Warriors ready to make a deal before trade deadline

"We're working day and night and we're hopeful," Riley told NBA.com on Monday night. "But what will not happen is, we won't do something that sets us back just to do a deal. We want to find the right deal, and if we get one of those we'll do it. I don't know what the odds of it are right now."

Humm... Hopefully this is better than traded away BWright for a 2nd round pick and gave away JLin and RWilliam. Yes, my expectation is low!

I am patient, and my expectations are low

just don’t let me down, Dubs!!

nah, seriously though, I don’t see us making a significant move, for the simple reason that we seem too unrealistically high on our guys. Best I’m hoping for is that we can manage to jettison the empty husk that used to be Beidrens

My expectations are also low

But I’m done being patient. If history has shown us anything, it’s that teams that evaluate talent well and are proactive are the ones that succeed. Though many may disagree with me, I think Riley and co. are actually pretty good talent evaluators. The problem is how much they continue to overvalue the W’s talent.

The quotes from the article are concerning to me because it appears as though they still believe this is a playoff team. I was happy to see the Warriors win last night, but each win (however few and far between) strengthens my fear that the Warriors will continue to believe that this team has the talent to compete.

by ERock386 on Feb 21, 2012 2:21 PM PST up reply actions

should probably clarify

W’s pretty good at evaluating talent with regards to the draft, but not in other areas (especially their own players once on the team)

by ERock386 on Feb 21, 2012 2:22 PM PST up reply actions

well, I can see their point, just not their rationale
it appears as though they still believe this is a playoff team.

ok, I guess I could see it.
If somehow, our goal was simply to make the playoffs, this squad could almost get it done. Throw in some homer vision, and BOOM, playoffs

My main problem is that they seem unwilling/unable to admit that we will need a major roster overhaul (to the starters) if we want to seriously talk about fielding a quality team

I don't like to talk about being a playoff team (like Riley and Lacob do)

I’d prefer they try to put together a contender, not just make the playoffs. They seem to think that sneaking as the 8 seed is enough, even if it means sacrificing the potential for this team moving forward.

The goal should be a championship team, not a playoff team. The playoffs come with putting together a contender, or a quality team (as you define it). I guess that’s what’s frustrating about the W’s. They’ll gladly sacrifice the future to put together a team that maxes out at a 6 seed and a round one exit.

by ERock386 on Feb 21, 2012 2:41 PM PST up reply actions

at this point, they must be becoming aware of the crap show that they inherited. My guess is that they know it will take a few years to turn around, and want to keep the fans engaged (hence no full rebuild)

what’s less clear to me is how much of the PR is pure BS, and how much is truly associated with the FO believing that this is a playoff team as is

well, I'm not so sure

Klay seems like a long-term investment (or at least, I certainly didn’t see him as the player best able to contribute right away)

I think the FO is toeing a dangerous line between competing now, and looking towards the future.

i agree. they have a good knack of identifying talent and developing young talent.

however, they seem to lack in the art of deal making. But i do think larry can get some things done especially with Monta this season.

Nah not Biedrins

we turned down that package of expiring contracts, remember? We’re high, even on underperforming centers!

he's on the trading block?

I know that was mentioned in the summer, but especially with Horford hurt, I don’t see them trading him this season. And besides, he’s a PF…..they’re not gonna want Lee for him, which means he won’t fit well with our team.

Only deal for Biedrins

would be taking on a worse deal. If he was expiring end of this season, then maybe he’d have value. But there’s two more years.

Is it possible to sell him to a Euro team? Serious question, and I think Biedrins would like that.

The only trade I see coming would be Ellis and/or Dorell. Brandon Rush has earned the starting spot from Dorell and at Dorell’s salary, he could be a valuable piece for somebody needing shooting (hello Chicago)…Dorell and Ellis for Noah?

by ERock386 on Feb 21, 2012 2:37 PM PST reply actions

Nothing will happen. We will continue to be a team in contention for the 8th seed.

Also, I don’t like the trade for Dwight, since he will leave. If Lacob wants to rebuild, how about getting some picks instead of Dwight? This is why I never got the Curry for Dwight rumors – if Lacob was really willing to let Dwight leave after his contract was up, why didn’t we just trade Curry for picks instead?

I don’t know what the odds of it are right now.

I wonder what the front office know, if there is any.

This sounds like Riley really “wish” to make a good deal but he has no cule how. This makes me feel any of us can do a better job than Riley.

ANDERSON VAREJAO

That’s who I’d make my main target if I were the Warriors.

Okafor, Millsap, Gortat, and Tyrus Thomas would also be on my short list.

If we’re trying to add without breaking up our core in anticipation of going on a playoff run, these guys seem like guys that could help for the right price.

http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/

by Brownie13 on Feb 21, 2012 4:20 PM PST reply actions

he'd be an interesting target

Not sure how willing the Cavs are to part with him (probably not very likely). The Cavs strike me as a team that’s been better than expected and I think they like what they have.

What you’d have to ask yourself, is whether you’d give up something like Klay, Wright, and Udoh for Varejao if that’s what it takes.

by ERock386 on Feb 21, 2012 4:23 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think I'd trade Udoh.

