Building Around Steph Curry

Does anybody think that we should be focusing on building around Stephen Curry? I mean, if he really does leave the Warriors in 2 years, I'd be devastated. I'm gonna be crying in the corner forever. If you love Curry and you aren't willing to trade him for anyone (ex: Dwight or CP3's one year expiring contract), then you'd understand.

Star-divide

Should we start treating Steph like he's the man? Like he's Kobe Bryant or Lebron James? Should we build our team around him? I think we should. We should start bringing guys that he'll be happy to play with, guys that will make him want to stay here.

Everyone is talking about signing Nene/Gasol/Chandler or anybody in that tier, but have we even thought about asking Curry who he would most like to play with?

If Curry is unhappy with Monta, or he's tired of the drama, would we be less hesitant to trade Monta if we knew that we NEEDED this guy for the future?

Maybe we can draft his brother, Seth, in the next NBA draft...or the year after that? I have no idea when his draft year would be. That would definitely cause him to stay here. Or how about bringing in Turiaf again? He's a really supportive guy that was always there for Steph in his rookie year.

So my point is, we should stop desiring to sign the guys we want, or who the front office wants, we should sign who Steph Curry wants. That's my personal opinion though. What do you think?

ALSO, If you think that we should be building the team around someone else, then just replace Steph's name above with whoever you'd like. (:

We should build around Curry, but see how this current team fits with him

Coach Jackson should give Curry command of the offense this year and that will allow us to see how the currrent roster compliments him and if significant changes truly are in order.

The main thing that kept Steph from taking control of the team before was Keith Smart giving his minutes to Acie Law, as well as grossly overplaying Monta and Dorell Wright. If Curry gets the minutes he deserves and Monta and Dorell’s are dialed back the teams efficeincy should improve dramatically. Monta can focus more on scoring and finishing shots like he was doing when Baron ran the point, while Dorell can focus more on hitting threes and giving a better effort on that strong wing defense he was once known for, something the Warriors desparetly need.

We now have a bench as well as back up bigs, including Udoh for a full year. The priority right now should be signing a big-defensive center, and a veteran wing like Shane Battier to provide leadership and strong defense.

You can build around Curry from the stand point that your putting the team in his hands as a floor leader, but does that mean he is your franchises # 1 player? of course not, but he has to be in your top three with a real star ahead of him…

Our big three right now of Monta Steph and Lee is not going to be enough to put this team over the top, although anyone of them can be your 3rd best player, and just maybe Curry can be your # 2 in a couple years…

We need a bonafied star as our #1 and there are very few out there…our chances of getting one is very slim unless he’s home grown…they come through the draft, so if were just good enough to make the playoffs were stuck in mediocrity, that’s the reality…

Just maybe JT will turn out to be a star, at this moment I have no idea…but we need one if were going to get to the top of the mountain..

That's the thing, we don't look like were gonna top the mountain anytime soon

Unless some kind of miracle happens and DHoward wants to come the Bay, why not just stand pat for a year and see what you have with this team and a new coach?

The poll should really only have three options:

1. Curry
2. Any Other Ridiculous Warrior That Would Make You Stupid For Choosing Them
3. None of the Current Warriors

I’m waiting on this season before deciding between #1 and 3. In the meantime, I think there are probably only 10-15 NBA players for whom I would definitely trade Curry.

There will be no extra point!

Curry is my second favorite player in the league

I believe he has the capability to be one of the top 5 point guards in the league if he’s just given the keys to a proper offense, but anyone who wouldn’t trade him for Chris Paul is out of his/her mind.

Yeah, potential to be top 5 PG <<<<<< hands down best PG in basketball

by Missing Barry on Dec 4, 2011 3:41 PM PST up reply actions

Definitely.

Curry is our star PG in the making. As a PG he has huge responsibilities to lead this team and thus, he should be the vocal leader and play leader. He should command the ball at all times, setting up plays and shooting the lights out. Oh wait, he does most of these things, except for playing more.

