Deron Williams and Dwight Howard in Golden State?

Is there any way possible that we could somehow have both Dwight and Deron on the Warriors? These two seem to be the last 2 superstars who will be available for a while and it would be awesome if they both ended up here. How much money do we have for free agency next summer? Say we make a trade for Dwight using Curry and other pieces would we be able to then sign Deron Williams and have those two as our core going foward?

Good Post!!

Also we might have to do what Boston did trade almost every body for cap room. It could happen but Keep Monta, lee, and wright. We dont keep curry if we have deron williams.

Defense wins championships!! Warriors need that badly!!!!!

Yeah!!! I want no part of Dwight and Deron if we have to give up Monta, Lee, or Dorell!

There will be no extra point!

THIS would be why amnestying Lee would be doesnt make sense ( :

Wow, now im imagining if we had taken Lee off the books how that would play out in terms of landing a couple guys like howard and deron….

by PIRATEWARRIOR on Jan 12, 2012 4:29 PM PST up reply actions

I say its a possibility, but I think the only realistic way of getting both would be to ONLY get Dwight first.

Orlando wants something we already have: youth and talent. New Jersey…not so much.

Thus that mean we can go for Howard if Orlando best sees GSW as good trading partners(i doubt it…but there is a chance depending on how good we become or bad lol). It might be risky to lose talented players like Curry for Howard rental and it is certainly unnerving, but having a superstar on the Warriors may just change the scenery just a little bit even if we don’t have an agreement.

With that said, if we somehow got Howard in a Warriors uniform we can always persuade Deron to leave New Jersey and come sign with the Warriors…thus making the Warriors at least a top 5 contending in the West.

Deron/Monta/Hedo(orDorell)/DLee/Howard >> is good.

Yea thats the lineup

I was dreaming about. A Deron/Monta backcourt would be really similar to the Baron/Monta backcourt that worked so well in 07/08. Deron is a perfect fit next to Monta, just like Dwight is a perfect fit next to Lee lol

First step is to get Dwight.

Get him and then see what we could do.

Remember how NY used to be nothing? Then they went and signed Amare. When they got him, Melo WANTED to join them and so did CP3. Their also in the trade talks for Dwight. It only takes one player to start attracting guys… Of course, NYC is a huge market but the Bay is also a pretty big one. Bottom line is, if we could get Dwight, I think we would have a BIG chance of getting Deron. Big things are coming…..

Of course, even after saying that, its very unlikely, so don’t get your hopes up people lol.

You can’t trade a guy making $3M for a guy making $18M.

if it means going over…

You can’t go over the cap to sign max-level free agents from other teams.

C’mon guys. This isn’t fantasy hoops. The OP started his post with the phrase “is there any way possible?” At least make some effort to keep your replies in the realm of reality.

I never said straight up....

sorry, i probably should have said Steph+filler. And couldn’t the nets sign+trade Williams to us?

by jpees on Jan 11, 2012 11:21 PM PST up reply actions

Sure, they could, but there’s no reason for them to do that. It means they have to take similar salary back as Deron is making, and why would they want our filler for that kind of money? Plus that guarantees them no Deron, whereas if they don’t make that trade with us, it takes out a competitor and gives them a better shot at keeping him.

by Missing Barry on Jan 12, 2012 12:07 AM PST up reply actions

Well since Deron will be unrestricted

I would think the Nets would rather receive someone like Monta in return as opposed to letting Deron walk. I could be wrong.

by ef_werd on Jan 11, 2012 7:11 PM PST reply actions

plausible but thin chance

I have a feeling wherever dwight lands is where deron will try to follow. One thing I do like going into this season as how much cap space we have next year and I do believe they are playing biedrins less to get his trade stock up. As I stated in other replies to fanshots after this year the contracts for Monta and biedrins will look more and more enticing due to their flat rate contracts and with the derrick rose rule a lot of these new stars such as westbrook and durant will make more than what their teams can afford.

by mrorangesoda on Jan 11, 2012 8:03 PM PST via mobile reply actions

I would love to have Deron Williams with Monte. That would be a beast backcourt. A powerful PG that can pass with a scoring Monte.

by Newbay on Jan 11, 2012 10:11 PM PST reply actions

C'mon dude

He’s only been on the team for seven years. Everybody knows it takes eight full seasons before you learn how to correctly spell a player’s name! ;-)

by Lacob's Ladder on Jan 12, 2012 8:46 AM PST up reply actions

Deron + Curry is a better match, imho. Curry’s a much better shooter, much more efficient scorer, and better rebounder. Those are all vital qualities if you’re looking to complement a penetrating PG like Deron. In Monta’s otherwise solid start this year, his stroke from downtown seems to have deserted him (last year’s respectable 3fg% could be an aberration), and his rebounding has gone from bad to terrible.

