Warriors pursue Dwight Howard 1/5/12
Adrian Wojnarowski on Yahoo Sports posted an article about the Warriors being very aggressive in getting Howard from the Magic. Here is the link:
Maybe after last nights reoccurring injury to Curry had them realize that the time is now to trade him and bring in a Super Star. I like Curry and do not want to see either Ellis or him go but at 2-4 and the promise of reaching the playoffs, maybe reality set in.
But lets all be honest, some players are not reaching the expectations that we all had. Dorell and Klay have not provided offense and I hardly see Biedrins on the court.
Keep in mind that this will be a one season rental for Howard which GSW hopes to convince to stay long term. But then again, I find myself expecting Curry to get injuried when I watch the games which is not cool. Maybe it really is time to at least be open minded to a trade.
WOULD YOU DO THIS TRADE? WHAT PACKAGE WOULD YOU SEND THE MAGIC'S FOR HOWARD?
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Klay
Tyler
Udoh
maybe a future pick
Warriors would get:
Howard
Turkolu
I know its a lot to lose but Howard is a star and rare plus young
Yes, I agree
It hurt me deeply when we traded Gordon for CP3, but I realized that we are so better off with CP3 rather than Gordon. Trading Curry will probably break the dubs fans hearts, but realize this, you’re getting a superstar in return.
we’re cheap, like to drink and are pissed off.

I have to think that our fan base differentiates us from NJ. Also, as far as legitimacy in the NBA, Jerry West >>> Jay-Z
Jay Z is more appealing then Jerry West

How? We already used our amnesty on Bell, and even if we did still have it, I’m not sure you can amnesty a player you obtained in a trade.
Even if we had it we couldn't amnesty any player acquired past a certain date.
Which already past so there is no way we could’ve theoretically amnestied Turkey-Glue.

I know its a lot to lose
That’s not that much to lose. Curry plus a bunch of stuff? If we can get an extension, it’s an absolute no-brainer. Even without no promise of an extension, I’d consider it. Obviously Curry is a valuable player, so it would depend on how likely we think an extension is.
Basically, our whole team for Dwight Howard with a contract extension is an absolute steal for us.
There will be no extra point!
Woj is saying that the Dubs are willing to go all in without an extension in place
Golden State management is willing to take Howard as a one-season "rental," with the hope of selling him on signing a long-term deal before he enters free agency this summer.
this has me crapping my pants.
no question that it takes us some future 1st round pikc, PLUS Curry, plus whatever the hell else the Magic want, AND we almost certainly are bringing Hedo along too
I’m not excited.
But this to me is no big news…yeah, we called and said we want Dwight, you can have anything…

Well...
The team eventually has to be blown up or big moves have to be made because I honestly don’t see this roster as champion caliber. I don’t even see playoffs in the near future, but it’s not everyday you get a chance for a superstar to potentially attract other free agents. But when you break it down I’m not exactly a 100% sure I’d support it just yet. I guess I’m more interested in who we trade and how our cap room looks if Dwight joins then leaves the following season.
I would offer
the whole team plus lacob, goober, jackson and everyone else emplyed by the warriors except barnett and jamie sire.

Doesn’t look that bad to me, honestly. Looks like he knows what he is doing on the court, and expects his shot to go in though it isn’t. I think it is clear he could have used some Summer League, preseason, and working with Warriors trainers, but that can’t be put on him with the lockout.
Tossing him in for Howard with an extension though is a no brainer. Tossing him in for Dwight without an extension…it’s not that I think he’s untouchable but we need SOMETHING to convince Howard to stay, otherwise we are left without Curry/Thompson/Udoh/whoever else we trade, as well as our first round pick this year and next year. At least with Thompson you can play the “potential” card to Howard.
Scurred
am I the only one who thinks Klay Thompson looks absolutely scared out there? His body language/posture looks downright uncomfortable. If that is natural then boy does he look awkward on the court as an NBA player…
I would give Orlando pretty much anything they wanted
They can have my sisters, my car, my pants, your pants, your mom…ANYTHING.
GET IT DONE.
If we’re going to lose D. Ho after one year, so be it. We’re going to have to pretty much rebuild then anyway – at least we’d be respectable for a year. We’re facing a pretty tough season anyway. Might as well take a shot. What have we got to lose?

