2011 NBA Finals Game 5: Miami Heat @ Dallas Mavericks

A 101F fever didn't stop this move.

via d.yimg.com

I only have time for a quickie today: Another must win for the Mavericks tonight to take the series lead before they head back to Miami for Game 6 and 7. Expect the Heat to strike hard after going scoreless for 5 1/2 minutes in the 4th qtr. Expect LeBron James to go for a quintuple double after his poor scoring performance. Expect Dirk Nowitzki to play better without the fever.

by AJC3317 on Jun 9, 2011 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions

there were a lot of variables that messed that up

remember the celtics were up by about 15-18 points when perkins tore his knee up in game 6.

then rasheed with his bad back, nearly paralyzed, had to guard bynum for the rest of game 6 and game 7

plus kobe and pierce wiped each other out. kg had gasol handled

the celtics had that tile locked up in almost identical style to 2008(a blowout in game 6) until perk destroyed his knee

i dunno what you're talking about

the lakers completely dominated game 6. Perk injured himself in the middle of a blowout. His presence may have changed the outcome of game 7, but game 6 was going to be won by the Lakers regardless

yeah my bad i was thinking of the game 4 comeback. LA had game 6 won by halftime

but rasheed on a bad back had to guard bynum is game 7 and that ultimately was the deciding factor

i dont know how kobe won finals mvp when he goes 10-22, 8-20, 10-29, 13-27, 9-19, and 6-24

LOL at using FG/FGA to judge a player

How long ago have you started watching basketball?

how about this:

he scored 30 points on 22 shots, 21 points on 20 shots, 29 points on 29 shots, 33 points on 22 shots, 38 points on 27 shots, 26 points on 19 shots and 23 points on 24 shots against one of the best defensive teams of all time who were given the right to hand check him all series long.

Putting him at 56.7% TS

by SDtotheBay on Jun 10, 2011 1:55 PM PDT up reply actions

you're making fun of him for using fg%

yet you’re using points per shot, which is still horrible

someone could go 0-2 fg, 10-20 ft resulting in “10 points on 2 shots” (46.2% TS)

just use TS% instead of those other misleading stats.

i think if wade is on the floor it wont hurt

but if jones isnt shooting he isnt doing anything else. he may have won the three poitn shootout but he is very streaky. he’s frail and has no sense of court awareness on either side of the floor

but i didnt mean to come off back-handed. i agree lebron even if he seems like some steroid cyborg freak is wearing down at the end of games but then its like this is the heats problem: they have little depth and the dropoff in everything when you sub jones for james will be instantly felt even for 4-5 minutes unless wade plays like he’s in the ncaa tourney with marquette again

by doubleteapot on Jun 9, 2011 9:12 PM PDT reply actions

okay i want to point some things out

although miami took chicago out in 5 we can say it wasnt easy. chicago’s defense kept them in the games but the fact they didnt have a scorer like uhhh ben gordon next to rose made their offense too 1-dimesional

now dallas is able to control miami depsite them having perimeter players like wade, james, miller, and even chalmers(for his defense and 3 point shooting). dallas is starting freaking jj barea and masking barea and terry with zone

what do these teams have in common? they have a plethora of defenders and play solid team defense and what chicago lacks in that second-hand ben gordon scoring punch dallas has in terry

now how close are the dubz to this mode.
for one if they got ANY production out of the 5 spot on either end would be a hell of a start

second: how do you compare curry and ellis to rose and bogans/brewer or kidd and barea/terry? give me a backup point that can play defense like a 38 year old kidd and some solid stevensons, brewers, bogans, marions etc to help mask steph and montas defensive shortcomings

three: the team identity of run and gun(albiet its fun) needs to change. this team needs to learn how to play defense first and play in delayed transition. if all else fails let monta or steph do their thing. you cant run if you give up buckets

i think we can all agree that right now udoh is the best defender. this team has no average perimeter defender and besides udoh they lack frontcourt defense. team defense is poor as well and the bench brings next to nothing almost every night

