I hate this pick

We could of had Burks (who just went to the jazz) or Kawhi Leonard!

Agreed. Any kind of Larry Riley headed war room should be questioned.

yeah! let's go Klay!!

would have much rather drafted BPA, or a position of need, but I’m hoping the FO knows what they’re doing.

Whatever, he’s a Warriors now, let’s welcome him!!

Again, still don't get this.

Exactly what has Riley screwed up so bad? He picked Curry and Udoh. Only Udoh over Monroe is the somewhat debatable move.

Who the hell are you to say that about Larry? Easy for you to say blogging all the time, but he is very good at his job and the new ownership knows he is. These new owners are very, very smart guys and would’ve canned Larry if they think he was competent and able to run the team this year. I’ll trust their judgement over your invalid opinion any day.

If ownership talked with Law at all I wouldn’t be surprised if he is in camp this season. He is actually a very engaging, smart player that coaches and scouts covet. Plus, he is not as bad of a player as everyone on this blog says he is, a fifth guard with a pass first mentality and leadership qualities is nothing to scoff at.

They DID get bigger!

Just not at the 4 or 5 as you’re assuming. The W’s got bigger at the 2 in a very good way.

People compare Klay to Reggie Williams, and honestly, when it comes to offense it’s easy to see why when you watch him roll off screens and square up to shoot.

If Klay is 80% of the player Reggie was, wouldn’t he be a STEAL at 11??!?!?!

I think many of the risks taken in front of the W’s are going to severely bust, and I’m not seeing anybody after 11 that seems like a sure fire player.

I think Klay would have been a smart pick all the way up to 6.

I don't know why we need to trade Ellis just because we drafted Thompson

Thompson is a rookie, and should not have full time playing time this year. He should come off the bench, earning his minutes as time goes. As Thompson develops, this gives the warriors options….

They can shift Ellis to point to give Curry rest, and bring Thompson off the bench. Ellis can sit and Thompson can play the 2,…

When you suck like the Warriors, you need talent. Monroe has talent. He showed us he can rebound, pass (not well yet), and score efficiently. Give him a couple of years for his defense to kick in (he was drafted at 20 as opposed to 23 year old Udoh).

LOVE THE PICK

Seriously, watching tape and his workouts, how is this guy any worse than Evan Turner? And he went #2 last year.

This guy has the bloodlines, so he knows how he can get better…and he fits our need perfectly…we didn’t need another forward…a bigger 2 guard that can spell Monta, I don’t know who has a prettier shot, Curry or Thompson. AND he can defend at the 2.

Great pick for the Warriors, we’re going to be loving him like we love Curry now.

Can’t believe how many people are whining for the value at the #11 pick…every other guy after him is going to be a good rotation player – Klay has a chance to become a starter. You don’t trade down when none of the picks are sure bets…@ 11 the Warriors got who they wanted, and filled a hole

I just don’t know how he fits on this team. Tim Kawakami seems to think that the Dubs are ok with keeping these 3 guys on the roster this year. While that may be an OK idea to let Klay Thompson develop that doesn’t solve our biggest problems: our frontcourt and defense.

It’s not so much that this was a bad player for our team, it’s just that we didn’t address any holes. A trade NEEDS to happen. Not because of a “crowded backcourt” but so that we don’t suck at everything else.

Great Pick

Klay Thompson will be the most efficient scorer in this draft.
He will play sometimes at the 2, sometimes at the 3 (as the roster currently stands; speculation about roles ASSUMING monta is traded is premature) in a small lineup.
He’s a GREAT mid-range shooter, hard worker, good attitude. this was one of the two good options (I gotta say that I was surprised Leonard was still available, and would’ve been tempted), and at least they didn’t draft one of the Morris twins, who are both on their way to unspectacular careers as backup bigmen.
Glad that Thompson was here, and we didn’t have to settle on Burks. Love this pick, and now hoping they target a solid backup big like Jordan Williams or Keith Benson in the second round….

Has nothing to do with Clay Thompson. Has to do with what this team needs, by priority.

Fact is, Curry is a converted 2. Ellis is a 2. Reggie is a 2/3. We do not have a “pure” point guard! We need to get a center. We need more depth at the power forward. Unless this pick is part of a trade strategy, I do not get it.