We’re going to have to pretty much rebuild then anyway – at least we’d be respectable for a year.
only problem though is that we just blew our whole wad on a rental of Howard. Just look at how much money we’d have tied up in Hedo and Lee for the next few years…plus no Steph, very little exciting young talent, and probably lost a 1st round pick as well….that’s no rebuild, that’s a train wreck

I’m not a GM, but personally I see no way to keep Dwight Howard after this season. So I say "no’ to giving up some great pieces of our future for a couple of months with Dwight Howard.
But the effort alone to get him signals that Golden State is at least trying to enter the boss player realm. I love the attack, FO. Stay on the hunt.

Was there a rule that you couldn't re-sign an amnestied player?
Curious.
We could have amnestied Lee then re-sign him at what the market really could bear for him, which is probably less the the $80M we signed him for.
Of course you would have run the risk of your amenstied player getting signed somewhere else, but at least you would have been able to make an impact to your cap.

amnesty clause does not mean the warriors do not pay his original contract, it just means it does not count against the salary cap. So why amnesty a player just to pay him even more money? Does not make sense.

I don't
Look at the way Biedrins has played so far this season? Not able to stay out there for prolonged periods, but pretty damn good while he’s been out there. A 7 footer who still has a little potential, and can be effective for 20-25 minutes? That’s probably an $8M player. So, to get what we had in Andris if we amnestied him, we’d have to spend $6-8M, probably more than that since FA’s don’t come here unless they’re overpaid. Amnesty would have saved us little money or come at the cost of having any depth at center.
Same can be said for Lee, who besides Monta, has at least been able to keep the offense going. I think his energy and hustle would be extremely effective next to a big that commands respect. Are there scoring power forwards who can rebound that can be signed for under $10M? Doubt it, so the savings from the amnesty come out to less than $4M – which is what we saved by amnestying Bell.

What about
We trade everything we can for Howard except Monta. After a few months of having Howard and if there are signs he wont stay long term then I would trade Howard for Bynum or some other star at the trade deadline.
I think
there is a rule in the CBA that won’t allow trading a newly acquired player for a certain amount of time…
for this reason I am sure we cannot trade most of our rookies (not sure) but for sure we cannot trade Ish Smith, Nate Robinson, Brandon Rush, Dom Mcguire
Sigh
This is the exact situation I did NOT want happening. And of course we already used our amnesty. OF COURSE WE USED OUR AMNESTY ON AN EXPIRING CONTRACT. This front office is a joke. The trade package will have to be more than Curry, Udoh and a bunch of scrubs, by the way, because once again, CURRY INJURED HIS ANKLE AND LOWERED HIS TRADE VALUE.
If you're watching a blowout, you can pass the time by counting the double teapots.
Samurai Champloo > Macross
Ankle injuries
arnt that big of a deal. Totally different than knees…
Curry still has insane trade value, however the amnesty was wasted big time and there isn’t any way to prove it was not…
The problem is that he has injured the ankle several times
He basically has the “injury-prone” label on him now, fair or not.
If you're watching a blowout, you can pass the time by counting the double teapots.
Samurai Champloo > Macross
Ankle injuries aren't a big deal...
When you don’t hurt it 3 teams in only 6 games in. Also the fact he can roll his ankle just by playing defense (backing up) is a somewhat a cause of concern, personally.
What do you want from the FO?
How many times will you bitch and moan about this? What should they have done differently? What free agents were out there? What great players were available for trade? Should Curry just be permanently benched to save his ankles? Does that help our team on the court or the trade value?
Yes, we have had some terrible.. a lot of terrible front office decisions in the past 15 years, but the last year has been a lot of moves that almost seem to make sense and help position us for the future.

the hidden factor in all of this
is the Dubs’ potential move to China Basin in 5 years, and how that motivates the direction FO takes in the future. Also, DH12 listed Monta as a player he would love to play with, right?Even if Howard leaves after the season, it’s money off the books. I for one do not see a contender in this current team. We need to overhaul this mug and draft better, or stay on the “treadmill of mediocrity”.
IF we do this we won’t be in the draft for a few years.

if its costs Curry tho to get Dwight for one season, I say do it. you are giving up on Klay far too soon here. I mean, he’s had six games in the NBA, and you’re already saying he’s never met expectations?
expectations are he’ll never be good as DHo so he has met them so far.

Wouldn't this be something if it happened.
The two players (Paul and Howard) that the Lakers were going after end up with historically awful division foes.

