min: Tim Roye's Game Recap
Mark Jackson
On Kobe Bryant:
"He's playing great. Very aggressive, carrying that team offensively and he's their lone play maker. He's playing great but that's no surprise, that's who he is."

On Building On Tonight's Game:
"Well tomorrow night's another game and we get out of here and get ready for it, take care of business. We're on our home court and there's a great opportunity to get a victory."

On The Performance Of Dorell Wright:
"He had some shots and he looked like his old self. Hopefully he can build on it because we need him."

On His Technical Foul:
"I asked for a technical foul because my guys were working their tails off and I refuse to watch them fight and come up on the short end."
Kwame Brown
On Defending Andrew Bynum:
"He's a grown man now. He's grown into his body well. He's a lot more physical now than when he first came in, I just kind of know his moves. It's really difficult when you post Kobe Bryant and you have to take your body off of him because he is so long at the rim so I just tried to keep my body on him the whole time. It allowed Kobe Bryant to go one-on-one a lot more than we wanted him to."

"That was my young fella. I taught him everything he knows. I’m one of the better defenders in the league and we played against each other every day in practice. I told him, If you can score against me, you can score on anyone."

On Being Out-Rebounded By 13:
"It was poor rotations. When you have arguably the best player in the game one-on-one on the block against anybody, it's kind of hard to take your body off Andrew at 7'1" or off Pau at 7'1". If you move your body they walk you under the rim. They have a great scheme going with posting Kobe."
David Lee
On Kobe Bryant:
"A lot of their shots they were making in the fourth quarter were Kobe Bryant fade-aways from 17 feet. That's a tough shot to defend. They got to the foul line a lot, Kobe did in the fourth quarter. He had a very good game tonight but he was really the only guy tonight that killed us statistically. It's tough when he has a night like that."

On Defending Lakers Big Men:
"I think for the most part we held Bynum and Gasol in check...We can take that away but it's about getting stops as a team. It's not about which guy does it. The fact of the matter is that Kobe had a big game and he played well."
Monta Ellis
On The Team's 2-5 Start:
"This is a long season and we have a lot more games to play. We're going to turn the corner eventually. It's just a learning experience right now. I feel great about this team. I love my teammates and we're going to get better every day."

On The Team Missing Stephen Curry:
"We have to go out there with the guys that we've got. He is a big part and we know that, but he's not here right now so someone else is going to have to step up. We just have to stick together."

Nice to see Klay finally take the lid off the basket. Maybe we can finally retire all the nicknames…

by WYK on Jan 6, 2012 10:40 PM PST reply actions

hes good in a catch and shoot situation..

mainly coming off curls.. its when he was to dribble that its a problem.

the warrior bright spot for me this season has been monta’s ability to pass the ball though.

by bballinpacisler on Jan 6, 2012 10:45 PM PST up reply actions

and monta was pretty much the PG the 2nd half

running the pick and roll w/Kwame almost exclusively for quite a long stretch. He made some great plays, and I’ve always thought he has most value as a scoring/penetrating/dishing PG, but he still needs to make better decisions when attacking the basket in the teeth of the defense. He can get to the basket and create mismatches at will off that pick and roll at the top of the key, we should be getting even more positive plays out of it.

by salary_cap on Jan 6, 2012 10:52 PM PST up reply actions

Good game for Klay

I’d love to see what the people who labeled bust so early in the season have to say. He did struggle but people seem to forget he’s a rookie and needs time. I definitely saw some potential today, his stroke was so clean that it looked like he was Ray Allen coming off screens or maybe Rip. But then again it’s only one game.

by Darkness on Jan 6, 2012 10:48 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly.

Its ridiculous that people on here are calling him a bust after the first few games of his NBA career.

by G-State on Jan 6, 2012 11:10 PM PST up reply actions

It’s still only one game, although he has definitely shown improvement the last 2 games, and glad to see that they were on the road too.

This Klay was the Klay I’ve been raving to all my friends about after I watched him play in the Impact League during the summer. However, it’s just only one game, and he needs to prove that he can be consistent, and also more decisive when he is handling the ball. Glad to see him shoot so well tonite. Other than his 2 misses, I think he only touched the rim once on all his makes. Everything was nothing but net.

This is my dream for tonight:

Curry and Klay sniping from outside w/ Monta dishing inside to a big who can also pass out to Curry and Klay when needed.

