On Winning Without Stephen Curry:
"That's what the good teams do. In spite of adversity they find a way to get it done. When you compete and defend, you will win your fair share of games in this league."
On Playing His Reserves:
"I have to hold guys responsible if they're not getting it done. We gave up 21 points in the first part of the third quarter, and then we shut them down. They finished with 29 (points) in the third quarter, and 21 (of those points) were on our starters, and that's unacceptable. I give my guys credit. I've been on teams where the starters would have been upset, saying different things, and quit (on the team). The guys that went in won us the ball game, and the starters came back and sealed the deal. It was just a great team effort."
On Brandon Rush:
"He just battles. (He) knocks down shots, doesn't make mistakes, (he's) a beast on the defensive end, (and has) a high IQ."
On Monta Ellis:
"He's a gamer; he's just an absolute gamer. He didn't have a great night offensively, but still battled, competed and made plays. He put his face in there, no pun intended, to make a play, and that's what winners do."
On Klay Thompson:
"He played great. He gave us a chance defensively, and he's a shooter. I like the fact that he's not turning down shots I'll tell him when he's shooting bad ones, but I like the fact that he's aggressive."
On Andris Biedrins:
"(How he played) won't show up on the stats sheet, but the bottom line is that he battled, jumped out, and got the ball of the guards' hands...He was phenomenal tonight."
David Lee
On Tonight's Game:
"The two teams were playing hard, and it (came down to) which team blinked first. I thought our starters really didn't play well to start the third quarter, and our reserves came in and did an unbelievable job keeping us in the game and getting us the lead back. When it was our (the starters) turn to come back in we took care of business in the end."
On The Play Of The Reserves In The Third Quarter:
"Give Cleveland credit. They've been playing well, they were at home, they made a run to start the third, but it was our second unit versus their second unit and we did an unbelievable job getting back in the game."
Monta Ellis
On His Performance:
"It was just a bad shooting night for me. The whole team shot bad, but we did it on the defensive end. I was able to get what I wanted, but the (shots) weren't falling."

If you told me Monta would go 2-12
And the Warriors win, I’d call you crazy
extrabaggs
"Just your typical Giants scoring rally: A faceburger on the basepaths, two errors from the second baseman and a bases-loaded balk."
Only 2 made shots from Monta sounds like a sure loss, but on only 12 attempts sounds like a win is possible. Especially against the Cavs.

True.
One of the most frustrating things about Monta is his tendency to not realize when he doesn’t have it and to just keep jacking shots up.
Glad to see he didn’t do that tonight.

almost did though in the 2nd half
couple of times he settled for poor shots and Lee or Beans were able to get the offensive board.
But I think Nate and Marc got through to him to cycle the ball and feed the hot hand and let the game come to him in flow

Often when Monta make a couple of outside shots in a row because I fear he will never stop chucking...
Last night when his shooting % hit 17% he mysteriously figured that perhaps he did not need to “take over” the game in time to let the team win the game….
If he works on this recognition perhaps the other Warriors can develope.

WW should go to our bench.
I would have gone with Lee with the near 30-10 game, but 3 +/ suggests he wasn’t as great as the production suggests.

As always, be very careful about judging a single player based on their +/- from a single game.
It’s simply not a meaningful metric at that level. In the long run, these things average out, but in a one-game sample the variation in the nine other players on the floor’s production is just too much.
but – 3 +/- suggests he wasn’t as great as the production suggests.
No, it doesn’t really suggest that. I’m kind of surprised that plus/minus has worked its way into the standard box score because it’s not all that helpful on a game by game basis. Sure, it’s nice to have the extra info, but it certainly doesn’t tell you enough that a -3 should negate a 29 and 9 game.
by olympicmike on Jan 17, 2012 10:48 PM PST up reply actions
thats why i prefer the 82games.com unit by unit +/-
they have production broken down by each 5-man, 4-man, 3-man group that was on the floor so you can see just exactly who was efficient and who has been slacking
like maybe Lee/Beans/Monta/Nate/Dorell was +14 last night in about 15 minutes
but
Lee/Monta/Nate/Mcguire/Udoh was -10 last night in about 10 minutes
see what I’m saying?

there still a poor team
They won’t be around in playoff season I can guarantee you that.
I can't help being glad when they win a game they're supposed to win
It’s always deflating when they win against good teams, then come out flat against, and lose to, poor ones.