Might be the dumbest thing I'll say all year.
But how about a 3 way trade?
Chicago gets Monta Ellis, Beans.
Orlando gets Stephen Curry, Udoh and Asik
Warriors get Dwight Howard, Luol Deng, Jameer Nelson.
Jameer Nelson/Jenkins
Klay/Rush
Deng/DWright/McGuire
Lee/Udoh
Howard/Brown
We save ourselves from giving up any 1st rounders and getting Hedo and just pray that Howard resigns with us.
haha
yea…thought so.
Oh well, I’ll just go with the crowd and go with
Curry/Klay/Beans/Future Pick for Howard/Hedo
We don’t have a pick to trade until 2016. I think it’ll be somewhere in the lines of Curry/Klay/Beans/Brown/Wright for Howard/Hedo.
nah
we could work it out somehow…my initial thought is that we would just do “a player to be named later” and then they get whatever pick they want whenever we happen to have our next shot (so 2013)

More like
Ellis and Beans for Deng and Asik
And then Asik, Curry and Udoh for Howard and Nelson.
Long shot for Bulls and Magic to agree on this though…I just threw it out there because it sounded crazy and fun.
The worst part of this trade rumor
is that it gives the GSW haters are reason to mock the very idea of Dwight Howard going to the Warriors.
Some of the stuff I’ve been reading…. pretty damned disparaging. People simply have the WORST image of the Bay Area and GSW. And on top of that, even most Bay Area people have the WORST image of Oakland.
My God, how did things get this bad and who exactly fucked it up. The Bay is a world-class destination. How many international tourists vacation in in Indiana or Milwuakee? Charlotte? The Bay Area is right up there with Miami, Chicago, NYC and LA.

What have you been reading?
You could convince someone were not an Oakland team if you felt like it needed to be explained. Or you could just say were moving to SF , part of NJ’s allure is that they are moving to Brooklyn
RIP Al Davis
Unfortunately, that's a misguided assessment from my POV.
I live in the Bay. Honestly, what does this place have to offer? Yellow and brown mountains? Yippee…
Dude really?

Hedo actually doesn’t look too bad 7 games into the season. 16.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, 5.7 assists per 36 on .610 TS%. Granted, he’s on the wrong side of 30 and his ugly contract escalates as he ages, but production-wise he’s solid so far.
he's kinda like Lee in that way
My biggest knock on Hedo isn’t that he’s an inherently bad player (he’s at least decent) but that contract is nasty

we trading a good pg for a very good pg with extra players.
I don’t think Dwight will give us any great impact without a true pg running the court. And his value is too high as its already.
Give them everyone but Ellis!
Steph + Klay + Udoh for Howard and Clark!
keep klay give udoh

Two trade scenarios
Biedrins/Wright/Curry/Udoh/Klay OR Monta/Biedrins/Wright/Udoh/Pick
FOR
Howard/Turkoglu/JRich
Possible Third
Monta/Lee/Biedrins/Pick
For
Howard/Turkoglu/Davis/JRich
Wait, that’s ugly. Ehhh. What’s sad is that Orlando might find that most attractive.
offer
Biedrins/Thompson/Udoh/D.Wright/Jenkins/Tyler or anyone else
for DH12
Big3 Howard/Curry/Ellis
Only trade that Orlando would even consider is
Curry/D. Wright/Udoh/ and Beans plus fillers for Howard and Turkoglu.
Problem with that is we’ll have Monta, Lee, Turkoglu and Dwight Howard at about 45-55 Million a year
if we do this
I would like to give up klaynk and dorell. And make them take D Lee’s big-ass contract if we have to take Turkey-Glues. And I would love to get rid of beans, too. If we could keep Monta and play him at the point with rush at the 2, I would be happy. I think Monta is an allstar this year, I really like the way he has been playing and passing like a PG. And Currys ankle is a bitch and I fuckin hate his late 4th Q lazy, 1 hand passes that lead to turnovers. Plus we need Monta’s clutch. DO IT??!!!!!!!!! I think we could convince D12 to stay if we play good enough!
okay 7 ankle sprains that have made him miss a total of 9 games
and everyone thinks it’s the second coming of greg oden… people need to relax.
You're right
Dwight might actually like it if he came…but he probably won’t come, IMO. Think about it.
1. When have the Warriors been able to lure that kind of free agent? Literally never. If I were in the NBA, I’d want to play here simply for the fans. But for reasons you can come up with on your own, superstar NBA free agents haven’t been coming here, despite the crazy fans. I guess there’s a first time for everything, buuuuut I honestly don’t think this is the year that changes for the Warriors. Hate to sound pessimistic – I’m just being honest.
2. The Warriors are not exactly built for a Championship right now. If the Warriors did manage a trade for Dwight at what would likely be a considerable cost, Dwight is unlikely to want to sign an extension…UNLESS the FO can convince one or more other key pieces to come aboard before he bolts. The likelihood of signing a SECOND top tier free agent is even slimmer than signing the first. (See number one above). I have no reason to believe Dwight would want to stay in GSW.
3. If Curry is part of our proposal, his ankle condition will likely be a factor in Orlando’s final decision. Sad, but true. (I hope Curry gets it taken care of.) Who the hell knows what’s going on with his ankle right now? Maybe the team doctors do, but it seems like nobody really knows. Not even Nike.