What needs to happen though, is let probably trade monta for a supportive SG, i.e. Iggy. Iggy is the perfect teammate for Curry because Iggy does not demand the ball that often and is a perfect complement for a PG. His defense is pretty stellar, atheltic, and can score too, but not as good as monta. But Defense > Offense is best on a really offensive team. I say if we do pick up a center, pick up Chandler. If we cant get chandler at a reasonable price, stick to what we’ve got and let Curry/Iggy/Lee grow as a core.

Im going on a limb as say Lee will have a fantastic 2nd year with the Warriors. He will definitely be more comfortable and will have a voice on the offense. Udoh will also be integral this upcoming season and IF we dont get a center we like, I wouldnt mind starting Udoh and Lee as (pf and C, respectively).

Thus our potential starting lineup:

Curry/Lin/Jenkins
Iggy/Klay
Dorell/Reggie(or some FA)
DLee/Lou/Udoh
Chandler/Udoh/Tyler

curry & iggy TEAM USA buddies.

What does it mean to build around a player like Curry?

Building around curry means only two things: not trading Curry and trading Monta for a player who won’t have alpha dog issues with Curry, and will be a better offensive and defensive fit next to him.

But in general the whole idea of “building around” a player isn’t particularly relevant. He’s not good enough to pass up a better player for a worse one in order to fit with him.

With some players, that makes sense. If you have Lebron, you focus on getting guys who can run up and down the court with him. If you have Dwight, you really look for wings who can hit the three.

I like Steph as a player, a lot – he’s not that kind of force of the court, not yet.

i picked UDOH for fun..

but i say NOBODY should we build around .. lets build around a concept~ “WINNING”

We have no other option

We have to build around him at this point. Hopefully he busts out this year. You really just have to get lucky in the draft and land that #1 or #2 pick in a year where there’s a Lebron, Duncan or get lucky with a Wade, Amare pick.

If Curry is your best player….you’re probably not gonna win any championships. He might be good enough to get you to the playoffs though.

We’re in trouble. Especially if we sign Chandler for $20mil/yr

In an ideal world (meaning it obviously won't happen)

We’d amnesty Biedrins next summer, have Ellis and Lee be the only players with major contracts on this team, and make a splurge in the 2012 Free Agency, which can potentially be incredible (D Will, CP3, Dwight, among others so long as they don’t sign extensions)

This way Curry’s great play could lead the Warriors to semi-relevancy and attract the stars while Curry is still on his rookie scale contract.

This would be in an ideal world, though, so it won’t happen :/

easier said than done kemosabe

there are hardly any top knotch players out there dying to play with steph, whereas monta has been mentioned before as a player of interest to other players

it’s hard to do too, because steph has really to declare himself as a facilitator or a scorer, so it’s difficult to build the pieces around him successfully

It's lonely being the only Warriors fan at UMass :(

This is the year where we learn if we can build with Curry

We will likely have a FA siging at center, so Curry will have a legit center, Lee, Wright, and Monta to work with. No All Stars, but a cast of legit players. If Curry (is allowed to) plays like a legit PG and continues to shoot well, other players will want to team up with him. If Monta hogs the ball and Jackson has line up issues, Curry will be victimized and next year no one will target golden state.

I hope Jackson takes a page out of the Harbough/Smith playbook and tailors this season around Curry’s talents and chemistry with his teammates.

by warriorsvictim on Dec 5, 2011 12:48 PM PST reply actions

agreed

+1 on Jackson. He’ll be the key to whether we can really understand something about our future with Curry.

I like Curry a lot though.

Unless a player is one of the very few players good enough to be the best player on a championship contender, the concept of “building around” is flawed. Curry appears to be a pretty good player, a player who helps provide more wins than losses. He is not good enough to be the best player on a contender. Treating him as such (e.g. paying him whatever it takes to keep him; specifically using him and his strengths and weaknesses to influence what other players you acquire) is a strategy that will max out at mediocre.

“Building around” is a buzz word phrase. When buzz words start dictating actual decisions, things have gone awry. That said, it happens often. A smart GM should exploit other teams’ pathetic devotion to buzz word-inspired practices and policies, not fall victim to the same errors.