I LOVE it every time the warriors win
Its what I look forward to all day every day.
But what I’m tryin to say here is, we should not get too emotionally charged because we beat down the cavs. GSW is a decent ball club in this league and we should be able to compete in anyone. That also means we should be putting teams like the Cavs, Pistons, Nets, Bobcats and the suns away.
Unfortunately, we have got off to pretty bad start and lost to some very beatable teams. Its expected you can’t win em all, but as a ball club we should be aspiring to win these type of games “easily.”
but as a ball club we should be aspiring to win these type of games "easily."
exactly. So that’s why retaining the draft pick is so important. If you enjoy these wins that means you are happy with the team the way it is which has proved to be less than ideal. Watching our scrubs beat their scrubs is a pretty cheap date, not worth getting excited about but if accepted it does let management off the hook for any meaningful improvement.

you are correct
I agree with everything you have said.
I assume you have been following the warriors for quite a while and must be feeling dejected year in year out.
Personally, I have followed the warriors since about 2005 (when by dad bought be NBa2006 on Playstation). I am still a “fresh” fan and possibly a little bit niave. I still believe the warriors behind Steph, Monta and Lee can go a long way. I honestly believe we can make the playoffs and give it a good shake. If we can acquire a decent Centre, we will be feared. Thats just what I think. I admit i could be wrong, but I’m going to dream.
Regarding management, i have been against all there moves since breaking up the WE BELIEVE squad (except for Curry). They certainly don’t deserve to be let off the hook.!
no offense
you have a point. But you became a Warriors fans thru Playstation, interesting. I guess you base your opinion to how they perform in 2k12 nowadays. I see your disappointment. I guess you can’t beat Lebron and the Heat when you are playing online. Well most Kids I play online either use the Heat or the Bulls. They are tough to beat

refresh my mind
did the Warriors intentionally break up the We Believe. Or the disgruntle player did. BD does not want to resign with the Warriors. Monta got the offseason injury. Ninja Turtle does not want to play with the Warriors and we got Jamal Crawford back (which is doing well with decent team). Then Action Jackson sign a 3 years extension then request a trade. Then we draft Curry. We got a new owner and its a new dawn. On the bright side Baron Davis is still injured right now. Jackson playing with the Bucks but ask for an extension which is a jackass move because he still got like 2 years in his contract. Ellis is stil with the team and Beans too. Ninja Turtle and J_rich is the only bright side on their respective team. So stop living in the past move on.

then the Warriors got a 48 Wins
with Jrich and a better big man they’d have gotten enough to make the playoffs again and go farther. If you don’t believe me ask nellie who has stated that they missed Jason in the playoff chase. Remember they only got SJax and TMNT halfway thru the playoff season so never really saw the full potential of that group.
You don’t build teams by destroying their chemistry after the first playoff appearance, you build teams by building on the experience and tweaking what was missing which was a big man , not Jrich who showed up for the playoffs.

Getting a 48 wins
hence to getting a 40 wins before that, take us to the playoffs. Means that the West is so deep that year that even thou we got J-Rich in the roster does not guaranteed us another playoff run. My point is what is done is done, so move on. Stop crying over spill milk and move on to this We Believe stuff. So far our organization is doing all it can, to get us back on track.

but that really irked the players
specifically Baron and Capt Jack who were no doubt the leaders and ruined the player relations with the upper powers and they started to take it out on Nellie to get out of there.
the fact that Wright was such a question mark and only fulfilled his critics promises to the maximum possibility only magnified the tension.
that trade indeed sparked all those players leaving/getting traded in 2-3 years except for Monta

Eh. Obviously Wright was the wrong choice. But it’s hard to look at the Utah series and feel like we hadn’t just hit our ceiling – any team with size would do that to us. So we made a move to get bigger. It was a risky move, but people need to stop pretending that the “We Believe” team could have gone any further than that with Matt Barnes playing 4.

Our roster is not as flawed as people make it out to be. We have the ability to beat good teams, so we should be putting easy teams away without too much stress.
we arent as bad as the record has suggest.
only maybe 1 or 2 lost were with the full team and even then players we’ren’t to their max. all i am saying is that if we play to our full potential (i.e. healthy) then our record would suggest a .500 or more win team.

