Wow, I learned a lot from this one video

Now, can I see all that in real time during a game? Hah, not yet.

Neither can I

I love this guy’s breakdowns

If you're watching a blowout, you can pass the time by counting the double teapots.

yeah, this is solid

rec’d

“Rush takes a horrible angle for the screen, and Curry doesn’t set his man up for it”

classic…I guess this explains why I think we never run pick-n-roll (we do, and just screw it up so bad you can’t tell we were even trying.

and DON’T JUMP IN THE AIR TO PASS!!

I don’t think a jump pass is always a bad thing. Depends on the situation. You have to have somewhere to go with the ball, and the reason to jump is just to create a passing lane you don’t have.

by Missing Barry on Jan 24, 2012 8:51 PM PST up reply actions

ok...let's call it a bad thing MOST of the time
you have to have somewhere to go with the ball

but seriously, how often do you see this happen?

AND, even if it does open a previously closed passing window, you should still try to avoid this situation (since it telegraphs your pass a lot more, giving the defense more time to get in position to intercept)

Jumping to pass is a fundamental no-no. How often do we see it happen with bad results? Too often.

Monta might learn fundamental basketball when his body says “no” to certain superhuman abilities.

by Doctor Kajita on Jan 25, 2012 10:12 AM PST up reply actions

I’m still pro jump pass! Like I said, you have to use it right, though. Clearly the Warriors very frequently don’t do it right. Monta gets caught up in the air frequently, Rush got caught in the air driving on Gasol….not good.

by Missing Barry on Jan 25, 2012 10:35 AM PST up reply actions

I’m not sure if jump passing is an action to use right or to use sparingly. I believe the latter. It’s Murphy’s Law.

by Doctor Kajita on Jan 25, 2012 10:58 AM PST up reply actions

Like any sort of fundamental in any sport, it’s not a hard law (QBs can in fact throw off their back foot, jump passes can work) – more of a solid piece of advice to help you avoid trouble

The absolute worst case is jumping with the ball and nobody is even around let alone open.

Having a wide open man is the other end of the spectrum and in this case it is not a liability in any way more than a normal pass would have been.. then there is the all the gray situations in between ( :

by PIRATEWARRIOR on Jan 25, 2012 2:02 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, sometimes you need to create that vertical space for a passing lane, especially when most of the other players are taller than you. You only do it when it’s necessary and the pass is open, though.

by Missing Barry on Jan 25, 2012 2:42 PM PST up reply actions

not true "and the issue of telegraphing is not a problem."

it allows defender to anticipate and get ready to get into the passing lane.

I can’t find the spot in the video, but I think it was a pass to Monta that was intercepted because when you’re guy goes up, if you can tell he’s not going to pass, it allows astute defenders to get set to jump in front of the pass. Just like an interception in the NFL, guys are smart enough to bait a guy into thinking someone is open, while actually lurking for the steal

I guess I’m ok with it if there is really no one between you and the guy you’re passing to, but my HS coach would tear into us for jump passes (and picking up your dribble early)

If you look at the Synergy stats

Ellis and Curry turn over the ball in the pick and roll 20% of the time I think

If you're watching a blowout, you can pass the time by counting the double teapots.

Great video....

…. It’s weird how quickly we devolve into this kind of offense. We’ve had a bunch of amazing quarters this season and they’ve all been when the offense is operating as a unit. The high screen and roll and iso sets should be peppered in throughout the game, sure, but every time that become our offense we look completely lost and ineffective.

by warriorsablaze on Jan 24, 2012 4:34 PM PST reply actions

So...

Is the pick-and-roll a bad call for this team then? In this game recap at least, every time they run it, the play turns into crap.

by jebinitay on Jan 24, 2012 4:59 PM PST reply actions

Well, they don’t execute it properly. I don’t see how that’s all on the coaching, the players bear some responsibility for that, too.

by Missing Barry on Jan 24, 2012 8:52 PM PST up reply actions

this

P-n-R aint exactly rocket science (from a coaching standpoint) you can see from the linked video, our guys are generally in the right space, it seems to me like they have a problem consistently making the right decisions to set up and execute a good P-n-R.