Plus Curry’s cheap pricetag (at least for the next two years) makes him a more natural complement to a max guy like Deron.

Of course, all this assumes Curry’s ankle isn’t toast…

There will be no extra point!

by Sleepy Freud on Jan 12, 2012 7:38 AM PST up reply actions

You're forgetting

Monta’s catch and shoot numbers from last year were phenomenal. Obviously so are Currys.

A player like Deron would take the ball out of Monta’s hands and set him up more. Also like Baron, Deron (rhyme!) is an excellent post up player, and can set monta up in different ways.

I would not be shocked to see Monta’s TS% go above .570 with Deron Williams.

by tafkasam on Jan 12, 2012 7:42 AM PST up reply actions

wow but what if he made currrys ts go up? i think sleepy got it right curry is the man but it all is hinging on his ankles

Monta for what its worth is the far more superior player in terms of durability…that must be worth something

by PIRATEWARRIOR on Jan 12, 2012 4:38 PM PST up reply actions

but yes

Obviously, if you can get Deron by giving up Monta, you do it in a second.

Monta and Curry are comparable players in the context of playing with Deron. But Curry makes 7.1 mil less, is younger, and will have more value. If we could keep him, heck we’d have our back up PG solves (like you said, give him 20-24 mpg at SG, and 12-16 at PG). Or just as good, he’s one hell of a trade chip.

by tafkasam on Jan 12, 2012 7:46 AM PST up reply actions

scorer, and better rebounder.

which is kinda weird as Montay’s speed and agility should be able to get him into position to get more? Maybe it’s just not his “thing”?

If you want Dwight, you find a way to convince Adidas to persuade him. If you get Dwight, Deron will follow.

First, you need to have some cap space….

That ship has sailed. But it’s okay, we got rid of Charlie Bell’s 4 mil expiring contract.

Sadly,

I don’t think we’d need to Amnesty DLee to dump him.

He has some trade value, especially if we’re looking for nothing in return.

However management won’t do it. Because he’s ‘good’

I bet Kings would give us Chuck Hayes for DLee. That’s savings right there

I really dislike Riley more everyday, and while I like what Lacob says, his actions are closer to Cohan than anything.

The trade machine is down, but what do you think of this

Magic: Lee ($11.6), Wright (3.8), Thompson (2.1), Monta (11), Harris (9.3) — [Total: 37.8]

Warriors: Howard (17.9), Millsap (6.7), C.J. Miles (3.7) — [28.3]

Jazz: Turkoglu (10.6), Nelson (7.3), Ryan Anderson (2.2) — [20.1]

The Magic receive young and talented players. Warriors get Howard and a solid forward in Millsap. Jazz get an all-around small forward, a point guard with a good shot, and room for Favors to grow. Essentially, draft picks and money will have to be thrown around to seal the deal.

The Warriors would only have Biedrins, Udoh, Curry, and Millsap on the books at the end of the season. The Warriors could trade Biedrins for exprings and the best deal I could come up with was for Beasley and Tolliver. This would leave Udoh, Curry, and Millsap on the books totaling $14.7 million in committed salaries coming into the 2011-2012 season.

Lol

No way Utah will do the trade, Millsap is to valueable for them and besides that they only get some scrap in return (ok minus Anderson maybe).

by DutchWarrior on Jan 12, 2012 6:57 AM PST up reply actions

Favors is already in line to replace Millsap. Turkoglu can rebound, shoot the 3, drive, and dish — a glue guy similar to Kirilenko. Plus, they upgrade Harris to Nelson, who is a better shooter. I don’t think it’s that farfetched for Utah to be interested. If they want to hang on to Millsap, then we could try to inquire about Favors instead.

DLee to Sac for Chuck Hayes (making 5/22 mil)

Biedrins to Minnesota for Beasley + Tolliver (both expire)

Klay/Udoh/Monta to Toronto for Amir Johnson/Barbosa and their 1sr.

Boom 2012/13 Warriors have-
Dorell- 4.1 mil
Curry- 3.9 mil
ChuckWagon 5.5 mil
Amir Johnson- 6 mil
Combine- 19.5 mil

BRush qualifying offer at 4 mil
Add draft pick (late lottery, 2 mil)
Add sucking so much with these trades + keeping Curry on the shelf, we have our lottery pick.

Now that’s a team with assets + financial flexibilty. And one who’d probably get better than current GSW in next 2 years.

