Tom Ziller has put together SB Nation's first power rankings of the season with the Golden State Warriors coming in at #24. That is one spot higher than the Warriors were in Jeremias Engelmann's RAPM power rankings.

my eyes are burning!!!!

gah, ranked below the Cavs and Raptors

the tank is rolling along now, but I feel like once we get all our starters back, we’ll start to climb up from the basement…to the top of the stairs (aka 9th seed)

have you not watched other teams this year?

minnesota is playing good basketball, as is toronto.

I live and breath NBA

I purchase a league pass and I wont put my 169 dollars into waste not to watch these games. But Timberwolves rank as 8 is straight unbelievable. It is just the Rubio hype thats all. Like the Clippers of last year Blake the great hype before CP3 era. So tell me do you watch the game or just watch the highlight on NBA.com?

meh, outrage is misplaced
Timberwolves rank as 8 is straight unbelievable.

we are still so early in the season, it is fine, IMO that t-wolves are ranked ahead of us right now. Dubs have only won 2 games, Clippers are leading the division with 4 wins

it’s still way too early to really be drawing any meaningful conclusions at this point in the year…this is just fun internet fodder

I have no doubt about the Clippers this year. I said Clippers before CP3 era Blake the great Hype is much like Rubio hype right now. But Timberwolves as rank 8 Tom Ziller kinda loose his credibility just a bit!

They might rank 8th in "Teams Tafka tunes in to watch"

Behind the Warriors, the teams I perceive as elite (Miami, Chicago, Lakers, OKC, Dallas etc.) they are the best watch in the NBA.

Which is a big jump, because in the 2010-11 version of this poll they were 28 or so, with only Charlotte and Cleveland being less intriguing

oopsey....lack of dilligence

sorry, I have the Clipps tagged as one of my team on yahoo, and underneath them it says

Los Angeles Clippers
4-2, 1st Pacific

double oopsey, yahoo was right (I think)

based on win percentage, Clipps are ahead, although they have less wins

lakers: .600
clipps: .667

just further re-enforces my point though. This early in the season, these are pretty minimal differences in records

It’s a power ranking, not a ranking of which team he thinks is actually the best team. It’s just focusing on right now and not concerned with last year or what happens in 2 months.

Apparently the W's have played the league's toughest schedule so far

and there’s still the next two games vs the Heat and Magic. Wow.

Kings shouldn’t be that much higher, but Dwane Casey has got the Raptors playing not too bad, in spite of their record.

New coach, new season...same old Dubs

Lets not let Curry’s ankle be an excuse…we still make stupid mistakes on both ends of the court, we still don’t play great D, and offensive execution is so inconsistent. Expect another mediocre season, at best, fellas.
I think they will progress as the season goes on, but with this squad, even if healthy, won’t make the playoffs. Lacob’s win-now philosophy should now turn to trade now…whether that be Ellis or Curry or basically anyone on this team.
Unless you are happy with mediocrity, we need to make household changes. Better perimeter defender, a more significant post presence to name a couple.

I don't think anyone is saying Curry's ankle is THE excuse

but if he were fully, healthy, there’s no denying we’d be playing much better basketball right now and our record would reflect that. Would that guarantee a Playoff spot? No, but it would put us in a better position to contend for one, and improvement on defense and offensive consistency (potentially through a trade or building chemistry) would build even further towards that Playoff spot.

But I agree. We need ‘wholesale’ changes. I say blow up the team except for Curry, Klay, and Udoh, let Curry rest his ankle for either most or the entirety of the season (and during that time travel to experts all over the world to work on strengthening it and altering his footwork to prevent further future injury). With Klay and Udoh at the core, we should manage to keep our pick in this ultra-deep draft, and hopefully select someone who complements the aforementioned 3 and has a lot of potential.

With four rookie contracts, we’ll have cap room in this upcoming much anticipated free agency, and hopefully the free agents will see the potential of playing with Curry, Klay, a rookie (SF hopefully), and Udoh (What would Howard think about finishing off that lineup?).