Klay, he was really moving well without the ball.
Also Dorell Wright looked awesome, was really being aggressive and trying to get to the basket.
Andris looked great as well, doing his thing on the glass and defensive end without fouling.
DLee was unstoppable on offense, average on defense.

Second Great Team Win in a Row! Everyone chipped in! Bench had 50 points! Lee was balling, leading, and carrying the team all over!
Monta had another bad shooting night, but it seems everyone picked their game up! Lee is definitely carrying this team this year! Another awesome game for him. Thompson finally came through. Rush and Nate were outstanding. Wright had some problems with shooting but made up in other play. Udoh, Bievins, OK. Great TEAM win! Tank what?

Notice how bad we would be if we had used amnesty on Andris. We’d have NO real big man. Andris was +18 this game and made a HUGE difference. Also, DLee is legit this year. He seems to be moving his feet more on defense. Not so legit, though, as a center!

We are, what, a fifth of the way thru this season and some here want to throw away what we have on a chance for Harrison Barnes? If we had a fifth of a season left and were in the bottom 7or8, fine. But not now. Let these guys come together as a team. Our best chance of improving is making the playoffs, trading well, and attracting FA(s).
Besides, life is too short to root against your own team.

I’m too much a homer to want anything but a win. I still believe, a little, these guys can go far with some tweaking and some luck. Tanking might bring a talent next year but it would make those who are here now want to leave. I don’t want to believe that is any way to build a contender.
Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
let them leave
this team needs to rebuild. we arent going to get higher then a 7th seed with a core of curry, ellis, and lee. we would probably need a guy like dwight howard in the mix with those 3 to have a shot at a title. im ready to ship off monta, and lee while his play is masking the bling of his contract for some draft picks. the only guys worth keeping to build around are steph, klay, dorrell (if he finds his game again), and jenkins.

We win :)
Everybody was good besides Udoh and Monta
Lee is having a solid stretch of games, but Monta’s shooting seems to just continue to drop. It really wasn’t that much of a problem before. But this game and the Charlotte game especially, he’s just seemed out of it. I’m really hoping that when Curry returns he’ll snap out of the shooting funk, which seems to be translating to a more overall funk at times. His defense is still continuing to be improved, as is his passing, but for stretches he seems to just turn the ball over at will at miss every jump shot he takes. Through all that, he’s still helping us, but it’d be nice to see him performing to the best of his capabilities, especially as a scorer. He’s had 1 good half out of 6 on this trip, and we’re 2-1, so it says something to our bench and David Lee, who have both been playing well in the past two games. It also says something about our competition, who were 2 of the worst teams in the NBA last year.
Still, there are signs to be optimistic. A win in New Jersey would continue that trend, and provide something to look forward to with 10 of the next 12 at home.

As much as I like Udoh
you are right. I think Udoh game is more like Turiaf… block a lot of shot. But forget to grab some board.

well i think it was just his overall game today.
wasn’t playing aggressive at all. offense and defense wise. just a bad game. but we’ve seen better games where he did grab a fair share of rebounds and blocks too

yeah he was just having a bad night
he typically isn’t a great rebounder, but tonight he was batting them all over the place and letting the cavaliers tip it back at the basket

Udoh would have been a decent high second round pick.
Monroe would helped this team.

Good win with solid play from everyone except Monta and Udoh. Tomorrow will be an interesting game. Time for the Marshon Brooks vs. Klay Thompson comparisons.
Marshon has that won by a mile
most experts have him ranked top 5 rookies, some even top 3

He is playing for one of the worst teams/offenses in the NBA
and getting twice as many minutes as Klay. I would say his numbers are more a product of his situation than evidence that he’s better than Klay
http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/
Though, to his credit he’s blown away the “inefficient, one-dimensional chucker” label he got around draft time. He’s shooting efficiently at a high volume and rebounding at a good rate. Defense needs work, but most rookies aren’t great at that end anyway. He’s playing well and he’s earned his minutes, IMO.
Not hard to earn minutes for that team.
But I wouldn’t argue that he’s playing poorly. It’s just a lot easier to do with regular minutes and a bigger role in the offense. Klay has to try to fit in to his role off the bench, while Brooks gets a lot more free run, meaning he isn’t benched for simple mistakes.
http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/
actually he does, check his game log, it took so long for him just to earn starters minutes
and his minutes have been sporadically distributed.
one thing you must also note, Klay has talent around him. In New Jersey its Marshon and Deron and seldom have they been on the floor together. So teams are either keying on Deron or Marshon. Thats how much respect he has earned as a threat already. Doc Rivers had the Celtics trapping him by the second quarter when they played.
All i’m saying is if Monta cant handle his height then dont be surprised if he drops 18 and 8(rebounds) on 10 or less shots

