I agree

The Warriors feel more like a team for the entire Bay Area and not just Oakland. I like the unity that’s already been set, and naming them the Oakland Warriors would just leave out other places in the Bay Area (which is a bad thing in my opinion).

Another topic that I hear is that fans want a team in San Jose to go alongside the Warriors. I don’t really like that idea, either. Like I just mentioned, I love the unity that we already have with one team, and bringing another team in the Bay would just split people up and start a rivalry among each other. It’s already bad enough that we have so many people in the Bay Area hopping on the Lakers’ bandwagon.

For the name, I’d prefer to keep it as “Golden State Warriors”. It’s unique and sets our team apart from the rest of the NBA when it comes to how we’re labeled. I’d rather stand out than to fit in. Changing the name of our location isn’t going to get us more wins, I think people underrate how good of a name “Golden State” really is. It’s kind of like the New England Patriots. Just the fact that the name has the word “Golden” in it makes it good, but unfortunately the great name has had to be associated with losing seasons the past 14-15 years.

For sure, imagine if the Lakers had thought of it first and called themselves the GoldenState Lakers, you think they’d be trying to change it?

Golden State Lakers

I don’t know if you were being sarcastic, but that actually sounds good. Fits in with their whole gold/purple colorway and all the championship “gold” that they’ve won. It also works since they’ve been the best team in California for a long time. That’s why I said it’s sad that our great name had to be associated with a losing team, but hopefully the Warriors start to pick things up and actually become the best team in California like how it was in 2007 when we actually made it further than the Lakers.

I'm a Raiders and A's fan.

I still prefer the name “Golden State” or anything else in regards to the Warriors. If you’re changing it to anything, change it to the Bay Area Warriors. If you ask me, keep it Golden State.

There's absolutely nothing "unique" about the Warriors?

He can write it but not see it? What makes the Warriors unique is the Golden State name and the fact that they represent the whole extended bay area. Why would they wanna spoil that by emphasizing Oaktown or The City in their name?

Lights please, lights please, turn off the lights.

I echo some of the earlier posts

The Golden State name is a bit of a slap in the face to the city of Oakland, but I don’t see the point in changing it now. Bay Area Warriors might not be bad though. It’s true that the Warriors are the one team in the Bay that unites the entire area (aside from Lakers bandwaggoners) and we can all cheer on together. It’s true that the city of Oakland has been great support to the team, but they are hardly doing it all on their own. The team started off in SF and then migrated to the East Bay. It is truly a team representative of the entire region.

Maybe the Warriors could do an alternate jersey to represent Oakland or work it into one of the alternate logos. That would be a good compromise and a nice show of respect to the city they call home.

If the alternative is only Bay Area Warriors, I’d rather keep it Golden State. Bay Area Warriors sounds like your AA team at the Y. Or a chopper gang. Either one.

No one votes for Golden State Warriors of the Greater Bay Area? How about Golden State Warriors of Alameda County. I wanna go all Anaheim Angels of Los Angeles or whatever their stupid SlegnA name is. Go A’s.

If the Dubs ever moved to SF, I’d take it as a slight to the city of Oakland. I’d have to consider writing a letter to the Maloofs to persuade them to move the Kings to Oakland cuz I’d never root for a SF team even if they did keep the “G.S.” or “Bay Area” handle. When the XFL was around and the Demons were the only team with Bay Area ties, I wished for the league’s hasty demise. ; ) I am so freakin’ East Bay biased and am so jealous of all the attention the SF teams receive. Like how the Pacific time zone teams/fans complain of an east coast bias. Right on Newhouse for the excellent read.

Yeah, I'm kind of the opposite way

Hate East Bay teams, except the Warriors because there are no other basketball teams to root for.

I'm going to sound like a hypocrite,

but back when the Sonics were moving out of Seattle I was hoping for some consideration for them to move to SF.

San Francisco Supersonics. Has a nice ring to it, right?

Also, it would have been great to have Kevin Durant playing for the Bay Area. I think maybe a move like that would have caused the Warriors to change their name to Oakland Warriors. Then you’d have San Francisco Supersonics vs. Oakland Warriors type of battles. It would have been nice although I still prefer one team in the Bay. Imagine if both of the Sonics and Warriors made it in the WCF to play each other.

The only thing I don’t want is a second team in the Bay Area. I’m sick of splitting the market, it makes us all worse off. Instead of having one of the biggest market teams to root for, we have to root for two smaller market teams. You don’t see other markets comparable to the Bay Area splitting up the market (Boston, Dallas, Houston, etc.), so why would we want that to happen in basketball? Niners-Raiders and Giants-A’s has enough history that there’s nothing we can do about it now, but we can try to keep a big market NBA team. Don’t support moving a second team in, it’s stupid.

I agree..

I love that THE BAY is represented by one team. This is the team that unites us, and no matter how much they disappoint, for some reason they will and always be my favorite team to watch for any sport. It’s unfortunate though that Oakland doesn’t have the luster to attract bigger names though, which it should. Warriors need to hire a HR guy to show the visiting players a good time, and to make them realize that the bay is the S**T.

"The Bay"

Considering how often this term is used by everyone, how about:
The Bay Warriors
Bay Warriors

I think it sounds better than Golden State Warriors.

by srsrs on Sep 5, 2010 3:06 PM PDT reply actions

I kinda like the idea of renaming the Warriors to represent their place in the Bay Area,

but all of the names I can think of sound awful. The Bay Warriors, The Bay Area Warriors… ugh

Keep the

Golden State Warriors name. “Golden State” sounds very cool and unique. Its different than every other team in the NBA just like our new jerseys. All we need to do it start to contend for the gold and become a championship team and then everyone will love it. I agree Golden State is an underrate team name that I think should stay and not be changed.

I’ve never understood why people interpret “Golden State” as being an insult to Oakland. Are the New England Patriots insulting Boston (really Foxborough)? Florida Marlins insulting Miami? Tampa Bay Rays and St Petersburg? Texas Rangers and Arlington? New York Giants/Jets and New Jersey? Minnesota Twins, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, etc. It’s really not a big deal, sometimes teams do it. Why does it have to be an insult to Oakland?

You ever been to Oakland?

Or are you going by other’s point of views? I’m from San Jo, but go up to Oakland regularly for art fairs, music events and such and everyone I meet there is hella cool and down to earth. If only the rest of the bay had the same easy-going mentality.

Joe Lacob might be building something good

Dave Newhouse needs to find a real issue instead of stirring up s—t for no real reason. It’s geat that Lacob responds to fans by email-that shows responsiveness. Newhouse is weak. come up with something better than trying to stir some sort of Oakland nativism.

The Warriors don’t just belong to Oakland—I grew up in SF and supported the Warriors all the way. WTF.
