Biedrins: Beasting on the boards and on D?

Am I the only one who thinks Biedrins is playing very well on defense and rebounding wise this year? His offense is still timid at best but he's doing a great job blocking shots and cleaning up misses on both ends amirite?

his increase in body mass has definitely been a prime reason

But he is still way off from his best. Too many fouls and too soft on the offensive end is hurting us for sure.

by maryjane on Jan 18, 2012 9:58 PM PST reply actions

he has definitely improved from last season but that's not saying much...

But i wouldn’t go as far as saying he is goin good in those areas. He just doesn’t hussle enough. Kwame with all his limitations, hussled big for us. He didn’t mind getting down and dirty. These are the qualities Beans needs to incorporate into his game. Teams like the clippers, blazers, nets and even bucks who have some strong big men…. Will beast on us…

by maryjane on Jan 19, 2012 2:42 AM PST up reply actions

i agree. he's earned a definite bump in playing time. same with ekpe

but he’s been seriously limiting his playing time with all those fouls

having kwame/beans at center this year full time would have been nice. but we can never ask for too much… we’re warriors fans, remember?

It's lonely being the only Warriors fan at UMass :(

He definitely warrants more minutes

In general, his activity level has been better, and it shows on glass.

His play with Lee hasn’t been great, and we can’t use him and udohnal together. Still no reason Udohnal should play more than him.

by tafkasam on Jan 18, 2012 10:02 PM PST reply actions

except

tonight he got 3 rebounds in 17 minutes and the difference in the game was the W’s getting CRUSHED on the boards.

by joegiant on Jan 19, 2012 2:00 AM PST reply actions

his rebounding has been great

but 9% USG and averaging 16 minutes, uh, not so much

why 16 minutes? why 9% USG?

J-RIDAH: Its not 1 player in this draft better than Monta or Lee. Anthony Davis is no different than Al Farouq Aminu. Andre Drummond could be good but he is not impressive at this point at all besides his size. This draft is hella overated.

by Evanz on Jan 19, 2012 5:25 AM PST reply actions

against NJ he had 0 PF but only played 20 minutes

He’s only gotten 5 fouls once (and fouled out that time)

My guess is it’s just matchups that MJ likes or doesn’t like

His rate numbers this year are fab

Per 36
8.7 points
.693 true shooting %
12.7 rebounds
1.8 steals
2.8 blocks
0.8 turnovers
+10.29 apm (best on the team, sss alert)
+8.04 defensive rtg (best on the team, sss alert)

But yeah, if he’s playing only 16 minutes a game, it’s not helping us that much.

There will be no extra point!

by Sleepy Freud on Jan 19, 2012 7:04 AM PST reply actions

Fouls

5.9 per 36, he’s been getting in early foul trouble.

by tafkasam on Jan 19, 2012 7:21 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, but at 5.9 per 36 he still should be playing more than 16 minutes a game. Heck, he could play a full 36 minutes a game and still have 10% of a foul to give!

There will be no extra point!

by Sleepy Freud on Jan 19, 2012 7:45 AM PST up reply actions

i don’t see the point of pulling a player who picks up 2 early fouls if you’re not going to play them at the end of the game anyways. just play him until he fouls out, you’ll still be playing the 4th quarter without him.

in my opinion, a lot of coaches don’t understand that. they just think “2 fouls, gotta bench him” when the whole reasoning behind benching players in foul trouble is so that they will be available at the end of the game.

It feels like he gets way less fouls in the past few games

Maybe refs finally see him as defensive stop, not many foul calls when he blocks nor steals.

He is a better defender in most situations

that is half the game. He is also better than Biedrins on offense. Maybe in his best years Biedrins was an equal or even surpassed Noah in offense, but the defensive disparity is large, so large that he is a much, much, much more valuable player than Biedrins. Look at the Bull’s defense and tell me if it would be anywhere near what it is if they had Andris Biedrins.

by brutusbrutus on Jan 19, 2012 9:00 PM PST up reply actions

Not to diminish Noah’s accomplishments, but the Bulls play really good defense because they have multiple players who can defend. Ronnie Brewer and Luol Deng are excellent wing defenders and Asik/Gibson are also very good defensive bigs so it’s not just him. Put Biedrins on that team their defensive probably would be worse, but it’ll still be up there.

by DubsFan408 on Jan 19, 2012 9:58 PM PST up reply actions

Disagree

Noah is a much better post defender, Andris is a very good weakside defender, but in man/iso/generally any other defensive situation, he’s below average. Boozer is a poor all around defender (basically a ‘beefier’ david lee), I think the combo would be awful.