if dallas can play kidd/marion/stevenson in roatation with terry and barea against the heat and win by using zone to mask the perimeter deficiencies and playing kidd on cross-matches. the warriors can do the same

for one hope there is an amnesty and drop bieds and go get a quality 5 in FA. then hope kawhi leonard falls if not take BPA. At this point i think it should come down to valuciannis or singleton

then one-way defenders are real cheap. go to hoopshype and look up the salaries of one way defenders who arent ask to do much on offense i think ronnie brewer makes the most at 4.7 million but that is an aberration. again the starting 4 plus a 5 that brings even 8 points a game and solid defense is enough offense. go get perimeter defenders to help mask monta and steph

dallas shows you can mask small backcourts with the right pieces and schemes. and the bulls show no matter how small they are legit nba scorers are needed against solid defense. there is no one man wrecking crew. how dedicated are the warriors to changing the culture and implementing a defense first system

monta, terry, ben gordon? who is the best right now? who would want right now(based off age, contract, ability). now we dont have a dirk but if lee can do 18 and 12 and the 5 can do 8 and 8 i think a growing steph/monta/dorell trio can be enough offense

First of all, you need to recognize some things about Terry, who seems like the logical comparison to Monta on that team.

First of all, Terry is not a good defender, but if you look at his on court/off court stuff you see that he’s nowhere near as bad as Monta has been. There’s a tendency to look at bad players and say “oh, well, they’re both bad defenders, so its even” but Terry, while bad, has been much better these past two years than Monta.

Second of all, Terry is an efficient scorer – not incredibly so, but he’s been average-to-above-average almost his entire career. Terry is doing something a lot of us want to see Monta do – “first, do no harm.” He doesn’t take shots away from the more efficient players on the court.

Lastly, understand that Dallas is a bunch of role players. If anything, the success of Dallas shows you how important having a true superstar on your team is. Dallas can survive with some poor individual defenders because they have true offensive greatness on their team. The Warriors don’t. Monta is not in Dirk’s class as a scorer. It’s not close.

Further looking at Dallas: Kidd, for most of his time in Dallas, has been a very good defender. Extremely good. He’s also big and strong enough to defend bigger shooting guards, which allows the team to play Barea and Terry against point guards, where they’re not overmatched as much. (Worth pointing out that they didn’t zone all the time all season, it’s a specific matchup that they’re using against Miami).

So you can’t say that Dallas is a “small backcourt” team – because Kidd is such a unique player. A Monta-Kidd backcourt would work (well, if we could un-age Kidd a few years) in the sense that Kidd could be the PG offensively but the SG defensively, which would solve a big part of Monta’s defensive problems.

by Ronaldinho on Jun 9, 2011 10:53 PM PDT up reply actions

sigh

missing the point. Put monta in Terry’s role he’ll do better. But he’s not playing with Dirk, Kidd, Mario, Chandler, Barea etc.

Dallas is just an excellent TEAM. Miami may have more talent, but I emphasis the team factor. Miami needs to regroup and atleast play their aggressive team defense if they wanna salvage the series.

i agree with your point, but the ‘not having a dirk’ is a MAJOR factor. We’re all in agreement Monta is a unique player with some excellent skills. But he’s not an alpha player.

by tafkasam on Jun 9, 2011 11:16 PM PDT up reply actions

i agree which is why i put emphasis on monta's defeciencies

when you are a superstar alpha dog you tend to have one tiny weakness that people disregard because you dominate everything else

monta is not that. he will never be that unless he gained the point guard ability of steve nash. he needs a roster makeup that masks him on defense either letting him overpress other twos and chase them into double-teams or to the paint to get blocked or guard the other teams point guard on cross-matches

but i’m saying the problems with this team lay way past monta not being a solid all around stud. the roster is just flawed but monta is an unique talent you dont just cast away

