please name one
former player and long time analyst who had no coaching experience and then became a good head coach?
kevin mchale!
While you sit here typing some witty response, Bruce Bochy, world champion, is smiling from above.
That's the number one question...
…but I will remain optimistic. I did like Jackson as a player and the teams he played for were pretty good. Clearly he knows the game. Despite the fact that he was never a video coordinator like Spoelstra (was he?), he has an intimate knowledge of the NBA game that you simply can’t get unless you played. Heck, he probably still knows most of the refs on a first-name basis.
Beyond that, it gives the Warriors a name and an instant identity. Anybody who knew Mark Jackson as a player remembers him. That automatically gives the Warriors a face and an attitude.

yes marc jackson does have knowledge of the game amongst his blatant homerism on TV
he and charles barkley were the main reasons behind the five second back to basket rule. go back and find tape of them in the late 80’s early 90’s and you’ll see them working their man down from free throw line and beyond all the way to the paint to get and easy shot

A good comparison in terms of the types of players they were at least. that eases the pain a bit.

Was an assistant coach for two years
after leaving the broadcast booth, then became head coach. Actually, at first he was co-head coach with Jerry West, then West bowed out.

Doc Rivers, although the caveat we just discussed in that other thread was that he didn’t become a good head coach until he had Garnett, Ray Allan, and Thibodeau.
Thus my plan: exercise extreme patience for the next 9 years, at which time we’ll finally land a couple of superstars and win a championship.
Formerly ffgolden.
here is the problem I have with that argument
great players win – no doubt.
but many coaches have had great teams and players and were not a success, that is until they got the boot and the right coach came along – and yet, credit goes usually to the players.
you need great players and at least a good coach
or
you need a super coach and at least good players
both sides deserve credit

generally the idea is
a coach can’t make a bad team good, but a coach can make a good team bad.
Thus my plan: exercise extreme patience for the next 9 years
Considering how the coaching turnover rate for this franchise is around 2 years, there’s no way Jackson would be around by then…

I dunno
I just really, really wanted Budenholzer, so now I’m going to sulk. This is starting to make all of these recent big FO additions seem more like publicity and PR moves rather than the strategic building of a championship team. We’ll probably get another Christmas game now at least.

Instant fit into our system with the ability to make gradual defensive improvements on the team, all while running a tight ship that would be well received by our younger players, including our superstar. Long tenure under the great coach who just took old timers and young bench into the best record in the West. I think he’s by far the best assistant available, and if he were ever to be handed a junker to rebuild, ours or Phoenix most closely resemble what he’s been working with for years.

I really like the move
At first I was like, “WTF Mark Jackson???” but then the more I think about it the more I like it. I guess the whole thing with bringing in Myers/West and now this, ownership is showing that they’re committed to making bold moves to bring this franchise back to respectability.
Swinging for the fences with a risky move instead of making the “safe choice so no one in the front office gets axed if it doesn’t work out” is a big departure from what the Warriors have been for so long, it’s a breath of fresh air to say the least.

Exactly how I felt
First reaction: “What why?! Mark Jackson sucks!”
Second reaction: “Well actually, this could be good. He’s unproven and could become a really good coach. I’m actually starting to like this.”
Final thought: “Who cares, it’s not like coaches actually matter that much. The Warriors need a center.”

Final thought
About 5 minutes after the news broke, I thought “wow I guess this really means Monta is getting traded this summer.” West already foreshadowed it a bunch in his press conference awhile back, but this move has gotta mean the front office wants big changes, and moving Monta would be one of them.
Now it’s just a matter of:
1. Trade Monta, draft Klay Thompson to replace him
2. Keep Monta, draft Chris Singleton
We’ll see what happens, not sure I really like either one, but I guess I’m leaning towards Singleton at this point

Why Klay?
He has terrible defense.
Trade Monta, draft Singleton.

Yeah Klay can't defend squat
He’s like a 6’7 Steph with less handle
Who do we start at the 2 then, whoever we get for Monta in a trade? Whoever it is he’s not going to be that great (O.J Mayo level or lower) Not a fan of moving DWright over to the 2, I guess we platoon him and Singleton at the 3?
I’m just worried Singleton becomes the second coming of Terrence Williams. Definitely is a brick layer at this point, but he is at least 2" taller than Williams…we’ll see

ownership is showing that they’re committed to making bold moves to bring this franchise back to respectability.
This is a grey area to me. Are we building respectability through constructing a championship team, or by filling the FO with big names and adding an ‘experimental’ coach to raise our publicity profile?