Andris on a team like Miami or Boston, where you have Haslem and Anthony and Bosh or K (all good post/iso defenders) would be monstrous cause he can play his game, effect shots from the weak-side, rebound etc.

But Chicago ask Noah (and Asik) to do a lot more, not so much.

Think it’s very superficial to claim Andris (in form) and Noah are that similar. It’s like a Westbrook/Rose or a Dlee/Bosh comparison. One really does a lot more despite similarities in numbers and game.

by tafkasam on Jan 20, 2012 7:28 AM PST up reply actions

I think Biedrins is underated as a post defender. Noah is better tho. And yeah, if Miami had Biedrins he’d start and would give them a much better chance to win a championship. Seriously. If we amnestied him they woulda got him and made us look like idiots.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 20, 2012 9:44 AM PST up reply actions

Don’t know. Biedrins gets bullied easily and fouls a lot in the post. But yeah their are much worse post-defenders.

Ideally, a Biedrins/UDoh front court defensively would be great. Udoh’s a good man defender, Biedrins is very good with his weakside help and contesting and blocking.

However with biedrins continued timidness on offense, and Udoh’s lack of development offensively, we simply can’t use the combo much.

If Udoh starts showing the midrange game he had at Baylor and becomes semi-competent on offense, and Biedrins starts cutting and finishing more like he did in 07-09, then we can, and we’d have a nice front court rotation with Lee. However I don’t have faith in either happening

by tafkasam on Jan 20, 2012 9:58 AM PST up reply actions

Udoh hits that midrange all day in practice. In the games he rarely hits it.

Agree, Noah is definitely better on ball, but I think Biedrins actually isn’t a bad on ball defender at all. He’s definitely above average as a defender away from the hoop for a C, too.

by Missing Barry on Jan 20, 2012 1:14 PM PST up reply actions

but I think Biedrins actually isn’t a bad on ball defender at all

He’s ok if the guy he’s guarding isn’t that strong or is really clumsy.

He can get bullied

by tafkasam on Jan 20, 2012 1:18 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, he can get bullied. Most C’s have weaknesses. The ones that can’t get bullied tend to have problems with quickness.

by Missing Barry on Jan 20, 2012 1:29 PM PST up reply actions

but the defensive disparity is large, so large that he is a much, much, much more valuable player than Biedrins

Don’t agree with this. Noah is a solid defensive player. Think he’s overrated and not that great, though. I think both Gibson and Asik are likely better defenders. Think Kurt Thomas might have been, too.

by Missing Barry on Jan 20, 2012 1:13 PM PST up reply actions

Gibson

I was hoping Udoh could be like him, but now that even seems too much

We have a shot at Hibbert, Hawes or Oden this summer

Hibbert wants to test free agency and it’s uncertain if indiana will match a big offer.

Maybe Gasol gets traded too if memphis looks at finances.

you never know

I hope we play biedrins more. If he finds form, a team like indy might consider trading restricted Hibbert for him, if they think they can’t give him 12-15 mil and see biedrins 9 mil as reasonable replacement.

by tafkasam on Jan 19, 2012 10:01 AM PST up reply actions

also indy trading for a white guy on GSW seems to be a trend :)

by tafkasam on Jan 19, 2012 10:01 AM PST up reply actions

No way Indy dont match any offer Hibbert gets. Before the new CBA we woulda had a shot. But now that the owners are basically guaranteed a profit, they wont hesitate to match offer sheets. Thats why Sterling matched DJ’s offer. Under the previous CBA, DJ would be a Warrior right now because Sterling was too cheap to spend like that.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 19, 2012 10:23 AM PST up reply actions

hmmm

Disagreed. New CBA is harsher, to be honest. They got the room, but they might see his cost as too much. He’ll probably stay though, cause they have a good cap situation.

