If the Warriors shop Monta Ellis...
Before last year's draft the Timberwolves had a package together involving Michael Beasley, Nikola Pekovic and the #2 overall pick for Monta. Why didn't we do that?!

Saw this in the comments, which deal(s) would you do?
Monta straight-up for a top-8 2012 pick
Monta (?) for Bogut
Monta for Varejao
Monta for Deng
Monta (?) for Noah
Monta for Iguodala
Monta for Gortat
Monta for Asik (+?)
All of the above.
There will be no extra point!

Ask me which one I wouldn't do.
"I thought it was going in," Warriors center Chris Hunter said. "It looked like the invisible man tipped it away at the last second."
"He's chicken curry right now. He'll become beef curry a little later on."
-Keith Smart
I’d be hesitant to do deal for Varejao and a little more hesitant to do Bogut deal (the dude can’t stay healthy).

Why? Varejao is a great rebounder and defender.
Just cause we already have Udoh who plays the same position it would not deter me from getting another quality player in the front court. We need more than two functional bigs in our rotation if we’re realistically thinking about playoffs.

Varejao has been injury prone-ish as well...
Isn’t he missing time this year, and he just came off injury last season.
I wanted Gortat before he headed to PHX. Deng will not be getting traded, CHI feels he is almost as important as D. Rose to their success (highly underrated player, IMO). Same with Noah. And Asik is not proven enough to trade Monta for.
I'd take the pick.
And go after Asik in Free Agency
his contract makes me use some brainers on this decision
plus, at this point, we are much more desperate for a true center than we are for a good wing player

the contract is barely worse than monta's
but his production level is much higher

"barely"?
an additional $3.7 mil, and then 4.9 million…that’s enough to matter IMO
…that’s Rush’s QO next year…more than Dorell, Udoh, or Nate make
may not look like much, but once you start thinking about it, it’s a fairly significant chunk of change

yes but you're missing my point
iggy’s one of those players that earns every dime he’s given. that chunk of change wouldnt feel like it went to waste
It's lonely being the only Warriors fan at UMass :(
oh no, not missing your point, just disagree
Iggy is probably only slightly overpaid…but you add in the Lee contract, plus whatever we extend to Steph…and you’ve got a capped out, fairly mediocre team.
I mean, hell, if these offers were all legit, I think we’d have to seriously consider Noah or Asik “plus”
not saying at all the Iggy might not end up as the wisest move, but it’s hardly a “no-brainer”

alright, i'll settle with that
well put. i was only comparing the two players together and juxtaposing them on our squad as a whole
It's lonely being the only Warriors fan at UMass :(
yeah, we'd definitely be better, IMO
but what next?
on the other hand, without a major roster overhaul, it sure does look like captain Lacob has his sights firmly set on the Hawks model (playoffs!…and then…?)

High draft pick and a huge expiring contract...
And knowing we can use Beasley as trade bait down the line would’ve been good.
Dude, we wouldn’t have gotten the draft pick. It’s right there in the article.

if we did , who would we have right now? enes kanter?

Exactly...
Imagine a young big man core of JT, Ekpe,& Kanter. Klay would be in contest for ROY if he had gotten bigger minutes early on as well.
Ya, that would have been juicy. And if it would have been Kyrie by chance that woulda been seet too

Pekovic was not good before...and Beasley is not good either...
why would we have done it? Only if we could have had their #1 pick…but they didn’t want to give that.

The GSWs apparently asked to expand the deal to include the Timberwolves’ No. 1 pick in last year’s draft, which was 2nd overall and turned out to be Derrick Williams.
At that point, according to the sources, the two sides got stuck negotiating what the GSWs would do then to sweeten it beyond Ellis.
We could’ve gave them Biedrins. If we knew Dorell was gonna fall off this bad this year we could’be gave them him too! lol!
Yeah! Let’s give them a horrible center making 9M a year!!! That would definitely have changed their minds!!!!! Yeah!!

The package was Beasley and Pekovic for Monta. No #2 pick. That’s why the deal didn’t happen. The Warriors wanted the pick as well.
seriously lol

Me: So who (from the 2011 draft class) compares with (Anthony) Davis?
J-Ridah: Biyombo
Well if you consider that Pekovic was an unknown and essentially a throw in, the Warriors were looking at Beasley for Ellis. I would have turned that down too.
by Slightly Hyphy on Feb 21, 2012 10:07 PM PST up reply actions
I guess it’s more about insisting on the pick being included, as though Monta’s worth Beasley, a young big, AND the #2 overall pick.
I agree that I wouldn’t trade Monta for Beasley and an unknown. However, if the TWolves were interested, I find it hard to believe they couldn’t find a deal there with all the young players and picks the TWolves had at the time. I would’ve definitely thrown in the #11 to make something work. Monta and #11 for Beasley, Pekovic, Williams/Kanter, and tons of cap flexibility is still a good deal even with what we knew at the time.
read the article
AND the #2 overall pick
this was the deal breaker, no way the Wolves were going to include it

what's funny about this?
draft pick = YAY!
Pekovich = actual starting center.
Beasley = decent scorer, with many of the same problems as Monta.
kind of an upgrade. and by kind of an upgrade i mean, an upgrade.

What draft pick?
I thought it was turned down because there was no draft pick. Like many have said already, Pekovic was an unknown back then. He didn’t shine until this year.
this
did you guys not read the article?!?!
Dubs wanted the draft pick, but Wolves balked.
Sounds like the deal would have been Monta for Beasely plus Pek

Sounds like Minny wanted more thrown in if they were to include the pick.
But that’s where the talks stalled. The general outline was there with Pek, Beas for Monta. The details weren’t agreed upon.

Monta’s gonna stay a Warrior for life (or until he opts out) cause the way we view Monta seems much, much higher than anyone else.

Min did not offer that lottery pick
Lacob et. al required it, probably because they believed their player had the highest proven value by far. Pekovic at present has credentials as a starting center, but not back then. The new regime has depended heavily on Ellis as a marketing lure, and they probably looked at the recidivist pot head Beasley as Min’s white elephant.

As a pot head, he would have been able to connect with a lot of Bay Area residents

Here's a good metaphor for people.
Stephen Curry is the functional laptop with a few deficiencies but costs you less to run (just electricity), has a higher value among potential buyers, and is newer.
Monta Ellis is the shiny laptop that can’t perform the same functions as the Curry laptop but has it’s own perks. However it costs you both electricity and gasoline to run (and thus is more expensive), less people around you want it, and it’s an older model.
So you probably would prefer to keep the first laptop huh? Unless someone offers you one hell of a laptop back in return.
yeah
another analogy is that Curry is the better and cheaper player

I didnt see that in the article at all
not speculation
as you said, they were not allowed to trade last years first rounder since they dont have this year’s first rounder. they were shopping the pick, but the only way to legally trade it would have been either to trade the pick on draft day or pick up a first rounder somewhere else
