Curry for Turkoglu
If we empty our roster for Howard two things are very clear to me.
1. We will have to include Steph Curry.
2. Howard will not resign with the W's.
We would probably have to offer Curry, Klay, Udoh, Biedrins and Tyler.
So in essence, we're trading Curry, Klay, Udoh, Beans and Tyler for Turkoglu.
Now, I hope I'm wrong and we could resign Dwight long term, but the more likely scenario is Dwight walks and we end up with this roster a year from now (signed players).....
PG - Monta/Jenkins
SG - Rush
SF - Hedo/Wright
PF - Lee
C - ?
That's it!!! So, does management take a chance of gutting the roster?
Giving up Curry and bringing in ANOTHER bad contract is not the answer. Standing pat with our perennial .400 win club is not the answer. What is the answer?
As much as I'd love to have Dwight here, I just don't think I could pull the trigger.
We play in a crappy arena and a market that superstars don't want to come to. The likelihood of having that roster in May, with no draft pick and no real shot at bringing in a superstar in the offseason, just doesn't seem worth it.
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

If gut Lee and Biedrins in a big deal or multiple deals
We’d gut the roster except for expirings and Monta, we’d essentially be completely starting over

Yikes. On the bright side, with that motley cast of characters, we’d have a legit shot at getting a high draft pick.
There will be no extra point!
Agreed
If we make a move like this we’re looking at being a good team maybe 4 years down the road. Do you think there’s any chance we could be a good team in 1-2 years?
Dont forget about no draft picks for 2 years.
Draft picks in 2014 and 1015 will not make us a good team in 4 years….sigh.
This is a total role of the dice or a marketing ploy.

And.. look at 2014/15
Our only cap commitment is David Lee for $15.5 million rest would be from FA’s and players on Rookie contracts.
A Sonics fan without a team... but after 7 seasons now of GS Warriors season tickets have convinced me to adopt the boys from Oakland.
David Lee for $15.5 million

seriously, if this is the worst case, then it is not much different than the team we have now. Not to mention the + for this is that we have more cap space.
So I say go for it, let’s get Howard!
by ILoveWarriorsGirls on Jan 6, 2012 2:37 PM PST up reply actions
Why is it a forgone conclusion that Dwight doesn’t re-sign? He would lose $30,000,000.00 if he walked. That’s a lot of zeroes.
Free agents rarely decide to accept smaller deals. It happens, but it certainly isn’t the norm.
It's not a forgone conclusion -
- but the perception is that Howard has had enough of badly-constructed teams patched around him. He wants the chance to win a title, and that means a team which is capable of putting the right pieces around him.
If he felt we had a strong strategy going forward, I think he’d probably stay. That is a lot of money. But he could get that money (more, even, because of state taxes) staying in Orlando. And he wants out.
But he wants out now, so that he can still sign for that extra $30M
Same with Melo. If we were the team he got traded to, he’d no longer be able to have both a immediate championship contender team and the money. He’d have to choose.
http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/
From his point of view....Lakers are his best shot.
With Howard on the Lakers then Paul might be persuaded to move over there in 2.,depending on how the Clips perform.

be nice if Andrew Bynum took the same kind of offense to this as Lamar
Frankly I don’t know why he isn’t throwing a tantrum over their pursuit of Howard since the end of the lockout.

Sign and Trade
The new CBA still allows for them. We could just as easily do a sign a trade to send Howard were he wants to go and we’d get something back in return for him.
A Sonics fan without a team... but after 7 seasons now of GS Warriors season tickets have convinced me to adopt the boys from Oakland.
While possible, banking on a sign-and-trade bringing back anything of value is an iffy proposition. Generally, what comes back is not of much value (lesser players and draft picks that aren’t likely to be all that good either). The picks that Cleveland got for Lebron are going to be at the back of the draft, players more likely to be baggage than assets.
We’d get something, but that something might not be all that much different from nothing.

that we gave up so much more for the sign and trade of lee than miami did for the sign and trade of lebron

oh yeah, and a second round pick (that we just payed to replace anyways)

that's not even possible
if you knew the rules you would know that
Pretty sure we couldn't have signed him to the contact outright
and he got the money he wanted by signing with them to come here. I don’t think we would have got him without the sign and trade that actually happened.
And like Duby said, we really didn’t lose much at all, even if it seemed like we might have at the time.
http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/
Send him to Utah for our draft pick back and Favors,Kanter and Burks...ha!

