Nab Josh Smith...and a FA Center
Atlanta is going to lose Jamal Crawford and they are also looking to shake things up with a rough end of last year. So...
Josh Smith hasn’t changed his mind on a future with his hometown Atlanta Hawks: He believes he’s probably run his course with Atlanta. Without an owner committed to making the changes to push this team past its second-round Eastern Conference ceiling, sources said he’d still welcome the team putting him into a trade.
Trade works out to save us another $2mil in cap space. They land a replacement for Crawford in Ellis and a new young (sort of) PF to jump in for Smith.
The Warriors on the other hand are currently $7 million under the cap. After the amnesty of Bell (4mil) and Smith trade (2mil), we are at $13 million under the cap. Shopping spree...Gasol/Nene/Chandler? Big upgrade.
Curry/Lin/(FA)
DWright/Reggie (resigned)
JSmith/Klay
Lee/Amundson/Tyler
Nene or Chandler/Biedrins

Is he not more of a PF?
I know he has a good defensive reputation, but I have also heard that he doesn’t play to his skill set on offense and instead tries to do too much.
He’s not enough of a shooter to play 3 in the NBA.

Plus his game still feels raw
(even though he’s been in the league for a while and has been an all-star)
I lived in Atlanta for a bit and watching him day after day over the course of a season is ridiculously frustrating. He’s a feast or famine type of player that might not mesh well with Coach Jackson.
But you gotta love the size and toughness upgrade this trade would bring. His talent is undeniable and if he could dial up his consistency, then you’d have a bonafide stud at that big wing position.
The fit with Lee is tough positionally but not in terms of skill set. That’s the conundrum with Josh Smith in GS.

Slide him to PF and let Lee play some SF. We might sacrifice some shooting, but we’d be a much bigger team…

Lee at SF?

This trade combined with a Lee amnesty would give a lot of flexibility for going after a center.
My homer side hates to see the perfect PF/C defensive backup young guy leave as well though…

I think this is a good, somewhat realistic trade.

+1
if ATL would take this, I’m down.
Sucks to lose Monta and Udoh, but I’m a big supporter of Smith

Come on…we’ve played Acie Law at the 3 before.
by warriorfan4eva on Nov 30, 2011 11:23 PM PST reply actions
We technically can start Smith at the 3 and have him basically play near the rim like a 4, while Lee hangs around the mid-range area like he usually does. Start the game with a big lineup and switch up the lineup over the course of the game for match-up purposes and whatnot.
I like this! But only if they get a center that can shoot 3s. Bargnani for Biendrins? Otherwise, teams will just pack it in inside, there will be no lane to drive.
They can also try to play unconventional at times with Lee at 5 and Smith at 4, and with either Iguodala or Gay this could be a very good team.
Eww… Bargnani sucks and his contract makes things worse. We’re better off shipping the lifeless shell formerly known as Andris Biedrins to Utah for Memo Okur’s ruptured Achilles.
by WYK on Dec 1, 2011 1:08 AM PST up reply actions
I agree...
Biedrins=useless for the next couple years
Okur=expiring
Actually though, Utah has got to be looking into making a trade. I think they are gonna trade a big, because they have Jefferson, Okur, Millsap, Jeremy Evans, Favors, and Kanter. Those are a lot of guys who can get pt, so that will really be a jam. Any way we can snag one of those guys from them?
by Yii on Dec 1, 2011 9:45 PM PST up reply actions
I don’t really see that as being an issue.
With Dorell and Curry on the outside, teams will have to respect the perimeter. Lee is also a very good mid-range shooter – so that’s three guys on the floor who opposing defenses have to worry about jump-shots from. If Smith could repeat his (career best) last-year numbers from beyond the arc, he’s be a reasonable threat out there, too – particularly if he had instructions not to shoot unless he was wide open.
I like this mix
that’s a unit that can score in a lot of ways and actually defend to an extent. Add Chandler and that’s a team that could be tough defensively.

i like this with the exception of lack of depth at the 2
unless reggie would be started.
i’m still on the d wright would fit best as the sixth man train
It's lonely being the only Warriors fan at UMass :(
Yeah dude!
It would suck to be defensively capable.

