The Golden State Warriors have agreed in principle to a sign-and-trade that would send Kelenna Azubuike, Anthony Randolph and Ronny Turiaf to the New York Knicks in exchange for David Lee.

EDIT: Marcus Thompson is reporting that David Lee is getting $13 million per year.

Okay, I’m just joking around, but I am for this trade. It’s bold and risky, but IMO worth the risk to get to a level of decency. We have too many young PF’s with “upside.” I think we can live with one leaving for one that is proven.

Are you blind?

Wright is nowhere near the physical freak that AR is. Also, his shoulder is a permanent debilitating injury. Now if we can just get Vlade Divac out of retirement we could have the least athletic front-court in NBA history! Yay!

Because

We are kinda stacked on young talent at the PF. Why did we draft a PF and are about to ink one to, what $15mil./year?, when we already had 2 with small contracts to develop. We need a SF, a different but just as talented SG, and a bigger badder C.
I’d love CP3 but we dont need to upgrade that position either. I’m not sure this makes us that much better of a team right now, and could make us a much WORSE team in 2-3 years. I hope Im wrong

We had duplicate 4’s. Many of us think BWright has more skill and would start over AR. With Udoh, Lee and BWright we have a very talented young front court. We gave up an undersiszed 3 with a bad knee, and under sized 5 witha big heart but very little game and a back up 4 that was a headcase. This is a big win for the W’s!

TO ALL THE REAL WARRIOR FANS

I’m sick and tired of hearing about how you want to keep AR. The only thing that this kid has proven is that he has potential. He has spurts of excellence, but shows longer spurts of stupidity and lack of fundamentals.

There’s a reason why the Warriors have made the playoffs once in the past 15 years. It’s because no solid basketball players want to come here. We now have one who WANTS to play here and you’re griping about giving up 3 role players??? Are you kidding me? Even if Lee doesn’t live up to his $13-15 mil/year, the fact that we are getting an all-star player is a great great thing.

I’ve been screaming for years that the W’s need to package a 3 for 1 trade to acquire a low post presence. We just got one of the best rebounding bigs in the game and you guys are crying about losing potential.

The dismissal of Maggette and Randolph is going to be one of the best “basketball” moves the W’s have done in recent history. Bringing in guys like Lee, Udoh, and Charlie Bell, all guys who play the game the right way, will make real Warrior fans appreciate good basketball. Not this up and down BS that they’ve been playing for the past 10 years.

If we could now get rid of Ellis + change for a solid SF, I would be very happy. I’d love to see a move for (in order) Granger, Iguodala, R. Jefferson or Battier. Players who focus on defense, but add a veteran presence.

Losing Turiaf is going to be hard for me. He is everything you would want in a teammate. He takes pride in defense, something we have lacked for a while. I’m hoping Udoh can replace that energy. Azubuike is fine with me. As much as I like his game, he’s coming off a major injury and with the emergence of Reggie Williams, we’ll be just fine there.

PG – Curry
SG – Ellis
SF – R. Williams/Morrow/ (basically, this pos. needs to be addressed)
PF – Lee
C – Biedrins

Bench – Wright, Morrow/Williams, Bell, Gadz, Udoh, CJ.

This team in my opinion is greatly improved with less of a bench. But that’s what I’ve been hoping for for a long time. The past few years, our 2nd team rivals the first on any given day. You know you need as many A players as possible and I think next year we might have 2 A’s and 1 B on our team. Curry, Lee, Monta respectively. Our last A was Baron, and he was an A- at best.

I think people will see very quickly that this is a great move for the Warriors.

by sauceycor on Jul 8, 2010 1:25 PM PDT reply actions

Its a fabulous move. We had two of the same player and maybe 3.

Lee gets the edge on productivity and fit with Curry, and if that all works out, the Warriors still look like a 40-win team to me. Lee also gets the edge for marketability, but I don’t include that category, even though I know the Warriors always do and geepers, Mookie Blaylock was so darn marketable he led them to the marketing playoffs.

Randolph gets the edge on age, salary and suitability to fit on an elite team… all three categories, to me, are the most important when you’re a bad team like the Warriors.

You don’t go for the basketball card. The one-time All-Star berth means nothing.

Again, I’m not saying Lee is a bad player. In fact, I like his hustle, he has pretty good hands, he works hard–fans will like that–and there’s a chance he gave up on defense just because the Knicks were so bad and that part of his game possibly can be revived.

But will all of that make a difference with this Warriors roster for years to come? I don’t think it will. Given Lee’s defensive lapses, it will be sameness.