Granted, this is something the coaches should work on, but if IIRC, Smart made a point of working on the P-n-R early too, and then pretty much abandoned it….

dang, I wish this was how highlight reels were made

I’d watch this 24 hours a day if it was on ESPN

J-RIDAH: Its not 1 player in this draft better than Monta or Lee. Anthony Davis is no different than Al Farouq Aminu. Andre Drummond could be good but he is not impressive at this point at all besides his size. This draft is hella overated.

(JaVale) Mcgee is better than anybody in this draft.

yup
Jackson is part of the problem…he kept calling, or somebody kept calling, screen and roll.. against a really good defensive team it aint gonna cut it.. you need to have something more clever to get one more good shot, you just needed one good shot

Heard alot of bad shots and awful passes for curry.. Monta also had a few but this video almost broke down all the flaws of curry and what he needs to fix. Aside from his obvious 1 handed/lazy passes, I really don’t like taking so many long 2s when he can easily take 1 step back for a 3 even if he hits it sometimes. Mark Jackson also needs to run something more effective if pick-and-rolls are failing. But I doubt he has much in his playbook being a 1st year coach.

Awesome comments!

Thanks for getting in on the conversation here, everybody. Don’t miss another great breakdown coming up!

Wow

And to think I was tearing my hair out and calling for Smart’s head over the lack of Curry/Lee PnR’s last season. Excellent breakdown, I learned a ton from this. REC all caps

Nice video, I love being able to watch basketball that way – quickly go through relevant plays. That video highlights just how poor our players fundamentals can be sometimes. On the PnR, the screener rarely holds his ground and looks to slip way too quickly, our ball handlers never rub their guy off on the screeners shoulders, they consistently take bad angles and don’t set the screen up….ugh. And yeah, Monta should only run the PnR going right.

by Missing Barry on Jan 24, 2012 8:55 PM PST reply actions

This is something that has been driving me crazy this season (and last, too)...

… Fundamentals.

— Our players rarely box out their man. Do you think 6’5" Barkley got all those rebounds without putting a body on his guy?

— Screener rolling too soon… and the ball handler not getting close enough to the screen to run his man into it… a defender should almost never be able to go above the screen if done right.

— Players don’t come to the ball to receive passes. Curry’s lazy passes on the perimeter drive me crazy, but some of those turnovers could be avoided if the receiver was not equally lazy and took a step towards the pass.

This is stuff you learn at age 10.

by warriorsablaze on Jan 24, 2012 9:36 PM PST up reply actions

ya, it would be sweeet to be able to watch a commercial free condensed and analysed half our version of each game.. (the future)

but i like ur point of how “our ball handlers never rub their guy off on the screeners shoulders, they consistently take bad angles”. That seems to be a coachable thing. They should work on that ( :

by PIRATEWARRIOR on Jan 25, 2012 2:14 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah that was something I noticed during the game – especially noticed the ones at 8:15 in this video and 8:35 in this video. Just awful execution. Definitely a coachable thing, but those guys should know better than that, too.

by Missing Barry on Jan 25, 2012 3:24 PM PST up reply actions

Someone should send this to Mark Jackson in hopes that he’ll fix some of these mistakes, but maybe he already knows most of this and the players just doesn’t get it.

by Raiiny on Jan 24, 2012 9:11 PM PST reply actions

He’s definitely watching film of every play of the game. Let’s give the coaching staff some credit at least, I have little doubt they’re at least putting the effort in. If they weren’t, that’s the kind of thing an insider like the owner would be able to see pretty plainly.

by Missing Barry on Jan 24, 2012 10:04 PM PST up reply actions

like reffin a game it’s a lot easier to do in hindsight in slow mo. If this guy is so good he should be out there setting screens himself instead of youtubing someone else’s efforts

I definitely blow into my hands when I shoot air balls. LOL!

I like this type of video very much. I’d like to see some of other teams to see how the Warriors stack up.

I think there’s a lot of improvisation in basketball so just because you fail to set a good screen, there will always be options from that. I do agree that they ran that high pick way too often with zero results and yes, it is quite an indictment on Mark Jackson for not calling a TO in crunch time to get re-organized.

Can we see a video like this from last season?

Because the same personnel (for the most part) was very effective running the PnR.

thanks for sharing a great vid.

I’d love to see more videos like this. So much better than the stupid crap mass media normally puts out to grab headlines. Much more fun to watch than a simple highlight reel of dunks and fancy plays.