However, their are also murmuring, OKC might not keep Russell, because he wants max dollars and they can’t afford him on a max + durant + resigning harden/ibaka.

Under the previous CBA, DJ would be a Warrior right now because Sterling was too cheap to spend like that.

disagreed. Old CBA was friendlier on tax. New one is harsher

by tafkasam on Jan 19, 2012 10:26 AM PST up reply actions

Indy wont go over the tax. They came into the offseason waaaay under the cap. As far as the Clippers go, they are selling out staples every night and the ticket prices are only going up. They not worried about no tax right now. They got money to burn now.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 19, 2012 10:36 AM PST up reply actions

Agreed, Indy won't go into the tax

And you’re right. Next year they got 31 mil committed, with hill and Hibbert restricted and due pay raises.

They do need to fill out the roster though, and George will get a raise sooner than later, so you never know.

I’m not sure how they value Hibbert, I’d lean 90% he stays, but you can never say for certain.

by tafkasam on Jan 19, 2012 10:39 AM PST up reply actions

also on DJ

Clippers have no commitments really. CP3 is a max deal in 17-20 range. Blake’s making 6-7, but Mo is expiring, so basically his money will go to blake. Caron’s on a reasonable 7-8 mil deal. Foye and Gomez expire- 8 mil, Chauncey only 2 mil.

Next year their CP3, Blake, DJ combo will make about 44 mil, caps at 58. CLippers spend the cap figure, Sterlings never gone luxury.

No!

Brook sucks. He rebounds and defends like a girl.

And with Lee, we need someone atleast competent at those things next to him, otherwise whats the point?

Asik might be worth looking at. Awesome defender.. Unsure Chicago can match a decent offer for a backup. They’re up against the tax w/o him as is (Rose, Boozer, Noah, Deng are a combine 55 mil). Adding Brewer, Gibson, Butler, Korver, Hamilton’s guarenteed money, they are at 72.5 and that doesn’t count Asik.

Davis gets better every game

Since louisville game- 18.5 ppg, 10.2 rpg.5.2 BLOCKS per game, .701 FG%!! 33.5 mpg

For season- 30.1 mpg, 13.8 rpg, 10.4 rpg, , 4.7 bpg, .658 fg%!

His frame compares favorably to a freshman Bosh, with slightly more length.

Bosh ended his freshman year with 15.6 ppg, 9.0 rpg, .560fg%, 31 mpg. And Davis will surpass those before end of year.

To me Davis is a Bosh/KG hybrid. He’s got the D and the intensity, with Bosh’s offensive game.

KG was 1 of the most dominant high school players of alltime. You can count on 1 hand the amount of Bigs who came straight outta high school and was able to do what KG did instantly in the league. I’ll let yall stay on the Davis train. In a year or 2 you’ll get off, then again some of you are still on the AR bandwagon.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 19, 2012 12:40 PM PST up reply actions

I’ll point this out-

Davis lacks the strength and girth to hold his spot on the block against heavier back-to-the-basket big men (something that might be an issue in the short-term), but his wide shoulders and solid base lead us to believe he will be able to fill out his frame in time.

I haven o reason to believe his body won’t resemble Bosh’s or maybe LMA. I doubt he’s ever big, but he can become bigger.

The next thing you notice is the role he plays on his (admittedly mediocre) high school team—often operating as their primary ball-handler and distributor. Davis is clearly a very unique player, as he really does have the skill-set of a guard, with his excellent ball-handling skills and very nice shooting touch, both from the perimeter and inside the paint. He can create his own shot with ease, changing directions with the ball and making some impressive shots off the dribble, and looks like a very good passer, especially in drive and dish situations. He shows good instincts as both a shot-blocker and rebounder, and is not afraid to dive on the floor for a loose ball.

I think he’s an all-star talent, and most pro-scouts agree.

I’m not sold on the guys like Henson, Perry Jones etc. They could be like BW or AR or if you’re lucky… AMir Johnson, but Davis… pretty confident.

by tafkasam on Jan 19, 2012 12:55 PM PST up reply actions

Wouldn’t be surprised if he went to the top 5, but I think he’s going to be around the the 7 range.