But why do any of the other teams involved make these deals?

by Ronaldinho on Jan 12, 2012 8:28 AM PST up reply actions

Because it works on trade machine :)

Realistically-

Kings struggle to meet minimum salary, David Lee is an upgrade, and a vet, which their young team needs. Keith Smart likes him, and he’s under conract so they won’t lost him (small market appeal)

Minnesota want a center, Biedrins fits their system, is young, and under contract for a reasonable time. They’ve been shopping Beasley to make room for Williams

Toronto one… Casey likes Monta. He’s under contract and would help them push for playoffs. Two other young assets on rookie deals. They have Ed Davis who is interchangeable with amir. The pick was for wishful

Tyson Chandler

Warriors were about to get him, till the last moment he went to the knicks so what’s the chances of Dwight going to the Warriors…almost none. Plus I see Dwight wanting to go to a big market place like LA or Chicago

I think DubsFan mentioned something about adidas? Rose and Dwight are adidas’ poster children—having them on the same team would reduce the reach of their brand and create a marketing conflict. They’d have to drop either Rose or Howard—something no party involved wants (the NBA itself included).

You'll be surprised

NBA is a business. Those max shoe deals are enormous

by Babyface Assassin on Jan 12, 2012 2:17 PM PST up reply actions

Right. But nothing will maximize the value Dwight has for Adidas more than winning a title.

So that means they don’t want him in Chicago how?

In any event, the contract is already signed. It’s not like they have a lot of leverage.

by Ronaldinho on Jan 12, 2012 4:23 PM PST up reply actions

Playing in LA or NY would do more to sell shoes actually

LeBron’s shoes outsell Wade’s and he doesn’t have any titles. So it’s about market visibility, and sadly, rings aren’t the most important factor in that equation.

I’m not sure if Adidas is actually telling Dwight “Don’t go to Chicago,” but I can imagine them explaining the complications for them having their two biggest endorsers (each with their own shoe model) on the same team, and the possible ramifications of him going there.

http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/

by Brownie13 on Jan 12, 2012 5:11 PM PST up reply actions

Again, I'm not sure it's actually bad for them.

It’s hard to make clear comparisons. LeBron is an incredibly photogenic star, and (pre-decision, at least) was one of the few players in the league with a bigger-than-the-game personality.

Dwight’s never going to sell as many shoes, no matter where he goes.

by Ronaldinho on Jan 12, 2012 5:54 PM PST up reply actions

Dwight’s personality I think extends further than LeBron’s, both in how much we know about it, and how well-liked it is…

but he’s obviously not as known or as popular of a player. But really, I think the reason Dwight will never sell as many shoes is because he’s with Adidas and LeBron’s with Nike. Adidas is cool, but Nike rules the basketball gear market. Hands down.

As far as Rose and Dwight both being in Chicago, I can’t see how that would be a good thing for Adidas. When the two faces of your brand play for the same team, you’re obviously going to be reaching less fans/consumers.

Personally, I’d just go where I want to go. If Adidas had a problem (not saying they actually have one), I’d tell them I don’t care. If they drop me, I can sign with Nike or Jordan anyway.

And yet a couple of years ago there was all this talk about how Nike was behind the idea of engineering the “superteam” that become the Miami Heat.

“We’re dominant, and we all wear Nike!” seems like a good selling point. People like winners – and when a team can win multiple championships it picks up a huge amount of national attention: that’s sales in every market, not just the two markets you’d get by splitting your stars.

What does Chandler signing with the Knicks

Have to do with the W’s trading for Dwight? I really see no connection

by azw on Jan 12, 2012 12:34 PM PST up reply actions

An Idea

I know it probably won’t be to popular but its another way of looking at it.

Trade for Deron now and try to get Howard in free agency. Trade Steph, Dorell, (Klay or Udoh), (Andris or Lee) for Deron and Petro or Lopez if the Nets really do want to get rid of him. If they go for DLee and Klay, at the start of next season, that puts us at around $41 mil which should be plenty to sign Howard and hopefully Deron and Monta will be enough of a lure for Howard. Or they take Andris, we have a core of Deron, Monta and Lee, and have about 45 million tied up next year, not bad if he signs a really backloaded contract. If we can’t convince Dwight to come, let Deron walk next season and start the team from scratch since we’d only have about 23 or 27 mil guaranteed.
Also, with a starting lineup of Deron, Monta, Lee, and Dwight we should be able to attract decent talent willing to sign for less for a chance to win a title.

Question though: Deron has a player option on his contract next year, would he be able to use it then re-sign with the Warriors with a cheaper long term contract?
Also, for fun, any realistic ideas who we’d pick up for SF? The bench?

by Maxwell87 on Jan 12, 2012 11:54 AM PST reply actions

I would be really, really happy if this worked out.

And I think it could. If we just get one of them, then we have a good chance of getting the other. ANd we still have Monta and Lee to add to them. That would be a SCARY lineup.

Robinson (If we resign him)/Jenkins/FA?
Monta/Rush
Dorell/Rush/Chris Wright
Lee/Udoh
Howard/Tyler

Top 2 in West?