(so wish we had got Love instead of Lee – that’s my pipedream)

I don't personally watch Wolves games but...

Isn’t Love a horrible defender like Lee?(Please correct me if I’m wrong) Just because he dominates in Wolves system doesn’t mean he’ll be a dominant beast in our system just look at Lee wasn’t he considered to be a beast during his time with the Knicks?

by Darkness on Jan 6, 2012 10:46 PM PST up reply actions

True, defense not so much..

Love is a great rebounder and also one of the best passers in the NBA.

Over

by cybermaldonado on Jan 6, 2012 10:48 PM PST up reply actions

I guess it's debatable whether Lee and Love are almost identical defensively.

People on the web seem to compare him to Lee defensively from what I have read so far. I’ve also read that Love sometimes positions himself early for a rebound rather than alter shots. (Honestly I have no real background knowledge on Love as a complete player so I’ll just stop there and let someone who has actually seen him play extensively talk)

by Darkness on Jan 6, 2012 10:54 PM PST up reply actions

Love does indeed position himself defensively for rebounds. He gets so many rebounds precisely because he works extremely hard to box out and get position on his opponents. He is the new Barkley in that way.

well i think he just had an offnight tonight.

He hasn’t scored with high efficiency since 2007-08. Maybe he’s having an off four years?

His passing/ballhandling has been a revelation, though: 7.7 assists per 36, to only 2.7 turnovers. That’s, like, better than Derrick “MVP” Rose did last season.

On the downside… rebounding, which has been on decline for the last five years, dropping from avaerage-ish for a shooting guard to terrible even for a point guard. It’s pretty interesting to look at his rebound/assist trends over the past five years:

Monta since 2007/08
Rebounds per 36 mins.: 4.7 — 4.4 — 3.5 — 3.1 — 2.6
Assists per 36 mins: 3.7 — 3.8 — 4.6 — 5.0 — 7.7

It’s almost as if he’s morphing from a wing to a PG before our eyes.

There will be no extra point!

by Sleepy Freud on Jan 7, 2012 10:06 AM PST up reply actions

Nobody can keep Monta from the basket/paint area

on a high pick and roll. He still needs to make better decisions once he gets there, but puttin ghim at PG will help minimize his weaknesses both on offense and defense.

by salary_cap on Jan 7, 2012 4:04 PM PST up reply actions

40% is still below his norm for FG%

especially considering, as in other games this season, he’s missing jumpers that he does make with regularity.

but the PG thing is interesting, though I wish he’d do a little more on the glass

http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/

by Brownie13 on Jan 7, 2012 5:05 PM PST up reply actions

Monta

has reminded me recently of a slightly poorer man’s Derrick Rose, falling short mostly in the areas of decision making and passing, but he seems to be getting better, and I think that he is definitely best as a PG getting his teammates involved.

by asanddubs on Jan 7, 2012 2:56 AM PST up reply actions

Maybe the way he's playing as a

penetrating ball handler/facilitator will convince the Warriors to part ways with Curry and move Monta to PG?…

by salary_cap on Jan 7, 2012 4:05 PM PST up reply actions

Value to the right teams has to be going up!

Any team that has solid bigs that can finish at the rim must be looking at the scoring potential Monta’s drive and dish game provide. Seems like a very marketable capability.

Never been a huge fan of Dorell Wright like a lot of people, but I thought he had a solid shooting game tonight finally….Thought he played some solid D too, but he made some bad choices, which cost them the game.

Monta’s passing skills have been pretty impressive these last couple of games, but still needs some better scoring efficiency. Still, nice passing Mr. Ellis.

Kwame Brown is looking like Kwame Brown out there. No surprise.

Klay finally hit some J’s (not joints).

David Lee still depresses me.

With those kinds of guns, Jenkins needs to drive to the paint more.

Nate Robinson….
Fitz: Nate Robinson is the only player in NBA history to have won 3 dunk contests!!!
Barnett: He won 2, 1 was given to him.
Classic line from JB.

Anyways, good effort tonight by the Warriors especially without 2/5 starters. Let’s keep on losing, we need another Davis to take us back into the playoff picture.

Monta’s passing skills have been pretty impressive these last couple of games, but still needs some better scoring efficiency. Still, nice passing Mr. Ellis.

Monta makes some really really nice passes … but I think judging him by them is sort of like judging his scoring by his made shots.

