Who do you think will and won't be a Warrior at the start of next season?

so...how's this work

If they buy out Bell’s contract, does he still count against the cap? Or does that just free up another roster spot?

umm

“Stephen Curry (2 more years, $7 million): Curry failed to build on his productive rookie season, but there’s no doubt he’s still the biggest part of the Warriors’ future. The Warriors are hoping a little break from basketball, followed by a commitment in the weight room will result in Curry being stronger and more effective next season.

This is where credibility is lost.

I think it’s totally fair to say Curry didn’t really build on his rookie season. He didn’t particularly regress, but neither did he blow up the way most of us hoped after witnessing the second half of his rookie season. There may be some legit excuses for this (the ankle issues to start the year, lack of consistent playing time throughout, too much Monta on ball, e.g.) but Steinmetz doesn’t speculate about this. He does say, “there’s no doubt he’s still the biggest part of the Warriors’ future,” which I obviously agree with.

Where a bit of credibility is lost, imo, is in this statement:

Ellis had the best individual season of his Warriors career in 2010-11.

I can only presume he’s a big devotee of PPG, or was sleeping throughout much of ’07-08.

07-08 / 10-11 per 36
19.2 / 21.5 pts
.580 / .536 ts
4.7 / 3.1 reb
3.7 / 5.0 ast
2.0 / 2.8 tov
+4.9 / -6.2 net plus minus

There will be no extra point!

Actually

You can plug TCG at the backup 3 slot for a different offensive look than Dorell.

Keith Smart was just a moron when it came to minutes, Reggie should have played more and Monta should have played less, quite simply.

Instead you had Monta playing 40 minutes of horrible basketball and put in TCG at the 3/4 slot and the only time Reggie got minutes was when Steph was in foul trouble.

I’d much rather trade Monta for Bynum

Well, clearly, but you gotta give to get, right? Curry’s elite perimeter skills (and cheap price tag) make him a picture-perfect fit for that team. Monta/Kobe is a much less natural combo, in terms of $$$ and game.

If I’m the Lakeshow, I could definitely see trying to unload Bynum or Gasol’s contract for a young, cheap stud PG / shooter like Curry (plus an expiring), and going hard after Dwight next summer. Imagine

Curry
Kobe
Odom
Bynum or Gasol
Howard

Yikes.

OK, let’s not give LA Curry.

There will be no extra point!

by Sleepy Freud on May 7, 2011 10:19 AM PDT up reply actions

It's not really an option under current cba though

There best bet at Howard is basically a sign and trade with Bynum. Him forcing it, that is.

If Bynum, Odom and Artest opt out (the last 1 certainly won’t) they are still committed to 46 million with Kobe/Gasol alone. Not to mention Blake and Walton are due a combine 10 mil in 2012/13, guaranteed.

But then again, we’ve found out general rules and CBA don’t apply to the Lakers.

by tafkasam on May 7, 2011 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions

But Bynum

gets hurt way too much. He goes down we basically gave away Curry for nothing and have a huge whole at PG. Monta isnt a PG, although he did show improvement this season but Curry is a way better pg than Ellis. I would hate seeing my fav player in a Laker uniform

So here is the interesting thing

It’s a two way argument:

10 years ago, you don’t make this trade. Because there are good centers and you can find someone elsewhere. Today, behind Howard, Bynum is clearly best center. You can make a case, Bynum at top of his form is comparable too. I mean he has owned Howard more than once this year. As good as he is, he can be so much better (see Dallas series, he’s only guy showing up). Having a legitimate all-star caliber center can turn a team with little talent into a 50 win team (see: Orlando)

On the flip side, there really is a shortage of good 2 way centers. They aren’t necessarily required. Chicago, Boston (with perk), Dallas are all very capable teams with just a defensive 10/10 type center. Where as getting production like Curry’s is obviously key to winning (plus his upside)

I’m not sure how I feel. Obviously this is kind of move where you better have 2-3 moved planned ahead of time to cover.

If we did Steph and Biedrins for Bynum (or really, Biedrins contract elsewhere for spacE) can we sign stuckey to play next to monta? Can we actually try monta at PG experiment, and get someone like Shaw to run the triangle? Bring in Afllalo? Could a Monta, Afflalo, Dorell, Lee, Bynum lineup get far?

by tafkasam on May 7, 2011 10:50 AM PDT up reply actions

If you move Gasol to center, he's 2nd best center behind Howard too.

But you give up a lot of defensive end

Which you don’t with Bynum.

That said if Udoh becomes the player he’s supposedly trying to be. Udoh/Gasol isn’t so bad.

by tafkasam on May 7, 2011 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions

Gasols really good defensively too.

He can’t guard guys like Dirk but he can guard the big fellas. And Udoh and Gasol would be a nice fit.

Gasol is a solid defender but has weaknesses

He’s got length, he guard’s post well, he has good positioning.

But he does get exposed in space and overpowered.

I like Gasol/Udoh idea. I’d prefer Biyumbo :). Or really the concept of Biyumbo. Superior length, quickness, rebounding, aggressiveness.

by GovernorStephCurry on May 7, 2011 11:52 AM PDT up reply actions

That's just wishful thinking

I could see them intrigued by Monta though for a variety of reasons

1) triangle doesn’t require a real PG, so he could play it
2) Kobe likes him a lot
3) He loves Kobe and would defer to him.
4) they are probably looking for someone to take offensive load off Kobe’s hands for stretches.

It could work really well. It could also horrendously backfire

by tafkasam on May 7, 2011 12:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I know Lee + Monta for Gasol or Bynum.

