Scoring Ratings for 2011 Free Agents

If the lockout ends, there is going to be an extremely abbreviated time period for signing free agents. In this post, I want to use my newly created scoring metric (PSAMS) to see if there are any players we might be interested in. Oh, and if you don't know who Steve Novak is,  you're not alone. This is also the first I've heard of him.

Star-divide

Before you think I'm crazy or high, please rest assured I'm not advocating going after Mr. Novak. I don't think we need another 3-point specialist on this team. And that 7.0 3-pt rating is clearly coming on an extremely small sample size. In fact, I would pretty much ignore any player that had fewer than 1000 or maybe even 1500 possessions. It's simply too small a sample size to make reliable conclusions.

So, who might we be interested in? Obviously, the big names at the top (Nene, Chandler, Gasol, and West) are the main attractions. It's not clear that we will have the cap room to sign any of these guys, unless we amnesty Biedrins. For my money (well, Lacob's money), the best case scenario would be to amnesty Biedrins and some how scrounge together the dough to go after Nene. Chandler and Gasol would obviously also be huge upgrades. If you look further down on the list (#42), you'll see DeAndre Jordan. I think his value depends on how much you see him improving. He's still young. It's a risk with a guy like that. He's one of those guys (maybe like Chandler a few years ago) that you figure if he puts it all together, can be an upper echelon center. But do you want to risk signing him to a big contract only to get, well, another Andris Biedrins down the road? I'm not sure that's the way to go.

We should go after Thaddeus Young (+1.07 PSAMS). He's still got upside at 23 years old. His multi-year RAPM rating last season was +2.1 (+0.8 offense, +1.3 defense). I think Young could fit well in our front court, and could play SF or PF depending on the need. Besides Klay, we really have no good backup for Dorell on this team. Thad would be by far our best inside threat (+3.12 inside rating according to PSAMS). I doubt that Philly lets him walk, though.

Other than those names, not a lot excites me. I actually like another Young, Nick Young, for his offense, but we have a guy in Reggie Williams that provides about the same amount of offense, and unfortunately, about the same amount of defense. Young probably isn't an upgrade and would be a little more expensive. Also, we just drafted Klay Thompson, who probably figures to get a lot of time backing up Monta over the next couple seasons. Does Lacob want to invest in a 3-yr deal for a guy like Williams or Young who might only see limited minutes once Klay establishes himself?

What about Rodney Stuckey? His positive offensive rating according to PSAMS is backed up by his +2.0 offensive RAPM rating. I'm not convinced that we should put that much faith in Lin or Jenkins as Curry's backup. Stuckey might work pretty well in that role. He could also play some SG next to Curry. A Stuckey-Thompson backup duo could be intriguing. One guy can drive (look at Stuckey's 2.18 FT rating!) and the other hits 3's. Stuckey's defense is questionable (-1.1 according to RAPM), but overall, if we could sign him for what Bell is getting paid now, it might turn out to be a big upgrade.

Anyway, enough of my yammering. Here's the list:

2011 PSAMS Ratings

For Type, U=unrestricted, R=restricted free agent.

As always, I'll remind you (SAMMY!) this list does not take into account things like defense, passing, and other stuff that helps teams win the games. It's just about scoring.

I've been a big proponent of Stuckey

I think his main problems in detroit are overuseage/too big a role. He’s a good player, not a front end one. I think for a team like us, he’d be very valuable because he brings everything we need. Bigger combo guard capable of playing point effectively. Good passer, very good ballhandler, low turnovers (less than both Curry and Monta per 36 for his career), good midrange game, but best going to hoop, gets to the line cause he’s strong, and makes his free throws.

Also if you notice, his defensive rating was a lot better in detroit his first year when they had a good team. To me that strikes me that he’s a good team defender, probably like Dorell. He had a better defensive rating than Chauncey, Hamilton and Prince. I bet some of it was like Dorell, he was getting limited minutes and was forced to play better D, as opposed to being seen as ‘the man’ leading to some defensive complacency.

A 3 man backcourt rotation of Stuckey, Curry, Monta sounds excellent. We can cut Monta to Curry’s minutes to below 36, and Stuckey can give us 24-28 minutes. Even last year his defense on SGs wasn’t poor.

The lack fo 3 point shooting doesn’t bother me one bit. We have enough guys to spread the floor, which could actually make his penetration and ability to get to line even better.