I think that

defensive stats in regards to the 2-3 is misleading when it comes to college. He was Washington State’s only real offensive threat. It could have been a consorted effort to save his fouls and energy for the offensive side of the ball. That is just a hypothetical as I have nothing to back that up with.

Look, I would have loved to got a 4-5 with premier defensive skills; I just didn’t see anyone available at 11 that fits that mold. There has to be something in the works because the Warriors cannot go into the 2011 season with a combination of Wright, Monta, Thompson and Williams at the 2-3

Dear Warrior fans - relax.

Kawhi slipped for a reason! Notice that other teams passed on him too.
I would have liked Kawhli but Klay isn’t bad either. Not a huge fan of Reggie or Burks. By the way, for those of you bummed we didn’t get Burks but also bummed we picked Klay while we have Monta- that makes no sense. Burks is a taller, slower, lesser version of Monta. Klay is different from both. He is a 2/3 and he’ll be running off screens all day like Reggie Miller did with Mark Jackson. When we have to play half court we have someone better than Monta at the two spot.
Nobody at 11 was going to be Michael Jordan. Also, stop hating on Riley, he made the pick West wanted. If we had made a pick everyone liked somehow I think we’d all be praising West and not Riley.
Finally, heed the lessons from last hear – we all hated on Udoh pick and now he is our best defender.
Finally, and let me be the first to say it – Let Klay Smoke!

Dude, what are you about 12 years old? You don;t think West knows what he’s doing? we just added size to the back court with a better gun that Monta….this pick is solid gold…

We now need to get a free agent, Mark G or Nene…..I can’t believe we even got Klay, this guy will be a star without a doubt…..you can quote me on that ;))

also, explain to me how we get a free agent center who’s worth a damn when all we have to offer is the MLE. go ahead, i’ll wait

Hmmm

Imo, Biedrins’ lack of production effected us very significantly last year. I think with a 2008-2009 Biedrins we at least make an interesting fight for the 8th seed, 45+ wins.

beans was better

when he had guys who could penetrate and find him for a dunk, and better perimiter defenders since he’s not the greatest at protecting the rim (he’s ok, but not great). so it’s not just him for the reason i think 40 wins, but also the makeup of the team. now switch out monta for iggy and have beans return to form and then i’d be more inclined to agree

We can now look for the big’s we need, also if we took your attitude two years ago we would of never drafted Curry!!

Leonard is a good scorer. He’s not exactly Mark Price out there, but he can shoot. He’s certainly not in the category with Biedrins, who shouldn’t shoot from outside the charging circle.

by taliesin on Jun 24, 2011 9:41 AM PDT up reply actions

but he can shoot.

ok, I just thought maybe I’d go with what I read in draft express about the guy, but maybe you know more about it

Leonard’s 0.889 points per possession overall ranks third worst of the 17 wings we evaluated, and his adjusted field goal percentage of 46.3% ranks dead last, a strong illustration of his scoring woes.

I watched quite a bit of SDSU

He can shoot, but he took a lot of ill-advised threes (including one on a key possession against UConn in the tourney) that brought down his FG%. He was decent inside the arc, but I believe he shot something like 29% from three, which is like Antoine Walker level futility. I’m sort of trusting that anybody who tries to do that for Pop’s team won’t be playing.

Man - the overreactors!

Jeez people. Klay and Tristan Thomson were the two players that CLEARLY moved up the board the past 2 weeks. KLAY is a legit pick that’s ready to contribute to the team NOW.

This is no Todd Fuller type pick – so stop acting like it.

To me this kid seems like 6’ 7" Steph Curry. That’s not a bad thing in my book.

W’s keep Monta and bring Klay off the bench until they see how is – possibly making Monta expendable — good thing! Worst case, he’s bench depth at a position that the W’s don’t have a player at.

W’s trade Monta and bring in a J-Rich type to hold the 2 spot and groom Klay – good thing!

This is good all around.

Seriously – was there a single player at 11 that would be better than david lee, dorell or even ekpe???

Get perspective, take a deep breath, a hope for a basketball season.

Hofstra’s Charles Jenkins is the sleeper of this draft. The 6-3 senior is regarded as one of the country’s best mid-major talents, and was the CAA’s Player of the Year for two straight seasons, but few were aware of just how dominant of a scorer he really was. On numbers alone, he’s more impressive than any other scoring guard who’s in contention for the first round, because he offers the rare combination of high efficiency in both ISO and spot-up situations.

