Question about the lottery pick

If we finished say 12th overall (random slot) and do not finish inside the top 7 yet through the lottery we end up say 3rd in the draft do we get our pick or does Utah get it cause we finished outside the top 7?

We get it.

...

Of course, at that hypothetical #12 slot, there’s only a 2.5% chance of hitting lotto (and thereby keeping the pick).

I like to imagine this scenario: as the season draws to a close, we look right in line for #7 — but in our typical fashion manage to run off a string of “gutty” late-season wins to drop to #8-10. Then, just as we’re all about to commit mass hara-kiri, we pluck the #1 pick.

Well the good thing is the kings might benefit from our stupidity this year? Unless they also traded their pick for scrubs??

+1

Its a tough choice cause I think Barnes will be really nice but Davis has that type of Marcus Camby/KG defense you really like. He’s thin now but I have confidence he will get to 235 or more and the way he throws himself in there that will be enough, then we have a excuse to dump Lee

It's a scary thought

The thing that separates them is the fact Davis hustles like crazy and is a better rebounder. Davis was a 6’4 guard then just all of a sudden got big, so maybe he just needs to to grow into the new height.

I think in terms of potential he and Drummond are the best (though Drummond said he’s staying another year) . But TBH I think Lamb, Barnes, Sullinger/Davis are going to be the best in this draft in that order.

I think Lamb has star SG written all over him, Barnes will likely at the very least be a lock down defender who can shoot and is athletic (Paul George at worst basically), Sullinger will be a beast on the boards and in the low post and if he gets a jumper he becomes Kevin Love, and I think Davis will become a good 10-15, 10-12 and 2-3 in the NBA. If Drummond comes out now I can see him similar to Cousins(without the attitude) just way more athletic and lean. So he might in turn block some more shots.

Lamb

At worst he’s Nick Young, at best he’s the next star SG

If Sullinger works on his jumper what separates him and Love? Gilchrist has all the tools to be like Wallace as a lockdown defender, hustle and heart, rebounds like a beast and super athletic. At the very worst he’s a solid starter

Blake – 2nd year player too early

Noah- He can hit them and has done so before

Gooden – Don’t know him too well but I see him hit mid range jumpers against us

Emeka – Has he ever worked on his offense?

O’neal- Back in the day he was a decent overall scorer who could shoot a decent jumper

Chandler – I have never seen him ever work on his jumper

Kemp – Too young for me to know

Camby – He has a decent jumper and always has, it’s ugly but it worked when he tried to score more often then he does

How much and how effective he is I don’t know. But it is intriguing if he can do that well. He’s already long and athletic, runs the floor great, can shoot with range….

So let me get this straight. Yall wanna tank and its no Center in the lottery now that Drummond is staying in school. Mcadoo and Drummond will be in the next draft so why not be happy the pick is gone in a draft that has no real difference maker besides Barnes and Sullinger and we wouldn’t draft that high anyway. Its not a sure fire allstar in this draft.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 15, 2012 11:11 PM PST reply actions

Well Barnes,Sullinger,Lamb, Davis and Gilchrist IMO are all sure fire really solid players

And all of them have star potential , that is 5 good players.

Next year Drummond and Mcadoo are probably picks 1 and 2 barring any super star freshman which heavily decrease the chance of us getting either one

Yeah, it’s like turning down a free gift. Draft picks don’t cost much and a high one might bring us a good profit even if he’s a position we don’t need. Say we get Barnes and if we don’t want him trade for someone like Cousins? We’d be getting a center for a great price. Maximizing your assets is never a bad way to go. you know Best player available, yada yada, rah rah rah LGW etc. What if someone told you they’d give you a pass for free night clubbing for 3 years wit option to renew it for 4 more if you’d just stay home for 3 months? wouldn’t you want it?

15-0 Showing offensive potential all over the court. Do you want Anthony Davis AKA stickboy. We have seen how that works out. The teams that win at the draft go for game changers. Dwight over Okafor (people questioned it, but you gotta do it.)

I dont think he’s a scrub. I think he’ll be the next Aminu. Everything your telling me about Davis is what I heard about Aminu. If Aminu was in this draft with his college stats he’d go top 5 easily.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 15, 2012 11:55 PM PST up reply actions

Aminu was a SF who was always scouted as one and had Deng comparisons

None of that applies for Davis, Aminu was never considered a true big who’d lead your defense or compared to KG. Aminu also has motor issues unlike Davis and isn’t the shot blocker Davis is . He also never locked down the college paint like Davis, instead he’d disappear

I've noticed...