I didn't even expect Monta to be guarding him very often lol
and Klay has talent around him yes, but he’s not really a cutter. He’s a guy who comes off screens as a shooter. Different kind of player. I just think Brooks success has to judged a little by players who have put up similar numbers in similar situations. Nick Young, DeRozan have had similar stretches, even in their rookie seasons. And I’m sure you remember what Jennings did in his first month. It’s just hard to be impressed by a player this early on when it’s for such a poor offensive team.
http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/
I think Klay will improve step by step...Curry took a while his rookie year.(after Monta was injured)
Not convince that he was the best pick though…

2-1 on this trip...
After that Charlotte game I’m shocked they have a chance to come home with a winning record on this trip. As for tonight, Lee and Andris get my unofficial WW for tonight. They closed out the game, Lee on offense and Andris on D.
It was great to see Jackson finally get Biedrins some meaningful minutes in the fourth. He played great, and hopefully coach will have more confidence in him at the end of games.
I have to say, at the time I was not a fan of leaving that bench unit in from about the 8 minute mark in the third all the way into the early fourth, without even mixing in a couple starters, but considering they were able to scrape together some + minutes and let the starters win it in the fourth it bodes well for tomorrow night. It was ugly at times, but they were able to create turnovers and finish in transition.
Nate did a good job of finding Klay and others when they got free. Any time you can get double digit assists from him it’s a huge bonus. He’s a spark-plug, but he’s not a natural distributor.
One other interesting note. Just before the stretch where Jackson went with the bench unit in the third, he took out Biedrins and replaced him with McGuire. In the next minute and a half the Warriors were -9. Right after AB went out Lee let Varejao grab the offensive board off a missed FT and sent him to the line. Right after that the defense backed off of Dom and he took it into the lane and put up an ugly brick, then goes running back on D and fouls. Next play down Dom gets blocked inside. It was a big momentum shift, and it was immediately obvious that they were missing Dre.
'not a natural distributor'
are you referring to the threatened species, the ‘pure point guard ’? Has Robinson been any more unnatural as a distributor than Ellis ? Is there a ’natural distributor’ guard on the team — probably not. Setting aside Ellis’ one man fast breaks, Robinson seems to run the break more smoothly, and his 2-on-1’s with Rush in the third quarter were part of the turning point in the game. Maybe we get to see a reformed Robinson this season, if getting jettisoned by three teams led to a bit of self criticism. Is he turning the ball over less than either Ellis or Curry, as it appears ?
Music is the Healing Force of the Universe (a.ayler)
Dude the entire league is looking for "pure" PGs; only ones on this team are Nate and Jenkins!
Bothe, Monta and Curry came up as shooting guards…
are you referring to the threatened species, the ‘pure point guard ’?
No, not really. Simply saying that Nate has been best as a scoring guard off the bench, and you shouldn’t expect him to come in and get everyone involved. I’m not saying he can’t, but it hasn’t been his game, so I see it as a nice unexpected bonus.
Has Robinson been any more unnatural as a distributor than Ellis ? Is there a ’natural distributor’ guard on the team
Not if you think of “natural distributor” as a pure point, but that’s not how I meant it. While they have been turning it over more often than Nate thus far, it has been Steph’s role to run the offense and find the open man, and Monta has been making an effort to set up others with his drive and dish game. Both assist at a higher rate than Robinson, which I don’t think should be any surprise. It’s not a knock on Nate, but that’s not the strong point of his game, and it’s not really what he’s been expected to do for most of his career. I’m happy to have him as a high energy guy off the bench that finds a way to put up some points for that second unit.
Maybe we get to see a reformed Robinson this season, if getting jettisoned by three teams led to a bit of self criticism.
Hey, that would be great. I’m not going to hold my breath, but I’d obviously love that.
Is he turning the ball over less than either Ellis or Curry, as it appears ?
Yep, he’s turning it over less, and creating less for his teammates. His per minute assists are up and turnovers are down so far in his 200+ minutes this season, but he’s still looking to score out there (as he probably should).

