Now that Keith Smart is not coaching the Warriors, it's safe to expect more actual plays being run instead of Monta isolation. Here are a couple plays the Warriors ran last year (yes, Keith Smart did have some plays that didn't require Monta to isolate) that the Warriors might run more next year.
Today: Stephen Curry curling off a screen by David Lee
Player 1: Stephen Curry
Player 2: Monta Ellis
Player 3: Dorell Wright
Player 4: David Lee
Player 5: Ekpe Udoh
The 2. 3, and 5 players can be anybody (within reason, of course, since Louis Amundson is not a three point shooter)
The play starts with Curry entering the ball to Monta and then cutting to the rim, forcing his defender to follow him.
David Lee then sets a screen around the elbow area and Steph reverses direction, curling off David Lee's screen.
Monta then passes the basketball to Steph, while David Lee pops out after setting the screen. After that, there are two ways this play can go.
One: if David Lee's man hedges to prevent Steph from shooting the ball, Steph can pass the ball the Lee and he can knock down the open jumper. (The triangles are the defenders)
Two: if David Lee's man instead does not hedge out, Steph will be wide open with his defender trailing him, and he can catch-and-shoot.
David Lee shot 43% from 16-23 feet last year. Curry had 1.07 PPP from off-screen situations, and is also a great passer. This play uses both of their strengths. However, obviously if they run it a lot teams will catch on, so there are several variations to this set, which will be covered later.
