Dalembert > Kwame
Some actual basketball-related news for a change today:
A source with knowledge of the deal said Samuel Dalembert will be paid approximately $7 million in the first season and the Rockets have a team option worth approximately $7 million in the second season that includes a $1.5 million buyout if it is declined.

For the same price I'd so much rather have grabbed Dalembert than Kwame Brown. He's a better player in almost every single way, and Houston has a relatively cheap buyout for next year if they find something better or it doesn't work out. Why can't our front office be creative like this?
Man...just another case of our GM(s) being outfoxed by Daryl Morey yet again....

warriors didnt want to give multiple years to a band aid
Kwame took one year. A center like dalembert isn’t looking to sign for one year

Did you read the article?
Or even the quote for that matter?
He signed for two years, $14M with a Team Option on the 2nd year that has a $1.5M buyout. Much more flexibility for the team. If he’s great, $7M is a bargain. If he sucks, $1.5M isn’t much to get rid of him.

an agent wont talk to certain teams without an option.
And of course I read it. Get smart someone else.

if Brown sucks
it’s 7mil. So what’s your point?
I thought money is not an issue for Warriors, or are we still in Cohan era?

salary cap bro
Every mill counts.

That’s $8.5 million over two years, with the $1.5 million buyout not even counting towards the cap on the second year. And since Dalembert is much less likely to suck than Kwame, he’s still the better value.
No. It's 7 million this year.
It’s 1.5 minimum against next year’s cap.
I can’t claim to have been paying much attention to either Kwame or Dalembert last season. Over their careers, it’s cleaer Dalembert was the better player, but last year is more ambiguous: Dalembert was uncharacteristically awful with the ball in his hands (.509 TS, 2.5 TO/36) while Kwame had one of his better years (.550TS%, 1.4 TO/36). Dalembert was the better rebounder and shot blocker and better according to +/-.
I think Dalembert is probably a better deal … unless that $1.5m against next year’s cap puts you in a position where you can’t make a move you want to make. But the difference is small and not worth fretting over. They’ve both mediocre centers.
The buyout would count against the cap?

Yes.
Think about it.
If not, then you would never need an amnesty. You could just tell a player like Charlie Bell, “We’re buying you out for the price of your contact.” Pay him every dollar owed and magically it’s no longer on the cap.
Sure, but in your example, that isn’t a contractually agreed-upon buyout. You’re just choosing to get rid of a players salary in a contract that you acquired.
I’m wondering if it being written in the contract (just between the organization and player) makes it different. They’re just dangling a carrot for Sam to take a short deal: like, “hey, if we don’t pick up your option next year, we’ll give you $1.5M as a consolation.” Since they would be declining their option, I’m not sure why the buyout would have anything to do with the cap.

In essence, they aren’t buying out that second year at all. They’re just awarding him with $1.5M if they don’t pick up that second year at all. I can’t tell if I’m conveying my point adequately. Is my logic making sense? :)

You can't pay a player and have it not hit the cap.
Doesn’t matter if you’re paying them to play or to go away.
whew
i’m SOOOOOO glad he’s not back in Sac…he an’t much, but thatd give em too much depth…helps us a lot….whew…SOOOOO glad!
He wouldn't have gone for 8.5M this year and a team option of 7M next year?
So horrible that we signed Kwame when Sam was still available.
http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/
Um.... Dalembert is pretty much same level player
There is almost noi difference in quality.
Neither have any offensive game, last year KWame was more efficient. Career wise it’s been Dalembert.
Kwame is a better post defender. Dalembert is a better help defender. We have enough help defenders.
It’s not like we’re talking Chandler and Kwame. It’s Kwame Dalembert. I actually think Kwame fits our needs more.
Can I see some synergy numbers on post defense?
Not being snarky. Seriously. I’m curious.

Remember...
There is no guarantee that Dalembert wanted to sign with us. In fact there is no sign whatsoever that he wanted to play here. From the sound of it he might have taken less to sign with Houston because he wasn’t happy with the situation in Sacramento.
Actually, there were reports that he was open to coming here. I’d dig up references if I wasn’t lazy.

![Rumor: Warriors Pushing Corey Maggette Hard in Trade Talks [Yahoo! Sports]
"Three NBA executives say that the Golden State Warriors are pushing Corey Maggette hard in trade talks. Other players that executives say are available include Philadelphia 76ers center Sam Dalembert, Charlotte Bobcats guard Raymond Felton and forward Adam Morrison, Chicago Bulls forward Drew Gooden and guard Larry Hughes and Sacramento Kings center Brad Miller."
Looks like the Dubs are pushing Maggette out, but is any team actually interested in pulling him in right now? Maggette has 4 years left on his deal after this season (2009-2010: $8.9 million, 2010-2011: $9.6 million, $10.3 million, $10.9 million). Way to go Robert Rowell on "protecting" the Warriors' long term salary cap structure by not resigning Boom Dizzle!
I'd be all about bringing Drew Gooden back to the Bay though. This Oakland-born balla from El Cerito High would be an ideal complement for Andris Biedrins up front. He has a nice mid-range jumper, a few offensive skills, and would definitely improve the Warriors' rebounding, especially paired up with Biedrins. Gooden's actually an expiring contract at $7.1 million this season, so it'd be a great move cap-wise.
I'm probably THE harshest critic of the Jason Richardson for Brandan Wright trade (and I in turn have my harsh critics for that stance), but I still to this today contend that as great as J-Rich was he could be moved for a decent 4 like Gooden to improve that We Believe team. Trading JR for a raw, unready rookie with questionable upside, an unused $10 million dollar trade exception that this franchise was too cheap to actually use, and some propaganda about how it helped the team resign Biedrins and Moped Ellis was a joke though.
Maggette for Gooden straight up?](http://cdn1.sbnation.com/fan_shot_images/26164/3157842465_c0e0f09746_small.jpg)
