10-11: Player & Team Analysis
So this off-season has probably been the most exciting off-season since 2005. For those that don't remember that was the off-season after the year we made a trade for Baron Davis, the former face of the franchise. But this one has been totally different. Cohan is gone! We now have owners that have a winning mentality and want nothing else but to win. I am going to break down the predictions for each player that is currently signed, some of the staff members, and players we should consider going after through either trade or free agency. Here goes:
(CENTERS)
(They're joking about his 16% free throw shooting!)
Andris Biedrins (6'11, 240LBS)- This has been a different off-season for Andris. For one thing he's coming off an injury plagued year where he just plain awful. We've had underachievers on this team that played better for him. And even though in the interview this off-season he quite honest, it kind of didn't help his reputation as he seemed like a bit of a cry baby as well as a player that's just happy to be paid and doesn't care anymore about getting better as a player. I don't see him getting traded anytime soon as I doubt anybody would give up an above average big man in order to get him. If he can get back to his early 08-09 form where in the beginning of the season he was averaging 15 PPG & 12 RPG that would be superb. With the West becoming dramatic weaker in terms of consistent centers, he might also get All-Star consideration though that is a reach.
Dan Gadzuric (6'11, 240LBS)- He said the right things when acquired from the Bucks but regardless of that I don't plan to see him on the court unless we are either up or down 20 points. He would be a nice mentor to our youngsters BUT he can do that from the sideline.
Ekpe Udoh (6'10, 240LBS)- Even though he is considered a power forward, due to his size and length he will see some time on the floor at that position once he comes back from his hand injury. I don't expect much from him scoring wise unless it's on put-backs or anything like that, I think as long as he hustles, plays solid defense, and helps us in the rebounding department he will receive guaranteed time on the floor.
(POWER FORWARDS)
(Imagine the benefits of both of them playing for Team USA?)
David Lee (6'9, 250LBS)- Playing for Team USA would've gave him even more exposure but I do see him making the All-Star team again if he keeps statistics similar to those he had last year and as long as this team plays .500 ball. I see the game being much easier this year for him as this will be his first time in his NBA career playing with a TRUE point guard (we will get to him later). This will also be the Warriors' first time in forever playing with a 20-10 big man so the crowd will be surprised when they see this under the radar player (He played for the Knicks LOL) in action on a nightly basis.
Brandan Wright (6'10, 228LBS)- This kid just needs to play in nearly every game. That's the bottom line. This is a big year for him as he has added much needed weight and just needs to prove that his young body (he's still 22) can handle the beatdown of a NBA season. If he can average nearly a double double off the bench, something similar to 9+ PPG & 6+ RPG, than he can possibly be the Paul Millsap of our team. In today's generations of NBA Basketball, most playoff teams have that one big man (I.E. Lamar Odom, Marcin Gortat, Sergio Ibaka, Birdman Anderson, Dejuan Blair, Glen Davis) they can use off the bench on a nightly basis and Brandan Wright has the potential to be that player, maybe more.
(SMALL FORWARDS)
(D. Wright for the game-clinching defensive play?)
Dorell Wright (6'9, 210LBS)- He's had problems with being consistent in the past & last year he had a few off the court woes that had to be dealt with but I think he's ready to put all that behind him; He's closer to home and he's excited to be here. This guy will be counted on night in and night out to contain our opponent's best perimeter player. I hope this guy can turn into our point forward version of Gerald Wallace or a poor man's Tracy McGrady. He will see extended minutes and I hope he does well. I've been a fan of his game since that 06-07 season when Dwyane Wade said he was underrated especially as a playmaker (When D-Wade compliments you then you know you're doing something right). This is our "Most Improved Player" right here.
Only small forward....Hmm?
(SHOOTING GUARDS)
(Hopefully they can clap their way to the 2011 Playoffs!)
Monta Ellis (6'3, 180LBS)- All I'ma say is I don't want this guy gone unless we are getting somebody back in return that will improve this team's entire aspect (Only for Andre Iguodala or Carmelo Anthony). I actually see Monta Ellis going back to his old 07-08 form with a much improved three point shot which will help this team. I also see him averaging about 18-21 PPG and 4-6 APG on much better efficiency. If Monta happens to achieve this I do not see him getting traded this season but possibly down the line in hopes of improving for the team.