Doesn't this go against what they said they wanted????
I’m so confused. They said they wanted an experienced coach with a defensive mindset. Also, they wanted someone with a strong philosophy that the players could adapt to over time. Mark Jackson may be saying good things in the interview but has no track record of any of this.
I wanted Budz or Casey – my hope is that both turned it down. If it is about money (Mark Jax pretty cheap) this contradicts Lacob’s promise that money won’t be a factor. grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Is there anyone on the Warriors dumb enough to mistake Jackson’s stilted, slack-jawed posturing as “strong enough to be in charge”? Danny Fortson himself wouldn’t be dumb and/or crazy enough to buy into this nonsense. If Mark Jackson is an NBA coach then Napoleon Dynamite should replace Stern as commissioner.

yes mussleman was pretty decent. its not his fault the warriors overcommitted money to guys like fortson, dampier and foyle and they lost out on larry hughes and gilbert arenas who were phenomenal together in washington for that two year stretch and were forced to trade jamison in a salary dump
and yeah arenas’ last year they won 38 games on the verge of becoming a playoff team and the next year everyone but j-rich and uncle cliffy were injured and he still took them to 37 wins. there was no need to fire him

Well warriors are offering much more then the lakers and report is they are offering more then mike brown is paid
Also if I am him I am picking the warriors lakers are old and coming down…warriors are young and have potential
report is they are offering more then mike brown is paid
what? isnt mike brown getting paid like 4.5 million a year?
why would they offer an assistant coach more than 4.5 mill
when they just signed the head coach for 2 mill
Lacob wants the people and said no price was to high
so who knows that guy reported it not me go look that up
haha winning wise but that is not a first class organization that was shown in the playoffs
Also everyone but bynum is old and bynum is punk ass. There window is pretty much closed. Not to mention kobe will be the death of mike brown. Because the lakers have made it clear he does not matter to them much anymore in the future of the lakers. That will be a drama club all season
the recent rumor (though i dont think it will happen)
of a trade with paul for westbrook being the main pieces, would almost guarantee the lakers dont get back to the finals
Chris Paul is not going to get traded!!
maybe he can force something in the last year of his contract, but there is no way the NO front office volunteers him up for anyone other then maybe Dwight

I wouldn't say Curry isn't a true pg.
He needs proper development. He had bad turnovers and tried one-handed passes too much, but that just goes with learning the pg position.
the only players id rather have than steph at PG

Curry can play pg.
not sure what you mean by “a real pg.” Plus, having a pg who can shoot like Curry is always helpful
What difference does it make, when he’s such an effective scorer?
I'm the soul brotha' like no other!
Scorer's aren't necessarily good at running an offense.
Need somebody to do that too. Or else even if he shoots well, offense will be terribly unbalanced. Not many teams have succeeded with their primary scorer also being their general on offense.
http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/
I don’t see Curry needing to be a pass first point guard for us to be a winning team. I also don’t expect him to be the leading scorer all the time, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was on a regular basis. I think we’ll do well with him as the leading scorer on a somewhat regular basis.
I'm the soul brotha' like no other!
I can't see him being the #1 option
At least not in the way Monta is, taking 20-25 shots a night, he can’t create his own shot on a consistent enough basis to do that. Would be fine with him and DLee taking 15-20 shots and spreading the wealth though.

This sounds better, but we'd definitely need other pieces and a 3rd reliable scorer.
Putting Curry in charge of this roster as is or minus Monta and plus a big shooting guard isn’t going to instantly make us a playoff team. It seem to me some people think it will.
http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/
HA
Whoever here thinks we’re making the playoffs next year…hahahahahahaha
The western conference is stacked, maybe we’ll win like 40 games next year. A lot has to happen to our roster to become a playoff team, namely:
1. Getting a good perimeter defender
2. Getting a good post defender (or drastic improvement from Udoh)
3. Getting some semblence of a decent bench
4. Get some low post scoring
5. Getting some players who actually have winning experience/mentality
The list goes on…
I still think the Clippers have a brighter outlook than us for the immediate future, and if that’s any indication, we’re probably not making the playoffs next year.