Randolph is a big question mark. No doubt. He’s still more valuable than Lee right now and I don’t think it’s close.

If he gets hurt in NY right away, you can laugh at me. If he doesn’t stay long: Laugh at me.

I’ll still stick with Randolph over Lee. I would not object to signing Lee outright, for something around $60M, though I wouldn’t think it was the best thing possible for the Warriors.

It’s bad management of the cap and resources that has forced them to offer Randolph to get the right to pay Lee… which would be another instance of bad management of cap and resources.

In my analysis. Differing opinions are expected and welcome, but I might fire back, too, of course.

I’m in the same boat as TK. I wouldn’t mind Lee, but I’d rather keep AR.

Trade for Lee still not complete, but major hurdle out the way. Still waiting LeBron – http://bit.ly/d8oUKq via @AddToAny

This trade is terrible. Randolph will be putting up similar numbers to Lee in a year or two for a fraction of the cost.

what make Lee so great? He is a glorified garbage man!

If David Lee is garbage, what is Anthony Randolph?

The Ultimate Opportunist

by Rated-R Superstar on Jul 8, 2010 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Randolph still has the skills to be great in this league. David Lee has been maxed out already. His weakside defense is helpful as well.

has the skills...

AKA potential. WE DON’T CARE HOW MUCH POTENTIAL HE HAS IF HE’S NOT GOING TO PROVE US THAT HE’S ACTUALLY GOING TO BE DECENT.

sorry for the caps.

what makes AR so great

he’s a glorified shot blocker, who couldn’t get playing time on our crappy team.

by Number22Drew on Jul 8, 2010 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions

he might not be great now, but people are too quick to give up on this 20 year old. Fans have little patience and you will regret it.

by SuperStarAR on Jul 8, 2010 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions

He was in the dog house his rookie year and did play well at the end of the year after he learned what it took to get on the court. Last year he was shaky but started to get better before he had a season ending injury. I can’t believe people are talking about giving up on this kid after he’s only played about 70 games in his carreer.

by SuperStarAR on Jul 8, 2010 1:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Last year he was shaky but started to get better before he had a season ending injury.

So he ends his rookie year on a high note, dominates summer league, comes into training camp losing his starting spot to BW, and plays on the court like he is a rookie again. Then he gets injured as he finally begins to get more playing time.

Where again am I supposed to feel confident in AR again?

I’m just saying it’s reasonable to expect a player with his skill set to get better and the fact that he is only 20 makes me think he will grow a lot more than what David Lee is presently.

by SuperStarAR on Jul 8, 2010 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

That is where I am not so sure

It sucks he got injured for the year, but we are still left with a “what-the-hell-do-we-have” feeling with AR.

AR is either a boom or a bust in my mind, no in between, and I can’t make up my mind which way AR is leaning towards right now.

AR is either a boom or a bust in my mind, no in between, and I can’t make up my mind which way AR is leaning towards right now.

So if he is a boom, imagine Randolph and Curry at 25 and 26 repectively, those two could lead us not to just the 8th see, but deep runs into the playoffs. To me that is worth the risk. Curry and Lee won’t make it deeper than the 7th-8th seed tops. Also, by the time curry is in his prime, Lee will be 32, 33? I just don’t like this deal at all.

no i didn't

which is why i don’t think it’s a big deal giving up one of those guys

Completely ignores scoring efficiency

Completely. As in Lee has an above average TS% and Randolph has an atrocious TS% for a big man. Just because he takes a ton of crappy 20 foot jumpers and hits one every now and then does not make him remotely equivalent to Lee as a scorer. Sorry.

Trust me, learning english isn’t a waste of time. It is actually sort of useful.

The Warriors have no direction, no philosophy…or if they do it must be to strive for mediocrity.

We had a team of veterans in We Believe. We gave them up to start our youth movement, which I was for. Instead of letting our youth movement develop (aka be healthy because we had a ridiculously unlucky string of injuries last year), we are going to trade our second most promising young player and our younger, cheaper Maggette replacement?

It’s damn frustrating when we cannot commit to either a veteran team or a young team, and we keep living in the middle. And the depressing part about it is if we are only improving enough to be in the middle, then the past ~16 years of being the laughingstock of the league, save 2 of them, have been for nothing. And it just feels like we will be going through it again in the near future.

This feels like we are giving up, whether that is a justified feeling or not.

Finally some friggin’ rebounding. No more third and forth chances to score for the opposition.

Even without him we go from worst rebounding team to potentially top 10 @ rebounding. But just watching Paul George in summer league is making me wonder. He is pretty damn solid and i see alot of potential. Who knows though, summer league does plays tricks on you.