it wont be easy or quick but the warriors can go out and get some cheap defenders to dissolve the major minutes monta and steph play together before the 4th quarter and then go get any production from the 5 spot. sefolosha, corey brewer, keith bogans, anthony carter, etc these guys are defensive hounds that make basically nothing. the only defensive guys that are paid big money are guys that score or facilitate on offense

and yes lee is not dirk but i’m not asking them to be instant title contenders. just being a perennial playoff team hopefully would lead to feuling everyones passion for a ring and improving their weaknesses and then make oakland a more favorable destination for free agents who wouldnt mind a paycut to go title hunting. plus once you get to the playoffs anything can happen

and you cannot run and gun if you are constantly inbounding the ball after the opponents make a bucket. if you play solid defense and force turnovers and bad missed shots you dont need 4 20 ppg scorers to make transition layups and dunks

Who’s advocating “just casting him away?”

People want to get value for him. We just see that said value can take forms other than volume scoring.

The center position is a bigger problem for the Warriors. But claiming that we should try to address other problems because we have a problem at center is sort of crazy.

by Ronaldinho on Jun 10, 2011 10:36 AM PDT up reply actions

well monta straight up for iggy is casting him away

sure igoudola brings elite defense and a mix of rebounding, size, and playmaking but at this point in his career he is a worse number 1 option on an average team than monta.

he folded up in the first round. its not like derrick rose who shot 7 percent and was the mvp. igoudola averaged 5 shot attempts a game in the first round. he lacks range past 20 feet a la josh smith and since he wants to be point forward he declines to slash off the ball

we agree the center spot is the first thing needed to be upgraded but iguodola seems like a lateral move if the defensive makeup of the other 11 guys remains the same which in the long run would be negative if he remains in his passive point forward role while collecting about 10 million more than what monta will

if the team could just get some defensive role players and convince monta to be jason terry/jamal crawford(post gsw-era)/ben gordon(chicago) on steroids. it would go a long way

if dallas can go this deep with barea and terry. the warriors have to at least try and mold their roster after dallas with a defensive identity before giving up on monta/steph

remember how quick the kings gave up on tyreke and kevin martin and how much they kicked themsleves in the foot? luckily marcus thornton is a mini-me version of k-mart making like 10% of what k-mart makes

take into account dallas is not at full strength and then you really wonder how flawed the heat really are?

insert caron butler and roddy beaubois in the lineup with haywood and dallas takes this in 5 games or less

like i said, he may have been overpaid but ben gordon is a proven nba scorer and would have kept rose free(or got deng easy buckets) when they put lebron on rose

I heard a couple things why Lebron is not the driver he used to be...

his athletism is already on the decline..he’s trying to extend his career. You usually see guys become more jump shot oriented as their athletism begins to disappear. Also Lebron is trying to extend his career because he wants to beat Kareems all time scoring mark.

by tenkaistar on Jun 10, 2011 11:35 AM PDT reply actions

hmmm

I don’t buy it.

I think it’s one part fatigue (i mean he carries A LOT of weight)
Another part dallas’ defense deserves credit for constantly checking is dribble
And final part is fear/over thinking. Look at his face, he seems to kind of be uncomfortable

by tafkasam on Jun 10, 2011 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Absolutely agreed on the overthinking thing -

One of the things I used to love about watching LeBron play was how much fun he seemed to be having. There was this aspect to him which always looked like he was thinking, “Wow, I get to do this for a living? And I’m really really good at it!”

But I’ve only rarely seen that sort of look on his face recently – he looks tense, like he’s thinking about what people will say after the game. Like maybe he doesn’t really want to drive into traffic because it’s hard.

by Ronaldinho on Jun 10, 2011 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t buy it.

all those things could be fixed by coaching.
With Lebron, Wade, and bosh there’s no reason to tire any of them out. Let each one carry the team for 1/3 of the game and keep them all fresh for the end.
If Dallas wants to bother the dribble just pass it around and make them chase it till they lose interest in it.
If he’s uncomfortable make him comfortable.