Problem is, it’s likely someone will overpay him. I’d give Stuckey a 4 year/20 mil deal. I doubt that’d get him. And considering other gaping holes, it’s probably not prudent for us to overspend on a 6th man

I always wanted Stuckey on this team

But you’re right on we probably won’t have enough money for him and he’d also want to go to a place where he’ll be the starter. I think he got into a huge fight with his coach about being benched and not started… Also, we need to use whatever money we have to go after a center first, then anything after that.

Funny that you like Stuckey for this, but not Martin. What’s the difference?

Theres a huge difference between the two man

Stuckey is a point guard and can actually play defense and pass the ball

Obviously, they are different players overall, but they score in similar ways. That’s what I was wondering about.

I didn't say I dislike Martin cause of this

I said I think he’s hugely overrated as a starting caliber/front end scorer cause of this.

I’d love Martin as a 6th man on an mle.

by tafkasam on Oct 7, 2011 10:34 AM PDT up reply actions

yeah cause Martin plays Monta style D.

monta actually tries on d

martin might be the biggest waste of a 6’7 frame. i think he still plays at his high school weight

Monta tries, but he doesn’t know what he’s doing. He tries doing bad things, though Kevin might still be worse than him.

How much of this is scheme?

I know under Nellie it was a major part of our system. Playing passing lanes and gambling. Smart didn’t change it much, in my opinion. It’s a clear gimmick system, but point is, it’s how our team was coached to play.

Not saying under the Jackson/Malone regime, Monta’s going to become an MJ lock down defender. I’m just curious how we’ll look when coaches come in who clearly don’t want to run same gimmicky system.

i am all for stuckey

mostly because it’d be nice to have a guy in our back court whose 6’5.

lemme say that again

A COMBO GUARD WHO IS 6’5

does that register with anyone?

It's lonely being the only Warriors fan at UMass :(

by j-spliff415 on Oct 7, 2011 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions

We had a 6’5" combo guard a couple years ago; his name is Jamal Crawford. If there is any reason to go after Stuckey, it’d be for his solid D and ability to actually run the point relatively well, not because he’s 6’5".

by WYK on Oct 7, 2011 9:41 PM PDT up reply actions

but the 6'5 makes the D legitimate

Yeah but why give out a decent sized contract when we really don't have a need for Stucks?

We just drafted Klay, plus we have Jenkins and who knows if ReggieWTF is coming back but I bet he’ll be cheaper than Stucks.

I’d rather amnesty one of our bigmen and try and pry Nene away from Denver’s increasingly chilling hands.

Thaddeus Young

Nice player, but for this team?

He’s best utilized as a 4, where he’s a bit undersized and defensively questionable. I don’t see our squad as the place for him unless Dwight Howard came.

And that’s without considering he’ll command a decent size deal (if Conley and Villanueva can get 5 years/40 mil, Thad should too)

And if Dwight Howard comes, i don’t care much who else we get.

by tafkasam on Oct 7, 2011 10:50 AM PDT reply actions

where he’s a bit undersized and defensively questionable

Not as questionable as Lee. His defensive RAPM is +2.0 compared to -2.7 for Lee. Young is getting most of his time at the 4 with Philly.

Interesting his defensive RAPM was so good.

Do you think philadelphia’s perimeter D has something to do with it? I’m pretty confident the Elton Brand/Spencer Hawes combo of rim protection next to Young wasn’t a positive factor in his favor.

by tafkasam on Oct 7, 2011 11:00 AM PDT up reply actions

Elton's defense was pretty good last year.

He’s still capable of protecting the rim.

last i checked, iguodola and jrue were pretty capable defenders

and brand and turner were shockingly decent as well

That's my point

How much of Brand’s defensive + rating is attributable to fact they had some of better perimeter D in NBA?

by tafkasam on Oct 11, 2011 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions

BTW

Hollinger said Stuckey was snubbed and should have been top 50 according to ESPN NBA rank. Interesting.

he posted a .744 TS% last year. If we get Steve Novak we are going to be undefeated. Lacob listen to the fans!

I think David West might be a decent deal right now, after his injury. He was defending really well prior to getting hurt, which turned me on to him. Then we give Lee the amnesty boot.

I'd still not do it.

Unless David West was like a 1-2 year 6-8 mil a year player. He’s 31 off an ACL tear. David Lee’s atleast 28 and healthy.

I’m assuming West will get 3 years, 21-27 mil

I could see it. But then again I could also see another Elton Brand Philly fiasco circa 2008.