Rec'd Mike...good points....glad to see Jenkins get a chance to develope.
Siver lining to Curry’s injuries. As Dorell’s disappearance has given Klay a chance to work through the rookie rust…..wish there was a way to develope Tyler…D League or some minutes?

It should be said that the W’s really did get lucky tonight. The Cavs took themselves out of this game with 23 turnovers, and so many of them were unforced errors.
damn
we need to keep losing… Need to retake our lottery draft pick from the Jazz! OKay people let me have it… Everyone is going to call me out for this. Oh well then so be it.

I would like to say that on moral grounds I am not in support of tanking.
I never will be, tanking is the worst thing about the NBA. I think a new system should be devised to prevent it. I watch basketball to see two teams playing hard for a win, whether they are a 50 win team or a 20 win team.
The only way I would be pro the Warriors “Tanking” is if they decided to rebuild by getting rid of their big contracts and replacing them with expiring. I would still expect the team to try its hardest to win every game, they would just be legitimately bad. When you have a mediocre team like the Warriors who probably are not bad enough to get a good pick and are not good enough to make it very far in the playoffs(or at all) I expect them to play up to their talent level and try to win every game. It is the Front Offices decision to upgrade or strategically downgrade the roster, the players should always play hard.
I don’t like the calls for “tanking” because that implies that the team should try to lose right now, even with the roster we have. We can complain about the FO’s moves all we want an I agree with many complaints about the Warrior’s FO, but we should never expect our current players to play below their skill level for the organization and we shouldn’t ask the coach to bench good players for no reason.
There is a right way to tank and that is to have a legitimately terrible team, but to root for your own team to try and lose games on purpose is in my opinion against my nature as a sport’s fan. I don’t follow basketball to watch players try to lose the entire reason I watch basketball is to watch players try to win.

nobody expects players to purposefully play bad
thats not the tanking we are calling for. personally i would rather have us trade our big contracts, and try to stock pile as many draft picks as possible. when you get rid of your good players tanking comes naturally.
How old are you? Most of us in here want to get to the playoffs the next few years, and, maybe see a championship again before we die!
We’ve been waiting a long time, already!
im 26 hopefully im not dying anytime soon
id much rather have another crappy season and retaion our draft pick for the biggest draft since the lebron, wade, bosh draft and hopefully draft a potential star. rather then squeezing into the playoffs with 2 guards that play no defense and a center that prays to hit the rim when shooting free throws.
Ha! No worries mate/mekanikal...doubt if we will squeeze into the playoffs this year.
Also doubt if we will manage to get a 1rst round draft pick as well….

I think it is strange that Warrior fans come onto a blog dedicated to Warrior fans
hoping to see their team lose. Look I disagree probably more with the FO than an average Warrior fan, I have not liked a lot of the moves since the draft and I have wanted a different back-court situation for over a year. This team is built to be mediocre that is the problem. I always want the Warriors to win because I am a fan of the team. If they are going to rebuild they need to commit to it by getting a worse roster filled with expiring contracts and draft picks. I am okay with losing when the talent level is bad, I will still root for the team in each individual game, that is the rational way to rebuild. Tanking is losing on purpose which I can never stand for.

Here is how i differ from you in regards to "how" the tank should happen.
We tank not by telling monta to chuck up some airballs and stand still on defense. We tank by playing our young guys some MEANINGFUL minutes during each game.. Develope Tyler, Jeknkins, Klay and any other unknown with a solid 20 minutes each.. Then let our vets play hard and possibly win the games if they can..
But those late season games that we go 8-2 on , when the other team is bound for the playoffs , and ARE NOT EVEN TRYING, is a disgusting way to rack up a handful of meaningless wins and screw our chances of gettting the better talent out of the draft.

We pay them enough to ask them to do whatever we need them to do.If losing games is what we need they should be professional enough to figure out how to do it. Not wanting a high draft pick just tells me they have no interest in the team and are only playing for themselves so we gotta watch out for our own interests.

Good win today!
The team came together and played in sync to cover for Monta’s off-game. Charlotte was tired and our quick-hitting style of play got us the win. The defense is getting sharper, but it is still mostly soft.
"You ever see a bumper sticker on a Maybach?" said by Warrior's rookie Charles Jenkins when an ESPN reporter asked why he had no tattoos.