Ughh
It would be better for the Warriors if they only give up either Curry and Ekpe or Curry+Klay+Tyler for Howard and Turkoglu.
-the bea$t-
Meh
I think it’s a big risk, but it’s worth it for the Warriors to have a chance to have one of the premier players in the game. Curry is on the radar, but unlikely to get to that level. Monta will never get the respect he deserves, and we don’t have a bad enough team to land a top draft pick. The league has repeatedly shown that you need one or two of these guys to win, or to establish credibility to bring in supporting talent.
If Dwight ends up leaving, we could hopefully trade Monta to a place where he can win, land a pick or a promising rookie, wait out the Turk and Lee contracts, and be rebuilt by.. 2016… interesting.

This really magnifies the impact of that wasted amnesty huh?!
If we had held onto that amnesty to use next year, we could have dumped Turkoglu’s contract as a back-up plan and had tons of money and options to rebuild when Howard says goodbye.
I am still in favor of the trade, but we are in a much worse position now.
Couldn't have amnestied Turk anyways
The amnesty clause only applies to players on the roster BEFORE the CBA, not acquired after it. It sucks I know!

it’s an incredible arena. I think it’s the oldest used one in the league, but it keeps getting upgraded and it’s being held up really, really well. And as you said, the fans make it extraordinary.

by Uwe Blog on Jan 7, 2012 6:45 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
It’s “old” in the sense of having been built a long time ago, but the facilities are top notch, the views are good even from way up high, the capacity is huge, and best of all it gets really, really loud.
The Superdome in New Orleans is also old (and comes with way more baggage, after the Katrina refugee situations) but the Saints clearly have the biggest home field advantage in football.
Alas, you probably want to build an 85 person private “basketball viewing and gentlemen’s club” at the top of Nob Hill that allows “investors” to park their Bentley’s courtside.

But there’s no way that someone as historically homophobic as Howard resigns in the San Francisco. He’s out at the first sign of a rainbow flag.

I’ve honestly never heard of this. What are you referring to?
I’d also note that the rainbow flag flies with equal pride in other enlightened places like NY, LA, Chicago and Atlanta. One hopes that, as with the civil rights movement, it’s only a matter of time before that kind of pride and resistance to ignorance and fear becomes part of what makes our country great.

I'm certainly making a stretch
There’ve been a couple of interviews that came off as more than a little homophobic, one in particular where he angrily stops the interview to ask why another man is blowing him kisses. Coupling that with the bleeding heart Christianity, I am formulating my own assumption. As far as the other regions of our country sharing in the civility of gay pride, that may be true, but I’d be hard pressed to imagine a city more iconic to the gay pride movement than the city by the bay. It’s still an assumption.

I don't like how people are seeing "oh monta makes a few flashy passes he must be a PG now"
and then think Curry is expendable. I’m sorry but Monta is still not a PG and still plays way better off the ball… He still dribbles dangerously high leading to more turnovers… he still passes last minute when he’s in the middle of the air and has no choice… he still has a very streaky jumpshot… he still can’t run an offense (offense is always stagnant when he’s the PG)… and he still isn’t playing good defense… So I still don’t get why everyone’s so excited over a few games when he’s still the same player albeit not scoring as efficiently due to the slower pace of the Warriors offense.
think... why does everyone want Curry in a trade
but no one wants Monta? You can’t tell me 31 GMs and probably more coaches are all Curry fanboys who can’t scout talent… Given equal contracts (rookie contracts) and equal age (Monta at Curry’s age but with the same skills he has now) and keep Curry’s ankles and everyone still wants Curry because he is all around a better player and can be an all star PG while Monta shows no flashes of such and has proven that he cannot be a PG.
Monta STILL can’t dribble with his left hand. ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Honestly, I’m so tired of waiting for this team full of potential to become good. It makes me sick to my stomach seeing the dubs lose. Don’t get me wrong, I love watching this team, but it’s very frustrating seeing us lose from being ahead or not able to win close games. And I mean for real we might as well. I love Curry as much as the next person, but unless his ankle gets a lot better we are in trouble. Dwight for one year isnt the best thing, but hey atleast i can probably be happy with the Warriors for atleast one season. This is basically just venting after seeing the loss to Utah but lets make something happen. This potential crap is not working at all.