And no Aminu isn’t all enough or long enough nor has he ever guarded a center and you can’t just hop in and do it either. That takes experience . And Davis a natural 4, how in the world can you say he can’t play the 4 at 6-11 with a incredible wingspan? He’s still really young so him getting into the 230’s is likely so were looking at a 6’11 230-240 big with supreme athletic ability and a great defender/shot blocker/rebounder with good offensive potential and an incredible wingspan. Hardly undersized , the way you sound is as though you would have take Joe Smith over KG back in the day… Which is sad

His frame will fill out

If that is what is holding you back from liking him I feel so sorry for you, if he even gained 10 more lbs which isn’t that hard under an NBA weight training regiment he easily guards 4’s , it’s not just his size though, the guy knows how to play defense. He’s got it down pretty well.

And AR can’t guard 4’s on the outside, so what would he be ? He guards PF’s better then SF’s

Bosh, Aldridge, Pau, Dirk, KG?

All had similar frames when drafted.

Some guys work hard, fill out like KG, some don’t like AR.

A lot of hype on Davis is around the fact he;s athletic, skilled and has a high level of maturity work ethic like Rose, Durant, KG etc.

by tafkasam on Jan 16, 2012 3:24 PM PST up reply actions

for reference

pre-draft measurements-

LMA (after 2 years college)- 6-11.25, (7ft4 wingspan) 234 lbs

Bosh- 6-11.25 (7-3 wingspan), 225lb

Amare- 6-10, 233 lbs

Davis at the moment measures almost identical to Bosh and KG at their age. Similar athleticism.

The question is motor/desire and every scout is exceptionally high on him because he possesses those things, things AR and Wright didn’t.

I large frame (BW was a stick figure without a wide upper body, Davis is a stick figure with wide shoulders)

Aggressiveness , BW was always a deer in headlights while Davis is never afraid of anything

Dominant interior defense, Davis shuts down the paint while BW was just a great weak side defender. Davis also is a stronger rebounder

BW did show more offensive potential

BW would have been a star if he played with attitude and didn’t have an injury problem

BW was always passive soft. Davis is physical, aggressive and tough. He’ll fill out. Unlikely he’ll ever resemble Amare or Blake, but Bosh or KG isn’t out of question.

Jones at his best is superstar

As is Davis’ possibilities, but I do not like the histories of PF/C that weigh less than 220. You can always point to Garnett, but they are different players. Skinny centers can’t hold their own defensively. He does not have great offensive game, Jones is bigger and already has an impressive offensive game.

Rubio's a good defender. He's active, a ball hawk and a pest.

The Euro reports were accurate on that as well as elite vision and ball handling. Good set 3pt shooter, and sneaky getting into the lane. He doesn’t really take bad shots.

He’s a great pick up for Minny, but I’m sad I can’t make fun of Kahn anymore.

I don't know

I think he’s looked like a rookie. Landry fields (who isn’t the most athletic SG) embarrassed him.

I think he’s shown good activity though, and with a staff who preaches D first, he’s much more likely to become a good positional defender than a lot of our guys who had years of Nellieball.

Its alot of project’s in this draft. I’ve seen enough projects go wrong. Give me a proven product.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 15, 2012 11:42 PM PST up reply actions

Lamb, Barnes, Sullinger and Gilchrist are all pretty proven

And since you brought up Drummond and McAdoo I will point out they are bigger projects then anyone of the guys I named

Gimme a whole lotta Lamb.

And taking proven products his essentially what has hurt us

Udoh over Monroe

Ike over Bynum

Klay over Kawhi

Smith over KG etc

Klay is better than Kawhi. Soon you’ll agree.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 15, 2012 11:56 PM PST up reply actions

I hope so

But I doubt we will think that. Nothing would make me happier.

by pericles31081 on Jan 15, 2012 11:58 PM PST up reply actions

I dont know about that

Kawhi is a shut down defender, good rebounder and starting for a contender

Klay right now looks like a shooter who plays decent defense (on his good nights) that makes really casual looking mistakes. Either way Leonard would have filled a bigger need

Klay does make dumb passes at times. I cant make a excuse for that. I do think he’ll shoot over 40% for his career and will have a better all around game than Kawhi.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 16, 2012 12:06 AM PST up reply actions

Assuming they both end up well ..

