Golden State of Mind: Issues Regarding Censorship on Posts
I have been a member of GSOM for a bit under a year now. I have really enjoyed reading the game-threads, giving my opinion on other fanposts, and posting comments while watching for the most part, great Golden State Warriors games along with my fellow fans.
Recently I have been seeing a trend of GSOM members fearing to post what they feel on their comments due to the fear of their posts being removed or even being kicked out of GSOM. Maybe some members feel such censorship is appropriate to keep this blog readable for all ages, while others feel censorship should not be allowed on GSOM. Golden State of Mind is a Forum about the Warriors, the NBA, their fans, and life in general. Let me know what you all think... (With whatever language you feel appropriate)
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

I think fans attacking fans is more of an issue. But there should be some sort of censorship on this blog because there’s no age filter. Anyone can read.
Agreed
At first it took a bit of constraint for me, but ultimately it makes for a much better read/conversation among fans.
However if there was a way to filter is to 18 and over, I don’t know if anyone would want to read my posts. They’d be littered with innuendo’s and filth only appropriate for men in smoke filled rooms in red satin robes.
My thoughts exactly.
Young ones won’t understand some more adult language, and I don’t we would want them to.

Of course, they also don’t spend much of their time actually discussing baseball.

actually they spend a lot more time talking baseball than we talk basketball here
maybe not ratio comparing totals, but overall there is a lot of stats/lineup discussion.

Sure, and also lots of off topic posts. The mods here do a very good job keeping all the talk here basketball related.
by Missing Barry on Apr 10, 2011 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions
That's why it's popular
Less censorship, freedom to talk, lots more sarcasm, and baseball. They do talk a lot of baseball, MCC is the site that helped me learn a lot more about advanced baseball stats. The community there loves graphics, albeit non-baseball and baseball haha.

Well I hope I helped in your education of advanced baseball stats at some point. ;) The site doesn’t really appeal much to me anymore, though.

Same.
Never on topic, and old meme’s and 2000 comment posts get annoying. I can’t even find decent discussion on the front page.

I'm not a Giants fan
but i have seen more hostile talk on MCC, but at the same time, more stat nerds.
GSoM might just be more tame, way more than the A’s blog.

*its all groupthink.
And all they do is keep bringing up lame old jokes like they’re all friends. No offense to those people but they don’t strike me as having much of a life (too far?). They joke around all the time. I signed up to talk about baseball and the occasional OT post ( i think some of it’s funny) but at some point i have friends in real life i can joke around with on facebook or skype and i just talk about sports on blogs.
It’s all stat guys and i like that to a degree but there is almost no disagreement on topics, so there really isn’t much discussion…

I’m just curious how you were able to “see” this trend? Can you read minds across the internet?

The last 3 or 4 game threads...
have had some cursing issues and other members have advised to stop or they might be kicked out. If you go back to those game threads, much of that content has been removed.

I totally agree.
But is the larger problem cursing at others, or just in general?
Like the lakers gamethread had some cursing but not member 2 member.

GSoM doesn’t allow cursing, in general.
by Missing Barry on Apr 10, 2011 5:24 PM PDT up reply actions
Right. The rule tends to be relaxed a bit in the game threads, but only a bit. If you occasionally drop a clever curse word, it can usually slip under the radar. If you draw attention to yourself by swearing repeatedly, you risk attracting the gaze of Sauron…

There will be no extra point!
by Sleepy Freud on Apr 10, 2011 5:52 PM PDT up reply actions
i disagree
profanity is nothing new in sports. i have yet to see someone really attack someone else, just mostly swearing out of frustration. its fine. if you really want to read something profane, go check out the game threads at athletics nation
It's lonely being the only Warriors fan at UMass :(
Also, this has been discussed numerous time with no responses from the site creators.
Some mods respond, but otherwise this won’t go anywhere lol.

they have booted people for grammar or spelling errors.
This is not true. Members have been banned for spamming threads, or repeatedly ignoring previous warnings (which may have been related to the quality of their writing) but you don’t get banned for making an error, you get banned for consistently not making an effort to follow the user guidelines.

They've "booted" people?
I’m not sure that’s the case.
In any event, certainly not for errors made despite a modicum of effort.

User Guidelines
I started working on an updated version of the User Guidelines a while ago, but I haven’t had time to get back to it unfortunately. The basics are:
*No swearing
*No personal attacks of any kind
*No racist/sexist/homophobic comments
*No trolling
*Put some effort into your writing
Generally if you fail to meet the guidelines you will receive a warning to help you identify the issue and hopefully correct it. If the problem persists we like to give folks the benefit of the doubt, so there will usually be a second warning. If the problem continues it will likely result in a ban, because we can’t really continue to clean up after a poster more than a few times without it becoming a waste of the staffs time.
I’m more than happy to explain any warnings, or answer any questions regarding moderation if anyone wants to send me an email (that can be found at the bottom of the page or if you click my username).

I hope that this never gets to be officially banned but some mods sure seam to have a strong agenda against it. GSOM readers have been deprived of some of my best material. Now I know what an Internet Bully is, thanks to GSOM! As long as the Warriors suck, please allow us a little comic relief.

Meh.
A lot of people don’t understand how poorly sarcasm translates over the internet. A lot of sarcasm from very talented writers ends up reading like a personal attack.
I suspect if you had sarcastic posts deleted it was primarily because they didn’t read as sarcastic.
As with any art form the beholder is half of the equation. Just because they don’t get it does not mean someone else won’t.
A lot of sarcasm from very talented writers ends up reading like a personal attack.
The best sarcasm is not the dumbed down variety that all the masses will get. Great sarcasm can be subtle. If it makes you feel stupid then you just probably are. This is not a “personal attack”.

Just because they don’t get it does not mean someone else won’t.
True, but in general, it seems that sarcasm fails more often than not in this medium. The context necessary for sarcasm is difficult to convey.
Perhaps people need a laugh-track to play in the background while they read. Apparently a lot of people need this just to know when to laugh for even the most slapstick TV humor.
sarcasm fails more often than not in this medium.
This is analogous to saying poetry fails in written form. It must be delivered orally in a smoke filled room to a stoned audience wearing sandals.
I write sarcasm for the those who will get it not those who won’t. At least I give everyone a chance.
This is a quote from Wikipedia’s definition of sarcasm:
Understanding the subtlety of this usage requires second-order interpretation of the speaker’s intentions. This sophisticated understanding can be lacking in some people with certain forms of brain damage, dementia and autism,11 and this perception has been located by MRI in the right parahippocampal gyrus.1213
There are also some good punctuation tips here on how to express sarcasm. Like using ؟ or ~ or putting the phrase in italics, but to me this would only spoil the intended humor. The humor should force the reader to reconsider the intent of the writer and ultimately resonate with the readers soul. I fully understand that some will be left confused.

Again, you’re missing the point – although at this point I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.
Maybe you’re young, or maybe you’re just not that experienced with online communities. And I’m telling you: sarcasm often doesn’t work. It has nothing to do with the intelligence of the writer or the reader.
If you’re getting your posts deleted, I’m willing to wager it’s because you’re doing a poor job communicating sarcasm, not that people are misunderstanding it because they’re not smart enough.
