Warrior Wonder Standings (December)

After hovering around .500 for the first month of the season, the Warriors went 4-10 in December, falling further out of the Western Conference playoff picture.  Stephen Curry missed 6 games and Andris Biedrins was out for 7 but the team defense struggled as they surrendered at least 105 points in 8 of 14 games.  The Warriors played 8 road games in December, and they will play that many games away from home in the next two months combined, giving them a chance to climb back into the race.

Monta took his game to another level in December, putting the team on his back during Curry's absence and picking up the Western Conference Player of the Week award.  In the month of December Monta averaged 27 points while shooting an incredible 43% from 3-PT range.  Monta's Christmas game on national TV was one to remember as he dropped 39 points on 50% shooting and added 7 assists in a win over Portland.  With Curry out, Reggie Williams stepped up to help Monta carry the load.  Williams saw his minutes increase by 6 minutes a game in December, and although he couldn't duplicate Curry's passing skills, he immediately filled the scoring void by scoring 31 points against San Antonio in the game Curry went down.  He continued by scoring in double figures for the next 6 games.

I realize I didn’t even select a Warrior Wonder for my recap of our 21 Nov blowout loss to the Lakers. Mark me down for Jeff Adrien, I guess…

The Sleepy Team: Gadzuric, Adrien, Dorell. Unstoppable Baby!

No wonder why our team isn't that good.

Dan Gadzuric has played well enough to earn two WWs – the same amount as the guy who starts in front of him.

I can’t say for sure without checking, but I’m betting that Gadzuric’s WW’s were ironic.

No relation to Matt Cain...

My vote for him was fairly sincere, actually. Nobody else played well enough in the loss to Dallas to deserve it.

Yeah

Curry hasn’t played outstandingly well this season. Could be a sophomore slump after being runner up to the Rookie of the Year last season. Could be lots of new stuff for him to learn. Could be off court distractions with getting married. Factor in his mid December injury and some flu like symptoms on this road trip, and Curry hasn’t stood out much so far.

Curry hasn’t played outstandingly well this season. Could be a sophomore slump

He’s played about as well as he did last season— possibly a bit better.

Per 36, this year / last year
20.1 / 17.4 pts
.577 / .568 ts
.435 / .437 3fg
.923 / .885 ft
6.4 / 5.9 ast
3.7 / 4.4 reb
2.1 / 1.9 stl
3.3 / 3.0 tov
+3.4 / +2.0 plusminus

I’d agree that he hasn’t consistently been at the lofty levels of the second half of last season, when he looked like one of the 5 or 6 Top PGs in the NBA, but then we’re talking about a sample size of 27 games, many of which he’s played on a gimpy ankle. He may be a disappointment thus far for those of us who expected the second coming of Steve Nash right out of the gate, but there’s nothing in his production to suggest a real “sophomore slump.” (If you want to see what that looks like, check out Tyreke Evans’ season to date…)

Why are we talking about this again? Oh yeah: ‘Cos Curry’s only been awarded one GSoM “Warrior Wonder” to date. A highly reputable measure. ;-)

There will be no extra point!

Indeed it is

EXACTLY why Rob Kurz is better than Stephen Curry with his 2.066666666666667.

Slump might not have been the best word to use

Perhaps “wall” would be better. He hasn’t really had many standout, noticeable performances this season. It’s possible that, he might be slowed by his ankle. But a weak ankle doesn’t explain some really dumb brainfarts Curry showed a few times, such as the silly touch fouls.

The numbers for Curry may look comparable to last season’s stats, but there’s something about his floor game that doesn’t stick out in my mind so far like some of the other players do. For example, Monta is speedy, unguardable, and has some nifty finishing moves. DWright pump fakes like the world is coming to an end, and for whatever reason, it’s been decently effective, plus he hits catch and shoot 3s. Even Radman’s game sticks out with his defensive positioning and lately, hitting a 3 every now and then.

But when it comes to Curry, he hasn’t done anything that sticks out, except maybe those 1 handed passes and those dumb touch fouls. He’s not doing anything nifty as far as breaking down the opposing defense to score or to create an easy shot for others. He just doesn’t stand out to me. Now maybe he’s still in the learning and figuring it out stage, since the point guard position is supposed to be the hardest to learn. But this is what I’m referring to when I said Curry hasn’t done anything “outstanding” this season, as in, his game doesn’t stand out to me. It doesn’t feel “defined” yet.

He just doesn’t stand out to me.

I am glad that you brought this up IQ as I thought it was just me. His stats are ok but he does seem like a phantom out there sometimes. His body lanquage sometimes says “I am exhausted” even at the 1rst quarter or beginning of the 3rd. Slumping shoulders, tired facial expression…rather than angry or determined, sorta like “I wish I was somewhere else” look. Hard to put a finger on it. I love this guy but I notice the difference when suddenly he walks on with energy and a determined smile….like a moment in the Spurs game. Last season at this time he looked and played like he was enjoying himself…..

He does look disinterested-

I’m at a loss to explain it. But I wonder if both him and Lee are deferring to Monta too much. Which might not be Monta’s fault. I got a trace of a snit from Lee, when he backhandedly made a comment as to how he’s less involved offensively than he was with the Knicks, but “whatever is best for the team.”
Similarly, I think I could see Curry integrating Lee more into the Offense, but I wonder why the hesitation? Then I wonder how much of it is Smart. He doesn’t seem to be innovating much with what he has.