Not you, but still ok because you know for a fact that this team will be exactly the same as last year roster wise and scheme wise
I am glad you know it all no point to watching then thanks
Why are you here talkin shit about the Warriors
Stephen Curry is awesome D Lee can…well….. yeah he has no d and Biedrins confidence is a little shaken up. You are in no position to be hating on another team while your a fan of the bottom 5 worst team in the league.

You have just been saying the same stuff everyone here has been saying for the last year. The roster sucks, calm down. What team are you a fan of?
he was decent his first two years until avery started having him run down the court and humphries taking alot
weve been screaming at his rebounding all year, he was decent and had good rebounding games his first two years where averaged 8 and then this year the mono and his calcium depoist, and new big man coach and who knows
8 still isnt very good
for a 7 footer that plays 36 mins a game
that was the knock on him in college , deron is getting on him about it during season and they made some bet
he said he wants to improve his game and work on everything, i know, he had very good rebounding games his first two years where he would get over 10 and sometimes 15,
alot of it was avery brought in a new system plus humphries was great for us this year on boards and team rebounds better than first two years
lets not crow too hard about brook
the knicks had a less talented Brook in Eddy Curry a few years ago, and in the long run, a 7 footer who can’t rebound is not truly worth his weight….or height.
Yes, I am a Giants fan. Now that we got that out of the way....

Or will he be given a chance to play for Jackson?
Every man is my superior in that I may learn from him.
I know that Jackson prefers Steph to Monta, being a point guard himself.

I’m not really a fan of this decision right now. Jeff Van Gundy always seems like he knows what he’s talking about (moving the ball, stressing defense), and Mark Jackson disagrees with him on everything. I could see Mark Jackson letting Monta run isos a lot.
But he was a good point guard, and they seem better capable of teaching ball movement and set plays. He’s a big fan of Curry too. Maybe he can surprise up by teaching how to put in some defensive effort.

Even if its with the #2, it’s a really bad draft year. Wait until next draft to do something like that. And Deng is not that great, he’s DW with better defense and a much worse contract

Getting the #2 pick in a “really bad draft year” still means you get the best (or next best) talent in the draft, which fits the bill on stockpiling on talent. How is that a bad thing at all?
by WYK on Jun 6, 2011 8:25 PM PDT up reply actions
when people say "really weak draft"
they are talking about the DEPTH of the draft. they are not saying every player in the draft is weak. derrick williams was still projected to go #1 or 2 when barnes, jones, and sullinger hadn’t decided to go back to school, and those same players are still going to go in the top 7 or 8 picks next season in your supposed “strong” draft, which really just means deep draft.
i think i replied to the wrong person haha

True
But next year we have potential superstars coming out, DWill can be a star. Not a superstar imo

the thing is
the teams that have a chance to draft those “potential superstars” are not going to trade away those picks for monta
Some teams will deal a top 7 pick for proven high scorers
And next year you can get a potential star just in the top 10

I think I’m going to start rooting for the Warriors to lose now, because:
a) We clearly aren’t winning a championship next year
b) We need a top 7 pick next year
c) It will get us closer to firing Mark Jackson
d) I’m not sure it’s ethically defensible to support an organization that decides Mark Jackson is the best choice available.

not only did he want a lot of dough the reason he got the boot in houston is because he did not want to invoke youth and encourage player development
all the young rockets you saw play this year played by default due to injuries or trades of veterans at their position
i’m not sure how much of a leash he would give to the new warrior rookies, udoh, and even steph if steph had an off week and adleman brought in some veteran pg