Klay has the highest ceiling of any guard in the draft not named Kyrie. Additionally, the Warriors bought a player that would have been a top ten picks before he made the dumbest decision of his life (Tyler)

Going overseas

and thinking that he could avoid not only college, but his senior year in High School and dominate in a competitive continent. He was extremely young at the time and it didn’t work out. If he had decided to go to college and play a single season (Irving), he would have been a top 10 pick.

I was talking about before he went overseas; I think he was 16 at the time, not 100 percent sure.

I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but Jenkins is also a shooting guard!

He is actually more efficent than Thompson, at the same position! So, we now have a slew of shooting, #2, guards, and not one bonafide “pure” point guard! OK! You guys make sense out of all this, because I sure as heck do not see how we got stronger with any of these moves where we are the weakest: Center and Power Forward. Unless, all this is future trade potential, we are now eakest at point guard! Remember, also, that you will not run through everyone in the west with a bunch of rookies!

Seems likely that our big-men starters will be Udoh and Lee.

Unless we bring in a FA, or Beans really turns it around in the preseason.

Barring a Biedrins resurgence, Tyler’s still going to have to beat out Amundson for the backup big minutes.

That being said, if eveyrone’s healthy and Tyler’s getting 15MPG a month into the season, that’s a really good sign.

The 6’11" 263 pound Tyler is a San Diego native who was a highly recruited high school junior a few year’s ago but decided to forego his senior year. He then broke his commitment to Louisville, and decided to play overseas. Tyler had become somewhat forgotten in this year’s draft, but could turn into a top-notch big man who’s a bit under the radar as of now. I think it’s a great move by the front office and is just more proof that the Warriors are putting their money where their mouth is when it comes to making the team better.

Tyler has been labeled an immature guy that lets his emotions get away from him from time to time, especially since he didn’t even attempt to go to college or even finish high school. He’s definitely is a bit of a gamble on behalf of the W’s but if his raw skills can develop in the NBA could be a great player in the league for a long time.

Tweet from Jenkins
Thank u to the Golden State Warriors I’m very excited to be apart of a great team and play in a beautiful city

Or he could just be being polite?

I’m sure his new bosses would just love it if his first tweet was “Damn, I got drafted to a shitty team who haven’t done anything in nearly 20 years?”

Some guns are back in Golden State… just realized how big Jenkins’ arms are.

Been missing them guns since Gilbert, Azubuike, and Maggette have been gone.

Jenkins is a poor man's Eric Gordon.

Not as long, but physical as hell. He can play 2 guard in the NBA.

Jenkins

is a better shooter than Stuckey.

Stuckey isn’t much of a shooter though.

by WYK on Jun 23, 2011 8:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Isn’t he a good shooter?

All of you guys that speak so highly of the Tyler pic, have not seen him play overseas as I have.

He should have stayed in school, and gotten some next level experience. I will give him the benefit of the doubt, and say, at best, he is a “project.”. So, let’s see what we have done in this draft so far. We passed up on some quality big men such as Leonard, Singleton, Morris, and Vecevi, and used our #11 pick to get Thompson, when in fact, later, we picked Jenkins who is another shooting guard, more efficient than Thompson! I sure hope that there is some trade strategy and agenda, or else, we are royally scr——ing this draft up!

by dinohealth on Jun 23, 2011 8:51 PM PDT reply actions

He should play in Reno for a while.

At this stage

I think teams are just chucking shit against a wall.

by Black Wire on Jun 23, 2011 8:52 PM PDT reply actions

Meanwhile, potentially solid guys like David Lighty are gonna get left undrafted.

by WYK on Jun 23, 2011 8:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I wanted Lighty to get drafted, He’ll have a shot in the D-League or overseas.

by J-RIDAH on Jun 23, 2011 8:57 PM PDT up reply actions

going undrafted is not the worst thing

if you can prove yourself, you get paid more than most of your draft class in your 2nd year

by bigkino217 on Jun 23, 2011 9:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Indeed. However, for a lot of good, solid players this will be their last solid shot at making the league. Attempting to make the league on a bunch of non-guaranteed contracts isn’t exactly easy.

They’re just messing with the ESPN crew now…

by Black Wire on Jun 23, 2011 8:55 PM PDT reply actions

Jenkins will make the team. I cant see him not making it. He’ll be our backup point guard.