Rebounding – Leonard

Defense – Leonard

Slashing – Leonard

IQ – Leonard

Shooting – Klay

Size – Leonard

Versatility – Leonard

What about passing? Leonard was passed for the same reason Lacob was not high on Gerald Wallace and Chris Singleton. Wing defenders with limited offense are cheaper less valuable in a trade than a guy with Klay’s skill set. The Klay pick was a gift to Jerry West so if you want to blame somebody blame the logo. That was his pick.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 16, 2012 12:44 AM PST up reply actions

Fine Klay gets passing

And Leonard’s offense will come, he already has vastly improved his jumper from a year ago, give him a season or two to get adjusted then he will be perfectly fine

And how can he be less valuable when he has been so much better? And I blame the FO for letting the logo make a call which shouldn’t have been his to make

I agree with you. I think Gerald Wallace is more valuable than Kevin Martin. If both reach their peaks that will be what they turn into.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 16, 2012 12:49 AM PST up reply actions

but to stay with your point

It took years for Gerald Wallace to prove to be a better player than KMart and for every Crash Wallace, their are a million stromileswift/AR’s etc. All the tools, and no brains

by tafkasam on Jan 16, 2012 3:34 PM PST up reply actions

So blame Lacob for bringing in West.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 16, 2012 10:05 AM PST up reply actions

And MJ> Drexler

Why even bring that up?

I’ve seen enough projects go wrong. Give me a proven product.

Bynum was a project. Dwight was a project.

Derrick Rose averaged 12 and 5 in college. Westbrook was worse with 2 years of college.

I’m not saying draft on potential, but I’m saying a kid with high potential and the right mental make up is a great gamble. Guys like AR and DeMarcus has maturity questions (albiet completely DIFFERENT levels of them), BWright was always thought to be ‘too passive’, and I don’t think you can over come that.

My point is, the days of polished college stars like Duncan, are few and far between.

by tafkasam on Jan 16, 2012 3:32 PM PST up reply actions

Bynum was a project. Dwight never was. He came in the league doing his thang. Demarcus dominated his peers so he dont count. You dont have to be polished, all you have to do is show you can just about score at will or whatever your specialty is at will. I dont like Bigs that weigh less than Charles Jenkins.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 16, 2012 6:25 PM PST up reply actions

I dont like Bigs that weigh less than Charles Jenkins.

You must have not liked KG or Bosh. Both weighed less, and more or less exact same as Davis…

Just saying, you’re being extremely superficial. KG and AR had same body. BW and Bosh had same body. SLIGHT difference in game.

You can’t teach intelligence, motor or desire. I think Davis has all 3. The size will come

by tafkasam on Jan 17, 2012 7:42 AM PST up reply actions

I’ll admit, AR and BW ruined me on skinny bigs.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 17, 2012 9:49 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah right. He could start over DW maybe. No way he starts over Lee. Lee is dropping big numbers on pro’s nightly, Jones aint even dropping big numbers on college freshman.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 15, 2012 11:57 PM PST up reply actions

Seeing as though there isn't a center this year that is a stupid thing to say

And Gilchrist will be better then DW, Lamb will be really good and Sullinger will be a longtime starter

Anthony Davis at the very least is a awesome weak side defender who is a good rebounder

Randolph and Broken Wing were awesome weak side defenders and rebounders in college.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 15, 2012 11:43 PM PST up reply actions

BW never played with Davis' histle and AR is way dumber then Davis

Essentially he had what they didn’t have which was the heart and brains to play in the NBA. That is why people love him, he goes after, he’s very smart and he combines that with his natural ability

You know what I just noticed guys? Warriors management probably won’t even draft Davis with a #1 pick.

by DubsFan408 on Jan 16, 2012 12:35 AM PST reply actions

They would not. They would probably take Barnes as would I.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 16, 2012 12:45 AM PST up reply actions

Hmm

It’s a tough call. But Barnes isn’t exactly dominating himself.

I like both a lot. My top 2 picks.

by tafkasam on Jan 16, 2012 3:35 PM PST up reply actions

Barnes and Lamb

Will be the two best players in the draft.

Gilchrist will also be a really good player

Gotta be bottom 4 to be truly safe

The flipside of this is that even if we were the 5th worst team, if 3 teams jumped us in the lottery, we’d end up with the 8th pick and lose it. Correct?
While this is statistically unlikely, the Warriors have been frequently unlucky in this regard of late so I wouldn’t want to chance even being the 7th worst team. All it takes is one team below us moving up through the lottery to have the worst possible outcome of all.
If we tank (or simply sufficiently suck), it better get us to at least the 6th worst record. Man, do I really hate thinking this way :0(
Go Warriors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