Reggie Williams (6'4 or 6'5, 210LBS)- This is another year for him where he will be on the radar. This is our 6th Man Of The Year here regardless. He's already became a favorite around the league due to his work ethic which can do nothing but help. If he has worked on his defense the way he talked about it during Summer League, alot of teams will be after him like crazy come next off-season. There might be some teams willing to overpay for him as well. As long as he stays away from playing ANY of the frontcourt positions, which include small forward, he will do fine this year (Rookie-Sophomore Game anyone?!?!?!).
(POINT GUARDS)
(Steph telling Kobe he will dethrone the Lakers in 2011!)
Stephen Curry (6'3, 185+ LBS)- I don't care what anybody has to see, he's nearly as untouchable as Dwight is to the Magic. This kid has gotten better game after game, play after play and the sky is the limit for him. People do not realize that he is only 22 along with the other guards on Team USA that seems to get more recognition (Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, & Eric Gordon) which means he still has upside. People think just because he's not as athletic or because he's much more polished that he cannot improve as greatly...WRONG. You can't put a limit on hard work and a strong work ethic so as long as he works as hard as he has this summer he will one day sooner rather than later become an elite player. I don't know if he will make the All-Star team this year as the West is stacked with great guards but he will improve dramatic. Stats long the lines of 20 PPG, 4 RPG, 7-8 APG, 2 SPG, & 2.5 TO will be a nice line for a second year point guard.
Jeremy Lin (6'3, 200LBS)- He will be a fan favorite from DAY ONE. He will get much more love than that of Marco Belinelli and that was a lot of love to go around. I see him being an eye opener in this league as a lot of people will regret passing him up (along with Sherron Collins but I'm not going there). I see Jeremy being a slasher version of C.J. Watson which is something that will energize this team on both ends of the floor. Like in previous posts, I actually see Jeremy being invited to the Rookie-Sophomore game during All-Star Weekend as not only a publicity stunt but because he might actually earn it. He will be another guy on this team that will be hungry and will have to earn every minute of his playing time.
Charlie Bell (6'3, 203LBS)- I will pretty much say his info will be just about the same as Dan Gadzuric except he will most likely get more PT as him and Jeremy will share the backup point guard minutes.
For those wondering about Jannero Pargo check the link below; it will explain that he's not a "done deal".
(STAFF)
(That smile looks sinister!)
Don Nelson- I thank him for "We Believe" and all of it's memories but those memories shouldn't be memories as they should be concurring. On that note, I say let the man finish out his contract and then hopefully go after Brian Shaw next year. The guy is respected by majority of the league and I think it would be morally right to end his tenure with the squad the right way. I wouldn't mind him being a scout or anything I just don't want him at the helm of the bench in 2011-2012. I say the only way we let him go is if and only if this team is playing terrible basketball WITH a healthy squad.
Keith Smart & the rest of the assistants- I think they should just sit back and enjoy. Depending on whoever the coach may be in the future they might want to bring in their own staff so like Don Nelson they should just enjoy the moment and finish out their time.
Larry Riley- As long as Steph doesn't get traded I am very pleased with this off-season. This off-season has been a success as we picked up a proven big man (David Lee), a defensive minded wing (Dorell Wright), a defensive minded rookie (Ekpe Udoh), and an instant fan favorite that will make us all believers (Jeremy Lin).
Robert Rowell- I have mixed feelings on this dude. I say let him stick around in terms of promoting/marketing the team but everything else in terms of basketball I have to say no to! I mean, he's doing something for us to be a constantly losing team as of late yet we seem to always have a full house when at the Roaracle. But like I said, my feelings are still mixed & confused.
(PLAYERS TO GO AFTER...)
(I don't even know what's going on here!)
BIG MEN- Louis Amundson (Free Agency), Josh Boone (Free Agency), Chris Hunter (Free Agency), Kyrylo Fesenko (Restricted Free Agency)
(Defense wins championships...Enough Said?!?!)
WINGS- Rodney Carney (Free Agency), Andre Iguodala (Sixers), Jamario Moon (Cavaliers), Anthony Parker (Cavaliers), Xavier Henry (Grizzlies?), Jarvis Hayes (Free Agency), Earl Watson (Free Agency), Carmelo Anthony (Nuggets)