The guy is a beast on defense and is going to be a very good rebounder for his position. Think of a Gerald Wallace type of player. He’s also very good at slashing to the rim and has excellent SF size (6’7 with a 6’11 wingspan and is about 230 lbs).

Mark my words, this draft will go down as the most overated draft of alltime.

Im not happy that im not Riely or Myers. They get paid way more than I needed and get to watch every game.

by ILoveWarriorsGirls on Jan 19, 2012 1:15 PM PST up reply actions

we haven't had a top 5 pick since......Jamison?

Not true. Dunleavy was 3rd overall (I wanted Nene or Amare) and JRich was top 5 (good drafting for once).

Rebuild

Team needs to jettison everyone they can except Curry and maybe Klay for draft picks. This team has talent but nearly everyone is a square peg in a round hole. In fact, Curry and Klay are fair trade fodder too, but I think they’re more valuable in trades for talent, not picks.

It’s clear this team, as currently constructed, has no path toward being championship caliber. I wish it were’t so, but it is.

As a long time, die-hard fan living in LA I’ve paid every year for League Pass – and this year, after the free preview, I opted not to get it because it’s going to be to painful to watch. They will play hard, win some games and end up 2 positions out of the playoffs as usual. Even if their players develop, they will not get toward championship caliber…

Sad – I blame the Cohan regime for letting this happen. The dismantling of the We Believe team is inexcusable. THAT they could have built on.

by joegiant on Jan 19, 2012 10:53 AM PST reply actions

Everybody on that we believe team is washed up besides J-Rich.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 19, 2012 11:09 AM PST up reply actions

Harrington's have a career year

But yeah.

Would have been nice to give it more time though. So many of those guys are motivation players. Baron and Jack particularly. When they want to play, they are very good. When they don’t, eeks

by tafkasam on Jan 19, 2012 11:31 AM PST up reply actions

Including Monta and AB. :,-(

Actually, JRich is kind of washed up too…

There will be no extra point!

Barnes, Air France (SSS), and TMNT are all playing better right now than JRich.

What is SSS?

Mark my words, BD will come back

and NY will go on a big run before playoffs and possibly into it. Baron re-igniting them. He might save D’antoni’s job cause the whole NO PG thing is killing them. Amare specifically…

Problem is is that Curry's ankle might make us want to jettison him for high value

No one on this team is a huge keeper. Monta is awesome but you are not handcuffed to him, Lee hurts just s much as he helps when he plays good, Biedrins isn’t even playing much, Curry has a bum ankle and isn’t even a pure PG to run an offense etc

I love Monta, and I love Steph.

But I’m ready to blow this team up. I had high hopes for this season, but we either have to go all or nothing. Make a big trade that will get us into the playoffs or make a trade that will get us into the lottery. Not mid-lottery, I mean high picks.

No more mediocrity.

by G-State on Jan 19, 2012 12:12 PM PST up reply actions

So you want to trade Steph to get into the lottery -

- where it’s quite possible you won’t get a player as good as Steph.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

by Ronaldinho on Jan 19, 2012 12:18 PM PST up reply actions

Curry is on his way to being a star. No way do you give him up for ANYBODY in this draft.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 19, 2012 12:30 PM PST up reply actions

Isn’t that Drummond guy supposed to be pretty good? I’ll trade small for big any day.

by Missing Barry on Jan 19, 2012 1:24 PM PST up reply actions

I'm skeptical on Drummond

Davis is producing in college. Volume is increasing while efficiency is increasing.

Drummond- 9.9 ppg, 7.6 rpg, .570 fg%, 27.7 mpg. I mean he’s got a lot of potential, but I’m not seeing the hype other than size + potential. Need to see how he progresses this season, but i watched part of last nights game for ex. 28 minutes, 4 points, 6 rebounds, didn’t really jump out at me. Also is 34.8 FT% is great.

Not sure what to make of Sullinger. Dominant in college, but his lack of leaping ability makes me think Al Jeff. Henson and Jones I go back and forth on. Thomas Robinson reminds me of Kris Humphries with a bit more upside.

For wings, I really like Barnes, Beal and Lamb. Beal, keeps impressing me. Reminds me a lot of Eric Gordon or Mitch Richmond.

