Choosing a Coach the Rasputin Way - The Reveal

EDIT:  With 115 votes cast, the fans have spoken. Half of those responding prefer Brian Shaw, about 20% Brown, and 30% vote for business as usual. Almost 80% prefer someone other than Nellie immediately. And for the record, everything negative said about Brown has a solid measure of truth to it. Ronaldinho mentioned on another thread that an established coach always has baggage, and he was right.

I personally prefer Shaw, and have said so before. The comments around that statement were enough that some might believe a majority of GSoM fans were in favor of retaining Nellie or going with Smart. Others expressed the wish for a coach with a "winning history". But given the opportunity to vote for Shaw, with no fanfare or hoopla, half of you did. Case closed.

And that, boys and girls, is the Rasputin way. You can hardly blame them for trying to kill me, can you?

Look into my eyes, and let me tell you how to find the coach of your dreams..... I know a little about dynasties, yes? Also used vinyl, but that's another commodity. Right now these Warriors need a coach - follow below the jump... if you dare.

What makes a good coach? Winning, and winning more often than you should based on strength of roster. That's it, really - Ideally, you would want a coach with a consistent record over .600 who consistently beats the Pythagorean won-lost for his roster. He should be "young" - for successful head coaches, 40 is young. He should be able to successfully manage a superstar. If he doesn't meet these criteria, you're probably better off with a promising assistant.

Nellie is not a great coach. Over the past decade, he hasn't even been a good coach, falling below the Pythagorean for his teams far more often than not, even in Dallas. Far from having a "good chance" of leading the team to the playoffs, he has a better chance of keeping a playoff-potential team out. Based on that, a brand new coach with average skills has a better chance. Really.

But wait - we don't need to go the brand new coach route, although it's better than Nellie or Smart. As it happens, there is a coach around 40 with a career win % over .600, who also exceeds his team's Pythagorean consistently. It's possible he might come with a GM suitable to be a team president, even, should our new ownership want to keep Larry Riley. What's even better, he's recently gotten a raw deal, and should be burning to prove just that. He's got a lot more playoff experience than anyone else we can find, and there's no need to negotiate or get permission from another team.  And he can handle superstars.

Ladies and Gentlemen, your new Head Coach: Mike Brown.