You get Howard
Thats the main problem with this franchise is the loser attitude. Many people just assume that Howard would want to leave because why would anyone want to stay at Golden State. You make this move and you sell him on this team. If your core, big three whatever you want to call it is Ellis, Lee, Howard. You got something and you can sell that as long as you do not have a loser attitude.
Now lets say he leaves, you do what the Oakland A’s are doing right now. Billy Beane knows you don’t want to be an average team, you either you want to be real bad or real good. In basketball terms you do not want to be the team that wins 35-40 games a season(normal season) because you are not going anywhere there. You start trading assets and get real young, real fast and real bad. You rebuild and set something up for two years from now.
That’s exactly why we haven’t seen a good team in Oakland in a long, long time. We’re never bad enough to get good, but never good enough to build a winning reputation…

Yes, I agree. I wouldn’t complain about a trade that landed us Dwight, that’s for sure. Even if he walked. At least it’s doing something to try to build a winner.

As a warrior Fan
Here is what I meant about being real young we trade our older talent for young potential if Dwight Doesn’t. We trade our talent quickly if Dwight leaves and this what I meant when I said real fast. Not the speed of the players, the Warriors start just fire selling everyone for young potential. And yes I meant for us to get to the level of being real bad as in terrible like 10-20 win team so we can draft a star or two, while acquiring young pieces with short and small contracts to be able to set us up for a trade for the future.
I am tired of watching the Warriors fight for the 8th seed that is what they have been doing the last 20 years. How many playoff appearances has that got the Warriors? I don’t know about the rest of you but I would love to see a perennial playoff team and if you look at the history of the NBA you do that by having stars on your team.
The Warriors have the potential to get a superstar in Dwight Howard, you get him. If he leaves you go with the back up plan and tank. Start over even though I really enjoy watching some of the players on this team. Warriors need to make this happen. The team this year if nothing happens is going to find a way to win 25 games and end up getting the 9th spot in the Draft and giving up the pick.
by Oracle Junkie on Jan 8, 2012 7:51 PM PST up reply actions
It’s worth noting that there are franchises that are “mediocre” in the sense of rarely making deep playoff runs which are nonetheless far better managed and consistently more successful than ours. Teams like Portland, Houston, Atlanta, Denver…they lack superstar level talent and still seem to be able to put a winning product on the court.
Sittin in my scraper watchin Oakland goin wild, ta-dow!

Lets look at those teams
Portland has been a consistent playoff contender but they also had Roy and Aldridge is a star. I would take Aldridge over anyone in a Warriors uniform. I believe he was drafted 2nd overall and Roy 6th, high draft picks turning into talent. How do you do that? You Suck
Denver has been putting a consistent playoff team because they had a star in Melo. Now they are doing solid because they traded that star for a bunch of above average players. When those players start wanting big contracts like Nene has, they will lose that depth and become a very average team.
Atlanta has Joe Johnson who is star even though he is overpaid and Al Horford and J-Smooth. All three are stars in there own right thus they have a solid team.
Finally you say Houston, they lost Yao there biggest star and they didnt make the playoffs last year. They have some solid players in Lowry, Martin and Scola, there just not that good.
Its the NBA, with the way contracts set up, its about your top three people. Ellis, Curry and Lee just are not going to cut it. So you make the trade and do everything to keep Howard. If you lose him, you go get younger and just trade away everything.
Does anyone on here really believe we can just keep adding average talent and become a good team?
