Time to Trade Stephen Curry

I'm sorry to say this but I think the Warriors should try to move on without Stephen Curry. I love the kid and was totally against the Chris Paul deal, but never did I anticipate his ankle being such a huge issue. He got surgery and plenty of rest over the (extended) off-season, and he's already had 3 incidents with the ankle. What makes anyone think that he is going to get better if he keeps trying to play on it throughout the season? Nothing.

He is still an appealing trading piece, and I feel he is overvalued around the league more than undervalued so it would be wise for the Warriors to try to make a deal with him. Oh yeah, and let's add Bob Fitzgerald in the deal because I cannot stand him as our play-by-play guy (only kidding about the trade, but he is the absolute worst).

Ideally, a healthy Curry is something I would want to keep going forward because he is so damn talented. However, the nature in which he's sprained (re-injured) his ankle makes me believe that there may be a bigger issue. Looking at the three sprains, two of them didn't appear to be that severe; more so tweaks than a full on rolled ankle. They were odd to say the least. I feel for the guy, but there may be something going on from the surgery that just wasn't right.

If we can get anyone at around 75% of his value, I'd take it. Preferably someone young like John Wall, Kyrie Irving, Jrue Holiday, or dare I say Russell Westbrook? Either that, or a decent big man is probably what we need more.

What are your guys' thoughts on trading Curry at this point?

Steph Curry has to stop wearing Nike Shoes PERIOD.

Switch to Reebok or Adidas, might not look as good as Nike’s, but darn it, they’re comfy.

we’re cheap, like to drink and are pissed off.

Why do we have to give up Steph? I propose this four-way trade:

Celtics get: Pau Gasol, Metta World Peace, Big Baby
Lakers get: Jermaine O’Neal, Hedo Turkoglu, Jameer Nelson
Magic get: Luke Walton, Derek Fisher, Keyon Dooling
Warriors get: Howard, Bynum, Rondo

IWITTM!!

Time to Trade Stephen Curry

No. we want to buy low and sell high not the reverse. The chances of modern medicine fixing Binky are better than the chances of us getting someone equal to him in his present condition.

Everybody is talking about the injury like it's definitely going to be chronic.

However, I think people are jumping the gun about that.

What we have right now are two injuries to the same ankle – one last season and one this season.

That may be a dangerous sign of things to come. Or it may just be a random fluke. People should not jump to conclusions about it.

by Ronaldinho on Jan 5, 2012 8:04 AM PST reply actions

Or maybe Curry's just too slow to play in NBA

Almost all his injuries came from quick lateral movement. Takes the expression ‘breaking ankles’ to a new level

by tafkasam on Jan 5, 2012 8:26 AM PST up reply actions

Right: all that would fall under “dangerous sign of things to come.”

As it is, it’s too early to say anything definitively. For all the tweaks and hearts-in-throats, Curry has so far played in 159 out of 170 possible NBA games, for the most part at a very high level.

There will be no extra point!

Almost all his injuries came from quick lateral movement.

Last night, the ankle gave out when he was moving forward, not laterally. It was clear if you watched it. It was not from a quick lateral movement. It was actually rather similar to the strange forward step that caused it to give way in the preseason against SAC.

Against Chicago, he aggravated the ankle when he stepped on Korver’s foot. It was not from a quick, lateral movement.

While I agree with an assessment that his ankle is a serious cause for concern, your ‘diagnosis’ that it’s from lateral movement problems caused by being too slow is at odds with what actually happened.

nooooooo
It was actually rather similar to the strange forward step that caused it to give way in the preseason against SAC.

IIRC, the initial roll against Sac in the preseason occurred as Steph tried to hop around a screen, laterally

I'm really worried

Seeing as how he rolled them on his own, not stepping on anyone’s foot, this really worries me. What I also wonder is why this didn’t happen in college or high school. There’s something funny going on. Either really bad luck or a degenerative problem that they haven’t addressed. I doubt any shoe could prevent him from rolling his ankle on his own like this. I wonder if he has some sort of weight distribution problem or really narrow feet or something else that will be a constant problem.

I wonder if he needs to be off of it for a month or so and really strenghten it before he goes back out there?

To address the original post….I’m all for trading Curry. I would take any of the players listed above. The problem is, I don’t think the other teams would trade them for Curry straight up.

This is typical Warrior biased evaluation. I think our front office overvalues it’s own players to a fault. If the Celts seriously offered Rondo for Curry this summer, I have a hard time imagining them turning it down. Doesn’t make sense. Rondo is one of the best PG’s in the league.

Anyways, I feel for the kid and I think he needs to take at least two weeks off to rest. Maybe even a month to work on stabilizing and strengthening.

The ankle problems started

His junior year against Furman. That’s why he declared for the draft when he did.