I don’t see a Wright/Smith wing combo working….Smith at the 4 and Wright at the 3 would make more sense.
"I seldom post but I have to say alot of ppl do hate on J-Ridah. All he has ever done is give us inside information. I know I may not like what he said about the nightlife and how it effects free agency but after meeting Dorell Wright after the we believe game I have to admit he was right. Every player there was asking where the club was. I think J-Ridah is the best poster on this board and he makes this place interesting during the lockout. He should be a administrator here or start his own site in which I would join." J-RIDAH on J-RIDAH
What about Monta/Biedrins for Smith/Marvin Williams?
ATL can slide Horford to PF, and we get more depth at 2/3.
They’d want more…we’d have to include Klay

3 Free Agents I would like to add..
11. Shane Battier, Grizzlies, SF, 33, $7.3 million 2010-11 salary, U: There won’t be a shortage of interest for the tough defender, 3-point shooter and respected professional. Miami, New Jersey, Boston, Oklahoma City, the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State could try to sign him. The Grizzlies also could try to keep him. Tremendous leader and one of the best role players of his generation.
13. Jason Richardson, Magic, SG, 30, $14.4 million 2010-11 salary, U: A veteran team needing scoring could use its midlevel exception to try to sign Richardson. J-Rich said he would like to come back here and retire a Warrior…

He barely does. Aside from being a solid spot-up shooter, what else can Dorell really do consistently on offense?

I do love his pump fakes. They’re so predictable and exaggerated that I burst out laughing whenever someone actually falls for it.

I thought the same thing. Landry is a damn good offensive player but can’t rebound to save his life.

Yeah, lots of us do. I think the majority still like Monta, though.
by Reverend_Randy on Dec 1, 2011 8:19 PM PST up reply actions
this
I love Monta, don’t really want to trade him, but see him as somewhat expendable, and a big enough “known name” to possibly bring back some nice talent (in an area of greater need)

this
I mean, I guess what I am (constantly) hoping for is that Monta somehow starts to play better D, take less stupid shots (long 2’s, driving into 3 or 4 guys)…
My ideal situation is that Monta stays, and we somehow acquire enough talent to turn him into our 6th man. There is just a ton of evidence that Monta does not really help the team win as much as helping us get on sportscenter

so anybody that pays attention is in favor of trading monta
dude hes not the problem!! We need a big man that actually plays big and some help off the bench. So we get Josh Smith and magically we win 50 games? That dont make any sense. We’re a Tyson Chandler and Brandon Roye from making this is 50 win team. Keep Monta. Keep the nucleus and build off that. Too many changes jacks up the chemistry. And I do pay attention.
Tuck Rule my ass!
Your arguments have been hashed out a million times on this blog. There are a lot of arguments to be made that Monta Ellis doesn’t actually play winning basketball.
We don’t have a nucleus. Ellis and Curry can’t work long term. Neither of them play defense, but Curry at least naturally fits in at his position.
Ellis hurts the team on both sides of the ball. His selfish offense combined with his low efficiency is not a good combination.
We’re not going to get a big man that can just erase Monta’s defensive mistakes. There are only a couple of those guys in the league and we couldn’t easily get one of them in a trade. He isn’t such a talent that we should worry about building around him. He doesn’t score like Michael Jordan or something. Really, we’re a capped out team who has some goodish players on big contracts and one really good player on a small team friendly rookie contract. As it stands, we aren’t going anywhere. We’re in NBA purgatory. Not bad enough to get a real franchise player (not even Curry is a franchise guy) and not good enough to actually compete. We can’t just get Tyson Chandler and a broken Roy and improve by 15 wins.
by Reverend_Randy on Dec 3, 2011 12:24 PM PST up reply actions
Warrior fans want to win and we want to get better defensively.
Ellis is 2 guard and would need a large PG next to him like Baron, Kidd or Williams. Those guys would be hard to get or have horrible contracts, so it is easier to trade Curry who also happens to be a better passer and shooter. David Lee gets a lot of flack for his defense too, I think Warrior fans are just tired of terrible defense and want to get a traditional defense playing basketball team.
He's a player who's terrible on defense, a bad rebounder for his position, and who's scoring helps the team far less than you think it does -
- because of relative lack of efficiency.
Why should we want to keep him?
If we get Smoov, DONT Amnesty Lee
Trade him.
He’s not untradeable. We can get a couple decent players.
Move Lee to Center
… but hell yeah to Josh Smith. I’ve thought for a while that’s our best move with Monta. And yes, to whoever asked it, I am a W fan and very in favor of trading Monta.

At least one front court player needs to be able to shoot mid-range shots
