Henry Abbott speaks with David Thorpe about the "Royal Jelly" theory and how to improve a player on the NBA level.

Interesting podcast.

Sidenote: Reggie Williams worked with Thorpe before he came to Warriors

"Sam Presti asked who are top 3 likely busts in 2008 draft. I said, 1. Anthony Randolph, 2. Maurice Speights ...."

I found that pretty interesting!

Furthermore, I think Mark Jackson has an understanding of this theory and uses it somewhat.

IMO, he’s clear with what he wants from his role players. The consistency of the role players actions on the court make this clear to me.

Then, there’s Curry, Ellis, and Lee who he trusts to play more flexible and figure out some of the things they need to do to help the team. Their jobs aren’t quite as mechanical as the rest of the team and they are responsible for analyzing the game and running an offense through. Unfortunately, Ellis and Lee should be role players on a successful team.

Sure Ellis can put up a lot of points in a game, but most of us realize the way he’s been getting those points in the past 3 years has been terribly inefficient. He needs to primarily be a drive and kick/dump/finish player and knock down the mid-range jumper when wide open. Unfortunately, it might be too late for him to assume this role with all the junk he’s been fed by his past coaches. Same goes for Lee. His role should primarily be to knock down the midrange jumper, run pick and roll/pop, finish around the basket off the pass, and rebound.
