A more realistic assessment of Lin
NBAplaybook broke down Lin's performances, and it's worth reading if you're convinced - like some people on GSOM are, that Lin's success proves our brain trust is stupid.

Good for JLin, can't fault the Warriors.
Lin was cut so we could make runs at Chandler and DeAndre Jordan. If we were able to land either of those guys the move would have been well worth it.
If we kept Lin the minutes would be hard to come by between Ellis and Curry. You’re looking at 28 mpg if he backed up BOTH guard spots.
Ideally, we’d like to have Klay back up the SG minutes and Lin would have 14 mpg give or take behind Curry. Lin would be a nice back up, but look…. we just picked up Nate Robinson who has done just as well as the main back up guard.
Sucks to lose Lin, but the risk (losing Lin) was worth the reward (Chandler/Jordan), IMO.
The only Dubs fans that should be mad are those that think Lin will be better than Curry or Ellis. If that’s the case more power to you.

You know what. if we didn't have Curry, Lin would have blown up here in the Bay. Too bad everyone was so in love with Curry they fail to see how JLIN is actually better!
More efficient, more penetration, more assists, amazingly good defender. This guy is the total package and its because ppl are so in love with Curry that we didn’t give Jlin a chance to shine here.
isn't home schooling great?

Who’s everyone? The fans? Because I recall the fans are the ones who went bonkers every time Lin tied his shoes.
Or do you mean the front office? The ones who drafted Curry in the lottery to be our starting PG. And, more importantly is proven to be the best player on the team.
Yeah, we should be MAD!

The funny part
Curry’s last 3 games-
56 points, 21-37 (56.8fg%), 31 assists, 14 rebounds, 11 turnovers
Averaging- 18.7 .590, 10.3, 4.7, 3.7
I wouldn’t mind that holding up (minus a slight cut in TOs)
Right, because 3 games is plenty enough evidence to conclude that Lin > Curry. Oh wait… it isn’t.

I guess he's better than Monta too!

The Golden State Warriors played about 4,000 minutes last season. Steph Curry played just under 2500 of those. Monta Ellis lead the league at 3227. By my quick estimation, that’s almost 2300 minutes available right there. It wasn’t an either/or with Curry and Lin. There were minutes available. Acie Law played over 600 minutes. Charlie Bell played almost 200, Lin almost 300. We could have easily seen Curry AND Lin last season.

ha
I remember I was given a hard time about this by a certain GSoM member when Lin was signed last season.

Like the point about how he attacks off screens...
… this is a fundamental (along with boxing out) that has been lacking this season and driving me mad. Klay seems to be the only one who really knows how to move and utilize screens effectively. Curry can be crafty, but isn’t as good as Klay at getting his man hung up to create space….Curry makes up for it a bit with his ability to create space for his shot off the dribble and his quick release. Also, our screeners tend to be poor. Especially Lee, who usually sets a half-hearted screen and then rolls too early the majority of the time.
Agree, though I’d add I think Monta uses off ball screens well.

Lin would come in real handy
the next time Curry goes out with the ankle – and you know it’s just a matter of time.
The decision the team had to make -
- was whether Lin or Jenkins was likely to be a better player 2-3 years from now.
Yeah, right now (especialy with Nate out) it’d be great to have Lin. But the team had some tough roster decisions to make. Even if we kept him instead of making the run for DJ, we would have had to drop him to try to add a big man when Kwame went down.
The issue is that it was a decision in the first place (due to the Jordan offer sheet).
Lin didn’t need to be cut to begin with. The team has had three PGs all season.

Well, my point is that even if we didn't cut him then -
- we probably would have cut him when Kwame went down.
Of course, since we’ve now cut Barron that roster spot is open. But I don’t see how he stays on the team past the Kwame injury regardless.
Why?
He takes Ish Smith’s spot and then Nate’s spot, in this imaginary land of my mind.
by Spider Jerusalem on Feb 9, 2012 5:18 PM PST up reply actions
He takes Ish's spot, agreed. But Ish isn't on the team any more.
And I’m not sure he takes Nate’s spot. I’m note sure he’s better than Nate, or will ever be better than Nate.
if he was in ish's spot
and then spot started when curry was hurt and played like he was playing now, maybe we don’t even sign nate, so who knows.

Me: So who (from the 2011 draft class) compares with (Anthony) Davis?
J-Ridah: Biyombo
Possible.
But there’s a reason why I posted this fanshot – because it points out how Lin’s success is partially a result of really terrible P&R defense.
And we don’t run the P&R that often or that well. This is a flaw with us, mind you, not him. And credit to Lin for being able to exploit the really terrible P&R defense.
But … basically, this fanshot gives you reasons to look at the specifics of his pay and realize that maybe he’s not quite all that and a bad of chips.
