Game Thread: FIBA 2010 Preliminary Round - Game 3 - Team USA vs Brazil
B Team? More like the A- team.
The speed and athleticism of Team USA was just amazing to watch earlier this morning. Their quickness closed down on open Slovenia players, cutting off would-be open shots before Slovenia could shoot them. Their athleticism collapsed all over the Slovenia players, which included some nice at-the-rim defense. Their quickness AND athleticism combined for some unstoppable fast break attacks from steals and in transition. I expect other teams to start employing the hack-a-fast-break just to slow down USA.
There are a couple of areas of concern. First, complaining to the refs. USA is spending too much time complaining and arguing with the refs. Second, that ugly 2nd qtr lull. USA lost their focus, got sloppy and careless, and gave up a bunch of turnovers. When the Knockout Round comes in the one-and-done format, there'll be no time for arguing or sloppiness.
Anyway, on to the next game. The word is that these 1st 3 games are the top opponents of Group B, and so far, USA has dismantled 2 of them. Brazil is next on their list. After that, a well earned relaxing day off. Unless we lose to Brazil. Then a well deserved video-tape watching day off.
Familiar names on Brazil: Leandro Barbosa, Anderson Varejao, Tiago Splitter

I'm brasilian and...
…we’ll crush USA 139 × 81 easily with a 40pts-20rebs-15ast—12stls-10blks performance by Leandrinho (Leandro Barbosa).
LOL :-)
Just kidding…. too bad Nenê won’t play for us. And too bad Marcelo Machado WILL play for us, he’s a John Stark’s type of player, ofter going 2-12 on 3pts and very occasionally goign 10-12 on threes…
Alex Garcia is a good player to watch, very very very athletic (played in NBA for the Hornets for 2/3 seasons until tearing his ACL). Marcus Vinicius also played for the Hornets sparingly ~2years ago….
But overall the brasilian team is not good. It’s above average on defense but terrible on offense – does anyone watched the games against Iran and Tunisia? Ouch, terrible terrible offensive setups and plays…
I don’t think we’re able to beat Croatia or Slovenia either.

Good luck!
I haven’t watched any of Brazil’s games yet. Barbosa’s speed will get put to the test since Team USA is one of the most athletic teams in the tournament right now.

crap!
Just when I thought the Spurs days are done – Tiago Splitter play makes me think they might still be a good team for while. One more team dubs trying to catch up with.
Splitter
Yeah, I watched him play before…the guy is a BEAST
he may be the Duncan to….Duncan?…Robinson?
Just remembering when Duncan came in and got to play next to Robinson for his last year

if he gets any minutes. this one is perfect for him to shine

We'll miss you Frown-Face Randolph. "You came, you cried, you almost conquered."
USA's offense isn't "dynamic" enough
Not that many plays, lots of one on ones
Yeah,
Kinda like street ball… Gonna be hard for the US to play against these teams who have played together and have set plays.
We'll miss you Frown-Face Randolph. "You came, you cried, you almost conquered."
argh
AGAIN, nice USA steal, dumb pass to give the ball back
BRA 40 USA 38 2nd 2:45

We'll miss you Frown-Face Randolph. "You came, you cried, you almost conquered."
You’d have to, I think. Healthier, better rebounder for his position, more versatile…

USA has NO team cohesion!
We'll miss you Frown-Face Randolph. "You came, you cried, you almost conquered."
Durant looking not in full control of that final fast break
i can’t believe we’re only down 3. I feel like we should be down way more

barbosa rescuing that possession for Brazil. Brazil execution and finding the open man continues to impress

Have you guys ever seen old school basketball footage
Where they have a camera focused on the shot clock and game clock, and then they splice in the 2nd camera view in the bottom corner? Why can’t ESPN do that since they can’t fix their clock display problems?
That's soooooooo last decade

more intense to watch because of fewer commercials
anyone else have an issue with Varejo?

yeah, that must be it!
We'll miss you Frown-Face Randolph. "You came, you cried, you almost conquered."
Rule difference: You can only call a timeout on a dead ball
you can’t rebound and call a timeout
Thats pretty cool
This style of play is more like college than NBA, it seems like.

He's chucking!
Like the commentators are saying, too much one pass then quick shot possessions.

I play coaching on this one
Offense is far too one dimensional – too much one on one ball. Curry needs to play more to offset Brazil’s threes
Yeah, but I can only assume they feel Curry's defense isn't good enough to put him in

neither side playing much defense
only real defense has been on bad turnovers and steals – curry can do both!
Been lots of screens to run through though
Curry cant quite run through them well yet

to see Curry play great, learn the game more, improve all around and we come in, say fourth place at the end of the tourney
OR
Curry continue to suck and stay on the bench and we get gold?
What's option 3?
Curry sits on the bench while Team USA plays sloppy sloppy sloppy?

brazil missed the first FT!
they can’t tie it!
technically, they COULD
they went for the intentional missed FT, they got the rebound, they kicked it inside, they missed a defended close shot, buzzer, end game

The San Fransisco 49ers, where we got Dix, VD and Crabs!
US got lucky
Thank you to the Brazilian lady in the off white blouse in the stands they kept putting on tv – you were the best part of the game.
Curry sat on the end of the bench, not even watching end of the game, looked dejected.
she was hot
maybe she was Tiago’s lady – she was getting awful animated when he was playing. Lucky guy for many reasons
Well, hopefully this is a wake up call for Team USA
Billups needs to be smarter, for every tough shot he made, seems like he had an equally dumb shot.

Damn close game
"The No. 1 thing (fans need to know): we’re going to do our damnedest to bring the Warriors to respectability on the basketball court." - Joe Lacob
well, it was better than what I initially tought
Good to see Marcelo Huertas getting mature and accepting the challenge against the much better, quicker and stronger USA backcourt.
That block by Igodala on Marcus Vinicius on the rim was pathetic, he was afraid to get blocked as soon as he received the ball, going to the basket…. this is his main problem: he get intimated too easily and is a weak finisher, despite an excellent body at 6’8"/235lbs and above average leaping ability. Also, he falls in love too much with the 3pt shot (actually he was 4/5 on threes yesterday), he could be a Tracy McGrady-type of player if he only could improve his confidence…
Also, JP Batista (that fat, lazy 6’9" center) is a total waste of another excellent body + skills. He’s too sleepy, too lazy to get better. Still he gets excellent positions for rebounds, set picks with authority, rolls pretty well to the basket and has very consistent a mid range jumper. But he just gives up too early, like to tip the ball on the off boards (when he could easily pull it down and go for a dunk – 2 times yesterday).
Brasil should have explored more Tiago Splitter inside. Anderson Varejão is a joke, he does not excell in anything but in flops, he can’t have a play set for him beucase he has no moves around de basket, no jumpshot, no offensive game at all. All he does is to fight for the ball, dive for loose ones, takes charge and box out for def rebounds.
Nenê was much more missed than Varejão. We could have used him to toss around Odom + Love. Also, Spittler benefits a lot when Nenê is on the court, their 1-2 game (high/low post) is quite efficient.
All in all it was a good game, USA played waaaaaaayyyyyyy too much one on one, that team needs some serious offensive sets, otherwise they won’t be able to beat the kinds of Spain and Argentina.
Cheers,
=Gaucho=