It was pretty correct
but I do not want to sign back Nelson even as a coach. The reason is because he is really bad at producing rookies and so what if he sucks at scouting rookies (just saying) but besides that everything is correct. GO WARRIORS!

I would want him to be around as a talent consultant but not help with the development...
I just want him to point out which players can sneak under the radar through drafts, trades, and that free agency drama. I mean, he pretty much robbed the Bucks of Dirk Nowitzki and he saved Steve Nash’s NBA career. And let’s not forget what he did with the 30th pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. I want him behind a desk evaluating and not on the court anywhere near the players we have.
LOL! I love how you forgot Vlad Rad...its like he's not even on the team anymore...
"Warrior Pride Till The Day I Die"
But he is on the team and he's gonna get playing time, just like he did last year when he was healthy

Honestly, the only value VladRad has is as a shooter (something Nellie likes), but given the way he shot last year…..there’s no way Nellie plays him unless he gets his stroke back.

Yep, as one of the non-active members of the roster……

Unless he plays decent defense,
or at least make opponents watch for his shot, I don’t see him stepping on the floor at all. I rather make a HUGE stretch and put BWright at the three.
1) Not even Nelson is crazy enough to play VladRad at the 3, or B.Wright for that matter. I think it’s much more likely we see three gaurds on the floor, if anything.
2) Where’s this Rodney Carney acquisition I keep hearing about?? That would end this debate.

I vote team chemistry as well as other.
The other being NO INJURIES.

Thats optimistic of you
Even if the team chemistry is great, I don’t think we’re a playoff team next year with the players we have now. I don’t think we’ll make the playoffs unless their is a combination of B Wright breaking out, Monta getting more efficient, Andris returning to form, and other teams getting injured. Either that or the blockbuster trade option. Otherwise I don’t forsee us making the playoffs regardless of what team chemistry is like.
True, it maybe optimistic but not too farfetched IMO.
I should’ve added other variables. On top of Monta getting more efficient and Goose returning to form like you mentioned, Curry needs to continue to develop, Monta needs to revert back to the 07-08 off-ball mentality, and solid bench play. Now that’s a lot to ask for, but not out of reach.
I’m really just looking forward to a mostly injury free season and see what our squad can do together for a full season.

by WarriorForLife on Sep 1, 2010 7:54 PM PDT up reply actions
I think Andris returning to form is a very good bet, other teams WILL get injured (I have no idea who’s going to get injured, just that it will happen to someone), Monta will get more efficient simply because he has nowhere to go but up (though I have no idea how much more efficient he’ll get), and I think Wright has actual skills, he just needs to stay healthy to show them. So as long as we’re healthy, I think those things are pretty good bets. Maybe not quite enough to make the playoffs, but with health, definitely enough to put us squarely in the race until the end of the season.
by Missing Barry on Sep 2, 2010 7:59 AM PDT up reply actions
Oh, and I don’t really buy “chemistry” all that much. If you know how to play basketball, you know how to play basketball, changing your teammates doesn’t change how smart of a player a guy is. “Fit” can be important, though.
by Missing Barry on Sep 2, 2010 8:00 AM PDT up reply actions
Agreed.
And everybody has to be on the same page. Not everybody can be a first option on their team which is why the Lakers fell off towards the end of the Shaq era as everybody wanted to be the go-to guy. If this play fundamentally sound basketball and work as a team, chemistry will not be an issue. But to build chemistry you must be healthy so that everybody can play together so injuries is foremost the most important thing. I have a feeling the teams to fall off for us to sneak in will be DEN, PHX, & possibly even SAS (they will steal make the playoffs but as a low seed again).
I hate to beat a dead horse, but the biggest issue issue for the Warriors right now is front-court depth. If they can find someone to be effective playing center behind Beans, and the various aforementioned variables go our way, then I can get behind a possible playoff berth. Otherwise, I envision a combination of Lee, B.Wright, Udoh (eventually), and Gadzuric being mismatched on defense all season long, and when you plan on playing three guards for significant minutes together, that is a huge problem.