ideally you tank a couple seasons
but it seems like whenever the warriors try it, they decide to give up on it partway through to try to win now, and get stuck in the land of mediocrity again. (most recently, the david lee trade)
by bigkino217 on Jun 6, 2011 8:11 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
probably the worst part though
was that after all of those seasons of giving up on tanking trying to win immediately, they finally had a solid team that had just made the playoffs, and they pulled a complete 180, trading jrich for wright.
Agreed, this is what’s so frustrating.
This is why I think we should blow it up and start over, besides Curry and maybe Udoh/Williams. Monta was my favorite player a few years ago, but now he just reminds me of the path of team mediocrity our management seems intent on going down.
I want to like Monta again, so I’d rather he go to another team (where maybe he can get disciplined on shot selection by a coach who cares) than waste away on a worst case 30ish win best case 40ish win team.
And plus, our “promise” that we will make the playoffs this coming year shows a serious lack of foresight, as we would be much better served with a top 7 pick in a loaded draft than a first round exit.
But now that I think about it, maybe Jackson is the first step in the tanking process.
But now that I think about it, maybe Jackson is the first step in the tanking process.
not unless we’re about to go on a 3 year tanking spree
We can’t, which is why we are screwed. We have had opportunities. When Baron left, we could have not gotten Maggette and tanked. We could have not extended Jackson for so long. Hell, we could have not traded Randolph for Lee (was against at the time, not just hindsight bias). I’m pretty optimistic about Lee’s play this year, but I would rather have had the boom/bust potential, plus the delay so we could be worse in the short term to get better draft positioning and hopefully have a strong core of young players going forward.
We always try and tread water by getting guys who aren’t terrible, but aren’t good enough. It reminds me of the mid-2000s Giants when they were trying to get as many veterans as possible to team with Bonds. Except, you know, we don’t have a Barry Bonds.

the only way we're gettng a top 7 pick
is if multiple key players go down for the season, or if we get lucky in the lottery
Depends on what were getting for either "best player"

id be willing to trade them all really
but the price would be pretty ridiculously high for steph.
for steph, there is almost no realistic trade for the amount i would want in return
basically a team would have to be out of their minds to give us a player for steph that id accept
What??
So if CP3 became available you wouldn’t deal Steph for him?

Well Iggy is a better all around player.
Ellis can’t play the point and isn’t very efficient on offense. Defense is meh at best.
Iggy is just as efficient as Ellis (which isn’t good), but he shoots less and passes more, which is good.
Yes, Ellis does score 10 more ppg but he also takes 9-10 more shots per game. I don’t feel Ellis’ offense is vastly superior to Iggy’s, if it is better, its minimal.
if ball handling and passing are counted in offense (which they are)
then iggy’s offense is better than monta’s

ESPN reporting that Lacob is trying to get Malone as Assistant Coach
In an effort to build a solid staff of assistants around Jackson, the Warriors have made a “generous” offer to New Orleans Hornets assistant coach Mike Malone to serve as Jackson’s top assistant, NBA coaching sources told ESPN.com’s Marc Stein.
Sources say that the Warriors have even discussed the possibility of offering the title of associate head coach to convince Malone to come to Golden State as opposed to accepting an offer to reunite with new Lakers coach Mike Brown in Los Angeles, although one source close to the process described that step as just one “consideration.”
Malone interviewed with the Lakers on Monday, sources said, after NBA.com’s David Aldridge reported that Malone had his final interview with Golden State on Sunday. Brown badly wants to hire Malone and freshly fired ex-Detroit Pistons coach John Kuester as assistants in L.A. to join a staff that will also feature Ettore Messina. Reports in Italy surfaced over the weekend that Brown has convinced Messina, one of Europe’s most successful coaches, to finally jump to the NBA as a full-time Lakers consultant.
But because the Lakers have provided Brown with a limited budget to build out his staff, sources said Monday night that the Warriors are still in a strong position in the Malone chase because new Golden State owner Joe Lacob can comfortably outbid L.A. Sources say Lacob is determined to surround Jackson with the best possible bench to offset Jackson’s lack of coaching experience.

Lacob was a man of his word he said he would make bold move. He also said money is no problem when it comes to bringing in the best assistants. Offseason has not even really started for once I am actually excited to see what is going to happen. Because lacob did not do this without a plan. His plan was set before he bought the team. It is now going on little by little. I will be said to see some of my favorite players go away like monta but if it helps the team then I am all for it.
This is a boom or bust move. I am excited to see what happens. Players like lebron and durant are giving a shout out to him so this could be a plus in free agency with other players. Let’s go warriors.

