Damn, Monta can get Bun B on a track? It’s ridiculous the amount of opportunities you have as an artist from just being famous for something else (see: Drake).

you talking about degrassi?

Actor or not, Drake can spit and sounds good doing it. Although no doubt it helped him jump start his rap career.

Drake...

2nd most annoying voice in Rap. 1st is the voice he copied, Lil Wayne.

really think they're the worst?

What about waka flocka? And back in the day: Mase. He sounded perennially tired.

‘Course if you’re annoyed by two of the most popular rappers right now, then things get really annoying.

I honestly don't listen to modern day mainstream rap anymore.

Even guys like Lupe Fiasco have started to turn for the worst.

Zion I is very mainstream sounding

Just because they haven’t made it big yet doesn’t change that.

Seen then live though. They put on a good show.

Anyway I have no hatred for Lil wayne or Drake. They are just massively overplayed which is annoying

by tafkasam on Apr 26, 2011 10:06 AM PDT up reply actions

That doesn't change the fact they're very good.

I know

But I’m saying if you heard “the bay” everytime you started your car on 5 different radio stations (like lil wayne or Drake) you might think differently.

Lil Wayne and Drake are annoyingly unavoidable, but I liked both initially before they got super mainstream play

by tafkasam on Apr 26, 2011 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions

1) Degrassi boy and Lil Wayne do not rap. They half sing/half mumble with various filters over the vocal track to make it less horrible. They are the Rebecca Blacks of rap.

2) Zion is is not mainstream at all. Nobody who has a song called “Bird’s Eye View” that samples the Alan Parsons Project can be referred to as mainstream. That’s a rule.

alright guy

I was so close to using birds eye view as my example. Both those songs are 100% mainstream sounding. They could EASILY be on radio and wild949. Nothing using alan parsons project sample can be considered mainstream? “HEARTLESS” by Kanye uses Alan Parsons sample…

My point was it has a mainstream sound to it. Just because it isn’t yet doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a mainstream sound.

I never said I cared for Drake or Lil Wayne, but I don’t think they are bad. Nor do I need to hate on them to prove I know more about music.

personally I’d rather listen to Hiero than that stuff but w/e.

Atlantic records screwed over Lupe

Still one of my favorites, listen to the stuff that got cut off the album

My top 5 :

1. Kanye
2. Cudi
3. Lupe
4. B.o.B
5. Zion I

You guys must be like twelve years old! Do your homework! If KRS-one saw this list his head would probably explode.

Here is a legitimate list, based on MC skills, as opposed to commercial success (Kanye is one of the worst rappers of all time. His analogies suck, and his cadence is off, etc.):

1)Mikah 9 (If you don’t know about Freestyle Fellowship or The Good Life scene, you’re missing out on some of the best hip-hop ever.):From a lyrical and rhythmic standpoint, this dude beats every other MC ever, easily, and he freestyled all of it.

2)Guru: On the other end of the spectrum, Guru used simple rhythms but was amazingly eloquent and clever, and he was doing it in 1989.

Above the crowds, above the clouds where the sounds are original/
infinite skills create miracles/warrior spiritual/Above the clouds raining down/Holdin it down.

3)Rakim: There is no way any top five doesn’t include this guy. Rakim completely revolutionized the game and make Kurtis Blow et. al. sound like they were doing nursery rhymes.

Follow me into a solo, get in the flow,
And you could picture, like a photo/
Music makes mellow, maintains to make,
Melodies for MCs, motivates the breaks.

4)Del: How can you put Zion I on your list and leave out the undisputed king of bay area hip-hop? Del is right up there with Mikah 9 as far as incredibly intricate rhythmic delivery and clever lyrics. Yes, he often sucks live because he’s drunk, but he’s recorded some of the best rhymes ever. Hopefully I don’t need to include any examples. If you haven’t heard Del you’re probably somewhere deep in former Yugolsavia.

5)Kool Kieth: This is the only selection I would consider up for argument. His early work with Ultramagnetic MCs seems primitive now, but was groundbreaking. That’s worth something. His later stuff reflects his devolving mental state, which is a turn-off for many. Personally I think he took hip-hop to a whole new level with absurdist lyrics and bizarre song structures, but I can understand the argument that he’s too wacky.

Whew! Sorry about that. That was not basketball related at all, but I am a huge hip-hop nerd and that had to be said.

Kanye is definitely not one of the worst rappers of all time.

And i am a fan of Rakim and Del too. But wow, Kanye is good. Cudi is not really a rapper. He’s kinda a singer/rapper. I dunno.

I’m not sure the last time I heard Cudi rhyme more than one syllable. Which is fine, but it’s really annoying when people call him a good rapper.

He’s just filling a void in the market, really.

Kanye is an incredible producer...

But a mediocre rapper, at best. Listen to Talib Kweli’s “In The Mood” or Dilated People’s “This Way”, both wonderfully produced by Kanye, and also featuring his vocals, and both ruined by Kanye’s verse. He’s not horrible, but he’s usually not good.

by miguelp on Apr 27, 2011 5:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Deltron 3030 is one of the greats.

Kanye West is is really good. It’s amazing people want to deny his talent, look at each album, each one is completely different, I’ve only seen one other group/artist reinvent themselves so many times (Cunninlynguists).

Rakim is the only one of those guys that could be in an all time top 5 list, or a legitimate one at least. To say that Del Tha Funkee Homosapien isn’t up for argument against people like 2Pac, Jay-Z, my GOAT Andre 3 Stacks, or even the man you referenced KRS-One (no that is not an exhaustive list or close)? Come on now.

And really, KRS-One is gospel when it comes to rap? So I’m supposed to believe 50 Cent is more “hip-hop” than Kanye West? I’m supposed to believe Lil’ Wayne is the best rapper alive because KRS-One says it?

KRS-One is not some all-knowing rap god. He is a legend that was relevant in his time but has been replaced by people who understand more about the youth today than he does.

J Cole is one of the most talented rappers to ever blow up in my opinion. Not the most talented, but to get to that level? There’s not many that compete just on pure ability (though he still needs to prove he can make a quality album instead of all these mixtapes).

Drake is so annoying. I really hate him, hate me for this but I’d rather just give in and act stupid and listen to Lil B. Cause that way I can at least just be stupid and have a fun time. Drake is just an annoying pretty boy

You ever wonder why Lil B can do songs with Jean Grae, Phonte, and 9th Wonder? Or why he can do a track with Cormega?

It’s because they understand what he is doing.

You can’t take him literally…although if you dig deep enough, he actually does have some really good songs.

He can go “legit” on songs like “Real Life”, and he can go “based” on songs like “Ellen Degeneres”.

No need to take him seriously, it’s not like anyone is claiming he is a good technical rapper, just that he’s bringing some much needed fun to hip-hop nowadays.

by belilaugh on Apr 27, 2011 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Yea I know I can't.

He treats himself like a joke. Still, I find it so hard to listen to anything he raps. It’s not fun to me lol

Exactly my thoughts.

Although I feel like he has only developed enough confidence to do his own thing recently. He was taking a LOT of style from Lil Wayne when he started getting his buzz (aka after So Far Gone).

But yeah, he honestly was not that unique when he started out, he sounded like a lot of other rappers besides the fact he could sing. His Degrassi ties really helped him out of the gate.

It’s whatever though, because he has gotten pretty good, so at least he’s done something productive with his partially undeserved success.