With these moves, we’ll be contenders next season. It’s too easy to come true, so there’s no way it will. We’ll keep building around Monta and Curry, keep holding on to Biedrins’ contract (I respect his play but he’s clogging $9 million a year) and remain stuck in mediocrity. It’s just the story of the Warriors :/

Udoh

I do not understand why fans like Udoh….he should not be part of the “core” for any future Dubs team. Will he ever be a viable starter? Right now, I don’t think so. Would so much rather have Greg Monroe (who is a decent starter and a LEGIT C) over Udoh. Maybe he develops an offensive game…chances are he won’t.

by axelfoley on Jan 10, 2012 10:53 AM PST up reply actions

the reason Udoh works is because he can play PF or C, and fits in well with our other personnel

personally, I would have started him over C Wright, and I also think the line between starter and first man off the bench is over rated anyways

and why don’t you think he’ll develop an offensive game? (let’s ignore the fact that his defense is awesome)
So far this year, he looks much improved, and he seems to have a fairly soft touch on those little baby hooks

Very good points you make

I guess I’m cynical due to two decades of failure. I definitely agree with you, Udoh’s developing the baby hook. I think he was a senior when he came out for the draft? And an old one (23) too. Players at that age who are still raw….I’m not sure the track record is very good, but I could be wrong. He’s got a low rebounding rate, is shaky at the FT line, too. Maybe this improves with more playing time. If he can develop his offensive game, I’d be very happy.

The NBA Power Rankings are more real

and their rankings have the Wolves at 21 (Warriors are 22). Not sure where SB Nation figures we’ve had the League’s toughest schedule either.

by centerre on Jan 9, 2012 9:23 PM PST reply actions

This ranking is more

legit. Putting Timberwolves on SB Nation as no# 8 for power ranking is ludacris. Like I said they are fun to watch because they have a bunch of PG on their roster. Who can play up and down. And Kevin Love who eat double double for breakfast. Randolph and Tolliver both X Warriors. Beasley getting injured who is black hole. But like I said they are not much better than the Warrior.

I disagree with those ranking in so many ways.

that I won’t even bother to get into because it’s so early in the season and mostly speculation at this point anyway .

Except this:

The only saving grace of the Warriors having the West’s worst record: they’ve played the league’s toughest schedule to date.

Should read more like this:“The only saving grace of the Warriors having the West’s worst record – other than that they’ve played the league’s toughest schedule to date – is that they played most of their games without all their key players, and the one game where they did have all their players for an entire game they put up a very nice win against the 3rd ranked Bulls.”

Lots of teams are dealing with injuries and miss key players all the time. Good teams work past that. Heat have lost Dwyane Wade and Spurs lost Ginobili and they still have good records.

Okay let's compare the Warriors to the Heat then...

After all, that is the first comparison that comes to my mind when I think of the Warriors.

Yeah but we're not a "Good team"

I think healthy, and in sync, we have the opportunity to make the playoffs, but we’re not a team that can overcome significant setbacks and still do so.

:"The only saving grace of the Warriors having the West’s worst record

is that it increases their chance of retaining their draft pick in a strong draft year?

Last season was the healthiest I can recall the Warriors ever being, and they managed 36 wins. To expect that health to hold up again is naive.

To think that our depth issues could be solved with a #11 and two second rounders is naive. And to think that scrubs from bad/mediocre teams are the answer is also naive.

I’m sorry that so many of the fans bought into Lacob’s promises. He’s just trying to sell season tickets, which is exactly the same thing Cohan did. He never fooled me though. I knew this team was mostly garbage, and have been calling for a rebuild for several seasons.

Interesting that the Raptors and TWolves have leapfrogged passed us again. Washington will pass us next year, when they get another top 5 pick.

As long as we hold onto this core, will we have more losses than wins. The sooner we rebuild (and I mean tank for 3 years) the better.

I recall Curry injury and DLee’s arm bite as being very important parts of our failures? IIRC we were rolling pretty good before Lee went down and then never seemed to recover?

We were playing ok before Lee went down, but he didn’t miss all that much time. Curry didn’t either.

Injuries are a lousy excuse, and one that crappy organizations hide behind. Portland can lose it’s top player AND it’s #1 overall pick and is still better than us year after year. Every team loses players to injury. We didn’t have a single player lose the season to injury.

If you check the games lost to injury, you’ll find that we were healthier last season than we have been in (at the very least) a long time.

but Lee played hurt for a long time after he came back and binky was probable still not 100% . We are just not a very strong team so the injuries matter. I don’t know how portland as done so well playing thru their injuries but props to them.
