Please stop the Tank talk!

I love this site. I am huge Warriors fan. I really appreciate the insight of most of the regular commentators - even those I totally disagree with. I also think that this site is a testament to what many have noted in the past - the Bay Area knows hoops.

Given all this, I cannot understand why the basketball smart people on this site actually are begging for us to tank! More after the jump.

First off, players and coaches are hardwired to win. They do not think in terms of tanking to get potential draft picks who may or may not help us. They do not think in terms of what will make the team good in a couple years. Players, for obvious reasons, never operate this way - why would they want some younger guy drafted who might come in and take their spot? Coaches, especially rookie coaches, knows that they will be judged based on how many games the team wins - not tanks. Jackson is trying to build something long term here - the draft and trades and free agency and all that is not his domain. On the court I have been more pleased than disappointed in the job he is paid to do.

The only ones who can actually manufacture tanking is the front office. We have a new owner who I think is far too competitive to do this, and we have a GM who isn't shrewd enough to orchestrate a tank job from behind the scenes. Even if they were into tanking, it would happen via trading the best players for expiring contracts or young potential - and if that occurs, then we can say the front office has decided to tank. Until then, we need a moratorium on this nonsense.

Finally, as much as I hate the idea of being stuck in mediocrity for yet another season, I really think that if our young players develop and become something good down the road, that Curry begins to play like he did as a rookie (sigh), and that Jackson figures out how to help us win close games and we build on this foundation, we will have a better chance of making the playoffs in the next two years than if we somehow explode this team and draft a player who may (or may not) be the superstar we always wanted. WIth our luck - we will take and end up with the second coming of Joe Smith.
