranked 40th. AR was the most efficient player on the Warriors last year. AR was also more apt at drawing fouls, thus the higher FT count as well as the drawn charges I mentioned earlier. Even with the efficiency taken into consideration, I still would not do the deal based on youth, salary, and the potential of AR.

"I tell him straight, 'If you're going to lead, you have to be the first to practice. You have to come in, get your work down and be prepared for practice,' " assistant coach Keith Smart said. A few more points

Per 36 numbers are great and all, but they’re dangerous with someone who has played as little as Randolph. Last year, Lee played nearly 1200 more minutes than Randolph has his entire career. Basically, we know that Lee’s numbers are indicative of his true talent. With Randolph, we’re just hoping.

Also, Lee has played 81 games each of the past three years, and his numbers last year were with him being the Knicks top option offensively. Randolph, in his two seasons, hasn’t played many games and has been wildly inconsistent in his scattered minutes. It’s not completely his fault that he’s playing time has been so sporadic (injuries, coaching, etc.), but that causes me to put much more faith in Lee’s numbers.

One more thing, here are BB-Ref’s Win Shares and Wage Of Wins’ Wins Produced per 48 over the past 3 years for Lee, 2 for Randolph.
Randolph:
WP/48
08/09: .172
09/10: .163
WS/48
08/09: .069
09/10: .098

Lee
WP/48
07/08 .307
08/09 .285
09/10 .275
WS/48
07/08 .151
08/09 .154
09/10 .163

By both of these, Lee has been an amazingly productive player (league avg. for all those is .100, by the way). The odds that Anthony Randolph is ever as productive as Lee is now are pretty slim, not to be too pessimistic.

However, I did somehow overlook that AR gets to the line more than Lee, and my original question was name one thing Randolph does better than Lee. So, you answered that. Kudos to you, sir.

Randolph’s career numbers vs Lee? Lee was still in college at randolph’s age and wasn’t nearly the rebounder he is now. Point being, he got way better. the fact that it’s remotely close in per36 should be very concerning especially wieghted with an additional 10million+.

EVEN WITH LEE THIS TEAM DOESN’T MAKE THE PLAYOFFS.

Think about it like this

Why would Lee pick to be s&t to us when we would have Wright and Udoh waiting in the wings? He could possibly go to New Jersey, who has a similar situation with Favors, but Lee would get way more playing time with the Nets because Favors is about to be 19 and has a long learning process he needs to go through, and Wright and Udoh are going to be 23 when the season starts. Also, Kris Humphries is the only other power forward on the Nets roster. And why in the world would LeBron now think he would have a chance to win a championship in the Cavs with the Heat and Bulls getting stacked up now? LeBron can’t carry the Cavs to the Finals with the team he has now, especially when Wade, who I think is right up there with LeBron, now has Bosh and who knows who else they’ll sign. The Bulls look like contenders now, and the Celtics and Magic are still going to be at the top of the East. Even Atlanta looks better than Cleveland with LeBron on the team. If he goes to the Knicks, they can sign Felton/Miller, Haywood, and trade for someone like Arenas. Felton/Arenas, Miller/Arenas, James, Stoudemire, Hawood, with Galinari off the bench looks a lot better than Williams, Parker, James, Jamison, Varejao, with Illgauskas off the bench. That Cavs team has proved that they can’t win it all. That Knicks team looks like it can stack up pretty well against the big dogs of the East and potentially the Lakers and the top dogs in the West.

I would regret losing Randolph's talent...

…but come on, how many times have you seen a guy with “unlimited potential” ever suddenly just get “it” if he hasn’t really even shown signs of it in his first couple years?

Maybe playing for D’Antoni will help Randolph, I dunno, I still love his potential, but if he hasn’t gotten it yet, I think I would much rather have Lee here for the next several years rather than wait for Randolph to blossom 3-4 years from now.

Come on guys, do you really want to see the Warriors just be mediocre for the next 3-4 years until Randolph develops, if he does at all? A David Lee would be great for us, he will do what we need (someone that will go after every rebound and make space in the lane). Sure, a pure post-player like Boozer would have been better, but Lee aint half bad.

by DubsDominate on Jul 7, 2010 5:25 PM PDT reply actions

We need to be patient with Randolph. Let him get another season or two before deciding to ship him out. Getting Lee would do what for us? 40 wins? 45? Not getting to the playoffs with that and definitely not winning a championship. In the short term gain of Lee vs long term of Randolph is worth the risk.

I repeat Lee will NOT get us to where we want to be. There is no guarantee Randolph will either but he has a chance at least to be special.

I really hope

we keep Randolph. The guys is only 20 yeras old and we are just gonna give on him? David Lee is a good player but he won’t get us to the playoffs. I would rather us develop our young guys and lose 60 games than have Lee and have 38 wins which is mediocre

I don't understand...

how can NY demand Randolph? They have no leverage in this. This is a terrible freaking trade. I hate it. There is no way Riley should be talked into giving up AR. Lee is a UFA and can bolt NY without the Knicks getting ANYTHING. How does this happen? Stupid, stupid, stupid. Can’t this front office leave already.

by JimBarnett2KevinGarnett on Jul 7, 2010 7:24 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

Great point

I think the problem is that it sounds like the Knicks have multiple offers. I do think 3 stupids to describe Riley is being kind. He has made one move that improved the talent of the team (drafting Curry), which a 6th grader could have handled once Minnesota screwed up. I just hope New Jersey gets tired of being on the sideline and makes an offer to Lee. The new front office should decide who the team invests a 6 year deal in.

what leverage do the Warriors have?

you’re right, Lee is unrestricted. The only reason he would agree to s&t with the Warriors is for the money.

by Evanz on Jul 7, 2010 8:41 PM PDT up reply actions

If this trade goes through, regardless of if it is a smart move, it is going to be incredibly frustrating. Hell, this rumor is right now. It is very upsetting that we have these players we keep picking (really just Wright and Randolph) that look promising and then cruel twists of fate keep them on the sidelines even though by now we really should have a good idea at the type of player they could be. I really just don’t like the idea of trading Randolph with him still being such a big unknown, I know it is what you have to do sometimes, but I (and a lot of other people I’ve seen comment these past two years) really felt Randolph was going to be something special. Udoh’s injury today was very frustrating too, it feels like things are falling apart (a bit).

I will say that if it is Azubuike or Turiaf, especially Turiaf, I will be extremely happy about this deal. I really don’t understand why Buike and Turiaf are considered as equal to Randolph, but that would be an incredible deal in my eyes.

by belilaugh on Jul 7, 2010 11:29 PM PDT reply actions

I’m ok with Lee for Randolph as long as it does not include Turiaf and/or Buke. Is it possible that they include Radman, Gadzuric and Bell instead then perhaps get Lee w/ Chandler? Otherwise, losing Turiaf and/or Buke will be a deal breaker. Those are two of our best defenders. How about Lee for Randolph and AB because I think Biedrins has regressed ever since his injury.