Kidd-Gilchrist looks like a Gerald Wallace type player

And for mid-late first round, I’m extremely high on Kendall MArshall, who is one of best open court passes I’ve seen in a long time. Head always up, pushing tempo, type of player Nellie would LOVE. And Kabongo at Texas, also looks like a true PG who is a bit raw.

by tafkasam on Jan 19, 2012 1:48 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t get the huge attraction of Drummond really…..I think Davis is hands down the best player in this draft.

by DubsFan408 on Jan 19, 2012 3:12 PM PST up reply actions

Quote me where I said I wanted to trade Steph for a lottery pick, please. Otherwise don’t put words in my mouth. I would not trade Steph for a pick.

I said we either need to make a trade to get us into the playoffs or to the lottery. A trade to land someone very valuable would involve trading Steph. I would trade Monta for a good lottery pick.

So you are responding to something I never said? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

by G-State on Jan 19, 2012 12:30 PM PST up reply actions

Problem is is that Curry’s ankle might make us want to jettison him for high value

Yes. By all means! Let’s freak out over what may be nothing worse than an unlucky injury and trade a highly valuable player!

by Ronaldinho on Jan 19, 2012 12:18 PM PST up reply actions

He's hurt the same ankle in college

And chronically the last 2 years even after surgery and a study shows it comes from how he actually moves, not luck

This is a different injury from his last year injury.

And the only “study” I’ve seen suggested that he may have re-injured his ankle because his kinesethetics weren’t back to where they should have been after the earlier injury.

by Ronaldinho on Jan 19, 2012 2:11 PM PST up reply actions

I can't take 1 more game of this Ron

Lets trade him for Jason Kidd. He’s a pure PG, and he can guard 2s!

How many career have been ruined by chronic ankle sprains?

by J-RIDAH on Jan 19, 2012 12:30 PM PST reply actions

Its never happened in the history of sports. Its not like he broke the ankle. He’ll be wearing a plastic brace for the rest of the season and maybe his career. I dont think he’ll get another sprain this season.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 19, 2012 12:35 PM PST up reply actions

Its never happened in the history of sports.

Now how on earth can you claim this as a fact? Do you have a team of researchers that have investigated the end of every athlete to ever play professional sports?

I’m not saying it does end careers, but you can’t get away with saying something like that and thinking you are right. You are making that up and passing it off as a fact. There is simply no way you can know that.

by G-State on Jan 19, 2012 12:48 PM PST up reply actions

by Sleepy Freud on Jan 19, 2012 12:59 PM PST up reply actions

Well if I never heard of something ever happening in sports I tend to think it never happened until proven otherwise. Im more than willing to capitulate my statement if you can show me a case in any sport where a career was ended due to a ankle sprain.

by J-RIDAH on Jan 19, 2012 1:07 PM PST up reply actions

by that logic

if i say

“when is the last time someone’s career ended because their legs were sawed in half and their head was cut off?”

that means that getting your legs sawed in half and having your head cut off does not end careers until you can show me a case in any sport where that happened.

I think in general, people with genetically weak ankles rarely get good enough to play pro sports. They give it up long before then.

everyone wants to blowup the team

the difference between this year and last year is that, last year sounds reasonable to blowup the team with any player who has stats above average. This year, we want to blowup but we don’t know who to get in return. Sounds like this year’s team is better than last year’s team.

Not to mention we have a better coach! (well, anyone is better than Smart…)

by ILoveWarriorsGirls on Jan 19, 2012 1:24 PM PST reply actions

That actually is the most encouraging thing about this season. Mark Jackson appears to really be able to coach. 3 or 4 four years from now it is entirely possible that our entire roster could be different, but here’s hoping that Jackson does well enough to have kept his job.

Sittin in my scraper watchin Oakland goin wild, ta-dow!

HEY GOV...

yes, i think beans is doing great and the best part is even the league should notice his value and perhaps we should look to keep him ourselves or pursue tradiing him for something like a pick or two… i hope we keep him efficient cuz some team that is in contention may be willing to part with a nice pick (late first round?) for beans… the end result could be bettter than if we ever amnestied him..

on a side note ~ if ppl label Ron Paul as racist they may be interested to see this…