But I’d be willing to take back a contract they probably don’t want and definitely don’t need like Gibson’s. I’d also certainly be willing to throw them back some cash and whatever 2nd round picks we have. Klay would almost definitely have to be part of a potential trade, though, unless they have interest in Kwame’s expiring or in Biedrins.

I’m not sure what their asking price would be, but he’s got potentially 4 years left on his contract and he’s going to turn 30 this year, making him almost a decade older than their new star. They’re also not likely to be a playoff team this season. They are 9th in the East, but I don’t know anyone, as bad as Boston has been playing and as well as New York has, that thinks either of them will miss the post-season. I don’t know why the Cavaliers would think much different. You would think, since they’ve already entered a rebuild, that they’d be looking to surround Kyrie with more youth, rather than hold on to good players who are over 30. Antawn is almost certainly gone after this season, as is Anthony Parker. Getting rid of Andy would help speed that process along as well.

http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/

by Brownie13 on Feb 21, 2012 5:01 PM PST up reply actions

I was actually thinking I wouldn’t trade Klay. If you’re trading for Varejao, do you really need Udoh? I think Udoh and Wright for Varejao is a pretty reasonable trade. If you can, maybe you squeeze Casspi out of them too.

Udoh and Wright for Varejao and Casspi. You lose some youth and flexibility, but it gives the W’s the center they’ve been trying for, and he really seems like he’d be a good match with Lee in the frontcourt. On the downside, I’d then be forced to root for Varejao.

by ERock386 on Feb 21, 2012 6:03 PM PST up reply actions

I wouldn't want to trade either.

But I think you have to give Udoh more opportunities. It’s been said a thousand times, but it seems like you can always find shooters (which is all Klay is right now, though he has plenty of time to expand his game). I don’t know that we can find more big men who can do what Udoh has done defensively for us all season, or what he did last night.

If Varejao could be had without trading either of them, that’d be even better. But for now, if one had to go, I’d prefer to keep Ekpe, even if we were adding another good defensive big man.

Okafor, Millsap, Gortat, and Tyrus Thomas would also be on my short list.

What a baffling list of names.

by Spider Jerusalem on Feb 21, 2012 4:34 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

I'm absolutely sure that Thomas is the most baffling.

But yes, there wasn’t anything specific I was targeting with my list other than being capable of playing at least one of the 4 or 5. I just think that the relative cost to get these guys would be far cheaper than they’re actually worth. I think this might hold especially true for Okafor and Thomas, which is why they are there in the first place.

http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/

by Brownie13 on Feb 21, 2012 4:48 PM PST up reply actions

Okafor and Thomas seem like they would come at an extremely reduced trade cost (Biedrins straight up for Thomas, Biedrins and Wright for Okafor), which is why they make the list. Millsap and Gortat would probably cost closer to market value, but still be good deals. Money shouldn’t be an obstacle. Obviously, you’ve still got to think about future cap concerns, but if you move Biedrins and reduce salary (in the case of Thomas) or pay slightly more for a better player (Okafor), then it seems like a smart move.

http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/

by Brownie13 on Feb 21, 2012 7:33 PM PST up reply actions

or pay slightly more for a better player (Okafor)

It’s almost twice as much. Biedrins is owed $27M, Okafor is due $40.5M (and he has some severe limitations himself).

I’m on board with Millsap and Gortat, no question. And a Beans for Thomas swap is one headcase for another (although Thomas has one more year on his deal), so that’s relatively inoffensive. But Okafor’s contract, combined with Lee’s is ugly. $30M for a whole lot of subpar.

by Spider Jerusalem on Feb 22, 2012 3:29 AM PST up reply actions

I'd take any of those guys, well you'd have to really convince me on Ty Thomas.

I don’t see a huge upgrade and it’d depend on what we give to get. Any of those other guys though sign me up if it doesn’t cost us too much. Monta? Done. Lee? Done. Biedrins + Klay + 2nd? Done twice!

I'd only be interested in Thomas for Biedrins and Jenkins or Chris Wright if they wanted them

I wouldn’t trade anyone else on our roster for him.

I think trading Wright for a second round pick was a good idea. Weren’t using him anyway.

He's their 5th big man...

Behind Mahinmi, Odom (terrible year thus far), and Haywood.

He’s having a good MONTH for the Mavericks. He was coming off the bench mostly in blowouts until February.

http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/

by Brownie13 on Feb 21, 2012 9:09 PM PST up reply actions

He's moved past Mahinmi

but with the kind of roster Carlisle has that’s subject to change at any time.

Odom’s not getting a lot of minutes, but still more than Wright. And that’s playing as terribly as he is. His minutes should skyrocket if he ever turns it around.

Basically, the Mavs have become in desperate need of post play. No shot-blockers, no rebounders (not that Wright is doing that very well either). Dirk was hurt for a bit.

Mahinmi is still rebounding and scoring better overall, but he’s having a bad month. So guess what, his minutes are being cut. You know what’s going to happen to Wright when he has a bad month? Same thing. So until he’s actually played more than the other bigs, he’s still 5th in the rotation.

Have you not also noticed that their entire bench is getting a ton of minutes simply because they’re an old team trying not to get worn down before the playoffs?

I really hope the team falls out of contention so they can rebuild.

If we are anywhere near .500, I’d expect them to go all out to get the 8 seed. I’d love being the 8 seed over that 8-14 pick range but that isn’t going to happen.
