FO's Biggest Mistake This Off-Season: Promising the Playoffs 6 months ago
We have talked the free agency and trade thing into the ground and it is now apparent that the Warriors are not going to make a major move this season. CP3 and Dwight are staying put because there are so few legitimate trade possiblities and all the free agents that could have helped the team are off the market. The Warriors have used the amnesty on Charlie Bell in anticipation of a deal that required a few million to come off the books to ensure the luxury tax is avoided, but they failed to realize that they were never even a player in the market.
The inability to make a major trade or sign a difference maker in the free market are nothing new, but the use of the amnesty on Charlie Bell really has me pissed off and doubting the new ownership team and its inner circle. They are making a huge mistake in promising the fans a trip to the playoffs this season and the failure to admit their mistake is going to create several years of failure instead of 1 or 2.
There are two legitimate ways to use the amnesty: 1) It should have been held until a trade was completed. The team could then amnesty whoever they wanted in order to avoid the luxury tax or create cap room. 2) It should have been used to create cap/luxury space for next year when options were exhausted without success.
#2 is an especially essential part to our roster stratgey because this team is not capable of doing any damage in the playoffs in its current form. Maybe the team can really pull together and get a 7 or 8 seed in the chaos of a short season, but then what? Who cares about a first round out in the playoffs knowing that the next season is going to be equal or worse?! What fans really want is to see a progression towards a championship contender.
Ownership really screwed the pooch when they promised the playoffs because they left themselves no room to back out and say that we really need one more year to correct the mistakes of the Cohan era. They have put themselves in a position to try for the playoffs now with a mediocre roster when they should be targeting a rebuild with a vengence next year. Teams have to be bad to rebuild successfully outside of the major markets. Great players dont want to come here just because. They have to get a high lottery pick in a strong draft season, and the only way to do that is to suck. They have to dump average players with big contracts (amnesty Biedrins in 2012) so that the cap space exists for a big signing.
The worst part is that ownership didnt even need to promise the playoffs. This isn't Minnesota, fans were already buying tons of tickets and cheering like maniacs at every meaningless game. The Bay has crazy love for the Warriors and the NBA in general. The ownership team put themselves in a bad spot for no reason. Could they have made a bigger mistake in their first year of ownership?

I think
if we make the playoffs as the 7th or 8th seed, then this season was great. We coached prospects, didnt commit long term money, and can finally put that stupid 1st round pick trade behind us.
It’s not all doom and gloom, the season is about to start! Be excited, I am one of the people that believes our current roster can do it. Rome wasnt built in a day and we have a whole new office in charge that will pay dividends.
question
Regarding this years’ first rounder- are the Jazz required to take the pick if it’s outside the top 7? I know it’s top 7 protected, but does that mean they have to take it, or can they choose to take next year’s pick instead?
I think the agreement is that if it is outside of the top 7, they must take it
…but I’m not really sure
why on earth would they not take it though?

No reason to use amnesty on Bell
Wasn’t his contract expiring anyways? Just pay him the 4 mil to sit on the bench then let the contract expire and we still have the amnesty to use next year. Now it is gone, we have no Bell and nothing to show for the amnesty on him. We wasted a 4 mil amnesty when it could have been used on a higher contract later or at least reevaluate later….well I guess the FO had more hope in getting DJ than they really did, that is all I can think about the Bell amnesty, just doesn’t make sense other than the fact he liked to drink too much and they just wanted him gone, which does make sense and is justifiable.

i agree
huge waste of an incredible asset that will never come around again. did they not realize we got to keep it? did they not realize everyone in the league has the same amnesty clause? again im left scratching my head and i think its time the FO lets the fans know whats going on and what direction the want to take and HOW THEYRE GONNA GET THERE.

great post..I agree..The Bell amnesty if awful and makes me doubt ownership as well...
say what you want about Michael Jordan and his ability as an owner/gm, but even he realizes now how bad being a middling team in the NBA is….Here’s a quote from an article on espn.
“Marred in what he felt like an endless cycle of mediocrity — battling for the final spot in the playoffs every season — the Bobcats decided to trade away their two best players last year in Gerald Wallace and Stephen Jackson and began to build with an eye toward the future.”
This infatuation of getting the 8th seed is really pointless…we are essentially Bobcats West…they made the 8th spot and it did not serve as a stepping stone to contention…it just prolonged the inevitable rebuild.

Playoffs
This year Minnesota and LA Clippers are definitely improved, so the west will be more competitive than last year, meaning the fight for 7th and 8th seeds will be brutal. It will definitely be interesting to see the Warriors in the midst of that fight.
I’m completely disgusted with the front office. Guess what Lacob? The roster sucks, and you just re-signed the man who assembled it! Thanks for the back-to-back crappy coach hirings too. They’re young and hip and charismatic. And Don Nelson has taken craps that know more about coaching than either of them.
Yay, we have exciting prospects that we’re developing in the front office! Our assistant coach is awesome! We got an extra second round pick! Oh, and watch out for Dakota! That’s like having our own prospect factory!
Seriously? And some of the fans buy this BS?
We have one of the worst rosters in the West, and probably bottom 10 in the league. No real cap room, possibly no draft pick (though a center tandem of Beans/Brown could help us get that pick back).

If they do a full rebuild, they're not doing it with curry
He’ll leave them, get traded like cp3. Or since he has the biggest trade value he can be the piece to trade a top 7 pick in this years upcoming draft. I’m down for that for the record. Along with trading away Monta and lee and replace them with udoh and klay. Then andris will suck enough for a few more years and then retire. By then the warriors will be the new thunder. Or like the old thunder, well, you know.

oh, and move to the city!
Wouldn’t that be awesome!? A fresh team of young high draft picks in a new building. The warriors of the future.

oh, and if they want mark jackson long term, that might work or it may
He can teach all his draft picks defense first

oh, and move to the city!
that would be a negative. SF signifies soft and Oaktown signifies tough so they need to stay where the port work gets done. SF had it’s day as the working waterfront and sold out to the soft crowd.

Here we are again.

If the front office's biggest mistake was something they said -
- rather than a signing, trade, or draft pick, then you’re probably in pretty good shape.
nellie sucks
and the biggest mistake was not trading curry and monte.
