Game Thread: FIBA 2010 Preliminary Round - Game 1 - Team USA vs Croatia
Welcome to the 2010 FIBA World Championship, hosted by Turkey. 24 nations will hoop it up over the next 2 weeks to see who will be awarded the Naismith Trophy. The 24 teams are divided into 4 groups, with Team USA in Group B. The tournament begins with the Preliminary Round where each team plays against the other teams of the same group, with the top 4 teams of each group qualifying to enter the Knockout Stage. So the Preliminary Round is sort of like a mini-regular season.
Two years ago, a star studded team including Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard, and Chris Paul recaptured glory for Team USA as they took the gold medal in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. This year, none of those players are back for Team USA 2010. Instead, we have the "B Team" which includes Kevin Durant, Chauncey Billups, Derrick Rose, and our own Stephen Curry. This team is lacking in front court size and big men, but hopefully the athleticism of our guards and forwards plus some hot Curry shooting will be enough to make up for it and take us to the trophy.
Here we go. 5 games in 6 days, with the first opponent from Group B, Croatia. Familiar names on Croatia: none.
Preliminary round lineup:

OMG replay!!!!!
I was paroozing my digital cable menu a few days ago and flipped out when I saw the first game was on ESPN classic. Do you have any idea what my cable bill is already?? I watch like 4-5 shows with any regularity, there are maybe 2-3 good, new movies a year on all of my premium movie channels combined, and they want me to pay extra for a channel that plays fuzzy old boxing matches and hockey games all day??

I can't believe
that this is even an issue. FIBA needs to hire some straight thinking people.
Curry gets benched.
lol. “Mr. Zone Buster” needs to make his shots.

i missed it
can you describe what happened?
by IQofaWarrior on Aug 28, 2010 9:23 AM PDT up reply actions
he gambled
was guarding a guy on the perimeter and then went to the free throw line which left his guy open.
on another play
his man blew past him and as a result the team’s defense got broken down because people were trying to step up on curry’s man.

haha
nah, i was looking for an alternate link for the guy who asked for one while Curry was on the floor, so I didn’t see his other defensive mistakes

Man, I really dislike their rotations.
I’m not sure why they insist on playing Odom at C.

i found the 2008 FIBA rules
and they have goal tending. It’s similar to ours
by IQofaWarrior on Aug 28, 2010 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions
Except....
…you’re allowed to take the ball off the rim.
by warriorsablaze on Aug 28, 2010 9:40 AM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, that's the difference
Goal tending occurs during a shot for a field goal when a player touches the ball
while it is completely above the level of the ring and:
• It is on its downward flight to the basket, or
• After it has hit the backboard.
The goal tending restrictions apply until:
• The ball no longer has the possibility of entering the basket during the shot.
• The ball has touched the ring.

I believe once it hits the rim you can hit the ball
The San Fransisco 49ers, where got Dix, VD and Crabs!

Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
Halftime
The athleticism of USA’s defense wore down Croatia that qtr, and made them work for many of their shots. It didn’t help Croatia that when they did have a shot, they couldn’t hit them.
It think it's funny how one commentator is criticizing the other commentator for talking about old school basketball.
“I think you just lost our younger viewers”.
and then later.
“Fran continues to talk about the 1970s…”
lol.

Looking at the FIBA scores of the day
Serbia 94, Angola 44 – wow, a 50 pt knockout
terrible USA fast break
didn’t know what they wanted to do
On the commercial break replay,
did they just show Curry making that pass, and then footage of Curry cheering from the bench???
Lol. I actually enjoyed it
Next best thing to watching the game I guess.

Omg, hahahaha
i thought i was commenting alone in here. I didn’t know I had silent observers. Anyway, I did it to test my understanding of the game and to use it as notes for anything interesting for my next open thread.
