Atlanta Hawks to Trade J. Smith
I don't care that he can't shoot 3's well, that David Lee is a 4, and he can't play the 3. We need to go after him. Play Lee at the 5 if need be. Take back a bad contract if we need to. Trade our pick and Ekpe.

Well, “Atlanta to trade JSmith” is an exaggeration of the what the article says (“Hawks assess trade interest in Smith”). I know it makes for a catchy headline, but still.
Lee for Smith straight up sounds good to me. If you twisted my arm, I’d probably even do Monta and Lee for Smith and Hinrich.
There will be no extra point!
Iggy or Josh Smith?

tbh iggy.
i think in terms of need, we need a bigger backcourt if we can. because we already have d.lee, i think jsmith would just be an asset. however, if dlee were to leave, then i would say jsmith or even beans leaving.

If only we could get both. The idea of a 2-3-4 lineup of Iggy-DWright-JSmith is downright mouthwatering. Lee for Smith, Monta for Iggy. Ok, daydream time is over.

Josh Smith is overated because unlike Lee we don't see him night in and night out.
What he brings, defense, toughness, scoring, highlights. Much better shot blocker than Lee.
But what he also brings: ball hog, thinks he can shoot when he cannot, is not a great passer or rebounder. Thinks he is a three.
Lee brings similar scoring numbers – both avg. 16-18 pts game over. Lee is a better rebounder. Lee is a better passer. Lee is a team leader and great character guy – not sure if the same is true for Smith. Knows he is a four, plays within himself. Gets slightly more offensive rebounds than Smith which might surprise people.
I like Smith but also think we undervalue Lee around here. I think Lee will play better defense under Mike Malone. I also think that without a true and decent center, both Smith and Lee would suffer. You could make the case for either guy.
exactly.
i think dlee has way more potential to be better here then anywhere simply because dlee and curry have already developed a relationship. i mean before he was hurt, dlee was playing like an allstar and near the end of the year, dlee’s defense wasnt so bad either.
what the real problem with dlee was his running mate beans. dlee essentially was playing both pf and center. the warriors had many man-to-man problems and dlee was essentially guarding both positions at times. once we have a good center to play, i think dlee would shine SO bright. people here i think seriously look at contract-then stats and equate dlee as a bust.
i really think let curry/lee/wright/and heck even monta grow for another year, we will have something special.
i also wonder why we dont even include dwright in trade talks either. i mean he is pretty attractive as a trade package if needed.

agreed
Also, Josh Smith without Horford would struggle because Horford is so good one on one as a defender, it allows Smith to rack up blocks playing off the weak side. They make a great combo because Smith is a better team defender than a one on one guy.
Lee needs a shot blocking machine at center to help hoim when he gets beat, but Lee is gritty and tough enough to bang with guys for a bit. In addition, Lee suffers from having poor wing defenders, so when Monta or Curry get beat too quickly Lee doesn’t have time to assert defensive position allowing the offensive player to make Lee look bad.
Finally, I would be surprised to see Wright moved because he is a favorite of the team brass and gives us a good return on the dollar. In addition, he is going to continue to improve as a ball handler and will play better defense in Mike malone’s system (and hopefully shoot a bit less). However, if we draft Tristan Thomas I could see it happening.

yeah i agree too,
the point about dorell is that he is a good trade commodity. like if we wanted to sweeten any deal including beans, we can always add dorell because of his potential. teams around the league all thought dorell was a good surprise, so maybe the call-order for trades can go like curry, monta, dorell, etc.

Was thinking something similar.
Dorell is a very good value & the only way I think the Dubs can unload Beans.
Beans + Dorell —> Hinrich + filler
Replace Beans w/ player who expires 2 years faster.
Not a great passer?
He can handle the ball in the open court and dish off the dribble. Lee cant do that.
whaaaaaat
Smith is a MUCH better passer than Lee..and Lee is not a good rebounder, he doesn’t box-out either.
Their career A/TO numbers are comparable, with Lee’s slightly better (1.25 compared to 1.23 for Smith), although I’d agree that Smith is the better playmaker.
I don’t think you can make the argument that Lee is not a good rebounder. You COULD make the argument that his rebounds are “empty”, though I don’t think that’s conclusive.

Smith is MUCH better passer?
Lee makes great passes out of the post, he also is quick to give it up to another big man in the post (if one exists). Smith is a better ball handler and passer off the dribble. For their career, Lee averages 3.2 assists per game, Smith averages 2.9. They are both good passing big men, but excel at passing in different ways.
Also, on a team like ours which is already turnover prone, I’ll take Lee’s average of 1.7 over Smith’s 2.6 per game.
Lee ranked 7th in the league in rebounds per game, Smith ranked 15th. But go ahead an keeping telling yourself that Lee cannot rebound.

Lee doesn't box-out
To me that means that he can’t rebound. Boxing out is the essential skill to have as a rebounder..Lee doesn’t have/do that. So to me he can’t rebound. Numbers shnumbers.
how many warriors box-out? I am sensing that might change this year hopefully
by chupamelapolla on Jun 21, 2011 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions
Boxing out is becoming more and more irrelevant as players become quicker. Jim Barnett mentions this all the time, that players these days are just too quick to be able to box out. You have to be able to beat your man to the ball. That being said, Lee does box out when he can and he’s a pretty good rebounder. I don’t get SDtotheBay’s assessment that he doesn’t box out. Do you have evidence that proves this or are you just saying it because the times you’ve seen him get beat to the ball stick out the most?

This is amazing to me. In determining whether Lee is a good rebounder, you’re ok with dismissing the admitted fact that… he’s a good rebounder?
Here’s another one: “To me, the sky is green. I don’t care if everyone’s eyes say it’s blue; an essentiality of the sky is that it’s green. Eyes shmeyes.”

Lee and Smith are both
among the best passing power forwards in the league. Like 1 and 2 in no particular order.

i would put them as pretty equal or slightly behind
players like diaw, kg, pau, and horford (if you consider him a PF)
+1
It would suck to get rid of one guy who takes too many long 2’s without moving the ball around, and replace him right away with a guy who essentially has the same problems

so....
upon reading further on the article it talks about the pacers thinking about getting the 2nd pick from minny that would include a package of hibbert + the 15th pick…… you think there’s anyway we could get a 3 way trade and land roy hibbert? would you guys even want hibbert? just wondering.
I love me some Roy Hibbert

i LOVE j smoove at the 3
what’s not to like? he can play point forward, he’s a very good passer, and it the position he’s most talented at defending 1-on-1. if you put Smith at the 3, Lee at the 4, and Udoh at the 5, you’re in good shape; Udoh’s poor rebounding is made up for Lee and Smith’s above average rebounding, and Lee’s poor defense is made up for by Udoh and Smith’s above average defense. plus, then you either have Dorell Wright coming off the bench to light it up or, if we trade Monta, Wright moves over to the 2, giving us a starting lineup where only Curry is below the league-average height. Yet all 5 players are decently athletic (can you imagine Udoh and Smith converging in the lane for some help-side D, and then running the wings with Curry pushing the ball and Wright trailing? I’m drooling.

Don't want J. Smith with David Lee already on Warriors.
If I could choose one player, I’d choose J. Smith. However, with Lee & his salary already on the Warriors, prefer not to add 12M to the same position. Unless Smith is capable of playing Center defensively.