But Gasol’s value is low and probably will demand trade away from Kobe after he cheated on his girl.

I'm curious how the details play out

I’m also curious what the market for Gasol would be.

Could see Chicago (a team with a lot of assets) pursuing heavily. Deng + Boozer for Gasol/ArtesT?

by tafkasam on May 7, 2011 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

But Lakers probably figure out that makes Chicago a much better team and therefore no shot for LAkers to win title.

True

But Deng/Boozer is an overall upgrade.

Deng is a better defender, shooter and rebounder than RonRon

But eitherway, my point is Pau will garner a lot of interest.

by tafkasam on May 7, 2011 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Today, behind Howard, Bynum is clearly best center.

This is where you lose me.

Bynum is really really good, but on the other hand he doesn’t shoot that much.

I think you, realistically, have to talk about him of being in a group of very good centers including Zach Randolph, Marcus Camby, Nene, and Tyson Chandler.

Of those players, he’s the only one that plays in a system designed to maximize one-on-one post-up opportunities, so it not surprising that he appears to have the best post moves. He’s also, however, the one of whom the least is required, night in and night out. Because he plays with Gasol and Odom, Bynum can take a night off and nobody really notices. And I don’t just mean by being injured – sometimes he doesn’t really seem to show up, mentally.

Nonsense.

In many ways, his game is more center-like than Marc Gasol’s.

I think the tandem of Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph make a great argument that the distinction between “power forward” and “center” is often meaningless.

Yep, I’m still of the “a big is a big” mentality. What’s important is your bigs combine to give you the variety of things you want out of your big men. Who does what, specifically, just doesn’t matter much.

by Missing Barry on May 8, 2011 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes and no

You do need a player who can legitimately protect the rim though. This player is typically close to (or over) 7feet tall, and usually classified as a center.

ZBo is not this player. Just because he played a center’s game offensively doesn’t mean him + DLee would work. Gasol=center

by tafkasam on May 8, 2011 5:22 PM PDT up reply actions

There are plenty of guys who are more typically profile as “PF’s” who do a good job of protecting the rim. Guys like Wright, Randolph, Udoh, and Turiaf are all recent examples from our own franchise. I’d say Ibaka is another example. I think it’s an important thing you need, too, but it’s not particularly important which player provides it.

by Missing Barry on May 8, 2011 6:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Do you think David Lee can play center?

I'd like to play channing frye and Josh Smith together :)

I wonder if Atlanta gets bounced if they’d consider some sort of gortat + dudley for Smith swap with Phoenix. Could be beneficial for both sides.

And really just the thought of Josh Smith in phoenix system with Nash just gets me excited to watch. Even though he’ll end up posterizing all-star Lee a few times

by tafkasam on May 9, 2011 9:31 AM PDT up reply actions

They are not centers

I don[‘t agree. I think there’s a big difference between being a center for stretches (ie randolph, wright, udoh, etc.) and actually doing it for 30+ mpg.

Name one team who’s been successful with this type of player at Center outside Amare? And we know those phoenix teams were a gimmick, trying to mismatch and push tempo. Didn’t even get them to a title though, because they were ultimately too small and top tier teams weren’t forced into there style.

by tafkasam on May 8, 2011 7:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn’t call them centers.

What’s important is your bigs combine to give you the variety of things you want out of your big men. Who does what, specifically, just doesn’t matter much.

by Missing Barry on May 8, 2011 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly.

MB basically just made my point.

The “center” is almost invariably the one of your two bigs who guards the opponent’s bigger big. Usually that guy is taller. Not always.

ZBo can't guard centers.

I think it goes both ways

Bynum also doesn’t get nearly as many touches as he should considering how good a post scorer he is.

The last two years he’s put up 17.8 points per 36 on great efficiency. He has a strong case to get more touches to me. That’s second among centers.

He also provides great defense and rebounds well.

by tafkasam on May 8, 2011 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't want to trade Stephen Curry for Stephanie Blake

Though Keith would like this. It’s basically all he thought of Curry. “floor spacer” to give monta room to ‘do him’

I don’t like it persay. But if we dumped Biedrins and got Nene, i could get behind a Nene, Odom, Lee, Udoh front court rotation.

by GovernorStephCurry on May 7, 2011 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions

hmm

Odom’s all around game is superior. Gasol is a better scorer but Odom can score, he just doesn’t have mindset to really be a guy who will give you more than 15.

That said, best passing big man since CWebb, rebounds better than Gasol, defensively he is up there with best PF in NBA. He has 2 years left, 1 if u don’t want to pick up his option so it’s a half salary dump too….

I need to find fanpost on silverscreen and roll. It was about trading Gasol for Carmelo. Beyond the idiocy of it, they had interesting numbers on why Odom/Bynum is there best front court. Mostly related to defensive rebounding and defensive rating. And they drew a tangential argument Carmelo averages almost exact same offensive rebounds as Gasol so the one major edge he has on Bynum/Odom is negated. Eitherway it made me really re-consider Odom’s value on that end of the floor

By the way, did you see the stat during game 2? Dirks fg% v. Odom, v. Gasol.
v. odom- 35%
v. Gasol- 53%

When Lakers lose, I hope someone in the media has balls to blast Phil. Odom should have been on him from first minute and all game. Instead of just small stretches.

Basically for putting up with Keith Smart.

I can almost see Lakers offering Bynum for Curry; because this year, right now
Gasol, Odom, Bynum isn’t working. Besides Kobe no other backcourt players can go an get their own shot. Curry does this well.
