Now that I've watched more film on Klay Thompson, I see him as a long 2 that can do just about everything that Curry can do (though not as smooth) but who has the size to play serviceable if not possibly good team defense against 2 guards. Plus he plays better off the ball. Everybody keeps talking about trading Monta, but I see Thompson as being a much better complement to Monta's game than Curry's. It's basically like eliminating Monta's defensive deficiency by letting him guard 1's (which he can do decently), as well as increasing the offensive lethality of the backcourt by replacing a player who is better on the ball (Curry) with one who does the same things but is better off the ball (Thompson) . Couple that with all the talk about how excited Mark Jackson is to coach Monta (has he made any phone calls to Curry?), and I'd say this whole situation reeks of making Curry expendable.
I agree with the rest of GSOM, though, that Curry wouldn't be traded for some average player like an Iguodala or an Al Jefferson. Instead, I believe early rumors may have been onto something when they suggested the Warriors going after Dwight Howard. It seems pretty obvious after the Nuggets took cues from Lebron's departure and turned an unhappy Carmelo into a pretty nice trade package that a Dwight Howard sweepstakes is going to start picking up speed once the new CBA is reached. I believe that pieces may be getting moved into place to create an attractive offer to Orlando for Dwight once the dust settles. Buying the rights to Jeremy Tyler from Charlotte seems to support this notion, as a young big with NBA size and tremendous upside on a second-round contract is a very attractive piece to throw into a trade package to acquire an All-NBA center. I also believe that Dwight could see potential in pairing with David Lee in the front court, especially with what I believe would theoretically still be an elite back court in Ellis and Thompson, especially if Thompson plays up to Jerry West's expectations. Add a serviceable 3 in Dorrell Wright and some rim-protecting relief from Udoh to keep Dwight out of foul trouble, I definitely see a team with deep playoff and possibly even championship potential that could be very attractive to Dwight, in the NBA's 6th largest media market with a huge and loyal fanbase that can potentially offer an unbelievable amount of star power to a true star who is willing to take advantage of it.
I haven't taken into consideration how the money works out, but that won't really matter until a new CBA is reached anyway. I know there is a heavy flow of support for Curry in the GSOM community and people don't trust Monta as a PG, but I don't think his efficiency would be anywhere near as bad with a low post threat like Dwight and I believe a new offensive scheme would necessarily develop around him in which Monta could potentially flourish as a scoring/drive-and-dish PG. And before you rip me apart for mentioning trading Curry, please remember I'm saying as part of a trade package for DWIGHT HOWARD, and I am only suggesting this because I think he would make a much more attractive bargaining chip than Monta. This is my first post so please... be gentle.