How's your patience level?
I wish Mark Jackson the best of luck with us. I’m willing to give him a year or 2 to learn the nuances of setting up a routine with the assistant coaches, coaching and motivating the players, and playing the strategic chess match against the opposing coach.
But it’s a BIG step from “knowing the game” to “selling it to the players” and convincing them to play it his way. Jackson’s never done it before, so it’s going to be a long road for him and a big test of patience for us. That’s assuming that he CAN learn the tricks of being a coach.
So how’s your patience level?

If one poll can sum up a coaching hire...
This is a perfect representation of the reaction of the Mark Jackson hire. Personally I think its ridiculous hiring a coach with no coaching experience, or even a desire to gain any coaching experience. But as this poll shows, no one can judge for sure how this will work out. As it is with most Warriors moves, hoping for the best but expecting the worst.
Probably a good choice if your #1 focus is to make Curry into a true PG… destroy your credibilty in one fell swoop and solidify your reputation as the Vince McMahon of NBA owners.

Well, I had my suspicions about the legitimacy of a Harvard educated tech-lackey as an NBA owner, but never did I imagine they would be confirmed in such an inglorious display of hackneyed, sideshow posturing.
Yes, like Bill Veeck before him, the former St. Louis Cardinals owner that famously sent a 43" midget to the plate, Joe Lacob has pulled out all the stops to offer the most unsubstantial gimmick he could possible muster as his choice for head coach of the Golden State Warriors.
While reports had linked such notable NBA fixtures as Lawrence Frank, Dwayne Casey, and Brian Shaw to the head coaching position, in the end it was a P.C.P. binge and/or acute psychosis that won the day, as Silicon Valley wonder boy Joe Lacob made the decision to sabotage a nearly half-billion dollar investment by hiring the Rob Schneider of coaching candidates to lead his team even further into the depths of NBA limbo.
Coming this Fall: Marc Jackson’s gonna find out it’s not so easy being a borderline autistic, monotone train-wreck trying to coach a professional basketball team in:

Couldn't agree more
These owners showed up to a near universal wave of adoration, though most of it was of the “at-least-you’re-not-the-other-guy” variety. They asked for a year to make some changes. Since then, it’s become abundantly clear that this is a gimmick ownership, as BCE explains above. Off the top of my head I can think of three: the Asian Gimmick, the Logo Gimmick, and now this There-Goes-That-Man Gimmick. It’s disgraceful. It’s a word I keep coming back to, and I’m disappointed it wasn’t in the poll. “Other” does not accurately reflect my distate towards what this ownership group has done up until now.

Where's the Upside?
Jackson has less coaching experience than Keith Smart and I thought that was the big knock on Smart. If this is the kind of risk-taking that is supposed to take us to the next level then I have to disagree.
I thought that Larry Riley said that we were not going to rush to get a coach. Then, when all the candidates are gone or will be running out soon we rush to get Jackson. I heard Riley earlier say that he thought from Jackson’s tv commentary that he had a great understanding of the game. Is that the best argument? He said some things that made sense on TV. Matt Steinmetz makes interesting comments on TV too. OK he’s played in the NBA for 17 years as a pg. Does this make him coaching material? Where’s the upside? How has he shown that he can be a good coach in the NBA? I think there is more risk that he will just be another forgotten name in the Warrior dust bin.
With all the geniuses now in the Warriors front office this is the best guy out there for us? C’mon seriously? Is it April 1st? If not, wake me up from this terrible dream.
Oh wait…he does have the same last name as a great NBA coach. Surely this had to go into the analysis.
Mark Jackson
This seems like such a gamble. If Monta does get traded for a decent 2-guard, then the W’s have a window of about 2-3 years to seriously improve and become championship contenders. I’m not sure how starting from scratch with a head coach with zero experience really puts them down that path.
What is Jackson’s offensive system? Defensive system?
If he wasn’t an analyst for ABC/ESPN, would he have been in consideration for the job?
Will Jackson as a first year coach be a marked improvement over Keith Smart in his second year? Won’t he trip into the same pitfalls?
To me, this seems like a choice spurred by ownership, not by management. Now, I believe this is a better choice than Mike Brown because Jackson could be very good, but it’s just a gamble.