Most interested in Lee..
Too see if his numbers will translate into wins. Same with Ellis.
Dorell seems like an interesting player ..
I don’t know what to think of this squad..
PFortyy :)
'11 Champs!
Lee will not be getting as many isolations,
as his points will come off pick and rolls, moving without the ball, & off rebounds. This team has too many options that nobody has to be the go to option. If Monta can go back to playing like the Ellis of old this team will no longer have and blackholes and the offense will flow beautifully.
That picture of Nelson and Mully exiting the tunnel....
looks odd. Is it me or do the fans/kids look creepy? Add the smiles on Nelson and Mully and this pic creeps me out..lol
The fan on the right waiting for an autograph
looks like a grown man in a wig trying to impersonate a kid…..sheesh!!
just 1 important thing
your post looked great.
except for brian shaw……are u kidding?
worst coaching decision ever.
Well as of right now...
Who else can we go after besides Eric Spoelstra IF he gets the boot from MIA?
I just picked Shaw because he will gain automatic respect and he’s been learning from one of the better coaches in the NBA. What else can you ask for?
Im surprised their is no recs
Oh well… Nice job iHype you got a rec from me!!
Fear is the Mind Killer
seems a bit optimistic to me
I like the direction the W’s are headed and the new pickups make sense but think its going to be a transition year and some as yet unsolved problems.
Udoh is already hurt and not expected to be full speed for sometime. If BWright has a bad season or similar injury I suspect he will be out of the league. Supposedly he looked rusty in summer league and W’s have other players pulling for his time.
Biedrins bad season actually started with him getting kicked of the Latvian national team and how often do small countries kick NBA 7-footers off their team? His head doesn’t seem in the game, cmon 18% on FTs. We need this guy as he is a rare center who can run and an efficient rebounder but I doubt his trade value is that high now.
Awesome set of pics BTW and good post!
Yeah I agree with you on BWright & Biedrins...
but we all know some team that needs depth or still sees potential in BWright will pick him up next year even if he only plays about 40-50 games. It’s happen to somebody in nearly every draft like Darko Milicic or Shelden Williams.
And Biedrins seems like he doesn’t know how to let things go and let’s it destroys his confidence. If that’s the case we’ve most likely seen his basketball and he needs to be gone as soon as possible, but I do not see that happening as I do not see any team giving up a solid Big Man to take him on.
And thanks!
I think all the negative hype surrounding Beans is a red herring. It’s easy to guess he will play poorly based on his numbers last year combined with some negative press, but there are two good reasons to expect him to bounce back:
1) He is presumably healthy.
2) His ft% was, in my opinion, an aberration based partly on low sample size, along with a broken shot and some bad press, which got into his head. As a result, he was unwilling to attempt what his injured body was capable of on offense, snowballing into Don Nelson putting him on a super-short leash.
Riley has made it clear that the organization is banking on Beans returning to his old form and, presumably, starting at center. I predict he gets about 30min/game, averaging 10-15pts, 8-10reb., and 50-60% from the line. If he can shock the world and creep into a 60%+ ft range, I’m personally going to take up religion and pray he gets more minutes, because the alternative is Lee/B.Wright/Gadzuric at center, and that makes me wanna puke, salute your shorts style!