I hope this goes away. Something tells me there’s something else wrong besides the ligaments…

yeah, they really need to go in and clean out the ankle I think

I mean, all that glass floating around in there has got to be causing problems

How many times?

Did he sprain it at Davidson? I don’t remember it ever being anything like this. And I doubt he declared for the draft because he sprained his ankle. Like he knew it was going to be a chronic problem and might as well get drafted now as opposed to 1 year later when his career is over? C’mon.

by Lacob2013 on Jan 5, 2012 10:39 AM PST up reply actions

he only sprained it once in college

and he was fine during his first year in the pros. i wouldn’t say his problems started in college

Could just be that his ankle never fully healed, and it’s really just the same injury, over and over.

maybe curry just needs some chronic

You guys do realize that other GMs have access to the internet, too, right?

Nobody is going to pick up Curry right now for any kind of value. The ankle has gone twice on a simple plant.

He has been playing very well. But he needs to do whatever it takes to get that ankle right, even if it means taking a year off.

Man - this kool-aid is really good! What did you put in it?

by FloorBurn on Jan 5, 2012 8:47 AM PST reply actions

Really?

Are you implying NBA GM’s scouring GSOM seeing how FloorBurn and Ronaldinho are assessing Curry’s ankle and valuing his worth?

by Lacob2013 on Jan 5, 2012 9:23 AM PST up reply actions

My better solution – sit Curry down until his ankle heals. If that doesn’t happen until next season, so much the better. Yes, 5 games into the season, I am officially advocating tanking. ;)

by Missing Barry on Jan 5, 2012 10:26 AM PST reply actions

Tanking...

In a year we don’t have a 1st rd pick? Why?

by Lacob2013 on Jan 5, 2012 10:34 AM PST up reply actions

ahh

My mistake.
Wow, tank 6 games in. If there every is a year, this is the year. Too bad we don’t have our amnesty. Would have provided a lot of flexibility this offseason.
Maybe we could trade Monta for one of the Nets’ 1st rounders.

by Lacob2013 on Jan 5, 2012 11:23 AM PST up reply actions

Sit Curry

and try to move Ellis for mild cap relief, some solid depth that complements Curry, and hopefully a 2012 1st round pick.

by eastbayglory on Jan 9, 2012 12:32 PM PST up reply actions

keep Curry...

rest him…don’t understand why everyone is so ready to trade a 23 year old…and no Rajon Rondo is not better than Steph Curry, Pleaasse…….There is a reason why the Hornets said NO to a Rajon Rondo package for Chris Paul and were creaming themselves for Steph Curry.

by JimBarnett2KevinGarnett on Jan 5, 2012 11:10 AM PST reply actions   1 recs

Do we even know how much the Hornets wanted Curry in this Chris Paul trade? Now, granted, I haven’t been followings things that closely lately, so maybe I’m just not up on things, but my impression was basically that both the Clips and Warriors inquired about Paul, and the Hornets basically said “no chance without Curry/Gordon in the deal”, which both franchises said no to initially. Now, obviously the Clips eventually came back with a strong package, but we never did. Did negotiations ever get beyond that point? Do we really know the Hornets were excited about trading for Curry? Gordon was the centerpiece of their package, but they also got a high pick in it and Aminu, so it’s not like Gordon alone was enough. I can easily picture a parallel scenario with Curry….

by Missing Barry on Jan 5, 2012 10:58 PM PST up reply actions

the hornets wanted steph more than any of the other potentials

the problem was that the front office wouldn’t trade him without getting paul to extend, and decided that if paul wouldn’t extend, they would only offer monta instead of curry, to which new orleans promptly said no.

by bigkino217 on Jan 6, 2012 8:10 AM PST up reply actions

Would we have been able to get it done by just trading Curry + contract filler?

by Missing Barry on Jan 6, 2012 10:56 AM PST up reply actions

Don't you think other teams are aware of his ankle just as much?

you can’t really hide the fact that he has a bum ankle… the shoes are the obvious problem… nike’s solution was to put him in an even lower shoe? get him some high tops that tie to his shin. that’l stop that ankle from rolling anywhere it shouldn’t :D

keep em both.

by dandubz on Jan 5, 2012 11:27 AM PST reply actions

Be a real bummer...

If Steph was out for the remainder, leading to an Ellis showcase reel season of 40pt games and spin moves, resulting in a bottom-five win record. I can see no value at all in that.

I disagree with trading Curry

especially now with the hurt ankle. I’d rather focus attention on moving Ellis. What the first batch of games has shown most is that Ellis doesn’t fit well within Coach Jackson’s slowed-down, more fundamental style. Regardless of the health of Curry’s ankle, Ellis is the one that doesn’t fit.