I still see an offense which bogs down when he dominates the ball. And he creates a lot of shots – he’s a better passer out of the “ball dominating wing” strategy than SJax was – but the everybody starts standing around, and he ends up taking far more shots than guys who are having better offensive nights.

So I see him more of a player who’s capable of making great passes than as a great passer: for most of the game his shot was just not falling, and he still led the team in FGA. His ball domination still turns Lee into a jump shooter or makes him disappear from the offense entirely. To be a great passer you have to be as happy to pass as you are to shoot, and that’s just clearly not the case with Monta.

by Ronaldinho on Jan 7, 2012 9:53 AM PST up reply actions

Nice to have a PG with an a/t% > 2.

by TrueGSfan on Jan 7, 2012 11:07 AM PST up reply actions

Weren't you attacking me for relying on stats in another thread?

I knew somebody would come back with a comment about Monta’s assists. But really, watch the flow of the whole offense. There’s so much less motion.

Your PG shouldn’t be leading (by a huge margin) your team in FG% when he’s having a terrible night shooting.

by Ronaldinho on Jan 7, 2012 4:00 PM PST up reply actions

There’s so much less motion.

Welcome to the NBA, where teams give it to their best players to make things happen. This is quite common these days.

by salary_cap on Jan 7, 2012 4:07 PM PST up reply actions

And yet, with other teams, the "best player" shares the ball enough that it doesn't turn everyone else into stick figures.

Monta Ellis is the only player in the league’s top 20 in total FGA who’s played only 6 games. About half the list has played 8.

So, no, every team does not do what the Warriors do with Monta.

by Ronaldinho on Jan 7, 2012 5:07 PM PST up reply actions

I've been watching.

And I see what you’re talking about, but I think it’s much better than it was last year, and him dominating the ball is happening with much less frequency than last year. He’s getting the ball of screens more, in the post, cutting, give and go.

http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/

by Brownie13 on Jan 7, 2012 5:08 PM PST up reply actions

How do you blame people standing around on the guy with the ball?

Nash dominates the ball, people move.

Rose dominates the ball, people move.

Westbrook dominates the ball, people move.

LeBron dominates the ball, people move.

Chris Paul dominates the ball, people move.

http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/

by Brownie13 on Jan 7, 2012 5:07 PM PST up reply actions

Kobe dominates the ball ... people don't.

You know what all the guys on that list have in common?

They’re all much better passers than Monta Ellis.

Nash dominates the ball … but only ends up shooting SIX TIMES less per 36 than Monta does. In other words – the guys move because they know that they’re going to get the ball when they get open. (Actually, since MOnta gets to the line more than Nash, that makes the discrepancy even bigger).

People stop moving and working to get open when they know it doesn’t matter. It’s human nature, and it happens to almost every player.

I actually thought that his ability to motivate the non-Kobe Lakers was Phil Jackson’s greatest strength as a coach. The difference between that team during Jackson’s first retirement was staggering. You usually can’t have someone play that selfishly and expect good effort from the rest of the team.

by Ronaldinho on Jan 7, 2012 5:12 PM PST up reply actions

I don't agree that the 3 in the middle are better passers.

Obviously, I’ll give you Nash and Paul. They’re true point guards.

To me, the thing is, Monta IS passing. More than he ever has. Better than he ever has. A few times when he shouldn’t even. And the team isn’t finishing, or just not open. The only thing I put on him is an inability to motivate them to move as a leader, but the bulk of the blame goes to his teammates, and then to the coaching. The same principle applies to Kobe, when he is playing on the ball a lot.

I guess we’re sorta talking about a chicken-and-the-egg thing. You think player movement disappears when the two players start to try to dominate. I think it’s already bad, forcing their hand.

It’s really not that hard to move on offense, even when your best player is trying to score. That’s a part of the NBA. You just need to stay motivated and ready. I think one man creating all the offense is an absolute terrible strategy in the NBA, even when everyone else sucks. That is not however, what I think is happening in the Lakers, or in the Warriors situation. It will especially not true for us when Steph returns.

I’m putting the onus on Dorell, Klay, Nate, Kwame, Lee, Andris, Rush, and McGuire to move off of the ball. I think Curry has done the best job of that to date, but he hasn’t been able to stay on the court. It will get better when he’s back, because distributing duties will start to even out, and ball movement will be better, which always facilitates movement away from the ball.

But in no case, can I ever blame the player with the ball (as long as they aren’t playing bad), for their teammates not moving.