Don't count out Brandan Wright
He wasn’t aggressive during summer league, but he hasn’t had much time to play and get back into shape. Remember, he still wasn’t able to play during the 82nd game last season, just to give you an idea of the timing relative to his appearance during summer league.
He’s had plenty of time since then to redevelop his form, and he’s still got a big training camp ahead of him. Aside from getting injured again, I have a huge amount of confidence in a healthy Brandan Wright. He’s got so many great tools for a young power forward, and his legs remain healthy and spry. He’s got more traditional skills as a scoring big man in the post.
His quickness getting off the floor, his length, and his soft touch will show you what he’s capable of doing when you give him the kind of playing time he needs for a full season. He’s a unique player.
I agree...
Brandan Wright has been one of my favorite Warriors since he got drafted. Before we got Lee, I was hoping he get the chance to start. I just hope this shoulder doesn’t become a nagging shoulder that can limit him this season as well. If Brandan Wright can play a star coming off the bench alongside Reggie Williams are team will be much better.
i LOL'ed
at the crazy phoenix picture
and at the idea that a player in NYC could be “under the radar”
but overall a fun read!

A very well thought out piece. Riley deserves to stay in place…he exceeded my expectations and is handling the situation like a pro….good for him. I actually agreed with all the points regarding the players BUT two regarding other subjects. If I were signing the checks I get rid of rowell and nelson asap….just figure i overpaid that much for the team and dump them….from an ownership point of view and the PR it is worth it….nelson sits around like he is dead and rowell is an award winning idiot…both play head games….give jeff van gundy the moon to coach along with either west or pritchard and you got a playoff team in a year.
I have no exact feelings on how I feel about Rowell,
but I really think Nellie should stick around as a consultant in regards to drafting players and signing free agents. He’s made so many steals in free agency, drafts, and trades in the past that he just has an eye for talent. Imagine how many careers he have saved or started the past three or four years.
motivation question
agree with you about his eye, but would Nelson be motivated to look as carefully knowing the fruit of that labor aids his successor and not him? we may be in a situation where we take all or nothing with him, and can’t say too many folks in his situation would be any different
"It’s frickin’ Sisyphean to be a Warriors Fan."
Agreed.
But it’s been going on pretty much so far this off-season without his input gettin in and with him having the record probably most important to him at this stage of his career he probably wouldn’t mind just being a consultant to this team that has had poor judgement on players in the past (Dunleavy, Diogu, O’Bryant, Foyle, Fuller, Taft, Belinelli, Lasme, Hendrix, and the list goes on and on and on).
give jeff van gundy the moon to coach along with either west or pritchard and you got a playoff team in a year.
What is Jeff Van Gundy going to do with a team full of undersized gaurds, one sf, the well-documented defensive liability that is David Lee, a poor post-defender in Beans, and a lack of front-court depth? JVG coaching the Warriors is like Meg Whitman running for publi—oh sh*t.

It's pretty amazing how much this team has been turned over
The team basically just went through a rebuilding process in one off-season. Consider that Ellis and Biedrins are now the lone players remaining from We Believe. Amazing.

True,
Some people used to forget that Azubuike was on that We Believe Squad but he was a rookie coming off the bench from the D-League so not many people remember. It was cool getting off work to find out that the Warriors have signed Rodney Carney who I put on the list of players to go after.
Start a Dwight Howard post.

Rebuilding process?
Hardly. I call rebuilding completely liquidating all assets to essentially start over new. Think Seattle in 07’, or the Blazers a year before. They expected to lose for a year.
The Warriors are showing signs that point towards winning now. AR + change for Lee is kinda counterintuitive to rebuilding by that logic.
Maybe it’s just semantics, but I’d call it retooling.
"I thought it was going in," Warriors center Chris Hunter said. "It looked like the invisible man tipped it away at the last second."
i'll use that next time.
