Monta's playing well this season. So is Steph. We are still under .500
What's the point? When Monta's on the floor we under utilize Curry. When Monta's off the floor....he's off the floor. So as Philthiest has pointed out before, Steph and Monta don't work together well on offense and defense.
I want to see the Warriors make the next jump to perenial contender. Only one player on our roster gives us that chance, and it's Stephen Curry. We've seen what Monta can do in a leading role over a whole season. We've seen disaster and decency. That's not going to cut it. In a perfect world, you would have Monta defer to Steph a little more, but as we've seen he's the face of the francise averaging 26 PPG. Why would he defer? He's close to being an all-star. Point is, i want the team to make some major improvement. I've already concluded Steph + Monta won't work. Defensively, they suck. Individually on offense they're good. Together on offense, they are mediocre.
This is not a Monta vs. Steph post, this is a 'what should the warriors do " post. Monta Ellis is not going to lead us to the title. We already know that. There are doubts he can even lead a team to the playoffs. We know what he can and cannot do, for the most part. He has very high trade value. We can improve a lot. IMHO, we will not reach our full potential until we further utilize Curry's offensive gifts. He's got major skills. It already looks like he's one of the best shooters to have played in the NBA.
So what should we do? Probably get some better post defenders, and trade Monta and other pieces for a legit star? Or trade Curry for a legit player maybe? Who is that player? Not sure, but Steph Curry is our most effective option at a star. He needs to take over. And if we see after 2 years (the same time we've given Monta to lead) and there isn't a discernible difference just start over. But we need to know what we have. I don't think we currently know what we have in Curry. Lee can be a great sidekick, and so can Monta (in the right role) but can Curry develop into Superman? I hope so, but as onixn points out it's unlikely. I'll take unlikely over undoubtedly no. That's what we're currently at.
