Warriors still stand by Udoh over Monroe
That is just how I read it, I feel like the Samhan workout is just an excuse for a reason to not pick him

Warriors still stand by Udon over Monroe
What choice do they have? Can they get a do over if they didn’t stand by the decision?
The time to worry about this stuff is before the draft, not after. Right now they should be discussing how they are gonna retain their draft pick this year and not worry about spilled noodles.

haha I like how you misspelled Udoh's name as Udon
And then proceeded to use a spilled noodles metaphor.
I’m pretty sure the pun was intentional. (Unlike Riley, Skep knows what he’s doing…)
There will be no extra point!

saving your job?
that’s the only time I could think of…
“you know, we always liked Udoh, but he just never developed” <—very similar to what Riley says in the article
It’s not Riley’s fault, see? It’s because Udoh didn’t develop himself

If you're at the point of admitting mistakes to save your job
you’re going to to lose your job either way.

God I hope this is true
I have zero faith in Riley…possibly less than zero

look at the bright side
at least we didn’t pick aminu nor Wesley Johnson.

Wes wasn't available
So why even bring him up ?
And there was this guy named Paul George there you know… And we never even bothered looking at him

the point is, there is no sure thing, even a #1 draft pick
they come in cheap, so just be happy as they produce. Only one team get lucky with Paul George, and Warriors never has any luck, so having Udoh is actually very acceptable.
And what so bad about Aminu? I am sure tons of people will hate him if it is in Warriors uniform.

Well I would hope so.
It’d be pretty stupid of them to come out and say they don’t stand by their decisions before Udoh’s rookie contract runs out.

Food for thought
I posted this in the game thread, but found this interesting since the Udoh vs Monroe debate raged on since draft night.
So I decided to track their match up. When they were matched up on on one, these were the outcomes:
Udoh playing defense, Monroe on offense: Udoh stopped Monroe from scoring twice, while Monroe scored on Udoh once.
Udoh playing offense, Monroe playing defense: Udoh scored on Monroe once, and Monroe stopped Ekpe from scoring once
I think both team’s got what they wanted out of the draft pick. Detroit, being offensively challenged, drafted Monroe to provide that scoring punch. GSW, as we all know, has had well documented trouble on defense, so they drafted Udoh, the best defender available. Fair or not, these two players will be compared next to each other by GSW fans for their whole careers. Monroe will always have the superior statistics, though, because Udoh’s contributions to his team’s success are not something that can be measured. All in all, hindsight is 20/20 and we’ve got Udoh while Detroit has Monroe. I guess we can make a judgment when all is said and done.

I posted my comment there, but in short
The real problem with this is that we were trying to get Lee and that influenced our decision to draft Udoh over Monroe. We coud be sitting here with Steph and Monroe as our core, instead of Steph and Lee. Had we not signed Lee, we would have had massive cap room to sign someone like Nene to play next to Monroe. Oh, well. Spilled milk now.
J-RIDAH: Its not 1 player in this draft better than Monta or Lee. Anthony Davis is no different than Al Farouq Aminu. Andre Drummond could be good but he is not impressive at this point at all besides his size. This draft is hella overated.
Agreed
you NEVER pick on ‘need’ over talent, unless you have some sort of title contending core. Ask Portland how much they like taking Oden over Durant (because they projected Durant as a similar player to LMA). We did not, so the logic in Udoh over Monroe is disgusting. Furthermore, Riley basing his judgements on 1-2 work outs is even more disgusting. Film/game time should take precedent.
In my opinion, Riley’s drafting is no different than Saint Jean or the host of other jokers Cohan hired who think 15 years behind their times. No talent evaluation. No idea how to run a cap or team. No creativity

Or Chandler next to Monroe. Now that'd be interesting.

Nene and Monroe would be a pretty bad defensive front line. I’d still would have gone for Chandler or Jordan if we had drafted Monroe.
by Slightly Hyphy on Jan 17, 2012 8:16 AM PST up reply actions
yeah, you're probably right about that
so whatever, Chandler and Monroe. Maybe eventually Bogut and Monroe. Anyway, it won’t happen now.

we could have had Chuck Hayes and Lee

We could have Billups or Tracy

My issue was always that it was a low ceiling pick. Old dude that didn’t produce impressively in college….and you pick him #6? Why? Udoh was a fine pick as a role player, but if your franchise is picking #6, you don’t need role players. You need game changers.

my problem with our last two drafts
is that we seem to be drafting for need, instead of best player available.
It’s just a philosophy, but I disagree with the direction the FO seems to be taking towards drafts. Now, I love Udoh, and am not nearly ready to label Klay as anything other than a rookie, but Monroe and Leonard would have been nice pickups

One thing glaringly obvious about Monroe’s game: he’s a horrendously bad defender. Like, disgustingly bad. I haven’t looked at numbers, but I don’t feel like I’m going out on a limb saying that he’s among the absolute worst starting Centers in the league, defensively.
If we’d have picked Monroe, I guarantee that a lot of us would be whining about Monroe’s “empty numbers” and how we needed defense but Riley grabbed Monroe instead, who didn’t fill that need at all.

Can't say I disagree with the Warriors choice
They want a bigger, stronger Center as an anchor. Monroe isn’t that person, the similarities in Monroe’s game and David Lee makes that frontcourt a bad combination.
On that same note, I agree with everyone here saying we should be drafting talent over need since we can always trade talent or modify the team structure around it but the Warriors probably didn’t see stardom in Monroe’s future. So did the W’s fail to assess potential? I guess… Is it a big deal? Not really… Let’s move on

They want a bigger, stronger Center as an anchor
This is where I disagree with their WHOLE philosophy. They should have wanted the best basketball player, period. Make it fit later via trades or signings. The only pick we’ve made in last 5 years where we applied this logic was Curry and go figure, it worked despite all the criticism of ‘we don’t need 2 small guards’
yup
and who’s to say that Monroe and Lee wouldn’t work out?
I’d be more willing to buy their whole ‘defensive anchor" angle, if they didn’t spend their first pick this year on (yet another) shooter

From Pistons blog
But the reasons Golden State did not select Monroe still apply. He’s not the big body, physical big man they envision.
Greg Monroe is roughly of average size for an NBA center. We’ve covered this at DBB. He’s also YOUNG and will get bigger. Further, anyone who says Greg Monroe is not a physical player is a liar. A damn liar.
Being more of a power forward (or a high-post center), he clashes with David Lee’s skills a bit.
I’m not the only Pistons fans who would have LOVED to try and make this front-court work together.
The Warriors desperately need defense and Udoh provides it. He certainly did Sunday. His line: 27 minutes (season-high), 10 points, six rebounds, four blocks (season-high) and three steals. Udoh helped hold Monroe scoreless in the fourth quarter.
See? The one career game they have played against each other CLEARLY proves drafting Udoh over Monroe was not a mistake.
Riley said Udoh won’t be judged by Monroe. A couple team sources said they take solace in the fact that Udoh is still a good draft pick even if Monroe may have the sexier numbers.
Translation: We don’t judge Udoh by Monroe because it makes us look like complete idiots.
But Udoh, the Warriors hope, will develop his scoring and rebounding and make up the difference with his intangibles.
Ah, yes. The "intaginbles" argument. The fall-back argument of last resort.
This article is the literary equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and yelling "LALALALA" as loud as you can.