Well he'd have to come and no luring is involved if he's traded, it's just the resigning him part that is tricky
What if we dealt Lee and Andris in a multi team trade? Maybe we could clear some DWill cap…

OK True
I had my reasons just slightly out of order. I hope I made my point though.

He did mention that he wanted to play with Monta Ellis
but after this off season, it’s hard to believe the front office has the ability to lock up any free agent.
The larger issue is
With Hedo’s contract, we will be a capped out team. Howard has no incentive to stay here, since his contract will eat up the rest of the cap and the Warriors would peak as first or second round fodder.
If you're watching a blowout, you can pass the time by counting the double teapots.
Samurai Champloo > Macross
He did mention that he wanted to play with Monta Ellis
maybe he just wants to toss him around a bit?

Warriors need to go all-in for Dwight
Extension or no extension, the Warriors shouldn’t even think twice about sending whatever it takes to get Dwight Howard (most likely a package involving Curry):
Two reasons:
1) The team as presently constructed won’t win the ultimate goal of winning a championship.
This team probably won’t even be a consistent playoff contender. Sure, Curry might develop into another former Warrior that flourishes and becomes a star in a different setting (Vince Carter, Gilbert Arenas, Larry Hughes, among others), but ask yourself this: Can Curry’s ankles hold up? And even if your answer to this question is yes, can the Warriors win with this small backcourt? They haven’t proved that they can so far, and how much time can we afford to give them? In addition, the Warriors haven’t had a defensive presence or quality big man since since…Adonal Foyle.
2) The Warriors need a spark in the worse way.
Lacob and Gruber struck out big time in free agency this summer, settling for the uninspiring Kwame Brown. They need a splash to reinvigorate this franchise and show just how committed they are to winning. The Warriors haven’t been good for awhile, but let’s see the last time they gambled on a disgruntled superstar.
2005: The Warriors traded Speedy Claxton and Dale Davis for Baron Davis. The trade immediately transformed the Warriors: they were no longer the laughingstocks of the league and we actually got some attention: not only the franchise, but our fanbase as well. Yes, Dwight won’t come as cheap and yes, he might bolt after a year, but bringing Dwight to the Bay would leave an indelible print on the team’s history.
After years of watching mismanagement, ineptitude, the underdogs always showing promise yet always falling short, the fan base unleashed emotions bottled up in a thrilling and unforgettable playoff run. We will never forget that. Here, another opportunity presents itself: With this shortened lockout season and wide-open Western Conference, anything could happen. Dwight could make it happen. If the opportunity presents itself, the Warriors need to go all-in.

If Howard comes he will then leave but the"perception" of the Warriors might change a bit and one playoff year might happen this year....
..and the owners will be applauded for guts and that is what this is about…..kinda like…bomb bad old Germany into oblivion and good democratic Germany emerges out of the ashes. This rabid fan base will hold on but for the next 2/3 years no draft picks and bad contracts….somewhere around 2015 we can start really rebuilding…..all in all probably the best plan.

Forget the night clubs
To make dhoward sign an extension, I’ll throw weekly parties here in my trailer home…and I’ll even invite fellow gsom-ers. We can play board games…who likes yahtsee? Or hungry hungry hippos? We can also bake some cookies, watch re-runs of spongebob, the three stooges, and the wonder years. For entertainment we can impress him with the coconut dance – I’ll just need a few volunteers.

Maybe a Dwight deal is the other direction they were talking about when they didn't sign Fesenko?
"Monta is the MAN." -Bob Fitzgerald
You don't want Dwight as a rental, you want him to stay. It's not worth it to have him as a rental.
It would hurt the team much more in the long term.
